How To Breakthrough from the Emptiness of Success and Life with Purpose with Dr Sharon Spano06 May 202500:33:21

What happens when you achieve everything society calls "success" but still feel empty inside? Dr. Sharon Spano walks us through this profound paradox that affects countless high-achieving leaders.

Drawing from her extensive experience as a consultant with a PhD in human organizational systems, Dr. Spano reveals the hidden patterns that create what she calls "the emptiness of success." We explore how accomplished professionals with million-dollar homes and impressive careers often reach out for help when they realize material success hasn't delivered the fulfillment they expected.

Dr. Spano shares powerful insights about the "hidden loyalties" we carry from our family histories that unconsciously shape our relationship with success. Through moving client stories, she demonstrates how seemingly innocent parental advice like "you have to work very hard in America or you'll be left behind" can create lifelong patterns of never feeling enough despite extraordinary achievements.

The conversation takes a deeply personal turn when Dr. Spano opens up about raising and eventually losing her disabled son, and how this profound experience shaped her capacity for empathy and understanding in her work with leaders. This heartfelt discussion illuminates how our greatest challenges often become the foundation for our most meaningful contributions.

For leaders feeling trapped in the hustle culture, Dr. Spano offers practical wisdom for moving toward harmony: recognize work will never be completely done, identify your top priorities each day, and practice being fully present wherever you are. Her approach integrates professional growth with character development, creating what she calls "the other side of potential."

Take the first step toward breaking free from empty success by visiting SharonSpano.com/uncommon-leader to access her Leader's Edge assessment and discover where you stand in the stages of human development.

Career Pivots and Pursuing Purpose with Jeff Henderson, Author of What To Do Next11 Jul 202300:34:01

In today's news, we're seeing a wave of job cuts spanning various industries, affecting nearly 200,000 U.S. employees so far in 2023 according to Forbes' layoff tracker. Chances are, you know someone who has been impacted by this trend. In such challenging times, one of the best gifts you can give them is encouragement.

Back in November 2022, I had the opportunity to read the book "What To Do Next" by Jeff Henderson. and I was fortunate enough to interview Jeff about his book and gain some of his insights on how to navigate challenging times. Given the relevance of his message to today's economic climate, I've decided to re-share that episode with you. He also highlights the significance of side hustles and experimental ventures.

As we steer towards the end of our discussion, we shed light on the journey towards identifying one's purpose. How can experiences and side hustles assist in determining the next step? Jeff takes us through his personal experiences of leaving Gwinnett Church, a place he helped found, and the process of honoring the new leadership. We conclude discussing the power of humility in leadership and the necessity of continuous learning and growth in the face of change. 5 Ways Consistency Changed His Life at 55 29 Apr 202500:37:05

What's the single most powerful force behind sustainable transformation in leadership and life? According to leadership expert Dave Campbell, it's consistency.

In this deeply personal conversation, Dave reveals how he achieved the best physical shape of his life at age 55 through unwavering daily disciplines that transformed not just his body, but his leadership impact. His journey illuminates the critical connection between personal wellbeing and leadership effectiveness—"You have to take care of yourself, because your presence, your ability to show up, is absolutely critical."

Dave unpacks his "mind, body, soul" framework for holistic growth, explaining how carefully curating your daily inputs fundamentally shapes your leadership outputs. He challenges listeners with the confronting truth that "you get what you are, not what you want," prompting deeper reflection on the alignment between aspirations and current reality.

The conversation explores how identity shifts create lasting behavioral change, why environment is stronger than willpower, and the game-changing principle of "consistency before intensity" for anyone struggling to begin their transformation journey. Rather than aiming for dramatic overnight change, Dave advocates starting with small daily wins that compound over time.

Whether you're looking to elevate your leadership influence or transform any aspect of your life, this episode offers practical wisdom for sustainable growth. Start your journey today by choosing one small daily habit that aligns with your vision, committing to consistency, and watching as small wins compound into remarkable transformation.

Welcome back, Uncommon Leaders!

If you missed out on Part 1, don't worry—I've got you covered. Be sure to check out the previous episode by following this link

In this concluding segment of our 2-part interview, I had the privilege of asking Jay the customary first-time guest questions, and let me tell you, his responses did not disappoint. Prepare to be inspired as Jay opens up about a personal blind spot he once struggled with, which was a lack of self-awareness coupled with an arrogant attitude. He candidly shares how he used to believe he possessed all-encompassing knowledge and the ultimate opinion, even when he lacked the necessary understanding and experience on certain subjects. However, through uncomfortable discussions with his wife and others, he had a powerful realization—his perspective was limited, and he needed to cultivate humility.

This revelation holds tremendous value for leaders like you and me. Join us as Jay delves deeper into his transformative journey, offering profound insights and lessons that can help us address our own blind spots and foster personal and professional growth.

