Our conversation was a meditation on many things more than a telling of any one aspect of Rachel's story. After we spoke, I found myself intentionally slowing down and sitting with more uncomfortable emotions. It was not easy at first, then it was deeply cathartic. I hope you may feel moved to do the same.

| Roy Tuscany on Help, Healing, and High Fives | 10 Jul 2025 | 01:02:41 | |
Roy Tuscany is the Founder and CEO of the High Fives Foundation. On April 26, 2016 Roy overshot a ski jump and was paralyzed with a spinal cord injury. Six years later, and a year and a half after I was paralyzed, Roy and I connected for the first time. I had read an article about High Fives in Powder, a ski magazine and was jolted by the energetic vibe of the organization - it felt like something different. One of my closest friends also met Roy at an industry event. He immediately called me up and said you need to talk to this guy. In our first conversation, Roy told me about Tony Schmeising, a man who has been living as a quadriplegic for 40 years, and his expedition to Alaska to go Heli skiing. Roy then said, "you're next". I laughed nervously and said OK, while thinking to myself that it was a ridiculous suggestion. How was I going to do that with my recently acquired disability? Fast forward 12 years and High Fives has awarded me with grants for adaptive sports equipment, covered adaptive surf competition fees, and supported some of my earliest adaptive ski lessons with Vermont Adaptive. High Fives has also grown tremendously in that time and is now a leading organization in the catastrophic injury and disability community. At least half of our previous guests have received support from High Fives and and of course High Fives is the presenting sponsor of The Unexpected Journey. In this conversation, we skip over Roy's story of his ski accident that resulted in a spinal cord injury, paralysis, and the founding of High Fives. A quick Google search will produce dozens of podcasts and articles on both of those topics. Instead, Roy and I explore healing, leadership, parenting, taking ownership of one’s life, and trauma, including sexual abuse. If you or someone you know has experience sexual abuse or you suspect they are, please know that you are not alone and that safe confidential support from a professional is immediately available at the national sexual assault telephone hotline 1-800–565–HOPE or 4673. | David McCauley (cont'd) on Independence and Bluewater Racing | 23 Jul 2021 | 00:43:08
In the second of two episodes with David McCauley, David and I navigate the conversation toward sailing and his bluewater racing experience aboard The Impossible Dream, a beautiful and thoughtfully designed accessible catamaran. David shares more about his professional art career and using art as a powerful form of activism. As an extension of activism and advocacy, we also discuss the continual push to create independence for oneself, one of the greatest challenges for many folks living with disability, and in that same light, taking risks big and small to move just beyond one’s comfort zone. | David McCauley on Art Therapy and Block Parties | 08 Jul 2021 | 00:40:02
HRSummary: David McCauley is a professional artist, sailor, traveler, and founder of an art therapy organization. He's also quadriplegic and has been paralyzed for a similar timeline as me. We met two summers ago while sailing on the Impossible Dream, a fully accessible catamaran, and hit it off comparing notes on shared interests and a similar lived experience. When we reconnected the interview lasted for three hours so we split it up. In this first of a two part series, David shares a bit about his life before paralysis and the communal moments during his recovery that lead to the founding of RiseUP, his art therapy nonprofit organization. | Cristina Rubke on Adaptive Sailing and Accessible and Inclusive Resources | 10 Jun 2021 | 00:42:09
Cristina Rubke is one of the most involved people I know. She lives in Alameda California, across the bay from San Francisco, where she splits her time between traveling to regattas as a competitive adaptive sailor, working her day job as a trademark lawyer, and moonlighting as a disability rights advocate as well as a board member and former commodore of the Bay Area Adaptive Sailing Center. Christina was born with arthrogryposis, a rare condition that often leaves one with little to no mobility in their limbs. Along with promoting disability rights and universal accessibility, sailing is her true passion and she spends as much time on the water as she can - on the best days, sailing underneath the Golden Gate Bridge out into the Pacific Ocean. Appendix: Stanchion: a vertical metal post that sits on the perimeter of the boat and has a wire or line passing through it as a lifeline Centerboard: a board that goes down through the middle of the boat to help keep the boat upright and sailing in the right direction. Centerboards are used in dinghies Dinghy: a smaller lighter boat that usually has only one or two crew - people on the boat. Keelboat: a larger and heavier boat that, instead of having a retractable centerboard, has a heavy fixed keel built into the hull - the bottom of the boat. These boats are more stable and usually sailed, especially in racing, by more people Jib: the smaller sail in the front of the boat Mainsail: the larger sail on the back half of the boat that catches more wind and gives the boat most of its power Tacking: turning the boat facing into the wind so the wind switches from coming over one side of the boat to the other and the boat changes direction Rudder: the blade coming off the back of the boat that, when moved, changes the direction of the boat Servo: a small motor that is connected to a joystick and to the rudders allowing a person with limited physical mobility to steer the boat Healing: when the boat begins to tip or lean over to one side being pushed by the wind Skipper: the person steering the boat Whitecaps: when the wind is strong enough to create waves that have foam at the top of them. This makes for exciting sailing conditions Puff: a quick increase in the speed of the wind, a synonym of gust Heading up: turning into the wind which can slow the boat because the sails catch less wind Regatta: a big multi-day sail racing event Cruising: sailing for pleasure, for adventure, or to travel. Not racing. Analogous to hiking or backpacking instead of running a race Ebb tide: outgoing tide Flood tide: incoming tide Wing-on-wing: when the wind is coming directly over the back of the boat and the jib and the mainsail are on opposite sides of the boat, filled like a parachute, catching all of the wind
