How the Holocene Framework Works, a case study07 Jun 202200:22:56

Today, I’m revisiting one of my favorite episodes of The Travelers, #183, an interview with Jonathan and Quinn Button from Life out of the Box, a company that takes the Tom’s shoes model — but instead of shoes, it’s local artiisanal crafts, such as bracelets and apparel, handmade by locals — and for each sale, a portion of the proceeds goes towards providing supplies to teachers in that very same local area. And I love this, not only because education is the most important cause, in my opinion, and so their mission is very close to my heart, but also that they literally followed Holocene’s 8-stage process to transform themselves from aspiring entrepreneurs to successful, world travelers and thought leaders in their field. They’ve found success and fulfillment in who they transformed themselves into using Curiosity and Creativity to find transformation. This is Holocene. So I’m really excited to delve back into this case study from episode 183, so you can see how this transformative experience framework works.

131: The Many Lives Travel Affords Us with Matt Gibson05 Nov 201400:36:53

On this episode, I’m sitting down with a Canadian outdoors adventurer, explorer of remote places, online entrepreneur and consultant, writer and photographer, snowboarding enthusiast, and digital jack of all trades -- whose skills have, I discover, led him to live different lives in multiple places he calls home.
Matt Gibson lived and taught english in Taiwan for 6 years, where he learned to speak Mandarin and founded his own travel magazine. His website has been featured on Afar, the Atlantic, TSN and more, and he's interviewed a lot of people on this show to get insights from their experiences in travel.
Today we explore the unique path he's taken by pursuing a love of travel that's guided his decisions and professional skills. Matt demonstrates how it's okay to not go after that one thing, and instead explore a world and the many opportunities for experience - in work and life - that are out there to be found along the way.

What we cover:

How Matt found an opportunity to teach English in Taiwan.
Why teaching English is a wonderful way to learn a culture while earning money.
Why Matt started his own magazine before eventually selling it to write for other publications, and how he found opportunities to do so.
Where he found the inspiration to earn a living as a professional travel blogger.
The many things a jack-of-all-trades like Matt can do now to earn a living in a variety of ways that allows him the freedom to travel when he wants.
How Matt approaches the travel industry with his skills.
His experience at Angkor Wat, his favorite ski mountains, and what it is about Taiwan that he loves.
Matt's travel style, and why he doesn't like to research the places he visits.
Getting trapped in a monsoon while riding a motorbike and seeing pigmy elephants.

130: Creating Location Independence as a Writer with Gigi Griffis04 Nov 201400:37:28

How do you feel when I say, “Staying in your current job?”

How do you feel when I say, “Taking a new job?”

How do you feel when I say, “Starting your own business?”

This last option was the one that this episode's guest knew she had to pursue, and one she eventually discovered she could do from a life of full-time travel. She also knew that she needed to see the world.
Gigi Griffis has been to over 30 countries across 6 continents and living and working on the road for the past 2 years, running her business from inspiring locations with her dog, Luna. Without letting the belief that you need to be rich or famous, she gave herself permission to live her dreams. Traveling. Writing. Running a business and challenging herself regularly.

What we cover:

How Gigi got started as a writer by sneaking her way into the role through her job at the time.
How she came to the realize was able to step out to try full time travel and supported herself.
Where Gigi found her first clients by asking friends and attending conferences as a copywriter.
How Gigi made her own luck by asking for what she wanted.
The one question Gigi answers in order to write a successful pitch as a travel writer.
"Life isn't pass/fail... At any time I can quit, go backward, get another client, find a job for 6 months. I can do other things. I don't need to commit to this. And that gives me the confidence to move forward... because this is the life I want for myself."
Why Gigi feels compelled to help others find their own location independence.

129: Live Life with a Sense of Urgency with Mandy France03 Nov 201400:38:30

"I don't buy a lot of things. I buy pins on the map."

Mandy France is the founder and contributing editor of The Responsible Traveler. She is a freelance travel writer and editor, a published children’s author and an illustrator.
She is an ethical adventurer at heart. From trekking the Inca Trail in Peru to climbing the highest mountain in Africa, she’s made adventure a priority in life. She’s also a vegan which gives her further insight into what ethical travel is and how to be compassionate in the things you do abroad.
In this episode we get into how the passing of her mother sparked a curiosity and burning desire to stop playing life safely and instead experience as much as the world has to offer. We also explore specifically how Mandy now lives her lives and the takeaways you can apply to make the decision to travel more.

What we cover:

How the passing of her mother sparked Mandy's decision to leave a career at Disney to see the world, something she previously wasn't curious to do.
Her first trip, a 4-day trek from Cusco to Macchu Picchu, was the first time she'd ever done anything like it.
We break down how Mandy is able to create a sense of urgency in her life.
What is responsible, ethical tourism or travel, and how to make responsible considerations in your trips (for example, don't ride elephants in Thailand - we get into why that's unethical).
How responsible travel provides an opportunity for you to take a story home that you can be proud to share.
Travel as a vegan: Her biggest challenges.

3 Steps to Create a Sense of Urgency in Your Life:

Have a clock. Create a countdown and a finite window of time to plan that next experience.
Embrace the reminders of your own mortality.
Identify the legacy you want to leave behind.

She’s a writer, editor, and content creator for hire - as well as a lover of good food, books and good hearts — spoken like a true explorer. You can find her work on her website, Part Time Traveler, where she champions the idea that “You don’t have to give up the life you’re already living to see the world.”
Let’s find out how.

127: Money Saving on Autopilot with Listen Money Matters31 Oct 201400:44:03

Saving money is tricky.

There are people listening who want to know how to save more at home, spend less on the road, or save more on the road so they can perpetuate their travels.