Get ready for an enlightening conversation that will challenge your perspectives and leave you with practical wisdom to apply in your own life.

Your Business Success Isn't Just About Financial Metrics—It's About Eternal Impact26 Apr 202500:11:23

Christian business leaders need to measure beyond traditional key performance indicators by adopting Kingdom Performance Indicators (KPIs) that track eternal impact. These new metrics reveal why we're doing business and who we're truly impacting beyond immediate stakeholders.

• Traditional KPIs measure financial and operational performance but fall short of measuring kingdom impact
• The shopping cart story illustrates how small acts of stewardship reflect our approach to business and leadership
• Kingdom Performance Indicators might include charitable impact, volunteer hours, or testimonials from affected lives
• Define your "why" with eternal significance—understand your purpose beyond providing products or generating profit
• Implement the 3H framework: Heart (demonstrating love), Home (cultivating culture), Hands (using resources to serve)
• Intentionally measure kingdom impact with SMART goals and regular assessment
• True success transcends the bottom line and creates a legacy of positive impact

Go and grow champions.

How to Move Beyond Philanthropy and Into The Spiritual Side of Success in Business22 Apr 202500:33:45

Rich Sanders brings a remarkably unique perspective to the Uncommon Leader Podcast as both a pastor and successful entrepreneur. With his powerful motto—"The more we make, the more we give"—Sanders tackles the perceived tension between Christian values and business success, offering a refreshing framework that celebrates both hard work and generous giving as expressions of faith.

Throughout our conversation, Sanders draws from his experience as a military veteran, business owner, and spiritual leader to illuminate how capitalism and Christianity can not only coexist but thrive together when properly aligned. He introduces the concept of "philanthropic capitalism" but takes it deeper, arguing that without genuine love for others, corporate giving risks becoming just another marketing strategy.

One of the most memorable moments comes when Sanders shares a profound encounter with a homeless man who, despite having nothing by conventional standards, demonstrated extraordinary spiritual wealth through his complete trust in God's provision. This story challenges listeners to reconsider what true abundance really means in both business and life.

For Christian business leaders navigating workplace dynamics, Sanders offers practical wisdom on leading by example rather than overt evangelism. "People will know you by your love," he explains, suggesting that authentic faith naturally shines through our actions, decisions, and treatment of others without requiring explicit religious language.

Sanders also introduces his nonprofit initiative, Koinonia Mission, created to help Christians serve their communities outside traditional church frameworks. This project reflects his commitment to making faith-based service accessible to everyone, regardless of their relationship with organized religion.

Whether you're a business professional seeking to integrate your faith more authentically in your work or simply curious about the intersection of spiritual and financial success, this conversation offers thoughtful insights on building a purposeful career that honors both profit and people. How might your business decisions change if you approached them through the lens of "the more we make, the more we give"?

Episode 50 - Steve Scanlon - Coaching should be moving people from dark to light31 Jan 202300:31:36

Hey Uncommon leaders, welcome back!

For episode 50 of the Uncommon Leader Podcast I have  Steve Scanlon,  the CEO and Co-founder of Re-wire, Inc where he helps train executives to become better leaders, increase performance and improve profitability through a science-based approach to Executive Coaching & Leadership Development.  I met Steve a little over a decade ago when he was an Executive Coach for Building Champions, an organization that I was coached by for about 10 years.

Steve is a self-proclaimed Neuroscience geek and is the author of two books: Reality & Hope: Reflections from a Coach’s Chair, and Still the Lizard, Transformation is Closer Than You Think.

I learned a lot from this interview.   My hand got tired from taking notes on that interview.  Steve’s energy is contagious.  His knowledge and wisdom are continuously growing and his encouragement not to “believe everything you think” is thought provoking.  This may be one of those podcasts you listen to more than once to glean all of the nuggets.

Episode 49 - BJ Thompson - 4 Simple Steps to Awaken a Better You24 Jan 202300:30:14

Hey Uncommon leaders, welcome back!

Is there a change you have been wanting to make this year as a part of your goals?  Are you feeling stuck?

Well, my guest today shares his story to help you out.  BJ Thompson is a speaker, author, and executive director for the relationship nonprofit Build a Better Us.  Over the past twenty years, he has helped tens of thousands of people all over the world experience growth and in his newly release book, Awaken a Better You, he shows us how it is possible to unlock mental, emotional, relational and spiritual wholeness with 4 Simple steps. BJ outlines a little bit of his personal story on today’s podcast and challenges us to apply his lessons to OUR story.

I really enjoyed the interview.    BJ said it best when he said that his transformation began when “I stopped allowing my circumstances to dictate my life.  You have everything you need.  You simply need to understand the process to awakening you.”

