The importance of My Team, F1 World and anti-cheat – F1 23’s Lee Mather | S7 E1324 Jul 202300:29:18

A Traxion Podcast interview with Senior Creative Director at Electronic Arts, Codemasters, Lee Mather – who’s responsible for the official Formula 1 game’s direction each year.

Mather has worked on the F1 games since 2008, spanning a 15-year stint. We asked him about his time working on the yearly motorsport titles, but also what the thinking was behind the F1 World game mode, if we’ll see more Braking Point in the future and how the new car handling was developed.

We also touch upon the importance of esports and league racing, and the company’s plans to implement anti-cheat measures. Will classic cars ever make a return? Is My Team and Driver Career still important for the franchise? Are we to expect more limited-time liveries?

All of these key questions are answered – but of course, be sure to leave your F1 23 feedback in the comments below!

Oracle Red Bull Racing Esports driver Sebastian Job has tasted virtual success, previously winning the Porsche Esports Supercup world championship on iRacing and he currently competes at the top level of sim racing: ESL R1, F1 and Le Mans Virtual to name but a few are on his CV so far.

But where next? The actual Red Bull Racing Formula 1 team, that's where.

John Munro spoke to Job at the team's Milton Keynes base to hear what it's like working with an F1 outfit and also the differences between sim racing and motorsport simulation.

Are there transferable skills? Did his work affect real-world set-ups? Can we have a go too, please??

This is an extended director's cut of a video interview we first published in February, which you can watch here: https://youtu.be/YhZvIgqbAxw

RaceRoom’s fightback plan with Jean-François Chardon | S6 E929 May 202300:53:20

On this episode of the Traxion.GG Podcast, we are joined by Jean-François Chardon, Head of Studio at KW Studios, responsible for RaceRoom Racing Experience.

He’s worked at what was formerly SimBin Studios, then Sector3 and now KW Studios since 2009, so this interview is hopefully interesting for those who’d like to know more about RaceRoom’s story and are part of the cognoscenti.

We also hear about a prior Unreal engine prototype and how the platform is now in a strong place for the future, with the investment needed to hire developers and a clear plan for revised UI, ranked multiplayer and a content roadmap.

The team is even investigating a new graphics engine as it commits to the long-term evolution of the platform. We even touch upon the now-failed GTR3 project and how it impacted development.

This, then, is why RaceRoom is one to watch in 2023 and beyond, with host Thomas Harrison-Lord.

David Karapetianm, aka Dave Gaming, has over 200,000 YouTube subscribers and 90,000 Twitch followers and primarily creates F1 game content, whether that’s the driving games by EA Sports or the management titles by Frontier Developments.

There’s no one better to ask about the current state of Formula 1 gaming, his favourite titles to date and what EA SPORTS F1 23 and F1 Manager 2023 must do in order to succeed.

His content is primarily in German, but in this English-language interview, Thomas Harrison-Lord gets to the bottom of Dave Gaming’s rise to prominence, his ‘go niche go big’ mantra and where his passion for the sport comes from.

Jardier and the future of Assetto Corsa Competizione | S6 E710 May 202300:52:18

Is version 1.9 a step forward? Will ACC continue to receive support? What’s it like creating a sim racing community? Jardier reveals all.

On this episode of the Traxion.GG Podcast, Thomas Harrison-Lord speaks to Jaroslav Honzík, aka Jardier, about his sim racing content creator and esports career, but also, crucially, what the future may have in store for Assetto Corsa Competizione.

While Jardier does create content about, and stream playing, iRacing, Richard Burns Rally and rFactor 2, he’s known for his ACC racing, community events and SRO-based competition. He’s the 2021 Alpine Esports champion to boot.

So here, we discussed the hard work and dedication it takes to reach 100,000 YouTube subscribers, whether league and race-finding services are good for sim racing and what he’d like to see next from Kunos Simulazioni.

