134. The One Ugrade that Transformed My Therapy Business Overnight with Lindsay Haverslew08 Sep 202400:28:40

You know that feeling when you stumble across a hidden gem during your travels? That burst of excitement because you've found something truly special? That’s exactly how I felt after my chat with Lindsey Haverslu. Her journey from a traditional therapist to a globetrotting, multi-passionate entrepreneur is nothing short of inspiring.

Picture this: Starting in Thailand during a global pandemic, Lindsey turned her dream into reality against all odds. So many of you email me, saying you want to start your traveling therapist journey now—not stuck in the States, but out there in the world. Lindsey did just that, and it’s a game-changer.

What struck me was her fearless leap, especially when her business wasn’t yet enough to sustain her. She took a calculated risk, leaned into social media, and boom! She built a thriving practice with thousands of followers on Instagram and even brought on associates. Imagine the freedom that kind of success gives you.

Lindsey also created Solaceekers Collective, a supportive space for Betrayed Partners. Her passion, mixed with travel narratives, makes her not just a therapist, but a beacon of hope and transformation for her clients. It’s proof that pursuing your passion can serve others in profound ways.

Whether you’re grappling with the complexities of licensing or craving other income streams for more travel freedom, Lindsey’s story is your roadmap. She’s balancing private practice, a booming social media presence, and, soon enough, hosting a retreat in Guatemala.

The biggest takeaway? Don’t be afraid to showcase your unique lifestyle within your practice. Authenticity draws the right clients to you. Use your travels not just for personal growth but as an extension of the healing work you do with your clients.

Key Points:

  • Lindsay Haverslew transformed her therapy practice by embracing travel and entrepreneurship, starting her journey in Thailand during the pandemic.

  • By leveraging social media, Lindsay grew a thriving therapy business, gaining thousands of followers and expanding her practice with associates.

  • She founded Solaceekers Collective to support Betrayed Partners, blending her therapeutic skills with her passion for travel and community-building.

About Lindsay Haverslew:

I am a Registered Therapeutic Counsellor and Certified Sex Addiction Therapist (from Canada) specializing in betrayal trauma recovery. I launched my private practice as a side gig to my agency job in January 2020. When everything went virtual with the pandemic, I began to see this as an opportunity to travel and work, and in January 2021 I took a leave of absence from my agency job, moved to Thailand for 10 months and have never looked back. I've really been on the move since then and have bounced around from place to place, returning to Thailand several times, as well as to Mexico, Colombia, England, Scotland, Laos and the U.S. I have learned I tend to get itchy feet around the 3 month mark somewhere and need to pack up and move again!

For 3 years I had a challenging time filling my practice through traditional marketing like Psychology Today and a website, so I decided to do some research on marketing on Instagram. Within a few short months I was no longer accepting new clients and within one year I had hired 4 associates onto my team to keep up with requests. We are all 100% virtual and I am thrilled that I can create opportunities for other travelling therapists! I really enjoy using Instagram as a marketing tool as I find it to be an incredible creative outlet, and I absolutely love sharing what I have learned with others who are looking to build their caseloads using IG as well.

She is married and have two daughters, one with developmental disabilities. As a stay-at-home mom during her girls' childhood, she was faced with an abundance of commitments, in terms of helping her special needs daughter, and providing the ongoing support needed for both of her daughters. She know she’s at this particular juncture as an entrepreneur and relationship therapist (a dream come true) due to her family journey as a special needs parent. After taking ample time to navigate the special needs world and tend to her family in ways she could not imagine, and reentering the workforce as a Y coach at the YMCA, she was led back to her passion as a relationship therapist and expanded upon this dream by becoming an entrepreneur. Eleni’s travel includes visiting family in a different state where she can continue working, which has added such rich elements to her career. She truly feel blessed to be at this exact moment of her personal and professional stage of life!

I help my clients learn and master the marketing skills necessary to be able to fill their caseloads with private-pay clients so that they can leave behind the hassle and headache of being in-network with insurance companies, see fewer than 12 clients/week, and achieve time, money, and location freedom.

I do this through teaching my clients how to find and speak to the type of client they’d love to fill their entire caseload with — without having to dance on TikTok or use bro-marketing strategies.

