Episode 162 - Is My Lived Experience More Important Than Your Future One?09 Nov 202500:24:55

In this episode, I explore one of the most delicate and important questions in birth work: Is my lived experience more important than your future one?

So many women feel torn between wanting to share their birth story — whether it was empowering, challenging, or deeply traumatic — and wanting to protect others from fear or unrealistic expectations. But how do we find the balance? How do we share truthfully without limiting what’s possible for someone else?

This conversation unpacks the tension between past experience and future potential. Together, we look at how to reflect on your own birth, what to learn from it, and how to share your story responsibly — so that both honesty and hope can exist side by side.

 Key Takeaways:

  • Your lived experience matters deeply — but it’s not a template for anyone else’s.
  • Sharing your story can help others, but only when it’s framed with context and possibility.
  • Negative stories can warn, but they shouldn’t define someone else’s limits.
  • Positive stories bring hope, balance, and proof of what’s possible.
  • Reflection is powerful: understanding your own birth can help you prepare differently next time.
  • Protecting someone’s dream of a physiological birth doesn’t mean sugar-coating reality — it means giving space for hope and autonomy.

Episode 161 - The Waiting Game – Why Patience in Late Pregnancy Matters More Than Ever02 Nov 202500:45:47

In this episode, I talk about one of the most emotionally testing times in pregnancy — the waiting game.

When your due date is approaching, or has come and gone, it can feel as though the world is on pause while everyone keeps asking, 'Have you had the baby yet?'

I explore what this waiting period can really feel like — the impatience, the frustration, and the mental tug of war that happens when your baby still isn’t ready to arrive.

I also talk about the pressure that can build when conversations about induction of labour start, and how those offers can influence how you feel about your body, your baby, and the timing of birth.

We chat about the idea that 42 weeks is often considered the outer limit of pregnancy — but how that’s not true for everyone. For many women, birth can unfold safely and beautifully beyond that point. Still, talking about 42 weeks helps shift the focus away from the growing trend of early induction at 39 weeks, which can interrupt the natural rhythm of both mother and baby.

I also share some of the incredible support available during this time from myself, Shellie Poulter, and Kemi Johnson, who all offer services to help women navigate these later stages of pregnancy with confidence and calm. I’ll include their links below.

If you’re currently waiting — or supporting someone who is — this episode will help you find reassurance, perspective, and patience in those final days. Your baby will come, and how you navigate this time matters just as much as the birth itself.

Episode 152 - Dr Rachel Reed - Meconium Stained Amniotic Fluid: variation or complication?25 May 202501:05:03

It's the season finale, and I’m delighted to wrap up with a powerful and thought-provoking conversation featuring the incredible Dr Rachel Reed - midwife, educator, author, and advocate for physiological birth.

In this episode, we dive deep into the topic of Meconium-Stained Amniotic Fluid something that often triggers alarm bells during labour. But should it? Rachel helps us unpack the physiology, the myths, and the medical responses surrounding meconium in the waters.

This conversation is essential listening for anyone preparing for birth, especially those wanting to feel informed and empowered in situations where the language of risk is used to justify intervention.

We explore:

  • What meconium actually is - and when it’s considered 'normal'
  • Why the presence of meconium doesn’t always mean distress
  • The difference between thin and thick meconium - and why that matters
  • How maternity systems often respond to meconium stained amniotic fluid
  • How to approach decision-making with confidence and context

About Dr Rachel Reed:
Rachel is renowned for her evidence-based approach and her ability to reframe complex birth topics with clarity and wisdom. She’s the author of Reclaiming Childbirth as a Rite of Passage, and Why Induction Matters. Her MidwifeThinking blog became a go-to resource for birth professionals and parents alike.

Episode 61 - Understanding All 3 Ways You Can Give Birth25 Sep 202200:30:26

I am back with Season 3 of the podcast, and in this episode I am flying solo.
I wanted to record this episode alone and share with you all my personal stance on the difference between the three ways you can give birth. I believe it is essential for every pregnant woman or person to fully understand their options when planning for birth so that when you know the 3 different types of birth, you can prevent yourself from accidentally accepting interventions or procedures without realising the consequences of those decisions.
Stepping into your power and taking ownership of your birth is what can make it a positive experience.

I hope you enjoy this episode. If so, please leave a 5 *rating and review and share it with your friends and on social media.  You can tag me @thultimatebirthpartner

Episode 54 - Vaginal Breech VBAC birth in an MLU - Louisa's story13 Feb 202201:06:12

In this episode, I am chatting to Louisa, a mum of 3, who recently gave birth in a Midwife Led Unit to a breech baby.

