| Death by Denim - From house to club | 28 May 2023 | 00:18:15 | |
Not many bands had a bigger 2022 than Death By Denim. The Perth band released their critically acclaimed second album Moonbow, they hit the road on a huge album tour, they signed a new record deal, and casually took on Harry Styles’ Watermelon Sugar for triple j’s Like A Version. And in classic fashion, the band are now keeping the good vibes going by releasing a brilliant, gleaming new EP called My House Is A Club. They’re currently in the middle of their tour, and we were so happy to be joined by Nik and Palle from Death by Denim. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
| Gena Rose Bruce explores the deep without holding her breath | 28 May 2023 | 00:24:26 | |
Music can make you feel a certain way, or can you make music feel a certain way? When you listen to Gena Rose Bruce’s music, you’re never quite sure if you were in that wistful, thoughtful and dreamy state before you started listening to it, or after. But one part always prevails. Love. Gena’s music has the ability to make you really feel and transport you to a place where love endures. It’s full of emotion, place and whimsy, but also a definite drive to help you discover (or destroy) yourself. 'Deep Is The Way' is the second album from the Melbourne singer-songwriter’s music and like her first from 2019, ‘Can’t Make You Love Me’, it’s packed full of heart-on-the-sleeve passion, admissions and a few little bops! | Private Function - Calculated Mayhem | 28 May 2023 | 00:19:09
Is there a band in Australia that has more fun than Private Function? We think not. Since they first cracked onto the scene in late 2016, the punks from Melbourne have made it their mission to deliver music that is punchy, energetic, enjoyable, and absolutely irreverent. Their new album, Hello Asshole, or as you might see it written, 370HSSV 0773H, is another blistering collection of tracks, including some we’ve already played on this show: ‘jusavinageez’ and ‘Seize & Destroy’. We welcomed Private Function’s frontman, Chris Penney, to the show to talk through why PF are still on top. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
| Urthboy savours the past and accepts the future | 09 Mar 2023 | 00:42:45 | |
Not many artists have made as big an impact on Australian music as our guest today. | Bright. Blue. Babitha. | 09 Mar 2023 | 00:25:46
When you make the move to the city from a rural area, there’s no doubt it’s a scary proposition. Making friends and fitting in can be a challenge, let alone pursuing your passions. Our guest today not only did that, but has established herself into the local music scene so well, you may not even realise she is actually a country gal. Babitha burst onto the scene in 2019 seemingly out of nowhere, but with such a complete sound, thoughtful lyrics and a stunning voice, you take the time to stop and listen and appreciate this talent that we are so lucky to have in our midst. With her debut record, Brighter Side of Blue, out now and a busy 2023 laid out in front of her, Babitha joined us in the 2ser studios for a chat! | WAAX take stock before burning bright | 18 Aug 2022 | 00:21:08
Ever since the opening lines of Wisdom Teeth in 2014, we’ve been hooked on the driving and passionate Brisbane-based punk of WAAX. Their path has been a tumultuous one, but after Big Grief, their debut album was released in 2019, the band delivered some visceral live shows to legions of fans before everything suddenly shut-down a year later. With so much uncertainty around the future of live music, it was a tough time to know what was coming next, and for WAAX, a band reliant on performing, what was next? Now we know, as their second album, ‘At Least I’m Free’ has been unleashed on the world and it’s a huge step in the evolution of this band. Driven by personal experience and delivered with the same passion we’ve come to know and love from the whole group, but in particular, lead singer, Marie ‘Maz’ Devita. She’s not yelling, she just Italian, and we were excited to welcome Maz from WAAX to The Tuckshop! See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
| Gang of Youths – Megastars in realtime | 18 Aug 2022 | 00:14:32 | |
In a handful of years, Gang of Youths have grown from a beloved Sydney band into a global sensation, and arguably Australia’s biggest export playing right now. Earlier this year, they released angel in realtime, the long-awaited and highly anticipated followup to 2017’s Go Farther In Lightness, which won them basically every award it could at the ARIAs and was one of the best rock records of the decade. In so many ways, angel in realtime is classic Gang of Youths – full-hearted, open, stadium-sized. But there are also plenty of new sounds and influences bubbling under the surface. They’re back in Australia on their biggest ever tour, and we’re so excited to welcome bassist Max Dunn to the Tuckshop this week. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
| Phil Jamieson Isn’t Just Somebody | 18 Aug 2022 | 00:25:50 | |
So, what happens when lead singers of mighty rock bands branch out on their own, taking all of that powerful stage presence and musical drive into the solo sphere? What happens when the collective becomes a singular? How does it affect the creative process, but more importantly, what happens to the psyche of someone branching out on their own? We found out on The Tuckshop as we chatted to Grinspoon’s charismatic, cheeky and super talented front man, Phil Jamieson about his debut solo record, Somebody Else and he performed the title track live in the 2ser studio! | Royal Chant will never be a waste of time | 10 Jul 2022 | 00:26:27
Some bands work a little, some work hard and then there’s Royal Chant. Back in 2009, a new trio from Port Macquarie, the central coast of NSW, released a track and video on Bandcamp. It was called Coughing Fits and it started something glorious! 13 years on, almost to the day and Royal Chant have released their 9th album, ‘Anyways and also Sorry’ and it continues the prolific, but high quality of a group driven to release, perform and share their musical path with the world. | Sampa the Great leads the way to an Afrofuture | 22 Jun 2022 | 00:18:15