104. The Quebec Conundrum: The Challenge of Getting Licensed In Two Countries with Ally Rosenberg14 Jan 202400:37:25

In this episode of The Traveling Therapist Podcast, Kym interviews Ally Rosenberg, a therapist specializing in women's mental health, who is exploring the possibility of living a traveling therapist lifestyle in Quebec. Ally's interest in this lifestyle stems from her partner's career flexibility and citizenship in Canada. Which allows them to consider living in different locations. She discusses her efforts to navigate the complexities of virtual therapy practice across borders, including understanding the specific licensure requirements in different regions.

Ally has been researching the legalities of cross-border virtual practice and has utilized resources like Person-Centered Tech trainings on this topic. She explains that state licensing boards regulate where the therapist can practice, usually requiring the therapist to be licensed in the state where the client is located. In Quebec, where Ally is considering practicing, the psychological order mandates licensure for outpatient work. She talks about the challenges she faces as she explores the possibility of working with a master's degree in Quebec.

One of the critical considerations for traveling therapists, as Ally notes, is managing high-acuity clients while abroad. She balances her work between community services and private clients to mitigate risks and gain experience. Ally also emphasizes the importance of having liability insurance coverage for cross-border practice, advising direct contact with insurers to understand international coverage specifics.

As for her future plans, Ally remains open to new connections and sharing insights about the process of practicing in Quebec. Her decision between France and Quebec will depend on her partner's job situation, which is expected to be finalized in June. She encourages listeners to reach out to her to discuss these topics further.

Key Points:

  • Navigating Virtual Practice Across Borders: Ally is researching the legal requirements for virtual therapy practice in different states and countries, focusing on understanding the regulations for therapists practicing outside their licensed state.

  • Quebec Licensure and Challenges: In Quebec, licensure is required for outpatient work. Ally is exploring options for equivalency applications and considering the French language requirements, which pose a challenge for her due to ADHD.

  • Managing Risks and Gaining Experience: Ally balances her work between community services and private clients to mitigate risks while practicing abroad. She also discusses the importance of liability insurance for cross-border practice and the need for thorough research.

About Ally Rosenberg

Ally is a therapist new to private practice and interested in experiencing an amazing career as a therapist while needing to move around for my partner's academic/research career. In her practice, she enjoy empowering women through life's challenges and finding a sense of liberation in their every day life. Ally use an integrative approach to treat ADHD, anxiety, depression and other mental health challenges. And she is trained in DBT, CBT, MI, and ACT.

She is someone who really enjoys a wide array of skill sets throughout her week. So wherever she end up, she like to take on per diem work in emergency rooms, and run DBT skills groups at higher levels of care.

This transformative two-month journey involved a blend of ancient Ayurvedic treatments, spiritual practices, and continued remote therapy work, which led to significant personal restoration and wellness.

Christina's story is not just about professional evolution; it's also a testament to the power of integrating holistic health practices and travel into one's lifestyle. Despite the challenges, she found a way to balance her work commitments with her health needs, even while navigating the intense Panchakarma program. As she looks forward to future plans, including moving to Greece and continuing her work in therapy and gluten-free travel writing, Christina's story is an inspiring example for therapists and individuals looking to balance their professional ambitions with personal health and wellness goals.

93. Telehealth Travels: Licensed in 5 States, Working From Anywhere with David Smith29 Oct 202300:30:08

This episode discusses practicing telehealth across multiple U.S. states. David built his practice to be mobile, working remotely from anywhere, as long as he follows local laws. The COVID pandemic opened up possibilities for how therapists can live and practice post-COVID. He left his clinic job when required to return to full-time in-person work and started his own private practice which is booming!

Amazingly, (to me anyway) The Traveling Therapist Podcast was an inspiration for designing his mobile therapy practice. David plans to work from Tulum, Mexico over New Year's to gain experience practicing telehealth abroad.

About David Smith:

David Smith is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and psychotherapist. He is also a Certified Autism Spectrum Disorder Clinical Specialist, Certified Clinical Trauma Professional, and Certified Family Trauma Professional. He specialize in working with people and families who have experienced trauma, abuse, divorce, neurodiversity, and other complex life challenges.

