Dr. Arup Roy-Burman

Dr. Roy-Burman is a pediatric intensivist (aka pediatric critical care specialist) and former Medical Director of the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit at UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital. Dr. Roy-Burman is now the CEO of Elemeno Health, which he cofounded in 2016.

Dr. Roy-Burman completed his undergraduate degree at UC Berkley in 1989; completed his medical degree at UCSF in 1994; completed his residency in pediatrics at Stanford in 1997; and then returned to UCSF for a fellowship in pediatrics critical care (aka PICU fellowship), which he completed in 2000.

After his fellowship, Dr. Roy-Burman took his first attending job at the Children's Hospital of Oakland eventually crossing the Bay to fill the role of Medical Director of the PICU at UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital in 2011, where he was also the Director of Transport, Access and Outreach. In this dual role of Medical Director of the PICU and Director of Transport, Access, and Outreach allowed Dr. Roy-Burman to interact with large swaths of the healthcare system from inpatient to outpatient and with all sub-specialities who consult in the PICU. With this experience of the inter-workings of the hospital system combined with his clinical understanding of patient care and provider pain points, he decided to co-found Elemeno Health, which received backing from famed accelerator and venture capital firm, Y Combinator. At a high-level, Elemeno Health is a SAAS (software as a service) company whose software aims to help push best-practices to front-line providers as well as capture feedback from these front-liners, thereby closing the "knowledge-practice gap."

Dr. Makary is a New York Times bestselling author and Johns Hopkins general surgeon and Professor of Health Policy. Dr. Makary serves as executive director of Improving Wisely, a national physician collaboration to reduce unnecessary medical care and lower health care costs.  He is also the founder of Restoring Medicine, an advocacy effort to help people who can’t afford their medical bills. His current research focuses on the appropriateness of medical care, administrative waste, price and quality transparency, and the impact of health care costs on low-income populations.

Dr. Makary was the lead author of the original articles on the Surgical Checklist and later served in leadership with Atul Gawande on the World Health Organization Surgery Checklist project. Makary has published more than 250 scientific articles, including articles on payment reform, vulnerable populations, and opioid prescribing guidelines. He is also an advocate for treating medical conditions when possible with healthy foods and lifestyle medicine.  Dr. Makary has been elected to the National Academy of Medicine and named one of America’s 20 most influential people in health care by Health Leaders magazine.

Lastly, his book Unaccountable was adapted for television into the hit medical series The Resident. His newest book, The Price We Pay, now available for order online and in stores on September 10, 2019, tells the stories of health care’s disruptive innovators and the new movement to restore medicine to its mission.

Dr. Miguel Escalón

Dr. Escalón (@dr_escalon) is the Program Director of the Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation Residency at Mount Sinai Ichan School of Medicine.

Dr. Escalón completed his undergraduate degree at The University of Chicago in 2005; completed his medical degree and a masters of public health at the University of Illinois at Chicago in 2009; completed his residency in Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation at Baylor College of Medicine in 2013; and finally a fellowship in Spinal Cord Injury Medicine at Mount Sinai in 2014.

In addition to Program Director, Dr. Escalón serves as the Director of Critical Care Rehabilitation. In this position, Dr. Escalón works closely with physical therapists, occupational therapists, speech therapists, and recreational therapists, as well as neuropsychologists, and other medical and surgical specialists in order to provide comprehensive care in the rehabilitation and mobilization of critically ill patients, especially those patients in the ICU.

Outside of the clinic, Dr. Escalón is involved with research into brain and spinal cord injury especially as it relates to pain, spasticity and the role of technology in recovery. In particular, he is involved in the use of robotic exoskeletons to facilitate walking after such injuries.

Dr. Raj Dasgupta

Dr. Dasgupta (www.beyondthepearls.net; rajdasgupta.com) is a sleep medicine attending at as well as an assistant program director of internal medicine at the University of Southern California Keck School of Medicine.

Dr. Dasgupta completed his undergraduate degree at the University of California, Irvine in 1997; completed his medical degree at the Medical University of Silesia in Poland in 2003; completed an Internal Medicine residency at Michigan State University in 2006; completed a fellowship in Pulmonary/Critical Care at St. Luke’s & Roosevelt Hospital of Columbia University in 2010; then completed a Sleep Medicine Fellowship at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit, Michigan in 2011.

In case you didn’t catch it, Dr. Dasgupta is quadruple board certified in Internal Medicine, Pulmonology, Critical Care, and Sleep Medicine, and so when not practicing sleep medicine, he practices pulmonary / critical care. One of his passions, however, is resoundingly for medical education, and he has received the faculty teaching award for the last 3 years in a row at Keck. In addition, Dr. Dasgupta has taught USMLE Step 1, 2, and 3 as well as Internal Medicine Board Review prep classes around the world for the past 14 years, and he just published the 1st book in a series he authored titled “Medicine Morning Report: Beyond the Pearls” printed by Elsevier.  Of note, Dr. Dasgupta has appeared on various media platforms and television shows such as the “The Doctors”, “The Wellness Hour”, “ESPN” ,“Larry King Now” and “You Can Do Better”. Dr. Ciro Ramos-Estebanez

Dr. Ramos-Estebanez (crecns.com) is a Professor in the Neurocritical Care & Stroke divisions at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine.