We also touch upon his recent Alpine GT4 test at Magny-Cours and why it’s been difficult to bounce back from the taste of real-world motorsport.

How Formula Retro Racing: World Tour was created | S6 E403 Apr 202300:21:06

On this episode, we are joined by Andrew Jeffreys, aka Repixel8, and Jon Wetherall from CGA Studio to talk Formula Retro Racing: World Tour.

So often, we take the racing game and sim racing scene a bit too seriously. Formula Retro Racing: World Tour is a vivid, approachable, retro driving title that harks back to the arcade cabinet.

It’s just simple fun, but with contemporary features, such as virtual reality and online leaderboards.

With Andrew the solo developer of the 2020 original, he and CGA have partnered up for a 2023 sequel, and it’s this we’re discussing.

Full disclosure, this was recorded a month or two ago, since this conversation the game is available now on PC, Switch and Xbox, with PlayStation following in April. We did encounter some internet challenges too, which we’ve tried to edit around.

So, without further ado, how Formula Retro Racing: World Tour was created and why you should check it out.

Joining us are:

  • Andrew Jeffreys, Repixel8
  • Jon Wetherall, CGA Studio

This third game is developed by RaceWard Studio, part of NACON Studio Milan, who previously created RiMS Racing – a road motorcycle simulator released in 2021.

We visited the Italian studio recently to speak to the team behind the upcoming title and also TT competitor Davey Todd, gaining insight into its development and certain design choices.

Make no mistake, this is a brave game with some surprising features. The full Snaefell Mountain Course, laser-scanned, is present and it aims to be an accurate representation of the event.

But, you can now traverse over 200kms of island in-between events and compete in optional challenges in the open-world environment.

Joining us are:

  • Fabio Respighi, Head of Design.
  • Alex Carullo, Lead Gameplay Designer
  • Davey Todd, Milenco by Padgett’s Motorcycles rider

TT Isle of Man: Ridge on the Edge 3 launches 11th May 2023 for PC (Epic and Steam), PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S and Nintendo Switch.

How LEGO 2K Drive redefines family driving games | S6 E223 Mar 202300:21:29

We’re back, with a brand new season, and we have a lot coming up for you so thank you for listening!

Join Thomas Harrison-Lord, Editor in Chief of the Traxion.GG website as he speaks to Mark Pierce, Executive Producer and Emmanuel Valdez, Art Director, from developer Visual Concepts South.

In this episode, we discuss their brand new driving game, targeted at families: Lego 2K Drive.

It’s open world, coming soon to both PC and console, features cross-platform online multiplayer, can be played online or via couch co-op and will hopefully appeal to a younger audience, but parents and grizzled racing games fans alike.

We’ve been hands-on with an early preview build of the game at 2K’s London offices recently, hence this discussion, but also a full article on the Traxion.GG website and video on our YouTube Channel.

It’s quite the departure for 2K, who hasn’t been active in the racing game scene for several years, and developers Visual Concepts, who usually make the WWE and NBA games. But here, you will be able to understand how it hired a brand new team for this LEGO game, the first in a multi-title deal.

LEGO 2K Drive releases on 19th May 2023 for PC, Xbox, PlayStation and Switch.

Don’t forget you can email podcast@traxion.gg if you have any questions about sim racing you’d like us to answer.

Why Thrustmaster went direct drive with Xavier Pieuchot | S5 E1804 Jan 202300:38:17

Joining Thomas Harrison-Lord today on this episode is Xavier Pieuchot, Product Marketing Manager at Thrustmaster.

It’s been a big month for the gaming and simulation equipment manufacturer, as its first-ever direct drive wheel base – the T818 – was launched and shipped to its first customers.

Here at Traxion.GG, we were lucky enough to receive one of the first loan units for review. But, we wanted to get deeper under the skin of the T818 and see why the American-French company chose now as the time to enter the increasingly competitive direct drive market, which has quickly become the expected technology for sim racing.