Much of his professional experience has been as a school-based therapist in elementary schools.

David is passionate about spending time in nature, especially sailing, scuba diving, and outdoor photography. He traveled to 47 of the 50 US states and 17 other countries on 4 continents. These days he spend a lot of time in Mexico and other parts of Latin America with his wife, who is also a psychotherapist, born and licensed in Peru. Both of them serve clients purely via telehealth, which makes travel much more feasible.

He love to write and have several books in progress – a guide for parents and teachers of children with trauma, another to help healers and caregivers deal with burnout, and just for fun, a historical novel set in 8th-century Constantinople. He is constantly learning and am usually in the middle of some new training program on an aspect of therapy and healing that I find interesting.

92. Combining Therapy Passions, Tech, and Alternative Income Streams with Mor Goldberger22 Oct 202300:39:56

In this episode, Mor shares her journey from being a traditional therapist to becoming a traveling therapist, combining her passion for travel and her love for therapy. Mor started traveling internationally alone at a young age and developed a strong desire to see different countries. Originally, her background was in tech, which made it challenging to transition to therapy. Eventually, she pursued her passion and became a therapist, specializing in couples work and Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT).

Mor discusses how she incorporated her tech background into her therapy career. She currently work for a tech company called Mentaya, where she serves as the head of provider experience and growth. The company offers solutions for therapists who prefer not to handle insurance directly. Therapists can refer their clients to Mentaya, which handles insurance claims, eligibility checks, and streamlines the process for therapists, allowing them to focus on therapy while ensuring accessibility for clients.

The episode highlights the importance of following one's passion and finding creative ways to incorporate therapy into different income streams. It also emphasizes the significance of understanding out-of-network benefits and considering alternative options for reimbursement, especially when working with insurance companies that may not be ideal.

Keypoints:

  1. Pursue your passions: Follow your interests and find ways to incorporate them into your career, even if it requires a shift in direction.

  2. Explore alternative income streams: Look for creative ways to generate income as a therapist, such as leveraging technology or offering additional services beyond one-on-one client sessions.

  3. Understand insurance options: Gain a working understanding of out-of-network benefits and consider utilizing platforms to help streamline insurance processes, reduce logistical strain, and maintain financial sustainability.

About Mor Goldberger:

Mor Goldberger has an MFT from the Wright Institute and an MBA from Berkeley Haas. By day Mor leads Therapist Experience and Growth for Mentaya and by night she works as a couples therapist. Mor is passionate about helping therapists grow their private pay practice and create more time for themselves.

91. Mind-Blowing Therapy: Innovative Clinician Combines Travel with Psychedelics | featuring Michal Cohen15 Oct 202300:43:11

This week's episode features Michal Cohen, a psychedelic therapist who helps clients through therapeutic cannabis ceremonies and ketamine therapy. Michal explains how she got into this unique work through trainings in alternative modalities like ganja yoga. She sees immense value in psychedelics for mental health based on her own healing journey.

As a traveling therapist, Mihael has figured out how to guide clients before and after ketamine experiences even when she's abroad long-term. She shares tips for therapist-travelers like vetting accommodations for strong WiFi, researching destinations thoroughly, and staying flexible when plans change. Mihael aims to model a sense of adventure in navigating the inevitability of travel mishaps. She provides an inspiring example of how therapists can blend travel and online work successfully.

Michal grew up in a family that loved to travel! These early travel experiences shaped her to decide to pursue college in CA, even though she grew up in NJ. During college, she traveled to Aix-en-Provence for a semester abroad. Her experience as a student in France was so rewarding, she moved to Italy after graduating and lived there for a year teaching English. She then joined the Peace Corps and went on to serve as a Peace Corps Volunteer in both Madagascar and St. Lucia. It was her experience as a Peace Corps Volunteer that led her to pursue a Master's Degree in Social Work at Columbia University. 12 years ago, Michal decided to make her home in Honolulu, Hawaii, where she offers online therapy and in-person psychedelic cannabis journeys.

Michal loves working as an online therapist because it has allowed her to resume travel as a way of life. This past year, she spent 5 weeks in Mexico and she is returning there for another month in October.