Dr. Ramos-Estebanez has completed extensive clinical training including an Internal Medicine residency at Albert Einstein, a Neurology residency at Harvard, a Neurocritical Care fellowship at the University of Miami, and finally a Ph.D. in neuroscience at the University of Cantabria in Spain. Dr. Michael Abrams

Dr. Abrams is a pediatric ophthalmologist currently on sabbatical to work as CEO of FreeLinc Technologies (www.freelinc.com) in Sherborn, Massachusetts.

Dr. Abrams completed his undergraduate degree at Haverford College; his medical degree at a combined program at Dartmouth and Brown Medical Schools; an ophthalmology residency at State University of New York at Buffalo; and then a fellowship in pediatric ophthalmology at Children’s Hospital of Detroit.

Over his career, Dr. Abrams has served as a General Medical Officer and Battalion Surgeon in the U.S. Army, spent 16 years in private practice as a pediatric ophthalmologist, and regularly published his research in peer review journals during this time.  He is a volunteer faculty member for ORBIS international, and has a specific interest in Connected Health and in establishing distributive educational hierarchies in evolving medical systems. He has served on numerous boards, including the Children’s Eye Foundation (www.childrenseyefoundation.org), and the Utah Medical Insurance Association (www.umia.com), where he helped to guide a $150 million merger and acquisition.  In 2013, Dr. Abrams took a sabbatical from clinical medicine to take the top job at FreeLinc, a research and development company focused on the adoption of Near Field Magnetic Induction (NFMI) as a new wireless communication standard to be used with their proprietary wireless body area network technology that hopes to revolutionize Connected Health.

Dr. Ranjith Ramasamy

Dr. Ramasamy (www.ranjithramasamy.com) is the Director of Male Reproductive Medicine and Surgery as well as an Assistant Professor of Urology at the University of Miami.

Dr. Ramasamy completed his undergraduate degree at Rutgers University in 2003; completed his medical degree at Rutgers University Robert Wood Johnson Medical School in 2007; completed a urology residency at New York Presbyterian Hospital – Weill Cornell Medical College in 2013; then completed a fellowship, sponsored by the NIH, in Male Reproductive Medicine and Microsurgery at Baylor College of Medicine in 2015.

Dr. Ramasamy has been integral to the advancement of the field of male reproductive medicine and surgery. He has published over a 100 peer-reviewed articles and authored several book chapters on the topic; is on the  editorial board of Urology and the Journal of Andrology, as well as a member of many other journals and societies; and has presented his work at over 25 national and international conferences from the United States to Indian, a remarkable feat considering that he only just completed his formal training two years ago.

Dr. Ramasamy is also the founder of a company called Uro-Logic that created an app called Urology Flashcards that has over 10,000 users and that is available for free in iTunes and on Google Play.

Of note, Dr. Ramasamy is a former television news anchor also having made appearances on the hit ABC series NY Med as well as ABC Nightly News to talk about foods with aphrodisiac qualities.

Dr. Michael Schacht

Dr. Schacht is the Associate Program Director of the Vascular and Interventional Radiology Residency & Fellowship at Indiana University.

Dr. Schacht completed his undergraduate degree at Northwestern University in 2005; completed a dual MD/MBA degree at Indiana University in 2010; completed a diagnostic radiology residency at the University of Louisville in 2015; and then completed a vascular and interventional radiology fellowship in 2016 at Indiana University, where he remains today as faculty.

Dr. Jeremy Bordeaux

Dr. Bordeaux is an Associate Professor of Dermatology and Fellowship Director of Mohs Micrographic and Dermatologic Surgery at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine and University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center.

Dr. Bordeaux completed his undergraduate degree at North Carolina State University – Raleigh in 1998; completed his medical degree and an MPH at Duke University School of Medicine in 2002; completed a dermatology residency followed by a Mohs Micrographic Surgery and Cutaneous Oncology fellowship at the University of Massachusetts by 2007 after which he joined the faculty in Cleveland.

Dr. Bordeaux is a leader in the field of Mohs surgery, especially in the arena of advanced reconstructive techniques to hide the otherwise disfiguring consequences of removing skin cancer from the face. A testament to the patients he has helped and the contributions he has made to the field, including a handful of publications that have changed the practice of dermatologic surgery, Dr. Bordeaux has been voted Best Doctor’s in America 3 out of the last 4 years. On top of these accomplishments, Dr. Bordeaux has still managed to have an average of 1 medical student shadow him per week for the last 10 years.