BJ’s four steps Desperation – Information – Application – Transformation – they are ‘simple’ steps, but make no mistake, they are not easy.  Nothing worth having is easy, though.

Episode 48 - Jesse Eubanks How We Relate - Understanding God, Yourself and Others through The Enneagram17 Jan 202300:27:45

Hey Uncommon leaders, welcome back!

Life is all about relationships – I believe that and today’s guest takes that to another level.

On episode 48 of the Uncommon Leader Podcast, I interview author Jesse Eubanks.  He has a new book coming out soon titled “How We Relate – Understanding God, Yourself, and Others through the Enneagram”.  As leaders, many of us have completed personality profiles before like the DiSC or MBTI or some other assessment.  You may have also discovered more about yourself and others through the Enneagram.  I had not done  so from a learning standpoint, which made this book was educational for me.  But it was so much more than just educational.  It was inspirational and encouraging.  Jesse talks about while many personality profiles are focused on the fruit in our lives, the Enneagram is more concerned about the ROOTS.

Using the tool of the Enneagram, this book explores the way each of us are uniquely wired as people, how Jesus earns our trust and his invitation into a new way of doing relationships.

I found myself smiling so much in this interview.  Jesse is a really good communicator and if you enjoyed the interview, you would definitely enjoy the book.  I know that I did

Would you be interested in reading How We Relate?  Let me tell you how you can get a free copy.

One of the things that helps this podcast is reviews from you, the listener.  Now, that review can help you as well.  So, do this, take the time to write a review on Apple Podcasts.  Then, take a screen shot of that review and email it to me at john@growingchampions.net with your mailing address and I will send a copy of the book to you.  Seems easy enough.

You can also learn more about Jesse Eubanks and his book at howwerelatebook.com

Episode 46 - Alice Penn, MD - Never Too Old... Never Too Late03 Jan 202300:31:28

Hey Uncommon leaders, welcome back!.  This is the Uncommon Leader Podcast

On Episode 46, I have a great guest lined up for you.  Doctor Alice Penn is an expert international coach and speaker that has journeyed from Medical Doctor to Finance executive to business owner.  In this episode, Alice details how she overcame personal battles with mental & physical illness as well divorce, and how she picked the pieces up and started again, because as she says “You’re never too old and it’s never too late”.  Alice is an expert in the art and science of change and knows what it takes to ‘level-up’ both personally and professionally.  Having worked with executives from many of the large consulting companies, her reputation as a highly intuitive and top-tier professional carried through from the bedsides of her patients all the way to the board level of her clients.

It was a GREAT conversation.  Alice’s transparency about her personal battles that she has overcome were both inspirational and encouraging.  She is acutely aware that we are all capable of so much more than we realize.  I encourage you to go out and follow Dr. Alice Penn on social media where she is very active.  I have placed links to her platforms in the show notes.

Season 2 - Episode 22 - Chris Welton - Go Toward Adversity13 Dec 202200:28:03

Hey Uncommon leaders, welcome back!

What an inspirational and encouraging guest for today's episode!  Chris Welton is a Certified Mortgage Planner in Lake Mary, FL, but he is SO much more that.  Chris is a leader who has learned to run toward and overcome adversity… overcome a tough childhood, overcome a limb difference, overcome loss of family, including a newborn son.   Chris has learned that the challenge doesn’t define WHO you are and that he has gained strength from the adversities he faced.

Be sure to have your pen and notebooks ready as Chris drops all kinds of powerful words of wisdom, hope and faith for us to learn from

Chris is one Uncommon leader and person.  His ability to go toward adversity and “become a better person on the other side of that adversity” is one that many of us can learn from today.  Give Chris a follow on Instagram (@onehandatatime) You will not be disappointed.

Season 2 - Episode 21 Gianna Rahmani - Let Your Faith & Love Be Greater Than Your Fear29 Nov 202200:27:20

Hey Uncommon leaders, welcome back!.  This is the Uncommon Leader Podcast and I am your host, John Gallagher – I have got a special, special guest for you to hear from today.

Gianna Rahmani is an author, entrepreneur, speaker, business leader and devoted wife and mom.  In today’s episode Gianna discusses, amongst other things, her recently released book, Dayhustle.  Listen in as she defines a couple new terms I hadn’t hear before… including 1) Dayhustle and 2) Angel Employment,  and why it means so much to her to get this word out for people who are not currently working in their area of passion and giftedness.

While the main topic of our conversation is G’s  book, we also talk about some other  leadership topics, including her leadership development journey, some of the books and people that have influenced her career, AND her favorite F-words!  Don’t worry it’s clean.

Here were a few of my takeaways from our conversation

·        Aligning passion and giftedness is very important and when you also identify a market for it when you can get paid, then you are working in the zone!

·        When you are doing something you are passionate about, you don’t need the alarm clock to wake you up in the morning!!