Louisa had a C-section with her first baby who was also breech and then went on to have a VBAC (Vaginal Birth After Caesarean) for her 2nd.

Her preparation for her 3rd baby was very thorough, in order to achieve a similar experience to her 2nd birth.

After realising at the end of the pregnancy that her baby was breech, and clearly very comfortable in that position, she sought out help and support to achieve a vaginal breech birth.

She looked into the opti breech project and talked to others like Kemi @kemibirthjoyjohnson, Laura @laura_lemontreebirth Zara @doulabud and Sheryl @simply_natal_healing_birth. She also listened to Dr Stu @birthinginstincts on the Better Birth podcast and used the skills of her hypnobirthing teacher from @loveyourbirth_training.

Episode 151 - Amelia's Story - MLU Birth with High BMI and Gestational Diabetes18 May 202501:08:42

In this inspiring episode, I’m joined by Amelia, who shares her powerful birth stories - welcoming both of her daughters in a Midwife Led Unit, despite being labelled ‘high risk’ due to a high BMI and insulin-controlled gestational diabetes.

Amelia’s journey is a testament to what’s possible when a woman is supported to trust her instincts, advocate for herself, and remain at the centre of her care.

In our conversation, Amelia reflects on:

  • The challenges and judgements she faced due to her BMI
  • How she stayed informed and confident in her choices
  • Building a relationship of trust with her midwives
  • Navigating the medicalised narrative around gestational diabetes
  • The difference respectful, individualised care made in her outcomes

This episode offers hope to anyone who’s been told their body isn’t capable of physiological birth - and a reminder that evidence-based care and personal autonomy can and should go hand-in-hand.

In the first of two episodes, Sheryl Wynne shares with us her two very different birth experiences.  Sheryl honestly and openly describes how her first birth was very traumatic for her, and how the support she received was lacking, throughout her experience.  She also takes us on the journey she went on postnatally to discover, that she wasn't to blame for the experience she had.

In becoming aware of trauma, she was able to have a very positive second birth and has moved forward to support others to recognise what it means to be trauma-informed.

Episode 48 - Why I HATE contraction apps - an unnecessary intervention!02 Jan 202200:19:53

In this episode, I give my top 3 reasons why I hate contraction apps.

I have a good old rant about this seemingly innocent gadget, that is in fact an intervention.

You would be amazed at the amount of births that are sabotaged by an app that does not take into account what is actually happening in the birth room - as it cannot take into consideration the behaviour of the labouring woman or person.

As a birth partner, it is even more important that you let birth happen and only check in on the time if it is appropriate at that moment - and a decision needs to be made.

Don't let an app hijack your birth experience!

Episode 45 - Postnatal Support and 'Covid Babies' with Professor Amy Brown 05 Dec 202100:52:48

In this week's episode of the podcast, I had the privilege of chatting to the very lovely Professor Amy Brown.

Amy is a professor of maternal and child public health at Swansea University. She is the director of their research center - LIFT (Lactation Infant Feeding and Translation), and the author of 10 books and numerous research articles which can be found on her website.

During this episode, we chat about the importance of preparation in pregnancy for the postnatal period.

How all birth partners need to understand in pregnancy, that their role is to provide care to the woman and the baby in those early days and weeks after birth, which will help to facilitate feeding - if that is what the new mother wants to achieve.

Why it is vital that the right level of support is offered during the early days and continues on for the months that follow, which will hopefully eliminate trauma and grief, that can be experienced if and when a breastfeeding journey ends.

We also discuss some of Amy’s books, including her latest ‘Covid Babies’ which was released last week. You can buy a signed copy of Amy’s book from her website  - https://professoramybrown.co.uk

Episode 150 - Why I Left the NHS - Midwife Insights with Rosemary11 May 202501:21:02

In this powerful episode, I’m joined by former NHS midwife Rosemary, who bravely opens up about her time working within the UK’s maternity system - and why she ultimately made the difficult decision to walk away.

With her knowledge and experience of women-centred care, Rosemary speaks candidly about the challenges she faced as a midwife, from rising pressures to the emotional toll of witnessing care that didn’t align with her values.

Rosemary shares what it means to support physiological birth within institutional constraints, and why leaving was the only way to stay true to herself - and what she’s doing now

Whether you’re pregnant, a birth worker, or simply curious about what happens behind the scenes of the maternity system, Rosemary’s story will stay with you.

