#170 Daniel Costa Gil - Against all odds: A tale of loss, love, and Resilience

lundi 15 janvier 2024Duration 01:51:46

In this profoundly moving episode of The Unconventionalists podcast, Mark Leruste sits down with Daniel Costa Gil, a man whose life story embodies the very essence of human resilience and hope. Born as the youngest of four brothers in South Africa, our guest this week is the sole survivor of a family that faced an unimaginable cascade of tragedies. From the heart-wrenching loss of his parents and siblings to facing life's harshest challenges alone, his journey is a testament to the indomitable human spirit. In an intimate conversation, Daniel shares for the first time the harrowing details of his childhood - marked by the sudden loss of his father, a renowned psychologist, to suicide and the devastating struggles of his mother, a dedicated doctor who through a series of tragic events, found herself in a situation that led her to her darkest hour. The episode takes a deep dive into the fateful day that changed everything, when a crisis led to an unimaginable family tragedy that would forever change the course of Daniel's life. Yet, amidst this backdrop of sorrow and loss, Daniel's story is not one of despair. It's a narrative of incredible strength, love, and an unyielding belief in the possibility of a brighter tomorrow. He opens up about the challenges of overcoming the complex emotions surrounding his mother's actions on November 13th, 1998, and the heartbreak of losing his last remaining brother during the global pandemic. His message is clear and powerful: Life happens for us, not to us. In this episode, Daniel eloquently shares how he transformed his pain into his purpose, helping others navigate their journeys of grief, guilt and shame into transforming into their authentic self and expression. When shit hits the fan and your world turns upside down, Daniel is the man you call. Join us for a life-changing episode that's more than just a story - it's an exploration of the depths of grief and the heights of human resilience. It's a reminder that even in our darkest moments, there is a light of hope that never goes out. Daniel Costa Gil (www.danielcostgil.com) is a graduate of my Own Your Story programme. #162 How to become indistractable and finally reach your goals with Nir Eyal

jeudi 31 mars 2022Duration 54:27

In this week's episode of The Unconventionalists podcast, I sit down with Nir Eyal, Wall Street Journal Bestselling Author of "Hooked" and "Indistractable”, investor, consultant and public speaker to find out the number one reason why people don’t achieve their goals and what we can do to become hyper focused and indistractable.

It’s a powerful conversation that I hope will be as much of a game changer to you as it was to me.

Nir’s book “Indistractable”is one of my favourite books I read in 2021 and I just knew I had to get him on the podcast to better understand what truly drives us to do what we do.

As you will hear in our conversation, it turns out that 90% of the problem with distraction has nothing to do with technology or external factors, it has everything to do with our internal triggers.

Plato, the Greek philosopher was complaining about distraction 2,500 years ago! That’s why Nir believes that conventional advice towards becoming less distracted is silly. Instead of focusing on trying to get rid of our smart phones we must first learn how to manage our internal triggers that drive our behaviour.

That’s right, most distractions begin from within. Nir argues that it’s our desire to escape discomfort, or as he calls them internal triggers, be it boredom, loneliness, fatigue, uncertainty, stress or anxiety, this is why we’re looking for escape.

Whether it’s too much news, too much booze or too much Facebook we’re going to look for distraction if we don’t know how to deal with those integral triggers.

“The only way to handle distraction is to learn how to handle pain.” Nir Eyal

My favourite takeaway was that time management is actually pain management and that self-compassion may be the most underrated hack to productivity. Who knew that trying to stop the urge to do something was the very reason why we end up doing the very thing we don’t want to do (I know, very meta!).

This is a juicy conversation you won’t want to miss as we also dive deeper into Nir’s process to write binge-worthy books that people can’t stop talking about.

As always I can’t wait to hear what you got out of today’s conversation, so please get in touch and let me know!

Be true, be brave, be kind and let it rip.