So often, we ask travelers about travel saving strategies — and while I think the more well-traveled are particularly good at saving money on the road, saving money at home is equally - if not more important. And when I want to know more about money, then I want to spend time talking to the people who spend all of their time thinking about money, and not travel.

Today I get to sit down with two financially-minded gentlemen — Andrew Fiebert and Matt Giovanisci from the award winning, fun, at times hilarious blog and daily podcast, Listen Money Matters, to have a casual, upbeat conversation about money saving strategies.

What We Cover:

Craft beer, and products, as a great way to explore a particular location.
3 tools to create automated systems to save money for (and on!) your travels.
A system for saving money if you don't have steady income.
A simple way to break up your income: Andrew says your rent should never be more than 1/3 of your take home, and 1/3 of your money should be a saving. That leaves 1/3 for day to day expenses, and you can determine how much of that you want to save for your travels.

126: Life on a Sailboat with Rebecca Burg30 Oct 201400:34:02

Rebecca Burg is the author of the book Sail With Me, which chronicles her experienced as a home-owning, career-focused lady who gave up the security for an uncommon lifestyle — living aboard a small boat, earning a living with low-paying odd jobs instead of that steady career she once had. She wrote this book on her solar powered laptop while anchored at sea.
I’m excited to get into what inspired this decision, and her story — as well as where this unconventional life has taken her, and the stories she’s found along the way.

125: Following the Hunter S. Thompson Trail in South America with Brian Kevin29 Oct 201400:45:59

Today's guest is the author of The Footloose American (get it on Amazon), a travelogue following the footsteps of famed-writer Hunter S. Thompson across South America. This was a journey I wasn't aware he'd ever taken that Brian recreated, studied, pulled out the stories from and became an expert on. I'm curious about the trip, how that changed him, and what sorts of stories he found along the way.

Brian Kevin has written about travel, adventure, and culture for Travel and Leisure, Outside magazine, Sierra, Men's Journal and currently lives in Maine where he calls in from. In this episode, we dive right into his adventure and how a book comes out of a trip like that, as well as the transformative power travel can have on you, if you let it.

And be sure to stay tuned for the lightning round!

124: Solo Female Travel Fears with Kelly Lewis27 Oct 201400:34:05

Kelly Lewis is an avid traveler with a love of writing. She’s also the founder of Go Girl Guides, a series of travel guides written by women specifically for women.
And by the way, if you’re a guy, then give it a listen because Kelly’s got travel advice for all of us. I learned a lot about solo female travel through this conversation, a subject that I think is important for everyone to understand how to approach as something more nuanced than just an issue of fear.
So, after growing up in Hawaii, Kelly spent time in New Zealand, the South Pacific, and South America — and has since been to 6 of the 7 continents, writing about her travels on her blog, TravelBugJuice.com
Kelly and I ran into each other in Mexico and i’m excited to bring to the show what is that she’s doing — which is encouraging and empowering women to experience the whole wide world.

What We Cover:

Why Kelly chose Thailand as her first independent destination.
How the idea for the guides actually came to Kelly in a dream.
Her most challenging personal experiences in South America as a solo-female traveler.
How to trust within boundaries. The world is good and people are good and will help you. But Kelly still covers the real fears and concerns so you're prepared to negotiate your travels on your own. Good advice for anyone.
What you can expect to find in Go Girl Guides.

122: Dancing Around the World with Mickela Mallozzi from Bare Feet23 Oct 201400:42:44

Mickela Mallozzi is a dance instructor turned television host of the travel show called Bare Feet, which has aired on Travel and Escape and NYC Life, a PBS affiliate in New York. Starting in the Fall of 2015, Bare Feet will be nationally distributed on PBS in the US and Canada.
Each episode, she travels to a new place and embeds herself into the people there through the traditions of dance. Occasionally, I speak with painters and photographers on this show, but I’ve never discussed dance — which, like food, is easily one of the most elemental and original expressions running through the blood of any culture.
Through the lens of both the camera and dance, Mickela has explored Buenos Aires, Uzbekistan, Puerto Rico, Curacao, Italy, Germany, Ireland, all 50 states, and her home, New York City - and more places.
She’s also the organizer of the Women’s Travel Fest, which is held annually around the end of February, this year in San Francisco.

220: CHANGE with Kirsten Alana13 May 201600:41:12
“I think you can choose to be happy, and choose to explore, and choose to be fulfilled by life or you can choose to sit back and let life overwhelm you and be unhappy. But for me, the easiest happy life has been through travel because it’s continually evolving and changing and I’m continually discovering new things. And I just found very quickly that that suits me very well.”

Kirsten Alana is a former nomad turned New York based travel photographer, entrepreneur, consultant, writer, blogger and digital influencer and the creative mind behind Aviators and a Camera, where she posts about her adventures, luxury travel assignments, creative pursuits and life in general.

The compelling thing about Kirsten is not just the many hats she wears, or that what she does is unusual but how she does it so well, and with such a thoughtful style. At the very least, you should check out her work on Instagram. She is exactly the sort of person brands want to work with because she makes them look good, and smart.

This episode is ideal for anyone looking for change, a pathway to transformation in work and life, and who is considering traveling but letting something in a structured life hold them back from pursuing who they're meant to become.

121: Shivya Nath’s Life of Travel22 Oct 201400:42:52

“Instead of wondering when your next vacation is, maybe you ought to set up a life you don’t need to escape from.”

Today we’re talking to Shivya Nath, who at the age of 23 quit her job in the tourism industry to build for herself a life of travel as a social media consultant and entrepreneur.
She’s a travel blogger at The Shooting Star, as well as the co-founder of India Untraveled, a company on a quest to help travelers gain greater visibility and exposure to the lesser known parts of India, and encouraging others to make travel not just a break from life, but life itself.
At the heart of things, Shivya’s just a girl who loves to travel and I’m excited to let her take us through her life and explore India.