Episode 41 - Rob's story - Father of 3 shares his experiences of becoming a dad!07 Nov 202100:48:22

In this week's episode, I am chatting with Rob Geraghty who candidly shares his experiences of being a birth partner, and becoming a father of 3 children.

So often the focus in maternity care is around supporting the women during pregnancy and birth, so it is easy to forget the partner and ask how they are doing.

Rob admits that he didn't always find it easy in the beginning, and was happier when he was able to get back to more of a work-life balance.  He points out that not all dads will enjoy being around babies and small children all of the time, and that it is important to try to carve out some time to do things that they enjoy.

Rob certainly opened my eyes to  the way that some dads may feel, and I am grateful to other men like Scott Mair who runs Paternal Mental Health Support @p_m_h_support offering dads a platform to ensure that they are well supported as they navigate fatherhood.

Episode 40 - Human rights in childbirth - with birth activist Emma Ashworth31 Oct 202101:04:07

In today's episode, I am chatting with birth rights activist Emma Ashworth about the need to understand your rights in pregnancy and birth, in order to ensure that your plans for birth are not affected by the fear-based practice that we see in maternity services today.
We also hear Emma talk about the current midwifery crisis in the NHS and how to navigate your birth options during this time.

This episode contains some important truths regarding issues that pregnant women and people face when navigating the healthcare system.

If you are pregnant and you want to wrap your self up in a bubble of positivity, then this episode might not be for you. SO please switch it off and perhaps listen to it another time.

It is however an important discussion that highlights areas that many of us should be made aware of - in order to assert our rights if needs be during pregnancy, birth or the early postnatal period.

Episode 36 - Male Midwife James shares his story of supporting physiological birth03 Oct 202100:56:25

In this episode, I am speaking to James, a male midwife who is a true inspiration to so many birth keepers.

James has a real passion to support pregnant women and people through physiological childbirth, and he shares with us his story, of how he always wanted to be a midwife from a very young age - and his journey to fulfilling that dream.

He now works in rural Wales, where the service is midwife-led only. With no hospitals close by, families in his care are offered the opportunity to give birth with local midwives in attendance, either at home or in a stand-alone Midwifery Led Unit (MLU).  This model of 'continuity of carer' means that these families are able to achieve physiological birth more easily, with the level of support that the midwives offer, and transfer rates are low.

Episode 34 - Molly O'Brien talks about body imbalance and biomechanics for labour and birth19 Sep 202100:57:23

In this episode, I am talking to the very knowledgeable midwife Molly O'Brien about imbalances in the body that can affect the labour and birth process.

It is important to remember that most women and birthing people will not have an issue giving birth to their babies.  In modern times, however, we sit a lot, we drive everywhere, and sometimes we have accidents or falls that can affect the fascia in our bodies, resulting in tight areas that may stop the baby from moving through easily.  Body alignment and a good understanding of the body, especially the pelvis, can help all birth partners - including doulas and midwives to recognise that if they notice the baby is not coming easily, then there are some simple solutions to create more space for the baby to pass through.

Molly outlines what you can do as a birth partner to help during labour if you find yourself supporting a woman who is experiencing pain during labour that is outside of the uterus.

Molly's course is available online for all -  www.optimalbirth.co.uk

Episode 149 - Postpartum Prolapse - And Why We Need to be Talking About It!04 May 202501:06:55

In this essential episode, I open up a conversation with Hayley Schoenberg and Dr Margo, where they explain, that far too many women are suffering from postpartum prolapse - in silence.

Despite how common it is, prolapse is rarely discussed during pregnancy, and even less so after birth. Yet it can have a profound physical and emotional impact on a woman's life. It's time to break the silence.

In this episode, we explore:

  • What postpartum prolapse actually is
  • The symptoms that are too often dismissed or normalised
  • Why so many women feel shocked, ashamed, or let down when they discover they have a prolapse
  • How the language we use around birth and recovery plays a role in this silence
  • Why informed preparation before birth is key to preventing or reducing risk
  • What real support looks like - and how we can do better

Whether you're a birth partner, a birth professional, or someone navigating your own postpartum recovery, this episode is for you.

Let’s shine a light on this hidden struggle and advocate for real change in postpartum care.

Episode 30 - Stillbirth - The devastating loss of a baby and gaining support as you move forward18 Jul 202100:48:04

In this episode, I talk to Amy from the Lily Mae Foundation - a charity which works tirelessly to provide support to anyone who experiences stillbirth, miscarriage, neonatal death or medical termination.