Dr. Keith Murray

Dr. Murray is a Clinical Assistant Professor of Emergency Medicine and Medical Director of Tactical EMS at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center

Dr. Murray complete this undergraduate degree at the University of Nevada in 1999; completed his medical degree at the University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine in 2007; completed an emergency medicine residency also at the University of Chicago in 2010; and then completed a wilderness medicine fellowship in 2011.

In addition to being medical director of tactical EMS, Dr. Murray speaks regularly about the field at grand rounds and in the communities surrounding Pittsburgh. Dr. David Zopf

Dr. Zopf is an Assistant Professor of Pediatric Otolaryngology, as well as an Affiliate Professor of Biomedical Engineering at the University of Michigan.

Dr. Zopf completed his undergraduate degree as well as a Masters of Science in Neuroscience and Physiology at Purdue University in 2005; complete his medical degree at Indiana University School of Medicine in 2009; completed an otolaryngology residency at Michigan in 2014 followed by a pediatric otolaryngology fellowship at the University of Washington in 2015, after which his returned to Michigan to join the faculty.

Dr. Zopf’s clinical focus is in caring for children with congenital malformations of the head and neck. He is also part of the Scaffold Tissue Engineering Group in the Department of Biomedical Engineering where he and his colleagues have led the field of medical 3D printing to aid in the treatment of these patients. Among other innovations, his team developed a patient specific, 3D printed airway splint, culminating in a landmark New England Journal of Medicine article detailing this innovation as well as the potential of 3D printing in general for the production of personalized medical devices.

Dr. Susan Padrino

Dr. Padrino is an Associate Professor of Internal Medicine & Psychiatry at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine and University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center.

Dr. Padrino completed her undergraduate degree at Amherst College in 1994; completed her medical degree at the University of Maryland School of Medicine in 1999; and then completed a Combined Internal Medicine and Psychiatry residency at Duke University Medical Center in 2004.

Dr. Tamar Shafran

Dr. Shafran is an attending general and pediatric ophthalmologist in Cleveland, OH.

Dr. Shafran received her medical degree from the Sackler School of Medicine in 2010; completed residency training in Ophthalmology at University Hospitals of Cleveland/Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine in 2014, followed by a fellowship in Pediatric Ophthalmology at Rainbow Babies & Children’s (also here at Case Western) in 2015.

Dr. Meera Harhay

Dr. Harhay is a transplant nephrologist and Assistant Professor of Medicine at Drexel University College of Medicine.

Dr. Harhay completed her undergraduate degree at Johns Hopkins University in 2003; completed her medical degree, an internal medicine residency, a nephrology fellowship, and a transplant nephrology fellowship all at the University of Pennsylvania by 2014, after which she joined the faculty at Drexel.

Dr. Leal Herlitz

Dr. Herlitz is an Anatomic and Clinical Pathologist and the Director of Medical Kidney Pathology at the Cleveland Clinic in Cleveland, Ohio.

Dr. Herlitz completed her undergraduate degree at Swarthmore College in 1999; completed her medical degree at Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons in 2004; then completed a residency in Anatomic and Clinical pathology followed by a fellowship in Renal Pathology both at Columbia University Medical Center by 2009, where she remained as faculty prior to joining the Cleveland Clinic in 2014.

Dr. Alex Macario

Dr. Macario is the Program Director of Anesthesiology at Stanford University School of Medicine, as well as a physician with an MBA.

Dr. Macario completed his undergraduate, medical school and business school degree at the University of Rochester all by 1990. He then completed an anesthesiology residency, as well as a postgraduate fellowship in health services research at Stanford by 1995.

In addition to many other professional involvements such as being the Program Director of the Combined Internal Medicine-Anesthesiology and Combined Pediatrics-Anesthesiology residency programs at Stanford, Dr. Macario has mentored many physicians on the merits of pursing business training along side their medical training and is the author of a paper titled “Should I Get a Masters of Business Administration?” published in Current Opinion in Anesthesiology.

Of note, Dr. Macario is the founder and director of the Management Fellowship at Stanford, a postgraduate program which trains physicians in areas such as leadership, informatics, entrepreneurship, quality, and management science with special attention to the delivery of surgical and anesthesia care.

Dr. Jeffrey Janis

Dr. Janis is full-time faculty as a Professor and Executive Vice Chairman in the Department of Plastic Surgery at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center.

Dr. Janis completed his undergraduate degree at Washington University Olin School of Business in 1993; completed his medical degree at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine in 1998; and then completed an integrated plastic surgery residency at The University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in 2003.

Dr. Janis is currently the President-Elect (will take the job in October of 2017) on the Executive Board of American Society of Plastic Surgery, also serving as the Board Vice President of Education, overseeing all education for the largest plastic surgery organization in the world.

He has been repeatedly named to the U.S. News and World Report “Top Doctors”, and also has received similar recognition by Best Doctors in America, America’s Top Plastic Surgeons, and Who’s Who in America.

Dr. Venita Chandra 

Dr. Chandra is a vascular surgeon as well as the Associate Program Director of the Vascular Surgery Fellowship at Stanford University School of Medicine.