Today's guest got started traveling around the US as a young kid - visiting all the National Parks in a Volkswagen Van, right out of a postcard.
Jesse Krieger has spent living as a musician in Vienna, touring Europe from there, and musicianship -= along with a strong desire to maintain a life of travel - led him to entrepreneurship, And that is as far as my intro can go because his story winds down a twisting path of careers, from the unexpected to the bizarre.
However, Jesse helps others build careers that support the lifestyle they envision for themselves - which includes a life of travel.

What we cover:

How Jesse found himself on the road, alone, by choosing to stay on the road at the end of a trip with his friends.
After dreaming of seeing it for his life, what it felt like for Jesse to see his name in lights at one of the biggest rock clubs in Los Angeles.

119: Do Things That Scare You with Matt Karsten20 Oct 201400:36:31

Matthew Karsten has been an Expert Vagabond for the past four years, and if you want to know what that means, then you’re in the right place because we are going to get to that.
Matthew champions the belief that travel doesn’t have to be expensive, getting out of your comfort zone is healthy, and the world is a safe place — and so adventure is both attainable and good for you, no matter how old you are.
In 2010, despite the bewilderment of his family, Matthew quit his job, sold it all and bought a ticket to Guatemala where he found clarity in his life, in following his dreams, for the first time. Today he supports his experiences through travel blogging — and so often I hear it’s not a sustainable model for supporting your travels, and I’m curious to hear how Matthew does it and where it’s taken him, including skydiving in Fiji, camping on an erupting volcano, hitchhiking across the States, shark diving without a cage, and seducing an ostrich, in his new life of travel.

What we cover:

How hard it was for Matt to leave his life, job, and girlfriend back home to seek more adventure in foreign places in 2010.
Matt’s riskiest adventures, including hiking an erupting volcano and visiting a village controlled by a Mexican drug cartel.
How travel has helped Matt live his dream of finding more adventure in his life.
How Matt makes an income from his travel blogging and you can too.
Matt's best travel advice.

118: Runaway with Juno Kim17 Oct 201400:36:42

Juno Kim is the founder or Runaway Media, a career breaker, having escaped the confines of her cubicle and embracing the realistic life of full time travel.
She covers her work at her blog, Runaway Juno, where she writes on her experiences and why she did what she did. She and I both believe in travel as a healing method of sorts — travel as therapy, even if you don’t believe you need it. It simply is, to us, "the best tool to make life better" — and those are her words.
On this episode we get into her life, what she's up to, and the things she's doing to empower Asian women to see the complexities of the world.

What we cover:

How Juno discovered a love for travel and found her path as a travel blogger
Juno's transformative experience with a person she met and the ways in which that person helped her experience the world, in New Zealand speaking
Her career break experience road-tripping in the United States.
How she's making a new career from her travels.

117: How Trippy was Born from a Love of Travel with Founder J.R. Johnson16 Oct 201400:31:50

JR Johnson is the CEO and founder of Trippy, a really fantastic Q&A website for anyone who has travel questions and wants answers from real people, or feels compelled to share their own travel stories and information.
Formerly, JR founded Virtual Tourist, which became one of the largest travel communities in the world — and he's also started other companies which have since been acquired by Expedia.
Having grown up in Southern California, I’m curious where in his life and why travel has played such a prominent role for JR and how it has led him to launch my favorite of his endeavors to date Trippy.

What we cover:

How JR got into the travel game with Virtual Tourists in 1999 through a burning desire to create great content about travel.
How listening to the advice of a stranger led JR to uncover a simple, life-changing travel experience that would go on to inspire the course of his career in tech.
JR’s fondest travel memory (Read it on Trippy) that he never experienced had he not ventured into the unknown on a whim.
And a lot more the value and effects of exploration.

116: Six-Figure Travel Blogging Tips from Gary Arndt – Part 215 Oct 201400:26:52

In yesterday's session, Everything Everywhere's Gary Arndt shared with us how he went from software entrepreneur to world traveler, earning six-figures from his blog and traveling to over 160 countries in 7 years. If you want to create for yourself a life of travel, there are few people more accomplished than Gary in travel blogging entrepreneurship. Have a listen to part 1, if you haven't already or sit back and enjoy part 2 of my conversation with Gary Arndt.
Today’s guest is known as one of the most prolific and trafficked travel bloggers in the world.
Gary Arndt has been traveling around the world nonstop since 2007, across all 7 continents and over 160 different countries and territories, and writing and photographing his experiences on one of the biggest travel blogs out there, Everything Everywhere. He also podcasts at This Week in Travel with our mutual friend and podcasting legend, Chris Christensen.
Because Gary got started at the right time, lived his message of travel, and delivered quality content across the board, he's become one of a few bloggers who makes six figures from his travel blog, which alone seems to captivate a lot of people, particularly those attempting to follow in his footsteps.
As a result, I’ve had the pleasure of running into Gary a couple times and always enjoy my interactions with a person so widely knowledgeable about the world and travel industry. But I’m excited today to get to know Gary the person, where he’s from, and where he’s going.

What we cover:

Why now is a great time to go to Egypt, because of the perceived fear about the destination.
Where Gary would not go right now.
Gary's travel goals with over 160 countries behind him.
How he came to the decision to persist travel blogging despite nobody paying attention at a time when nobody else was travel blogging as a business.
Gary's indispensable travel blogging advice.
How travel blogging is exactly like pornography. Why are people buying travel magazines that discuss 30-40 countries in every issue when that's more countries than most people visit in one lifetime?
And more!

111: Loving Iceland with Auður from I Heart Reykjavik08 Oct 201400:30:28

Iceland, to me, is this lunar-like landscape with fjords, geysers, hot springs and mountains. I'm hoping today's guest can take us there and explain her love for Iceland, shine a light on a few lesser known areas, and inspire you to look at Iceland for your next trip.