We cover its launch, development process, why it’s manufactured in France and console support.

Is this the most pivotal moment in its 32-year history? Let’s find out…

The future of rally games with Autosport and Motorsport.com’s Tom Howard | S5 E1726 Dec 202200:40:08

On this episode, it’s the festive period, so we hope you are enjoying at least a day off to put your feet up. With this in mind, today’s conversation is a little less formal and a bit more relaxed.

Joining Thomas Harrison-Lord to discuss the future of rally games is Autosport and Motorsport.com’s WRC Editor Tom Howard.

We regale our experiences with the most recent World Rally Championship game, Generations, then look ahead to what we’d like to see in 2023 when EA Sports’ first official WRC game releases.

Tom also recounts the time earlier in the year when he was Toyota Gazoo Racing World Rally Team driver Takamoto Katsuta’s co-driver for a stage in a current Rally1-spec Yaris.

As you can tell, we’re both rally fanatics or bobble-hatters. So, the conversation flows into the rally cars we’d like to see more of in gaming and simulation. You have been warned, we get a bit excited...

Why Williams Esports is about more than just competition | S5 E1322 Nov 202200:50:57

Williams Esports carries the distinction of being Wiliams Racing’s only form of motorsport outside of Formula 1. The team competes in the pinnacle of single-seaters and racing esports. That’s it.

It shows just how intrinsically important virtual racing is to the Grove company, originally founded by Frank Williams in 1977.

Now under Dorilton Capital stewardship, its esports squad is pushing the limits of what’s achievable in sim racing – both in terms of the sheer quantity of events participated, but also driver training, education and media assistance.

It's these three aspects we wanted to dive deeper into. Yes, the team has found success across platforms such as iRacing, Assetto Corsa Competizione and even Rocket League, but it’s also investigating new ways of nurturing talent that pushes the whole environment forward.

Joining us for this episode of the Traxion.GG Podcast are:

  • Seb Hawkins - Team Manager, Williams Esports
  • Steven English - Director of Esports, Williams Racing
  • Ewan Lury - Esports Press Officer, Williams Esports

Inside Trak Racer's sim racing hardware plans, with CEO Matt Sten | S5 E610 Oct 202200:26:36

Joining us this week is the founder and CEO of Trak Racer, Matt Sten, the global – of Australian origin – sim racing and flight simulator accessory manufacturer.

It has partnerships with the Alpine Formula 1 team and Airbus, and perhaps is best known for creating cockpits and wheel stands for those who want to take their virtual racing that bit further.

We’ve reviewed its TR8 Pro Cockpit and FS3 wheel stand on the Traxion.GG website and YouTube Channel before.

I wanted to gain an insight into the racing video game peripheral market, and how Trak Racer has grown. But, also, what it plans to do next. This is well worth a listen, as Matt gives us the lowdown on its next big move – electronics.

Trak Racer will have software, a load cell pedal set, shifters and handbrakes, so it’s going big on sim racing.

Listen in the player below, or fire up Spotify, Amazon, Google or Apple Podcasts and search for ‘Traxion’.

If you have any topics for us to discuss on upcoming episodes, or questions about F1 Esports, email podcast@traxion.gg.

How the Le Mans Virtual Series is created | S5 E503 Oct 202200:36:17

The Automobile Club de l'Ouest’s 24 Hours Hours of Le Mans will celebrate 100 years since its first running in 2023, but before then it will also honour its third ever 24 Hours of Le Mans Virtual race too.

On the run-up to the big racing esports event – which will see over 40 cars, across two categories, driven by 140 competitors – there is also the Le Mans Virtual Series, organised and run by Motorsport Games and the ACO.

Yes, the same Motorsport Games group that Traxion.GG is part of, albeit editorially independent.

I visited its Northamptonshire esports bunker to go behind the scenes of the opening championship round – the 8 Hours of Bahrain.

Joining us on this episode are several team members, explaining before and during the event, what their roles are and how the team works together to deliver a professional broadcast.