Amy shares what it feels like to find out that your baby has no heartbeat, and her experience of going through the loss of a stillborn baby.  She talks about the decision making process that comes with that awful news, and her subsequent labour and birth. We also talk about deciding to become pregnant again, and the feelings that come up during that time. This is such an important topic which so many struggle to discuss due to it’s very nature, but I wanted to ensure that we cover all aspects of antenatal preparation on this podcast.

If you experience the loss of a child at any stage of pregnancy or birth, then you can seek support from organisations like Amy's.

Episode 29 - Paternal Mental Health - Support for fathers who experience birth trauma11 Jul 202100:52:38

In this episode, I am talking to Scott Mair about Paternal Mental Health!!

We get into a discussion about why it is important that all pregnant women and their birth partners should know that if the birth doesn't go according to plan, especially if interventions occur, then it is not uncommon for one or both parents to feel traumatised.

While there is typically support available for the postnatal woman, there is little consideration for the birth partner or dad, who may have been affected by the experience but is unable to share their feelings or understand them.

Scott Mair, runs PMH Support, helping fathers to receive help and information about paternal mental health, particularly around birth trauma.

Episode 148 - Why a Physiological Birth in 2025 Requires More Than Just a Birth Plan27 Apr 202500:32:14

In today’s episode, I explore one of the most profound truths about birth - the fact that you are the creator of life. I dive into how modern maternity services undermine women's instincts, why doubt is a normal part of labour, and how the subconscious work of pregnancy is what truly saves women in the birth room.

I explore why achieving a physiological birth in 2025 is about more than just having a birth plan. While a plan is a great starting point, it’s not enough to guarantee a hands-off, natural birth experience in today’s birth landscape.

If you are preparing for birth and ready to reconnect with your instincts, I strongly recommend you join Discover Your North Star - my unique birth preparation course designed to help you do the inner work that will carry you through birth and beyond.

It's aim is to empower you by transforming your mindset, and delve deep into your subconscious to reframe limiting beliefs and unlock your true potential. Unlike traditional antenatal programs that primarily focus on the physical aspects of childbirth, this course offers a holistic approach, addressing the mental and emotional facets of the journey into motherhood.

You will engage in self-reflective exercises and mindset-shifting techniques, equipping you with the tools to navigate motherhood with confidence, clarity, and a profound sense of purpose.

In addition, you will create a Birth Manifesto® - a personalised declaration that articulates your values, desires, and intentions for your birth experience. This powerful tool empowers you to:

  • Clarify Your Vision: Define what a positive birth means to you, setting clear expectations.
  • Enhance Communication: Effectively convey your preferences to your birth team, ensuring they understand and respect your wishes.
  • Boost Confidence: Feel more in control and prepared, reducing anxiety and fostering a sense of empowerment.

By crafting your Birth Manifesto®, you take an active role in shaping your birth journey, aligning it with your personal beliefs and aspirations.

Episode 22 - Physiological birth and top tips to achieving one - with Birth Keeper Kemi Johnson22 May 202100:51:46

During this episode, I am speaking with the incredible Kemi Johnson, a fully trained midwife, and birth keeper, who dedicates her time to calling out bad practice within the NHS maternity system, and speaking up for pregnant women and birthing people to help them to discover the benefits of physiological birth. Kemi is currently in Dara Salaam in Tanzania, so the sound quality reflects this.

Like many of us, her aim is to ensure that not only are new parents having positive birth experiences but their babies are not forced to come before they are ready and pumped with unnecessary medications to combat the overuse of interventions.

Physiological birth is to give birth in the way that nature intended and is the default mode of birth for humans and all other mammals.

Kemi can be found at @kemibirthjoyjohnson on Instagram

Episode 20 - Postnatal Planning - Essential Preparation in Pregnancy 09 May 202100:48:34

In this week's episode, I am chatting to the lovely Zare de Candole who is a birth and postnatal doula amongst many other things.  She shares her great wisdom of what is required when preparing for the baby's arrival during pregnancy. She makes many recommendations about using a planning journal to ensure that anyone expecting a baby considers the wide variety of issues that may arise in the early days with a newborn, and how to ensure that you are all cared for and the new mother and baby are nurtured  to facilitate bonding.

A Poem from Zara
Support is unconditional. It is listening…not judging, not telling your own story

We are here to help women discover what they are feeling…not to make the feelings go away

We are here to help a woman identify her options…not to tell her what options to choose.

We are here to discuss steps with a woman…not to take the steps for her.

We are here to help a woman discover her own strength…not to rescue her and leave her still vulnerable.

We are here to help a woman discover she can help herself…not to take that responsibility for her.

We are here to help a woman learn to choose…not to make it unnecessary for her to make difficult choices.