110: A New Place Every 91 Days with Mike and Juergen07 Oct 201400:40:43

Juergen and Mike are self-proclaimed born-wanderers and life-long learners of new cultures, on the road to explore as much of the world as they can. How they're going about doing this is smart, and a route that I would recommend anyone who writes or blogs about their travels considers as a model for earning money on the road.

Every 3 months, Juergen and mike travel to a new destination, immerse themselves in the culture, and write about their experience at For 91 Days. When they're done, they compile all of their articles and information into a book, which they sell as a part of their series of travel guides called For 91 Days: Sri Lanka, or For 91 Days: Busan, For 91 Days: Oviedo, and so on. And we'll explore why 3 months, how the idea is working, where it all started, and where they're headed next.

109: Stocktrading To Fund Your Travel Life with Marcello Arrambidé06 Oct 201400:34:31

"I don't think sitting in a car for an hour, just to get yelled at by same guy... Just to do something that you don't enjoy. To have all that stress for no reason only to get back in the car, to go back home to try to alleviate the stress for the day? I just don't think that's what life should be about."

Today’s guest has been to around 80 countries in in the past 5 years, having visited all 7 contintents and living in 12 different countries in 5 different continents. That’s awesome to be able to say, and I know he doesn’t take that for granted, which is exactly why he’s here today.
When Marcello Arrambidé was 25, he needed to break away from dull nagging ache of routine and took an unusual direction, one that’s led him to a life of travel centered around a single skill that he’s cultivated over the years.
That skill is day-trading on the stock market and helping others do the same through his website — The Wandering Trader.

What We Cover

How Marcello was determined to make travel a bigger part of his lifestyle.
The one reason day trading on the stock market appealed more than entrepreneurship to Marcello as a way to find freedom of location.
How Marcello lost $25,000 in student loans that he used to trade with and why he took out more loans.
Marcello's views on what matters the most in life.
What is day trading? And why Marcello gravitated towards and now recommends day trading to fund a life of travel and freedom.
The biggest challenges of day-trading, and how Marcello overcame them.
How Marcello balances the emotional toll of regular losses, and how he manages the markets successfully.
Traveling and day trading have both helped Marcello develop patience and similar lessons in life.
The lives Marcello has changed by teaching others to day trade.

108: 5 Steps to Save Confidently for a Travel Life with Paula Pant03 Oct 201400:40:51

"As a little kid, I shuttled back forth between Ohio and Kathmandu, Nepal. Which I realize might make me sound worldly, except for the fact that my worldview was so limited that I thought the whole world was no bigger than Ohio and Nepal."

In 2008, today’s guest quit her job and sold it all to backpack across the Middle east, Asia and Europe for two years. This set in motion the desire for a lifestyle that incorporated travel as a regular part of the no longer boring routine.
In this episode, we explore in depth how Paula could afford to this, continues to travel today and how you can do the same.
Paula Pant is the mind behind Afford Anything where she helps others master their money, buy back your life, ditch the cubicle and embark on an epic adventure. I had the fortune of meeting Paula in Las Vegas back in January, and thought her enthusiasm for what she believes, and how she lives her message, to be infectious.
I’m excited to riff with her about her location independence, why she does what she does, and her advice for you — if what you want is to set your sights on freedom, travel and adventure.
But what I like most about Paula is that she has a realistic, and intelligent approach towards reconfiguring your personal finances with the intention of building freedom.

What We Cover

Paula spent her years shuttling between Ohio and Nepal, which surprisingly did not give her a love of travel. It wasn't until later that she
How she saved up to quit her job to take a two year trip to the Middle East, Asia and Europe that she knew travel needed to be a bigger part of her life.
Where the idea for her business, Afford Anything, came from.
How you can afford anything, according to Paula, by ruthlessly taking control of your budget and cutting out the things that society says are "normal."
Nobody ever questions spending money on graduate school, weddings, or home buying by saying, "Wow! You must be rich!" But when you travel extensively, people openly question it.
Paula's strategy on saving for a travel life, including her real estate investments which pay her $40,000 per year net passive income.
What are index funds and how can they give you a passive source of cash flow?

How to Save Confidently for a Travel Life

Rather than spend money and stash what's left over at the end of the month, pick what percentage of your income you'd like to save. Paula recommends 20-50%. "Skim it off the top, and then spend the rest." Automate this process.
Focus on paying off your high interest debt first (7-8% interest or higher). Even if you have credit card debt, pay that off before you cure your wanderlust.
Focus on building an emergency fund. If you're paying off credit card debt, then have $500-1000 in reserve. If you don't have debt, then keep about 3-6 months of your expenses in reserve.
Invest at least 10% of your income towards retirement. Think of it like a worst case scenario fund for when you're old. Start this as early as you can.
Buy investments that give you a stream of passive income, such as real estate and broad market index funds that specialize in high dividend payouts.

107: Photography and Space Tourism with Eric James02 Oct 201400:30:29

Today's guest is an innovator, creative artist, aviator, “working on world changing innovations and connecting with people all over the world.”
Eric James is an avid traveler and he’s flown a fighter jet, which is pretty cool. He’s also tentatively set to be one of the first photographers to be on Virgin Galactic’s early space flights. I’ve been itching to get some one to come on and discuss space tourism.
I’m looking forward to learning more about Eric’s background, his fear of flight, how he got a spot on that voyage, his vision for the project and what his expectations are for being a part of a new kind of tourism: Space tourism.