The return of Vivid to Sydney has seen the return of an artist whose AnAfroFuture show was to be a cornerstone of last year’s event. Instead, she exploded onto the Sydney Opera House stage in 2022 with a performance that brings her African home of Zambia to the main stage of Australia and delighted her fans, starved of watching her blossoming talent. Sampa the Great is just getting started, even though she has already claimed the Australian Music Prize, TWICE as well as a pile of other accolades. Her sheer dynamic performance, her mash of hip-hop, R&B and homeland influences have sent waves around the world with performances at Coachella and Glastonbury festivals on her 2022 calendar. On the eve of her long-awaited live return to her second home of Australia, Sampa the Great took some time to chat to Jules and Mick about the silver linings of remaining in Africa during the pandemic and what that means for her own future. | Dorsal Fins twinkle brightly on album three | 22 Jun 2022 | 00:24:49
Bands can be fluid. It’s not unheard of for group members to ebb and flow and for sounds to evolve along with the members, but what happens when a band known for being a collective cuts it all back to three members? This is what Dorsal Fins have done with their third album, Star of the Show, their most eclectic yet, or did they? Starting back in 2014 as a mixture of artists from Saskwatch, Eagle & The Worm, The Bamboos and New Gods, they released two albums in as many years, but now, six years since their second they return as a trio with core members, Ella Thompson, Liam McGorry and Jarrad Brown continuing the Fins story, with a bunch of friends still very much close by! Jarrad Brown joined Mick and Jules to discuss the new album and all things Dorsal! See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

| Tyne-James Organ | 27 May 2025 | 00:24:51 | |
In 2019, a singer-songwriter from Wollongong released an EP called Persevere. It was a collection of urgent, emotional, and endlessly memorable tracks, and it clearly connected with fans, because the EP was certified Gold in Australia. It was a prophetic start for Tyne-James Organ, who went on to release an excellent debut album called Necessary Evil in 2021, propelled by the immensely popular single Sunday Suit. Now, Tyne-James has returned with second album The Other Side, an album that is both gut-wrenching and life-affirming, just like life itself really? There are many twists and turns on the record, which is another excellent collection of songs from the now Sydney-based artist. He’s just about to head out on tour, and we welcomed Tyne-James Organ to The Tuckshop Takeaway. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
| Uncovering The Boy within Harvey Sutherland | 10 May 2022 | 00:19:03 | |
He has described himself as a disco minimalist. An artist that can create a vibe, a groove, a beat from what sounds like the smallest of sounds. Of course, he can also blow you away with bombastic synths and dynamic melodies. Harvey Sutherland has a way of taking you on a journey with every song. Harvey (or Mike Katz to his friends) has been on the electronic music scene for over a decade, but the artist has not yet released a full-length album – until now. The Lazy Eyes are a band that have been plying their trade, slowly but surely over the last 5-6 years and this has culminated in their debut album, Songbook, released on Thursday, and surely an album that will see them explode. | Camp Cope provide a lesson in finding comfort | 05 Apr 2022 | 00:23:44
“Gorgeously restrained and gentle” is probably not a phrase that would have been used to describe our guest a few years ago. Melbourne’s Camp Cope made their name with scorching records like their debut self-titled and 2018’s How to Socialise and Make Friends – they were albums that railed, with fury and passion, against the sexism and inequality that exists within Australia. On their new album, Running with the Hurricane, the trio – which consists of Georgia Maq, Kelly-Dawn Helmrich, and Sarah Thompson – changed tack a bit, switching out the punk fury for gorgeous alt-country. It’s a moving listen from one of Australia’s best bands The Tuckshop were excited to welcome back Kelly to tell us all about it! See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Through those bands they’ve released albums that have changed the course of Australian music. | The Predators Emerge From The Wilderness | 28 Nov 2021 | 00:21:55
The Predators have been lurking. The trio of Steven Bishop, Ian Haug and John Collins – friends since school, have always had the idea of creating a debut album – and 16 years after forming the group, which was the original core of Powderfinger, they have released their debut album, Everybody Loves. It’s a powerful exploration through retro post-punk sounds, with a healthy dose of classic Australian rock influence thrown in and stands as a worthy milestone for three musicians that have explored many genres (and jobs!) throughout their careers. The Tuckshop caught up with with Ian Haug and Steve Bishop as J.C. set up their gear in the background for their rehearsal! See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

| The Hard-Ons’ Peter Black Riffs On Album 13 | 14 Nov 2021 | 00:25:06 | |
When a band like The Hard-Ons gives you a call and asks you to be the lead singer, you probably don’t take too long to answer. This was the situation when the band, with 40 years of history, found themselves (again) without a singer and the search for a front-person began. On a whim, it seems, they gave fellow Australian music royalty, Tim Rogers a call, and the rest, as they say is history. That history has now etched Hard-ons 13th album, The rocking, riffy and rollicking Sorry Sir, But That Riff’s Taken. Peter Black joined the Tuckshop to uncover some of the stories behind lucky 13. But that’s what he has done with Blue Volume, an album that traverses life through the lens of a musician, a wordsmith and somebody that knows exactly how to say it all without saying too much. He joined Mick & Jules on The Tuckshop to dive into the making of his record. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