  • Dan Hyde
  • Rich Hutson
  • Nairi Shirvanian
  • Lewis McGlade
  • Oasley Beattie
  • Gérard Neveu

Behind the scenes of Dakar Desert Rally's development | S5 E426 Sep 202200:27:42

Paulo Gomes, Studio and Game Director at Saber Porto is joining us today. It’s developing the upcoming racing game and simulation Dakar Desert Rally, and we had a chat at the Gamescom show recently.

Hopefully, you’ll be able to gather Paulo’s passion and dedication for this project, a brand new officially licenced title for the real-world Dakar rally raid.

Set in an open-world Saudi Arabian environment, it mixes five vehicle categories – truck, car, motorcycle, quad bike and SSV – plus the past three seasons of competitors within Sport, Professional and Simulation modes.

The game launches on 4th October for PC, PlayStation and Xbox and we’ll hopefully have a full review and final verdict soon. For now, though, let’s hear more about its genesis.

If you have any topics for us to discuss on upcoming episodes, or questions about F1 Esports, email podcast@traxion.gg.

How Ford and Next Level Racing are pushing sim racing forward | S5 E320 Sep 202200:16:13
Joining us on this episode are representatives of sim racing equipment manufacturer Next Level Racing and world-renowned car company Ford.

The two companies are working together on a line of Ford GT and Team Fordzilla virtual racing cockpits and seats – but more than that, they are trying to expand the audience for our beloved past-time.

Both were present at Gamescom, a German show that covers the general gaming industry and usually has less of a racing game presence. But not this year, with a big push for the genre.

Not only did we chat about new products, but also the why, where and how of sim racing and what the future may hold.

So, you will hear from first Kam Khadem, Head of Brand and Strategic Growth at Next Level Racing, then followed by Emmanuel Lubrani, Senior Manager of Brand communications and content development at Ford of Europe.

Don’t forget you can email podcast@traxion.gg if you have any questions about sim racing cockpits you’d like us to answer.

How Red Bull Racing Esports plans to reclaim F1 title | S5 E209 Sep 202200:35:30

We have six guests on this week’s episode, as we visited Milton Keyes in the English Midlands, the home industrial estates and dual carriageways, but also the Red Bull Racing Formula 1 team.

At its base also lives the Oracle Red Bull Racing Erena, where the drivers for the upcoming F1 Esports Series Pro Championship have been training ahead of the upcoming season.

In this episode you’ll head from Red Bull Racing drivers Marcel Kiefer, Frede Rasmussen and Liam Parnell, followed by the new-look Scuderia AlphaTauri Esports line-up of Sebastian Job, Joni Törmälä and Josh Idowu.

We’ll go through each driver, so you have insight into professional-level preparation for the world’s biggest racing esports competition.

We start with Marcel Kiefer who returns once again to the Oracle Red Bull Racing Esports team, which finished second last season and is looking to reclaim the team’s title.

Apologies, in some of these interviews there is the sound of some competitive table football in the background, hopefully, you can hear past that, however.

RENNSPORT will shake sim racing establishment, CEO Morris Hebecker | S4 E1102 Jun 202200:23:03

On this episode of the Traxion.GG podcast we are joined by Morris Hebecker, CEO and Co-founder of new sim racing platform RENNSPORT.

In this interview hear confirmation that the latter feature is not an NFT or blockchain-based venture and how you will be able to play an early build of this game sooner rather than later.

Think of it as a brand new driving game that simulates racing, aiming to be the next Assetto Corsa Competizione or RaceRoom Racing Experience. It is unique, however, built by a new studio using proprietary handling models mixed with Unreal Engine 5.

It’s PC-only for now, with a targeted release date before the end of 2023 including ranked online racing and VR support. The platform will also try to deliver a fresh take on racing esports through an ESL partnership, while simultaneously offering some form of mod marketplace, allowing content creators to earn revenue.