What We Cover:

How photography inspires Eric to seek out his most memorable travel moments.
How Eric developed a love of travel
How entrepreneurship and travel

106: “Where Are Your Borders?” with Ginger Kern – Part 201 Oct 201400:27:36

This is part 2 of my conversation with Ginger Kern. Listen to part 1.
Today we’re exploring what I mean when I talk about becoming an Explorer, or taking the mindset of an explorer into everything you do.
Ginger Kern has spent the last 4 years traveling the world and observing the effects of travel on happiness, or how travel can make us feel more at peace with ourselves.
She manages the summits put on by The Higher Purpose Project and recently co-founded the MBADventures Pilot Experience - which involves escaping with likeminded people on life-changing adventures. More recently, she's begun speaking on what she calls The Traveler’s Mindset, which is both a way of life and a digital platform she’s launching. I’m so excited to get into what she means by this, and why it matters, and how it relates to imagination, adventure and all of the prevailing themes of this podcast.

What We Cover:

Being stuck in the dull nagging ache of routine is a choice. Getting unstuck is a choice.

How connecting with the humanity in everyone is a skillset you can develop, and one that helps you combat that feeling of being stuck, isolation, or boring routine.

How traveling can help you develop an appreciation for loneliness.

Ginger would love for The Traveler's Mindset, and what a more well-traveled society looks like.
How travel actually is an addiction.

What We Cover:

How a simple travel experience, on her own, in Italy gave Ginger a greater feeling of freedom, an addiction for travel, and the motivation to setup a life in Europe.

Adventure is within you. The adventure comes from you first. Don't wait for your life to be adventurous.

How looking at fantasy and then playing with reality can spark the desire for adventure.

104: Get Inspired to Explore with Passion Passport’s Zach Glassman29 Sep 201400:38:06

"That idea that there are walls around me never existed... There's a humanity that unites us all." - Zach Glassman

Two years ago, Zach Glassman left his job in corporate finance to make travel a bigger priority in his life, and the experience he had was transformative.
Rather than ever come back to play the role of the person he was before he left, just last year he founded Passion Passport, a community of storytellers, photographers, and explorers — coming together around a mutual passion for travel.
Zach grew up following his father in Central America after his parents met in Guatemala, and so ongoing travel has been a normality in his life for as far back as it goes.
Nowadays, the community he’s fostering is in line with you, and the listeners of this show, and I’m excited to sort of unite the tribes around a shared love of meaningful experience and exposure to the complexities of the world.

What We Cover:

How being born into a family that's open to new experiences helped shape Zach's principles about travel and founding Passion Passport.
Zach and I dive deep to explore the heart of why travel matters and our shared philosophies around the value of experiencing the complexity of the world.
What is the Bucket List initiative and how is it helping people change their lives through travel?

103: Trek the Annapurna Circuit with Kristin Addis26 Sep 201400:24:45

After growing up in Southern California, Kristin Addis found herself an investment banker who couldn’t ignore the call to adventure. So in 2012, after a year-long recovery from a debilitating shoulder surgery helped her realize she wasn't satisfied with her career, she quit her job, got rid of her stuff, and chose experiences instead, hitting the road independently to explore without guide books and using just her wits.

Today she writes about what she finds at her travel blog, Be My Travel Muse, covering her experiences on the road and helping others to do the same, in her series So You Want to Be a Travel Blogger.

I’m excited to learn more about how someone can make the bold decision to quit a lucrative career for a much more challenging, albeit personally rewarding, lifestyle - and what solo-travel has meant for her. She even took on the Annapurna Circuit without a guide and in this episode, you'll hear she did it and how you can to.

What We Cover:

How shoulder surgery helped Kristin realize her priority was to see the world, not pursue an unfulfilling career.
When she realized she was not going back and that she could create a new career from her blog.
Even though she travels solo, she explains how she's rarely alone.

102: How Kristin Addis Quit Her Job to Travel Solo – Part 125 Sep 201400:24:09

"I'm not going to spend my youth doing something I don't love. It seems really flip-flopped to me that we spend our youth working so that we can go travel when we're older when we might not make it that far in life, or have the ability to carry a bag anymore." - Kristin Addis
After growing up in Southern California, Kristin Addis found herself in the role of an investment banker who couldn’t ignore her own inherent curiosity. In 2012, following a year-long recovery from a debilitating shoulder surgery that helped her realize she wasn't satisfied with her financial career, she quit her job, sold her stuff, and chose travel instead. On her own, she hit the road to explore the unknown with neither a plan nor a guide, just her wits.

Today, she writes about what she's found at her travel blog, Be My Travel Muse, which covers her experiences in a life of travel and offers guidance and advice for others dreaming or striving to follow her unconventional path.

In this session, you'll learn how someone can make the difficult and bold decision to quit a lucrative career for a more challenging lifestyle as well as what successful solo-travel has meant for her. Kristin even took on the Annapurna Circuit without a guide and through our conversation, you'll hear how you can to.

What We Cover:

How shoulder surgery helped Kristin realize her priority was to see the world, not pursue an unfulfilling career.
When she realized she was not going back and that she could create a new career as a travel writer, earning from her blog.
Even though she travels solo, she explains how she's rarely alone.
Where she's headed and why she might slow down.

14 years ago, on January 1st 2002, a book by a first time author was released onto shelves. This book became a runaway hit that, at the very least, changed the perspective of independent travel to a generation hungry for a little more adventure in life.

The book was called Vagabonding. It’s author, Rolf Potts is sitting down with us today — he’s the mind behind two books, the other is called Marco Polo Didn’t Go There, a collection of short stories from a life spent embracing "the ragged edge" of travel. He’s an essayist and writer who’s work you can find in publications like National Geographic Traveler, The New Yorker, The New York Times, Sports Illustrated, Travel Channel, The Atlantic, and so many more. Nowadays, he’s a teacher and enthusiast for world travel, and vagabonding — his own term that describes a certain philosophical ethos around long term travel as a lifestyle, and not simply a flash in the pan experience for people in their 20s. Instead, travel can become a wider experience that a creative person might integrate and alternate between parts of their life. A life that begins the moment you stop making excuses.