·        Let your faith and love be greater than your fear.  Mic drop moment there!  Uncommon for sure.

Interested in getting a copy of Gianna Rahmani’s book and staying in touch with her?  Go to dayhustle.com for information for how to get your autographed copy as well as connect with G on social media.

Season 2 - Episode 19 Jeff Henderson - What To Do Next01 Nov 202200:33:54

Hey Uncommon leaders, welcome back! I have a special, special guest for you today.

Jeff Henderson is an entrepreneur, speaker, pastor, business leader and author.  His bestselling book Know What you’re FOR, launched a movement in nonprofits around the world and  Jeff was recently named by Forbes Magazine as one of twenty speakers you shouldn’t miss and you definitely should NOT miss this conversation I had with him!!

The main topic of our conversation is Jeff’s most recent book he released titled:  What To Do Next:  Taking your Best Step When Life Is Uncertain.  In this story, Jeff brings you right into his story alongside various career moves he has made.

You'll need a pen and paper to take notes during this conversation.  Some of my favorite takeaways from Jeff:

·        How you leave your current season is how you begin your next season

·        Keep moving forward

·        Never say you’re never going to do something

·        Don’t fall in love with the idea, fall in love with the problem.

I would love to give away a copy of What To Do Next to one lucky listener.  Drop me an email at john@growingchampions.net and tell me what YOUR favorite story was from the podcast.  I will draw one lucky winner from the entries and send you a copy of the book.

Three Ways to Build Your Leadership Trust Account19 Apr 202500:06:45

Trust forms the foundation of leadership, functioning like a bank account where we make deposits through positive actions and withdrawals through negative behaviors.

• Trust requires doing what you say, saying what you do, and being authentically human in all interactions
• It often takes "99 attaboys to make up for one aw crap moment" in leadership
• When trust is broken, asking for forgiveness isn't enough—behavior change is essential
• Apologizing without changing behavior is like "patching a bucket while still running water into it"
• The Platinum Rule suggests treating others how they want to be treated, not just how you want to be treated
• Building trust requires consistent deposits that accumulate interest over time

Share this episode with someone who needs to hear it and leave a five-star review to help more uncommon leaders discover this message. Until next time, go and grow champions.

Key episode takeaways

  • While Lien may be seen as a process person, she also HAS to  be a people person in the roles she has had as an influencer

Season 2 - Episode 17 Stephanie Brockman - Actions Speak Louder Than Words04 Oct 202200:29:37

Hey Uncommon leaders, welcome back!.  This is the Uncommon Leader Podcast and I am your host, John Gallagher.  I am currently growing this podcast and building a community of people who are interested in making intentional moves toward positive work and life change in the areas of Faith, Family, Fitness, Friends, Fun, Finances,  Doing this podcast has opened doors to connect people I otherwise wouldn’t have been able to, and they are voices I believe will be helpful and inspiring for so many people!

I have got another fantastic guest for you this week.  Her name is Stephanie Brockman, Chief Operating Officer for Hertz Kompressoren USA Inc, and she calls Charlotte, NC, her home.

Stephanie’s ascension to her current leadership role has been rapid, but not without challenges.  Listen in to hear how she has used her persistent, never quit attitude to propel her at work and life.  Also, Stephanie’s Hertz Kompressoren customers should listen all the way through to the end to hear a special offer she has for podcast listeners.

Stepahnie was a great guest who made me laugh as well as challenged my thinking .  A few takeaways for me included:

  • Stephanie’s persistence and desire for continuous improvement go all the way back to her childhood and her trying to learn song lyrics.
  •  She knows to be successful she has to grow herself AND others
  • And one of my favorite quotes that she spoke and that I might borrow from her: “Words have meaning, and actions speak louder than words.”

You can stay in contact with Stephanie on LinkedIn or Facebook.

Season 2 - Episode 16 - Ken Nienke On success, personal and organization growth, relationships20 Sep 202200:33:22

Welcome back Uncommon Leader Podcast nation!  I have got another fantastic guest for you this week.  His name is  Ken Nienke, former Lead Pastor at Fellowship Community Church in Salem, VA.  The theme of this podcast is organization and personal growth.  While Ken’s experience was in ministry, growing Fellowship from a small church that started in a basement with 69 people to a thriving three-campus church with over 1500 regular attendees is a leadership story that transcends industries.  What I see almost as impressive as the exponential growth was that Ken has stayed on at Fellowship for over 20 years now!

In this episode Ken and I discuss:

  • the value of mentors in his life
  • that problems are sometimes the greatest opportunity for success
  • in personal development, it's not always willpower, but it is God's power
  • Want to know the secret to a long marriage?  Listen in!
  • "It's not about success... It's about succession!"

I love having conversations with friends who make me laugh as well as challenge me and help me to grow.