Her favorite travel quote is from the movie The Sheltering Sky: "We're not tourists. We're travelers... Oh. What's the difference?... A tourist is someone who thinks about going home the moment they arrive, Whereas a traveler might not come back at all.

https://michalcohen.squarespace.com/ https://www.instagram.com/the_take_a_trip_therapist/

Episode Key Points:

  • Michal models flexibility when travel plans change, approaching mishaps with a sense of adventure rather than frustration.

  • Michal entered psychedelic therapy through trainings in alternative modalities seeing immense value from her own mental health journey.

  • As a traveling therapist, Michal meets ketamine clients remotely before and after clinic experiences or guides at-home oral ketamine journeys.

84. Breaking Screen Addiction: Strategies for Mindful Tech Use as A Traveling Therapist with Jake Ernst20 Aug 202300:43:22

On this episode of The Traveling Therapist podcast,  I interview Jake Ernst, a therapist specializing in the impact of technology on well-being, who discusses the concerning effects of screen addiction and strategies to break the dopamine addiction associated with excessive device usage. Jake and I explore the addictive nature of social media and how it affects the brain, leading to an increase in anxiety, decreased attention span, and reduced sleep quality.

Jake emphasizes the need to replace shame with compassion when addressing screen dependency, as these apps are intentionally designed to be addictive. He offers practical tips, such as using grayscale mode on smartphones to reduce the attractiveness of apps and implementing dopamine detoxes to reset the relationship with screens.

Throughout our discussion, Jake stresses the importance of self-awareness and setting boundaries to avoid passive and antisocial screen usage. He encourages users to consider active and prosocial interactions online, like engaging with others and sharing meaningful content. Jake advocates for tech-free days to restore balance and be more present in real-life experiences. The key takeaway is to approach screen usage with compassion and recognize that breaking the dopamine addiction requires understanding the addictive design of technology and implementing mindful practices to promote healthier digital habits. We related this to the traveling therapist lifestyle and how to break away from technology especially when we are exploring the world as traveling therapists.

Key points:

  • Strategies for breaking screen addiction and living a more mindful life.

  • Understanding the addictive nature of technology and its impact on our brains.

  • How to implement tech-free days and create a healthier relationship with screens.

81. Embracing Change: A Traveling Therapist's Journey to Self-Trust and Personal Growth with Intuitive Life Purpose Coach Nicole Holst30 Jul 202300:43:22
In this episode, I had an amazing conversation with my guest, Nicole Holst, who shared her thoughts on personal growth, self-trust, and the unique challenges faced by aspiring traveling therapists or anyone attempting to achieve a new lifestyle. Nicole stressed the importance of trusting oneself and expressed the joy she feels when she is able to assist others in making life-changing decisions. We discussed the many emails I receive from aspiring traveling therapists who feel stuck and yearn for the lifestyle that, I, and other nomadic therapists are living. Nicole acknowledged the obstacles that traveling therapists and entrepreneurs in general face, but she encourages us to heed our inner calling and overcome the obstacles.  Nicole also emphasized the importance of positive thinking and the law of attraction, stating that what one focuses on becomes their reality. She mentioned the concept of quantum entanglement, suggesting that when energies match, they are drawn together, which is why certain people find their way to her content and Traveling Therapists serendipitously find this podcast. Nicole believes that those who desire a nomadic lifestyle are drawn to it for a reason and encourages you to follow your instincts. She acknowledges that the initial stages of such a lifestyle change can be challenging, but she assured my listeners that the eventual expansion of their life experience makes the effort worthwhile. This conversation was a great reminder of the power of positive thinking and the potential we all have to shape our own realities. Key points:
  • Trust in Self and Embracing Change: Nicole emphasized the importance of trusting oneself when making life-changing decisions.

  • Positive Thinking and Law of Attraction: Nicole suggested that what one focuses on becomes their reality and that by focusing on possibilities rather than obstacles, individuals can open up new opportunities for themselves.

  • The Value of a Nomadic Lifestyle: Nicole expressed her belief that those with a desire for a nomadic lifestyle are drawn to it for a reason.