This episode is perfect to reboot The Travelers podcast (formerly The Daily Travel Podcast) and an ideal listen for anyone looking to get a stronger understanding of travel's relationship to finding your career, fulfillment, and actualizing your best self.

101: The Beauty of Reckless Abandon with Chris Plough – Part 224 Sep 201400:23:55

Today’s guest is someone I met in Portland while attending World Domination Summit in July 2014. He shared this high energy and enthusiasm story about a motorcycle ride through the frozen Siberian landscape to the Arctic Circle. Everything he had to say about the story and why he was doing it, why he was sitting on that bike in the freezing cold captivated me and so I’m bringing his story to your ears.
His name is Chris Plough. After the death of his parents, Chris began a downward trajectory into aggressive and dangerous behavior that resulted in nearly killing himself in a motorcycle wreck. He was directionless. Then one day he heard a story about these people who would drive beat up vehicles from London to Ulaanbataar, Mongolia. Hungry for a quest, Chris signed up, met new friends and with them drove a beat up ambulance across Europe and Asia. It broke down just before they arrived. But through adventure, Chris found what he was looking for: Direction.
Since then, he's been on the Rickshaw Run and the Ice Run, and despite the risks to his life, he's found renewed purpose and direction by embracing reckless abandon.
After growing up as an army brat traveling around with his family, Chris has launched successful companies, survived sketchy adventures and met incredible people. Today we’re going to get into the sketchy adventures bit, such as driving an ambulance from London to Mongolia on the Mongol Rally, going on the Rickshaw Run, and taking The Ice Run, his ride from Siberia to the Arctic Circle.

What We Cover:

How the loss of his parents led him on a downward trajectory eventually leading him, unexpectedly, towards adventure.
Survival skills and discovery are learnable skills that can be learned in your own backyard.
How adventure and reliance on others (and skydiving!) can help you learn about trust.
How to get into the Mongol Rally, and Chris’ experience doing so.
The distinct change in Russian roads and how they overcame a damaged vehicle in the middle of nowhere, and how handy you need to be to get through the Rally.

100: Inspiration from 100 Travel Experts23 Sep 201400:19:23

I can’t believe this is the 100th episode of The Daily Travel Podcast.
I am so thankful to all of you listening to the show. You are the fuel that powers this show — and I’d like to just be sure you know how thankful I am that you’re out there and that this show is resonating with you.
I’ve heard from so many people who have told me that because they were inspired by this show that they’ve actually booked that trip — their first big or independent adventure overseas, and I can’t tell you how honored and proud that makes me feel, knowing that this podcast can nudge people out the door and change their lives.

I want this show, its message and guests, to inspire you so badly that you book that ticket, or make that change, in your life to make travel a bigger priority.
This is your one chance to recognize that your desire to travel is an opportunity that will pass you by if you just keep putting it off.
For me personally, very few things in life are more important than to see the world. This is the one opportunity I have to discover as much as this world has to be found, and doing so makes me incredibly happy. If you agree, and want to do the same, then come along for the ride because I want to help you create a life of travel, whatever that means to you.
If that means you want to trade your desk for a life of travel, I have plenty of guests discussing how they took the plunge to go out and build their own personal legends.
If that means find a way to just find a life-changing experience on the road, then that’s what I’m after. That’s the style of travel I want you to experience because I know that when you get a taste of that, if you haven’t already — and I know some of you have — that you can’t stop there.
If you’re like me and have an incurable case of wanderlust, then I find listening to the voices from the other side of that chasm between where you are and where you want to be helps me to maintain focus on where my priorities lie in life. It’s easy to get lost in your own world and I find inspiration is therapy.
So, I’ve pulled out a collection of voices from the first 100 interviews that I hope inspire you to make a life of travel into a reality for yourself.
If you want to take that trip, and make travel a bigger priority in your life, you don’t have to take my word for how amazing it can be. Here’s a collection of quotes and voices from the first 100 episodes that I hope inspires you to reach out, dig deeper, or just say yes.

99: Overcoming Loss on the Mongol Rally with Chris Plough22 Sep 201400:36:13

"I often find that some of the hardest moments that hit, and you think there's no way to recover from it... right after that are some of my best stories, best moments, best successes. So ride them through and try to find another way to work it out. I think that's the key to turning those events around." - Chris Plough

98: 3 Steps to Becoming a Travel Blogger with C.C. Chapman – Part 219 Sep 201400:28:11

This is part 2 of my conversation with content expert and world traveler, C.C. Chapman. Check out part one!
C.C. Chapman is a lover of travel and online content, which for those of you who don’t care about that sort of thing, means he loves helping people make the things that you read or listen to, like this show, even better.
He’s a sort of secret travel writer, his blog has a travel category packed with compelling, emotional content, and he also keynoted the Travel Bloggers Exchange (TBEX) conference in 2012. This is the new media travel conference of conferences. But two years is a long time in both travel and digital publishing — for example, back then, Apple didn’t even have a podcasts app.
Today we get inside the mind of an expert to break down how to create compelling content that resonates and tell amazing stories with C.C. Chapman.