Mark

Unless you've lived in a cave for the past few years, you're probably familiar with Britain's most popular TV baking show, the Great British Bake Off, aka GBBO. Where amateur bakers come together to compete for the sweetest title of all. But if you thought that a Great British Bake Off competitor only cares about cakes and bread, you’d be wrong. In this episode I talk to Tom Gilliford from the 2016 season of GBBO who went to win two Star Baker awards on consecutive weeks. In this episode Tom and I talk about the highs and lows of Tom’s career so far and his most recent venture with Cactus Kitchens. #73 How to be happy at work with Samantha Clarke

jeudi 1 juin 2017Duration 34:54

According to Forbes magazine, work is more often a source of frustration than one of fulfillment for nearly 90% of the world’s workers. That sounds pretty awful if you ask me. So does that mean we're all doomed to be miserable at work? Thankfully, far from it. Enter Samantha Clarke, a happiness consultant who's worked with an impressive list of clients including American Express, The Guardian, Innocent, Harrods, PizzaHut and MediaCom. In today's episode she shares her top tips on how to create a happiness culture at work on a budget, why bean bags and pizza Fridays are great but they're just the tip of the iceberg, and what does being happy really mean. If you enjoy today's episode, please share it with a friend as it's the best form of compliment you can give me! #72 How to overcome adversity with Seb Broster

mercredi 31 mai 2017Duration 49:41

In 2013 Seb Broster was diagnosed with a rare form of blood cancer. As a result of a combination of chemotherapy and steroids, he suddenly ballooned to 135kgs and lost all his hair.  That's when we first met in London. The thing that struck me most about Seb back then was how positive he was and just how funny he was. "A black sense of humour is what got me through this whole journey. You've got to laugh no matter what." Our penchant for growing moustaches for the Movember Foundation brought us together and fast forward to today, not only does Ben have a serious main on his head and is drug free, but he's also dropped down to 87kgs. Loosing 48kgs in the process since March 2014. The equivalent of a small child in weight! So when Seb walked into our studio this morning, I could barely recognise him.  He had, after all, lost 1/3 of his body weight over the course of three years and was in the best shape of his life. In today's interview Seb shares his journey, what helped him stay positive throughout the whole process and what he believes is the formula for getting in shape. Spoiler alert, it's pretty simple: stay positive, be consistent and make sure to have a life. If you enjoyed todays episode, please share it with a friend as that is the biggest compliment you could give me. Thanks and see you next week! #70 Why startups fail with Denis Duvauchelle

mardi 23 mai 2017Duration 01:08:09

Over the last decade, Denis Duvauchelle has launched more businesses than anyone I know. Including Twoodo, the productivity app for teams that was successfully accepted in one of Europe's most sought after startup accelerators and raised two rounds of funding. But then along came Slack. And Denis had to face one of the toughest experiences any entrepreneur and CEO must one day face: failure. In today's episode Denis opens up about the ups and downs of his decade long entrepreneurial journey and shares why he believes 99% of startups fail and what you can do to be part of the 1% of who succeed. It's not what you think... If you enjoy today's episode, share it with a friend who could benefit from hearing my conversation with Denis. #69 What it really takes to become a TEDx Speaker

mercredi 10 mai 2017Duration 46:55

What's one of your crazy dreams? Mine was to give a TEDx talk. And three weeks ago, that dream came true. But it wasn't an easy ride. I can still remember saying my big crazy dream out loud for the first time. It was seven years ago, back in 2010, when half way through a coaching session with my life coach at the time, Roya Ferdows, I started visualising and imagining myself speaking on stage, in front of a roaring crowd. I had my eyes closed and started describing how it felt. But more importantly, what the impact of my words had on the people there. It moved me. And it still moves me now remembering it. This special episode is the true story of how it took me seven years to realise my dream, and how it really was a team effort. I am so grateful to everyone who's helped me make my dream come to. I honestly could not have done it without you. Here's to chasing dreams, no matter how long they take. If you found today's episode inspiring, please share it with a friend!