Dr. Chandra completed her undergraduate degree at the University of Minnesota in 1999; completed her medical degree at the University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine in 2004; then completed a general surgery residency, a biodesign innovation fellowship, and finally a vascular surgery fellowship at Stanford by 2013.

In addition to her role as associate program director of the vascular surgery fellowship, Dr. Chandra is the founder of the Stanford Limb Salvage Initiative where research on new and cutting edge peripheral vascular and limb salvage techniques is performed, as well as work to optimize the management of patients and education of residents and fellows in this complex field.

Dr. Gordon Bennett

Dr. Bennett is an orthopedic foot and ankle surgeon at the Crystal Clinic Orthopedic Center, a private multi-group specialty practice in Akron, Ohio.

Dr. Bennett completed his undergraduate and medical degree at the University of Saskatchewan by 1982; completed a residency in orthopedic surgery at Akron General Medical Center in 1988; and then completed a fellowship in Foot and Ankle Reconstructive Surgery at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in 1989, eventually returning to Akron by 1999 to join the Crystal Clinic where he is now an executive vice president on the board of managers.

While predominantly a private practice physician, Dr. Bennett is also a clinical professor of orthopedic surgery at Northeast Ohio Medical University where he lectures medical students and residents on all facets of orthopedic foot and ankle management.

Dr. Josh Augustine

Dr. Augustine is a nephrologist at the Cleveland Clinic, as well as an Assistant Professor at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine.

Dr. Augustine completed his undergraduate and medical degree at the University of Michigan by 1997; completed an Internal Medicine residency at Northwestern University Hospital in 2000; completed a fellowship in Nephrology and Hypertension in 2003; and then completed a second fellowship in Kidney Transplantation in 2004.

Dr. James Voos

Dr. Voos is an Associate Professor in Orthopedic Surgery at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine, Director of the Sports Medicine Institute at University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center, and is the Head Team Physician of the Cleveland Browns of the National Football League.

Dr. Voos completed his medical degree at the University of Kansas in 2004; completed an Orthopedic Surgery Residency follow by a Sports Medicine Fellowship in 2010 at the US News & World Report #1 ranked “Hospital for Special Surgery in New York” where he was an assistant Team Physician for the New York Giants and WNBA New York Liberty. Before coming to Cleveland in 2014, Dr. Voos was the Team Physician for the Kansas City Chiefs and Head Physician for the Kansas City Ballet.

He has published over 50 scientific articles and book chapters on topics such as ACL reconstruction, shoulder instability and hip arthroscopy. Dr. Voos has a passion for advancing the safety and education of athletes with expertise in the use of wearable technology, development of injury prevention programs and sports performance.

Dr. Voos’ wife is a neonatologist at Rainbow Babies and Children’s Hospital. They have 3 young children, Kalli, K.C. and Klara.

Dr. Kevin Malone

Dr. Malone is the Chief of Hand and Upper Extremity Surgery at University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center, as well as an Associate Professor of Orthopedic Surgery at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine.

Dr. Malone completed his undergraduate degree at the University of Notre Dame in 1995; completed his medical degree at the University of Cincinnati in 2001; completed residency in orthopedic surgery at William Beaumont Hospital in 2006; and then completed a Hand and Microvascular Surgery Fellowship at the University of Washington Harborview Medical Center in 2007, after which he returned to Cleveland to start his practice.

Dr. Surve is the Co-Director of the Texas Center of Performing Arts Health, as well as an Associate Professor in the Department of Family Medicine at the University of North Texas Health Science Center.

Dr. Surve completed his undergraduate degree at The College of New Jersey in 2001; completed his medical degree at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey School of Osteopathic Medicine in 2005; completed a residency in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at Long Beach Medical Center in New York in 2009; and then completed a Plus One Neuromusculoskeletal Medicine and Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine fellowship at Rowan University in 2010, after which he joined the faculty.

Dr. Beverly Newhouse

Dr. Newhouse is a critical care medicine physician, as well as an Associate Clinical Professor of Anesthesiology at the University of California, San Diego.

Dr. Brett Porter

Dr. Porter is a geriatrician at Intermountain Senior Clinic in Salt Lake City, Utah.

Dr. Porter completed his undergraduate degree in 2007 and his medical degree in 2012 both at the University of Vermont, as well as a masters certificate in gerontology in the intervening years at the University of Utah. He then completed an internal medicine residency at Loyola University in 2015, followed by a fellowship in geriatric medicine once again at the University of Utah.

Dr. Porter is the recipient of the Southeast Center of Excellence In Geriatric Medicine Resident Award, given in recognition of excellence in and dedication to geriatric medicine. Dr. Porter’s clinical interests include dementia, end of life planning, and polypharmacy and limiting the use of prescribed medications in the elderly.

Dr. Hodes is an American internist in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. He is the Ethiopian medical director of the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee, a 103 year old organization that provides high-impact disaster relief and long-term development assistance worldwide.