3 Steps to Become a Content Creator, Blogger or Podcaster
C.C. recommends breaking down the process getting into travel blogging, or any "content" to better tell amazing stories and find out where these stories fit into the industry.
Step 1: Establish your digital footprint and start creating.
Start creating. Don't let perfectionism stop you from beginning. "Perfectionism is an evil, evil thing," says C.C. "We all have a little of it. Something is better than nothing. If you wait for perfection, you'll never produce anything." Eventually, you will get better and you will find the opportunity to begin to perfect your content. By starting, you will also begin to fully understand where it is that you fit in, and where you can add value, which leads to step 2...
Step 2: Offer that value by putting yourself out there.
Make it very clear that you want to offer this value.
Step 3: Have clear expectations of reality.
Have clear expectations of reality. Don't anticipate thousands out of the gate, that magical press trip, or to be flown first class around the world. You are going to do the work that you're doing for free for a long time. Reach out to the people or companies or tourism boards you want to work with and ask them if they're interested in what your value offer is and learn from their response.

3 Don'ts of Travel Blogging, Podcasting, etc.
1. Don't expect to be flown around the world first class. You will not be a perfect fit for everyone, and that's good. Being told "no" is an opportunity to refine your offering and focus on a niche to eventually find ideal partners.
2. Don't compare yourself to others, and never get jealous. Instead, reach out and use the opportunity to support others successes and make connections with those people by rooting for them.
3. Don't forget to celebrate your small wins!

What We Cover:

How to stand out as a travel writer or content producer
Why audio is such an intimate, personal medium
Being well-traveled, and having travel stories can help you connect with more people, more easily - and having the ability to meet more people can help you travel more deeply.
A 3-step process to launching a travel blog or podcast or video series of value
Where C.C.'s cross country roadtrip is taking him

96: Find and Live Your Legend with Scott Dinsmore17 Sep 201400:39:14

Today’s guest bills himself as an entrepreneur and an explorer, and is definitely a man after my own heart.
As such, Scott Dinsmore is the guy behind Live Your Legend, a revolution of people out to change the world by doing work they love. On there, Scott talks about finding the work that makes you come alive — as well as adventure and exploration of both the world, and the day-to-day. In other words, he’s out to help you solve the problem of feeling stuck in the dull nagging ache of routine.
Back in May, on the cusp of a trip to Greece with his wife and friends, he wrote an article called Train Yourself for Everyday Adventure — and it was exactly in tune with this show, and my own personal beliefs about the effects of travel and their value to the individual and society.
I also want to tap into Scott’s expertise to help anyone listening here, interested in or setting out to build a life of travel — about how to get started or identify that they’re on the right track.

95: An Artist Without Location with Candace Rose Rardon16 Sep 201400:38:57

Candace Rardon is a writer, speaker, sketch artist and illustrator out telling stories about the world through her words and watercolors. You can see these stories on her blog and portfolio The Great Affair. Among other publications, her work has been featured in National Geographic's magazine. As an artist, Candace’s work has opened doors for her to experience the people in the places she’s been, and to take home with her the stories that define who she’s always becoming.
Along with her regular travels, she also lived in India for nearly a full year and I’m excited to get into what that was like, as a traveler and as a woman on her own in a vastly different culture.

What We Cover:

Where Candace draws inspiration from for her art.
Candace's path towards location independence after getting a degree in English.
How Candace found herself on the Rickshaw Run throughout India, and how she fell so in love with the country that she lived there for a year afterwards.
A deep dive into why she sketches and how doing it on the road helps her to learn more not only about the place but also about herself.

94: Chris Guillebeau’s Quest to Visit Every Country15 Sep 201400:23:24

"Travel gave me all the confidence... I guess I didn't have a lot of self-esteem. I grew a lot as a person just by undertaking challenges and being in difficult situations and just by realizing, 'I can probably figure things out.'" - Chris Guillebeau
A single trip to Africa set in motion a course of events that would make an impact on the world. Certainly my world, and the world of many of my friends.
Today’s guest has been to all 193 countries, while championing above all a life of unconventionality, and non-conformity.
Chris Guillebeau is the author of one of the most recommended books on this show, The Art of Nonconformity, as well as the $100 Startup and his forthcoming book, The Happiness of Pursuit. He’s also the mind behind the Art of Nonconformity blog, Unconventional Guides, and The Travel Hacking Cartel — all of which help people pursue a life less ordinary, and far more adventurous than prescribed by society.
I’m thrilled to have a chance to speak with him about his quests, what he’s after, and how travel can either be the quest itself, or a perfect vehicle to help you find your pursuit of happiness.

What We Cover:

How a transformational trip to West Africa set in motion Chris’ unconventional life.
Chris' perspective on how being helpful can guide you towards crafting a similar business model as him.
Chris' original inspiration during graduate school was the thought: "What if I went to every country in the world and wrote about it?" Eventually, through working on his blog, he was able to create a business around it.
How travel shaped Chris' identity and persona in the eyes of others.
The moments leading up to Chris' completion of 193 countries, and why finishing the quest at a big party in Norway still felt anticlimactic.
How travel has influenced Chris Guillebeau as a person and gave him the confidence to become an entrepreneur.

93: Explore Alaska and Antarctica with Adventurer Laurent Dick12 Sep 201400:41:48

This session's guest has been running independent tours for people of all ages through some of the colder regions of the world for over 20 years, including tours of Alaska and sailing trips to Antarctica - both of which really piqued my curiosity.
Laurent Dick grew up in Switzerland and like so many of the Swiss, speaks four languages. And for the past 25 years, he’s lived in Alaska with his wife and son where started his tour company, Wild Alaska Travel.
I’ve always been curious about the 49th State — and what’s waiting up there, so I’m curious to hear from Laurent about why he moved there and what it was about the place that he fell in love with. And then there’s Antarctica, a destination so many people dream to visit — yet seems so inaccessible and extreme.

