You have the perfect logo and a brand visual identity that pops… so why are you struggling to grow your brand?

Well, it could be that you have neglected one or more of these four c's in your brand's strategy:

1. Consistency - Making sure the brand experience is consistent for your audience. If it isn't, you run the risk of confusing them, destroying the trust you've built up.

2. Consideration – You want to consider everything you do as a brand. Whether it’s a new initiative, piece of marketing, team member, business development decision or innovation.

• So ask yourself these three questions. What does this mean for the brand? • Does this make sense with your brand’s vision?
• Does this feel authentic for your brand?⠀

3, Clarity - Be as simple, authentic and focused as possible with everything you do. Nothing will turn off your audience faster than jargon, over-complicated messaging and confusion.⠀

4. Confidence - Belief in your brand, what you offer and your ability to serve your audience. Tap into the reason why you started your brand in the first place. Double down on what makes you unique and tell people what you’re passionate about.

Ask yourself… why would your audience care about your brand, if you don’t know what you’re fighting for?

Conflict is key to telling a captivating story, no matter what form that story takes. So, if you want to draw your audience in, here are 4 ways to use an enemy in your brand’s strategy.

1. Start with your brand’s purpose
Get to the root of why you started your brand. It’s the easiest way to build the foundation for a cause your brand’s audience can rally behind.

2. Position your brand against a competitor with contrasting values
This is how you send the message your brand is different from your competitors. So, if you think your brand’s competition is bad to the bone, shout it from the rooftops!

3. Pick a problem your audience is experiencing and run with it.
At the end of it all, the focus should be on the wants of your brand’s audience. These types of brand enemies have huge potential to build a loyal audience. Who will be grateful you rescued them when they needed your brand the most.

4. Shape your brand’s values around your audience
Double points if you also know the audience that you brand doesn’t want to attract. Like Apple, you’ll be using our innate need to want to belong and to play ‘us vs them’.

7 Steps to build an iconic brand

Here’s a deep dive into the seven-step process we use when we work on a business’s brand:
 
1. Know your audience
Understanding your audience and their struggles are crucial to building your brand. It will also give you the insight you need to motivate your audience to take action. 
 
Don’t know your brand’s target market? Look at the analytics of your social and google accounts. Engaging with your followers also gives insight into who they are and what they want from your brand.
 
2. Know your purpose
Defining your purpose drives everything you do as a brand. It solidifies who you are in the minds of your audience. In fact, it's actually your brand's superpower.

3. Be consistent
Don’t be New Coke. Inconsistency creates mental barriers that stop your audience from remembering your brand. What’s worse? It can even turn your loyal audience off your brand.
 
Consistency comes from a unified brand strategy across your marketing, design and culture.
 
4. Be different
Iconic brands swim in the opposite direction to their competition. Doubling down on what makes them distinct. Nike is the classic example of a brand that dared to be different from the start.

5. Solve your audience's problem
Use everything you've learnt about your audience in step one. Then create content, a product or service that solves your audience’s problem.
 
6. Be a storyteller
Iconic brands know how to turn their audience’s problems into engaging stories. So how can your brand turn that core emotional conflict into gold? Make your audience the hero of your brand's storytelling by taking them on a journey.

7. Have personality
Your audience won’t care about your brand if it doesn’t have personality. Whether your brand is nurturing or funny, show your personality any chance you get.

As humans, we’re hardwired to notice any break from the norm. It’s one of the big reasons why some brands have staying power over others. So, here are five iconic brands that carved out an identity that's distinct in their industry:

Netflix
Netflix was so disruptive they killed off their biggest competitor, Blockbusters. Netflix also created the blueprint for on-demand entertainment. Even today Netflix are still the driving force behind innovations in entertainment.

Nike
From the offset, Nike built their brand to be different from Adidas and to inspire movement. At the time, every sporting brand under the sun was copying their biggest competitor. The Result? A simple, timeless brand inspired by "Nike" the greek goddess of victory.