Dr. Hodes completed his undergraduate degree at Middlebury College in 1975; completed his medical degree at University of Rochester School of Medicine in 1982; and then completed an internal medicine residency at Johns Hopkins University in 1985.

Before completing his residency, Dr. Hodes made his first trip to Ethiopia as a relief worker during the 1984 famine. He then won a Fulbright Fellowship after residency to teach at Addis Ababa University School of Medicine from 1985-1988. In 1990, he joined the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee to help care for the Ethiopian immigrants to Israel, work that eventually led him to become senior consultant at Mother Teresa’s Mission, caring for sick and destitute patients. In addition to his work in Ethiopia, he has worked with refugees in Rwanda, Zaire, Tanzania, and Albania, in one instance being charged with the health of some 50,000 refugees in the Kibumba camp in Zaire.

In 1999, Dr. Hodes met 2 abandoned orphans with Pott Disease (or, tuberculosis of the spine) and adopted them so that he could put them on this insurance so that he could bring them to the United States for surgery. This set in motion events that would see Dr. Hodes officially launch the Ethiopian spine program in 2006. During that first year, he got 20 new patients with spinal deformities. The clinic now averages over 1 new patient a day. Today, following nearly 3000 spine patients, Dr. Hodes partners with world-renowned, Ghanaian spine surgeon Dr. Oheneba Boachie-Adjei, with whom he has arranged over 600 surgeries. Observing this, noted Indian spine surgeon Dr. S. Rajasekaran commented “Rick has the largest collection of the worst spines in the world.”

Dr. Hodes has published over 20 peer-reviewed articles in the medical literature; has been awarded 5 honorary doctorates; and has been a commencement speaker at multiple schools, including the University of Rochester, UC Davis, and Brandeis. The American College of Physicians has awarded him “Mastership” (the level of membership above fellow), as well as the Rosenthal Award for creative practice of medicine. He was recognized as a CNN Hero in the category “Champion of Children.” He is the subject of 4 documentary films, including “Making the Crooked Straight” and “Zemene,” as well as a book, “This is a Soul: the Mission of Rick Hodes” by Marilyn Berger.

Dr. Hodes lives in Ethiopia with his family and patients.

Dr. Brandon Atkins

Dr. Atkins is a cardiologist as well as a Clinical Director of Cardiovascular Clinical Research at Merck Research Laboratories in Rahway, New Jersey.

Dr. Atkins completed his undergraduate degree at the University of Virginia in 1993; completed his M.D. and Ph.D. in Molecular Biology at the University of Pennsylvania by 2000; completed an internal medicine residency at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in 2003; and then completed a fellowship in Cardiology at Massachusetts General Hospital in 2006.

Upon completing his fellowship, Dr. Atkins was recruited to Cleveland where he was an Assistant Professor in the Department of Medicine at University Hospitals Case Medical Center. At University Hospitals, he treated patients on the in-patient Cardiovascular Service and served as an Associate Program Director of the Internal Medicine residency. In addition, Dr. Atkins was a faculty member in the Case Cardiovascular Research Institute within the Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine. During his basic science research career, he received and completed a mentored K Award from the National Institutes of Health as well as a career development award from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. He was able to establish his own independent biomedical research laboratory focused on the study of vascular biology and the basic molecular mechanisms of cardio- and cerebro-vascular disease. His work has resulted in multiple publications in the literature and presentations at scientific meetings.

In mid 2015, Dr. Atkins transitioned from academia to the pharmaceutical industry joining Merck Research Laboratories as a Clinical Director of Cardiovascular Clinical Research, work that has seen him involved with early and late stage development projects in atherosclerosis, heart failure, and thrombosis.

Dr. Young is the Interim Section Head of Musculoskeletal Radiology at University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center, as well as the Director of Medical Imaging for the Cleveland Browns of the National Football League.

Dr. Young completed his undergraduate degree at DePauw University in 1989; completed his medical degree at Indiana University School of Medicine in 1993; completed a residency in radiology at Oakwood Hospital is Dearborn, Michigan in 1997; and then completed a fellowship in musculoskeletal radiology at University Hospitals in 1998, where he remains today as faculty.

While his fellowship emphasized sports medicine MRI, Dr. Young’s musculoskeletal training also included exposure to orthopedic oncology. As such, in addition to reading images for the Browns, Dr. Young’s clinical interests include diagnosing bone and soft tissue malignancy. Moreover, Dr. Young is the coordinator of Emergency Radiology at University Hospitals and therefore spends considerable time aiding his colleagues in the ED.

Lastly, as an associate Professor of Radiology at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine, Dr. Young is actively involved in the education of medical students and residents.

Dr. Janani Krishnaswami

Dr. Krishnaswami is the Program Director of the Preventive Medicine Residency at the University of Texas - Rio Grande Valley School of Medicine.

Dr. Krishnaswami received her medical degree from the University of Michigan in 2008; completed residency training in Internal Medicine and Preventive Medicine at the University of California, San Francisco and Kaiser Permanente, as well as completed a Masters in Public Health in Epidemiology at the University of California –Berkeley all by 2012, eventually taking the job as Program Director in 2015.

