| Harry Burton on Harold Pinter | Part 3 | The Homecoming | 31 Aug 2024 | 02:28:36 | |
Harry is an actor, director, filmmaker and long time friend and collaborator of the late, great Harold Pinter, and it’s a privilege to welcome him back to the show for a third time! On our next journey into the world of Pinter we now turn our attention to “The Homecoming”. In the play we are invited into the home of Max and his sons Lenny, Joey and Teddy who’s visiting from overseas with his wife Ruth. Fresh from their travels around Europe, Teddy and Ruth return to the family home in North London where we meet his brothers and Uncle Sam. What follows is a power struggle among the men of the play and Ruth who holds the cards in the family’s search for supremacy. Harry and I delve into “The Homecoming” citing its historical references and what Pinter wanted to show through his own unique lens of ambiguity, that still beguiles audiences to this day. Myself and Harry break it down, talk more about Pinter and his writing, as well as share more stories about the great man himself. For anyone wishing to have a DVD copy of Harry’s superb documentary “Working With Pinter” which features Pinter himself and Henry Woolf, another fellow collaborator and friend of Harold, please contact him on his instagram below or drop me an email and we can get it sent to you. Please also know these are for private use only, nothing public. Harry’s Instagram: @harry_matt_burton Thank you as always Harry, here’s to our next conversation! Rachel is currently Head of Movement at the Guildford School of Acting. She trained at the London Contemporary Dance School, graduating in 2006, and in 2009 she was selected for a unique choreographic programme, Dance Beyond Borders, which took her work across Europe, including Germany, Belgium as well as across the UK. Rachel talks me through her love of movement, how it means different things to different practitioners, her work with animal studies and how people who say “it’s not their thing” can grow to love and embrace it. Not to mention, how integral it is to the actor’s process, finding the body of the character, finding the big expressions and condensing it down into a natural character’s characteristics. | Kate Godfrey Part 2 | Understanding Shakespeare | 24 Apr 2024 | 01:41:54
The return of Kate Godfrey! Kate is an actress, voice coach and one of the leading Shakespeare experts of our time. She returns to the show to unpick some Shakespeare monologues with me. Showing how she works with actors one on one to find the meaning in the text, helping them with how verse speeches are written and to play them as best you can. Paying attention to the punctuation, how long or short a thought is, and asking what the sub-text/wider story is and why would they be saying the things they're saying now? All culminating in the actor knowing the best way to communicating the speech to their fellow actors or the audience alone whilst serving the text accurately. The two pieces we look at are: - Iago, from Othello: "Thus do I ever make my fool my purse" - Act 1 Scene 3. - Gloucester, from Henry VI Part 3" "I can add colours to the chameleon" Act 3 Scene 2. Kate takes me through both speeches and together we dissect the rhythm, identify the thought patterns, the motivations of the characters and uncover the best way to perform them. I loved this episode and I hope you watching/listening who are actors who love your Shakespeare got as much from it as I did. Keep a look out for our second Shakespeare analysis on the more comedic and light-hearted monologues coming soon, watch this space! Thank you again Kate, always a pleasure. Chloe is currently reigning champion of the Birmingham Rep’s Monologue Slam competition with her piece “May I Take Your Order Please”, based on her time working in hospitality. In this episode we discuss Chloe’s brand new play that’s currently on tour across the UK, As SHE Likes It, a play bringing to light the sexual harassment that has/is going on in Hollywood and how it dates back back to the 1920s, not just to Harvey Weinstein. The play is based on the story of actress Patricia Douglas who was abused at an MGM party in 1937. Despite her efforts to bring her perpetrators to justice the case was thrown out and nothing came of it. I had the privilege to see and review the show with @uppercircle_theatre (review group that Chloe and I are part of) you can find it on my profile. It’s a fantastic piece packed with harsh truths that everyone needs to hear and see to stop this harassment from continuing. For stage:
Amongst many more… Emilio discusses his two huge theatre projects he’s been a part of this year, Best of Enemies (dir. Jeremy Herrin) and A Little Life (dir. Ivo Van Hove). From journalists to Gore Vidal’s (Zachary Quinto) life partner and the demands of a high fuelled energetic show with multiple costume changes and characters to jump between every night. For A Little Life he played “Andy” a doctor who has a difficult relationship with Jude (James Norton). Emilio talks about how he found the parallels of Andy’s character, how on one hand he’s a medical professional frustrated that his patient won’t take his advice, and on the other he’s a compassionate soul who doesn’t want to push his already deeply traumatised friend into something he doesn’t want to do. | Harry Burton on Harold Pinter | Part 2: No Man's Land | 28 Jul 2023 | 02:01:02
The return of Harry Burton! If it wasn't for Harry suggesting I recorded our last conversation about Harold Pinter I wouldn't have a podcast. Thank you Harry for not only your time but for giving me this platform! This time we turn our attention to Pinter's play "No Man's Land. Written in 1975, the play was recently dubbed as "mystifying as ever" by the Chicago Sun-Times. We follow Hirst and Spooner drinking whiskey in Hampsted one gloomy night. Do they know each other? Or are they playing a farcical game that's played amongst old friends? Audiences continue to ask what is this play about? Harry offers his thoughts as well as more stories about Harold, the people he met, and the stories he told. Catch the production on National Theatre At Home, and check out Harry's own YouTube channel for even more discussions about Pinter with some of the best actors and directors in the business. ⚠️ Trigger warning ⚠️: In this episode we discuss matters relating to CCE (Child Criminal Exploitation) and County Lives. Viewer and listener discretion is advised. Catherine holds a MA in Drama and Theatre from Royal Holloway and a PGCE in Drama from Central. As well as having been the course leader of the MA Applied Theatre at Central and a Head of School at the University of Portsmouth from 2019-2022, she’s been involved in projects such as the Wellcome Trust’s “Rethinking Sexology”, and has lead the “TransActing Project” with Central School of Speech of Drama and Gendered Intelligence. Not to mention she’s the current Head of School/commander-in-chief at the Guildford School of Acting. Her recent work has been involved in tacking the issue of County Lines and CCE (Child Criminal Exploitation) and the effect it has on young people in the UK. Children between the ages of 12-15 are being exploited into the gangs that make them sell drugs or worse. Once the innocent child is groomed into the gang it is difficult to escape. Catherine talks to me about how she’s tackling this issue with her online interactive story for use with young people, and her project “Cold Chips and Money” on how we can grow awareness of this issue and how the power of theatre and storytelling can help its cause. | Rosie Sheehy on Romeo and Julie at the National Theatre | 03 May 2023 | 01:20:58
Rosie Sheehy trained at RADA graduating in 2015, and has already done some incredible work thus far. Working for the RSC, the Sherman Theatre and most recently, the National Theatre in London. Rosie recently finished Romeo and Julie a contemporary adaptation of Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet, written by the great Gary Owen. It played at the Sherman Theatre, the National and the Sherman again for the final weeks of the tour. Rosie takes me through the journey she's been on with the play, playing alongside Callum Scott Howells and the brilliance of Gary Owens' writing. She's also appeared on stage in Samuel D. Hunter's play The Whale where she played Ellie (played by Sadie Sink in the film with Brendan Fraser), and also on TV in HBO's masterpiece Chernobyl. A really touching episode discussing the play and the cruel and heartbreaking undercurrent of both this new adaptation and the original play, one that I enjoyed very much. David Grindley is a theatre director that has been at the helm of many shows across the UK and the world. One of his most celebrated shows is R.C. Sherriff's play Journey's End set in the trenches in the final stages of WWI. A truly excellent play that David has directed multiple times. He's directed it in the West End and on Broadway in 2007, where he won a Tony award for the Best Revival of a play. He talks about how he discovered the play, how to play tension, and how actors find their feet in the rehearsal room. Thank you David, really enjoyed your masterclass in directing for the theatre! | Chris and Tom Godwin on The Woman in Black | 20 Oct 2022 | 01:11:52
Chris and Tom Godwin are actors with a supreme wealth of experience on stage, screen and television. They were the first father and son to play the roles of Arthur Kipps and The Actor in the West End in the outstanding play The Woman in Black. They both take me through what's it like to scare an audience, working with director Robin Herford, and how rewarding it is to perform such a brilliant text. Thank you both for your time and your generosity to share with me your experience of this play and your careers!