What We Cover:

Laurent moved to Alaska after accepting an invitation to go mountaineering in British Columbia
How spending two weeks alone in the wild traversing 2000 miles on a river through the Yukon Territory gave Laurent insight on what he wanted out of life, and how you can find the same through solo travel by taking the leap of faith
The cultural and spiritual element of Alaskan native cultures.
How there can often be more of a community in the more remote areas of the world.
Laurent's near death experience after capsizing alone in freezing rapids in Northern Quebec and how that forced him to reevaluate the way he values his time.
What are the Northern Lights and what time of year can you catch them?
The best way to experience Alaska by getting off the beaten path, including witnessing and becoming a part of the Iditarod.
The local foods of Alaska, like moose.
What compelled Laurent to visit Antarctica and how he takes his guests down there.

92: Showing Your Kid the World with Talon Windwalker11 Sep 201400:22:27

This episode's guest is many things - including an author and writer, running coach, scuba instructor, Zen monk. He’s also a single father of an adopted son. In 2011, he left his career to explore a nomadic lifestyle with his then 9-year old son, believing that by ‘world schooling’ him, he can give his son the greatest opportunity, the chance to experience and learn about the amazing and complex world in which we live.
Talon Windwalker shares these stories, struggles, and experiences on his blog, 1dad1kid.com. I’m thrilled to connect with Talon, and share his story about living without regrets, and why it’s so important to give young people the encouragement and opportunity to travel.

What We Cover:

How a trip to the Philippines to help with cleft palette surgeries changed Talon's life by exposing him to the beauty of the people and transformations, and gave Talon a desire to "experience life on a deeper level."
How he came to the decision to "world school" his son.
How by changing your travel style just a little, you can expose yourself to amazing experiences.

217: Halloween Horror Nights 25, An Immersive Theater Experience06 Oct 201500:16:47

*2015 marks the 25th anniversary of Halloween Horror Nights here at Universal Studios in Orlando. Every year since 1991, this event has grown not only at this park, but at other Universal Studios Theme Parks all around the world.
Together, my wife and I got to experience the whole event as a part of a VIP press event, which included touring 9 elaborately designed haunted mazes and multiple outdoor “scare zones”. They’ve basically turned the entire theme park and nine of the professional sound stages into one enormous haunted environment. It was, hands down, the most incredible and surreal outdoor atmosphere and immersive theater experience I’ve ever wandered through.

Interested in attending Halloween Horror Nights 25?
This is the perfect year to go for the first time or return and re-immerse yourself in the 25 years of Horror Night homage. Get your tickets information here. And be sure to check out these posts from friends of the show for everything you need to know:

91: Youngest American to Visit Every Country in the World with Lee Abbamonte10 Sep 201400:37:47

In this session, I have the privilege to talk to the person who holds the world record for being the youngest American to visit every country in the world.

Lee Abbamonte appears regularly on Fox, Travel Channel, NBC, CNN, BBC, ESPN and many others as well as the New York Times, Washington Post, Conde Nast, to name merely a few. Arthur Frommer called him the Marco Polo of the 21st century and Samantha Brown said his ‘gumption is a jewel all travelers - would be and expert - can rely on.'”

After earning his MBA, he took a career in Wall Street for 8 years. There he realized he could leverage his job to travel and work from the road. He got started and never looked back eventually crossing off every country from his list.

What We Cover:

Lee’s accidental start to world travel
How Lee’s gone from traveler to embedded in the travel industry
Lee's life changing experience with the people on Pitcairn Island
Lee's take on the effects of travel
Getting shot at trying to get into Libya during a war to complete his quest of being the youngest person to travel to every country in the world
Where Lee recommends you travel now before the tourism picks up

Explorer’s Quote:

“My favorite travel stories from across the world come from people as opposed to places.”

90: Embrace Your Inner Weirdness with Chris Backe09 Sep 201400:35:53

Chris Backe left Kentucky for Korea, where he lived in Seoul and taught English as a way to create for himself an opportunity to make travel a bigger, more regular part of his day-to-day.
Last year, he and his wife moved to Thailand -where they’ve been bouncing between cities and exploring as much as they can of a very popular country.
But to make things interesting, Chris has this fascination with the WEIRD things he encounters on his  travels and he covers the beat of weird across Asia on his blog, One Weird Globe. In this session, we'll discuss why he’s choosing a life of travel, and how he does it — which includes what it took for him to get a job teaching English in Korea and manage his own classroom of children in a foreign country — along with what 'weird' means to him and his relationship to it, and how travel can help us redefine and become comfortable with the weirdness in all of us.
So, if weird’s your thing, let’s get weird.

What We Cover:

Chris left his job teaching computer classes at a library to teach english in Korea before eventually wanting even more, which led him to Thailand
Good skills and experience to have to get your ESL certification and a job teaching English overseas
How teaching English overseas can be a great way to teach English overseas
How Chris got into weird things and how his definition of weird has changed by exposing him to increasingly weird things.

89: The Value of Travel Stories with Lavinia Spalding08 Sep 201400:28:25

Today we're talking about the value of stories in travel or life and why they matter to the individual and society. I want us to explore why travel matters and today's guest gives us the chance to do exactly that.

Lavinia Spalding is the author of two books, With a Measure of Grace: Recipes of a Small Town Restaurant and Writing Away: A Creative Guide to Awakening the Journal Writing Travel, which helps travelers find an authentic story and access tools to better chronicle their journeys as writers, bloggers, or storytellers. She's also the editor of the Best Women's Travel Writing collections and featured in a slew of publications including Gadling and the San Francisco magazine.

I'm excited to talk to her today about what I mentioned today about stories and why they matter and how to look at them as something you can take home and share for the rest of your life, and why that matters.

What We Cover:

Why finding stories is important to personal growth.
Being vulnerable to the world is the best way to let the best stories happen to you.
Lavinia’s life-changing experience being shown around Florence by two Italian men.
Travel is the best way to embrace the Other.
Why it’s important to unplug and disconnect from your phone and computer when you travel or stay at hostels if you want to connect with other cultures and get the most growth from your experience.