Since completing her training, Dr. Krishnaswami’s research has center on the cultural context of wellness and measuring “best practices” of community engaged programs focusing on preventing sedentary behavior and obesity. In support of this effort, Dr. Krishnaswami’s has focused on building health “outside the hospital” by engaging students, community members and trainees in community-based, participatory efforts to promote wellness, prevent chronic disease, and sustain health. Prior to her role as Program Director at Rio Grande Valley, Dr. Krishnaswami served as the Associate Program Director for Preventive Medicine at the University of California – Los Angeles, where she led curriculum development on community engagement and quality improvement. In addition, she developed and taught a novel health policy curriculum for the Kaiser Permanente Los Angeles Internal Medicine residency program, and mentored Family Medicine and Internal Medicine residents through the program’s first community-engaged research elective. Based on her work in curriculum design and medical education, she was invited to serve on the national steering committee directing the creation of a novel inter-residency health policy fellowship, led by George Washington University and Kaiser Permanente.

Importantly, this work led Dr. Krishnaswami to establish the Preventive Medicine program at Rio Grande Valley as the first ACGME-accredited residency based on the “Community-Engaged Lifestyle Medicine” curriculum, which aims to build health equity and local health in the training of residents.

In her spare time, Dr. Krishnaswami tends to her own wellness through her hobbies of writing, singing and fitness, and spending time with her husband and young son.

Dr. Daniel Lee

Dr. Lee is the Program Director of Anesthesiology, as well as a Clinical Professor of Anesthesiology and Pediatrics at the University of California, San Diego.

Dr. Lee completed his undergraduate degree at the University of Illinois at Champaign/Urbana in 1988; completed his medical degree and a PhD in Genetics & Development at the University of Texas Southwest Medical Center in 1997; completed a pediatrics residency in 2000 followed by an anesthesiology residency in 2003 both at UC San Diego. He then completed a fellowship in pediatric anesthesia and intensive care at the Great Ormond Street Hospital for Sick Children in London in 2005, after which he returned to UC San Diego to join the faculty.

Dr. Lee has many passions but one of them is resoundingly for medical education. In addition to being the Program Director of Anesthesiology, he is the Program Director for the Combined Internal Medicine/Anesthesiology Residency, as well as the Vice Chair for Education in the Department of Anesthesiology. He is involved at the School of Medicine on the Core Curriculum Committee and is currently the Chair of the UCSD Program Oversight Committee, which is responsible for targeted reviews of all 124 residencies and fellowships at the University.

And the list of his educational involvements goes on.

Of note, Dr. Lee has a special interest in understanding and preventing physician burnout and is on the UCSD Healer Education Assessment and Referral Program Committee, which provides assessments and lectures addressing medical student & physician depression and suicide.

Dr. Serena Hu

Dr. Hu is Chair of the Division of Spine Surgery, Vice Chair of the Department of Orthopedic Surgery, and Professor of Orthopedic Surgery at Stanford University.

Dr. Hu completed her undergraduate degree at Cornell University in 1980; completed her medical degree at McGill University in 1984; completed an orthopedic residency at the Hospital for Special Surgery in 1989; and then completed a fellowship in spine and scoliosis surgery at Rancho Los Amigos Medical Center in 1990, after which she took her first job as assistant professor at the University of Minnesota. Eventually, Dr. Hu transitioned to the University of California, San Francisco, where she held the title of Chair of the Department of Orthopedic Surgery from 2011 to 2014, finally assuming the role of Chair of Spine Surgery at Stanford where she remains today.

Dr. Hu is and has been heavily involved with the professional organizations and publications of her field since the beginning of her career. Not just a member of a dozen or so associations and societies, Dr. Hu has served and held leadership roles on multiple dozens of committees and Boards of Directors, and is currently the secretary of the American Orthopedic Association among several other active tenures, not including her leadership and mentorship roles at Stanford and UC San Francisco before that. In additional to being a reviewer for several journals, Dr. Hu is also an associate editor of Spine Deformity, the official journal of the Scoliosis Research Society.

Dr. Hu has received a dozen research grants, published over a 100 peer-reviewed papers, and written 17 book chapters, not to mention the 100s of visiting professorships and invited lectureships she has attended locally, regionally, nationally, and internationally over her career.

Of note, Dr. Hu is also a graduate of the Executive Program at Stanford’s Graduate School of Business.

Dr. Kilchevsky is a Staff Urologist at Concord Hospital in Concord, NH.

Dr. Kilchevsky completed his undergraduate degree at Middlebury College in 2005; completed his medical degree at George Washington University School of Medicine in 2009; completed a urology residency at Yale-New Haven Hospital in 2014; and then completed a urological oncology fellowship at the National Institutes of Health in 2016, after which he joined the Concord Hospital Medical Group where he remains today.

Dr. Kilchevsky is currently the associate investigator of two clinical trials focusing on the treatment of prostate cancer, and has already published a dozen peer-review papers on similar subject matter in his young career. In addition to being a member of the American Urological Association, Dr. Kilchevsky is also a member of the Israeli Society of Sexual Medicine and has published several papers on erectile dysfunction following radical prostatectomy, as well as the clinical anatomy of the G-spot.

Clinically, Dr. Kilchevsky’s areas of interest include minimally invasive surgery, image-guided therapies, and functional prostate imaging.

Dr. Vasudha Bhavaraju

Dr. Bhavaraju is the Program Director of the Phoenix Children’s Hospital/Maricopa Medical Center Pediatrics Residency in Phoenix, Arizona.

Dr. Bhavaraju completed her undergraduate degree at Franklin and Marshall College in 1995; completed her medical degree at Pennsylvania State University College of Medicine in 1999; and completed a pediatrics residency as well as a chief resident year at Phoenix Children’s Hospital by 2002, where she remains today as faculty.

Dr. Bhavaraju is heavily involved in the personal, professional and educational development of residents. In addition to the stewardship of her own residency program in Phoenix, she is part of a national task force sponsored by the Association of Pediatric Program Directors to improve assessment tools for residents. For her efforts, Dr. Bhavaraju has received numerous faculty mentorship and teaching awards.

In addition to her educational duties, Dr. Bhavaraju works as a pediatric hospitalist and spearheaded the founding of the Weekend Newborn Clinic at Maricopa Medical Center in response to a system-wide need for follow-up of recently discharged newborns whose well-child visits fell on weekends and holidays.

Dr. Banagan is an orthopedic spine surgeon and Assistant Professor of Orthopedics at the University of Maryland School of Medicine.

Dr. Banagan completed her undergraduate degree at St. Lawrence University in 2001; completed her medical degree at SUNY Upstate Medical University in 2005; completed a residency in orthopedic surgery at the University of Maryland Medical Center in 2010; then completed a fellowship in orthopedic spine surgery at Rush University Medical Center in 2011, after which her returned to the University of Maryland to join the faculty.

Dr. Banagan specializes in adult and pediatric spine patients and treats cervical, thoracic and lumbar spine conditions. In addition to her clinical duties, Dr. Banagan has already authored or co-authored 20 book chapters in her young career. She is also involved in the Medical Student Mentor Program at the School of Medicine, as well as the Orthopedics Clerkship Program, which oversees orthopedic clinical rotations for 3rd and 4th year med students. Lastly, she is the education coordinator for the spine fellowship taking active part in the training of future spine surgeons.

Dr. Chad Zender

Dr. Zender is the director of the Head and Neck Microvascular Reconstructive Surgery Fellowship at University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Centerand an Associate Professor of Otolaryngology at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine.

Dr. Zender completed his undergraduate degree at Bowling Green State University in 1997; completed his medical degree at Wright State University Boonshoft School of Medicine in 2001; completed his residency in otolaryngology at Loyola University Medical Center in 2006; and then completed a fellowship in microvascular surgery at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in 2007.

Dr. Zender is an active member of the Case Comprehensive Cancer Center and is participating in several clinical trials involving non-surgical treatment of HPV-related head and neck cancer, as well as adjuvant therapy after surgery.

In addition, his translational research interests are in discovering therapeutic biomarkers for the identification of cancerous and precancerous lesions of the head and neck.

Of note, Dr. Zender has also participated in several surgical missions trips around the world including to east Africa where he worked with local otolaryngologists to provide care and education to patients and physicians through the Head and Neck Outreach Program.

Dr. Herrmann is a Pediatric and Adult Congenital Cardiac surgeon in the Division of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery at Indiana University School of Medicine.

Dr. Herrmann completed his undergraduate degree at Wabash College in 2002; completed his medical degree at Indiana University School of Medicine in 2006; completed his general surgery residency at Indiana University in 2013, during which time he also completed an NIH-sponsored postgraduate research fellowship. Then, following residency, he completed a cardiothoracic surgery fellowship at the University of Pennsylvania in 2015, as well as a congenital cardiac surgery fellowship at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia in 2016, after which he returned to Indiana University to join the faculty.

Dr. Herrmann specializes in pediatric and adult congenital cardiac surgery but has special interests in single ventricle physiology, pediatric mechanical circulatory support, and the Ross procedure.

Dr. Herrmann and his wife have two children. He enjoys playing sports with his children and spending time outdoors, particularly landscaping.

Dr. Shadia Jalal

Dr. Jalal is an Assistant Professor of Clinical Medicine at Indiana University School of Medicine.

Dr. Jalal completed her medical degree at the University of Jordan Faculty of Medicine in 2002 and her residency in internal medicine at the University of Indiana in 2006, where she also completed a fellowship in Hematology-Oncology in 2009 and where she remains today as faculty.

In addition to her clinical duties as the director of the thoracic oncology clinic at Indiana University, Dr. Jalal is the director of the Clinical Trials Office where she helps oversee clinical research at the University. Her own research interests include lung and esophageal cancer, and is or has been the principal investigator on near 20 clinical trials in her young career to date, being awarded the Young Investigator Award in 2013.

She also finds time to advise medical students, residents and fellows, for which she was recognized with the Outstanding Teaching Contributions to Medical Student Education award by the School of Medicine in 2014.

Dr. El Asmar is an endocrinologist at University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center and an Assistant Professor of Medicine at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine.

Dr. El Asmar completed her undergraduate degree in 2005; her medical degree in 2009; a research fellowship in breast cancer in 2010, as well as her intern year of internal medicine residency training in 2011, all at the American University of Beirut in Lebanon. She then completed her internal medicine residency in 2014, followed by an Endocrinology, Diabetes & Metabolism fellowship in 2016, both at University Hospitals where she remains to day as faculty.

Dr. El Asmar is currently full-time clinical faculty but is also actively involved in the teaching and mentoring of fellows in preparation for their future careers in Endocrinology.

Dr. Emily Silverman

Dr. Silverman is an academic hospitalist at the Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital.

Dr. Silverman completed her undergraduate degree at Brown University in 2009 where she majored in History of Art and Architecture, briefly flirting with a career in the art world before heading down the pre-med path. She then completed her medical degree at Johns Hopkins University in 2014, followed by her residency in internal medicine residency at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) in 2017.

In addition to practicing hospitalist medicine, Dr. Silverman is the host and creator of The Nocturists, a live medical storytelling event and podcast for physicians and other healthcare providers. You can think of it as medicine’s version of the Moth. She is also the author of a series of prose poems about her experiences as a medical resident, many of which are published in the The Examined Life Journal of the University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine. Her writing is animated by a deep-seated curiosity about science, human nature, and what it means to live and die well.

Dr. Eugene Ceppa

Dr. Ceppa is the Associate Program Director for both the General Surgery Residency program and the Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary Surgery Fellowship at Indiana University School of Medicine.

Dr. Ceppa completed his undergraduate degree in 1999 and his medical degree in 2003 both at Johns Hopkins; completed his general surgery residency in 2010 at Duke University, a 7 year span that included a 2-year research fellowship at the University of California, San Francisco; completed a minimally invasive surgery fellowship in 2011, also at Duke; and then completed a hepato-pancreato-biliary (aka HPB) surgery fellowship in 2012, at Indiana University, where he remains today as faculty.

Dr. Gray is a former United States Air Force Flight Surgeon who has since retired from the military and clinical practice to pursue his passion for helping med and pre-med students on their journey to and through medical school.

Dr. Gray completed his undergraduate degree at the University of Florida in 2002; his medical degree at New York Medical College in 2009; and his intern year at Lemuel Shattuck Hospital in 2010 after which he served 5 years in the Air Force, the first 2 as a flight surgeon and the last 3 as Chief of Aerospace Medicine.

Dr. Nicole Maronian

Dr. Maronian is the Program Director of Otolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery, as well as the Director of the Voice and Swallowing Center at University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center.

Dr. Maronian completed her undergraduate degree at Allegheny College in 1987; her medical degree at the University of Rochester in 1991, where she also completed an otolaryngology residency in 1998; and then completed a fellowship in Laryngology and Voice Disorders at the University of Washington in 1999, eventually joining the faculty at University Hospitals in 2006.

Dr. Maronian’s research interests include neurolaryngology, tracheal disease, and dysphagia. She has published nearly 40 papers in peer-reviewed journals about laryngology and voice disorders and is a reviewer for the journal Laryngoscope.

Also a frequent presenter and speaker on laryngeal disease at local, regional and national meetings, Dr. Maronian has been voted Top Doctors in Cleveland by Cleveland Magazine, as well as voted Best Doctors in America by Best Doctors, Inc.

Dr. Zacharias, DO, is an Assistant Professor of Medicine at University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center in the Division of Cardiology and Section of Heart Failure and Heart Transplantation. He is also currently the Medical Director of the Mechanical Circulatory Support program.

Dr. Zacharias completed his undergraduate degree at John Carroll University in 2003; completed his medical degree at the Ohio University Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine in 2007; completed an Internal Medicine residency, followed by a Cardiology fellowship both at the University of Massachusetts Memorial Medical Center by 2014 where he also served as a Chief Resident and as a Chief Cardiology Fellow. He then completed a fellowship in Advanced Heart Failure and Cardiac Transplantation at the University of Wisconsin Hospital and Clinics in 2015 before returning to Ohio to join the faculty at Cleveland Medical Center where he remains today.

Dr. Zacharias’ clinical interests include invasive hemodynamics, temporary and durable mechanical circulatory support, and cardiac transplantation. He sees himself as a clinician educator and mentors local students interested in pursuing a career in medicine. At the completion of medical school he was a finalist for the Dean’s Award and at the completion of his Chief Resident year he was the recipient of the University of Massachusetts Department of Medicine Recognition Award for extraordinary contributions to medical education.
