Another Unnecessary List- Is Rock And Roll A Sound Or A Stance
The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame always finds a way to start a fight, and the 2026 class is no exception. We jump from concert posters and the closing of Gallery 1988 to a full-on debate about what the Hall is supposed to reward: sales, influence, longevity, cultural disruption, or some messy mix of all four.
We break down the 2026 Rock Hall inductees Phil Collins, Billy Idol, Iron Maiden, Joy Division/New Order, Oasis, Sade, Luther Vandross, and Wu-Tang Clan, then pull apart the logic behind the biggest headline: Mariah Carey getting left out again. We lay out the stats, talk through the “rock bias” that still shows up in voting, and ask why pop legends keep getting treated like side quests in a museum that claims to document music history. From there, we dig into influence as a real musical currency, from Iron Maiden’s blueprint for modern metal to Joy Division and New Order shaping alternative and electronic rock for decades.
The conversation widens to the definition of rock and roll itself, including hip hop’s place in the Hall and why Wu-Tang’s impact fits the original spirit of rebellion better than a narrow “guitars only” rule. We also get into the practical side of the ceremony: who can actually perform, why some years feel like catch-up years, and which artists we think the Hall keeps missing, especially Jeff Buckley. We wrap with what’s exciting right now, including a surge of women-fronted rock and a reminder that defining live moments like Nine Inch Nails at Coachella can be as historic as any induction.
If you’ve got a take, we want it. Subscribe, share this with the friend who always argues about the Rock Hall, and leave a review with who you think got snubbed most.

Let's Talk Vine(YL)- Pearl Jam Made Babies And Charities And Maybe Your CPR Playlist
A city can change your ears. We sat down in Seattle and felt how tightly the scene is woven: musicians who become neighbors, venues that double as history lessons, and a band’s 35‑year arc that still bends toward community. Pearl Jam isn’t just posters in shop windows; it’s the reason for cross‑country moves, friendships forged in parking lots, and a thousand small charities that took root because the music said do more and the people actually did.
The night’s centerpiece is a room built for deep listening. At Shibuya Hi‑Fi, the lights dim, the door seals, and a needle turns Wish You Were Here into a brand‑new experience. Vintage gear, precise setup, and a no‑drink, no‑noise ritual invite you to hear string scrape, breath, and space you’ve missed for years. We talk about turning that focus into fuel for good: album sessions as fundraisers, rare‑tape dreams, and a Six Degrees tribute that connects Stax legends across time.
Wine runs through the conversation like a second soundtrack. A Syrah that honors a mentor and supports suicide prevention. A vineyard chosen on instinct days after Bowie’s passing. Why Syrah is a chameleon that speaks its place louder than most grapes. Along the way we chase joy in odd places—a 14‑mile city run, a detour into cast‑iron popcorn lore, a kid’s core memory meeting Jack White—and remember that the show is only three hours, but the life around it is where meaning sticks.
If you’re into Seattle music history, high‑fidelity listening, Pearl Jam’s lasting impact, or wines that tell a story, this one’s for you. Hit play, share it with a friend who loves records and late‑night venue tales, and leave a review to help more listeners find the show.

Another Unnecessary List - Behind the Music: Exploring the World's Most Influential Music Documentaries
Grab your headphones and settle in as we dissect Rolling Stone's controversial list of the Top 70 Music Documentaries of all time. What starts as a critical examination quickly transforms into a passionate debate about what truly makes a music documentary great.
The disconnect becomes apparent immediately: Is Rolling Stone's list actually about documentaries, or is it just another way to celebrate their favorite musicians? We unpack how concert films are fundamentally different from true music documentaries, yet Rolling Stone lumps them together without clear criteria. The result? A list that favors established names over genuine documentary excellence.
From Metallica's raw vulnerability in "Some Kind of Monster" to the manufactured mythology of "Montage of Heck," we analyze why some films reveal authentic truths while others reinforce carefully constructed images. When Bob Dylan's "Don't Look Back" takes the #1 spot, we ask the uncomfortable question: is this truly the pinnacle of music documentary filmmaking, or just Rolling Stone paying homage to their perennial favorite?
The conversation extends beyond critique as we share our own must-see music documentaries that offer genuine insight into artists, their creative processes, and the cultural moments they inhabited. From "Pearl Jam 20" to lesser-known gems like "Dennis and Lois" and "The Fearless Freaks," we champion films that balance musical performance with human storytelling.
Whether you're a documentary enthusiast or a music lover seeking deeper connections with your favorite artists, this episode will transform how you view the intersection of music and filmmaking. The greatest music documentaries transcend fandom—they should reveal something universal about creativity, human relationships, and the artistic struggle that resonates with any thoughtful viewer.

Let's Talk Vine(YL)- Vinyl Time Capsules: Pearl Jam Covers and Discoveries
We discuss the fascinating world of Pearl Jam covers - both songs they've covered and Pearl Jam songs covered by other artists. The conversation reveals our different perspectives on whether cover songs enhance or detract from Pearl Jam's live performances.

Anthony chats with Paul Schalda of Paul & The Tall Trees
Paul Schalda is a poet, perhaps a bit of a tortured soul, a hopeless romantic, and a guy from Staten Island. That last bit might not make sense to people who aren’t from New York. Let’s say that it puts the blue in his collar and sticks his feet to the ground. Paul’s music seems to embody the unexpected overlap of The Band’s Americana, Ian MacKaye’s unhinged emotion, Otis Redding’s raw soul, and the doo-wop melodies his father, Bill Schalda Sr. (a member of Brooklyn vocal group, The Montereys) raised him on. His sophomore album is produced by long time collaborator and old friend Tommy Brenneck and Big Crown’s own Leon Michels. For the people who are already fans of Paul’s debut Our Love In Light, the growth and maturity will be impossible to miss.
Paul spent some years out on the road playing guitar in The Extraordi- naires backing the late great Charles Bradley where they became close friends. During that time he penned a few songs for Charles, one of which he wound up recording himself. That song, “Beware” showcases another side of P&TTT’s range, a gritty, driving, warning tune where the band has a chance to get funky. One thing you hear in Schalda’s music, no matter which song, is that the road hasn’t been easy. His voice can be hauntingly harsh, yet hopeful and tender, raucous and gravelly one moment, smooth and intimate the next.
Even though he is being compared to the famous groups and musicians mentioned above, he can only call it Rock and Roll and be humbled. “I’m very lucky to be able to do this,” Schalda says. “And I’m extremely happy. Especially for my father. He worked hard for his sons and this record.”

Another Unnecessary List- From White Stripes To Soundgarden: A Candid Review Of The Rock Hall Night
The Rock Hall came in loud, messy, and unexpectedly moving—and we brought receipts. We open with a mea culpa that doubles as a manifesto: Iron Maiden belongs in the Hall. When you put their global sales, generational influence, and still‑feverish fanbase next to multiple inductees, the picture changes fast. From there we break down the night’s sharpest highs and softest misses: Salt‑N‑Pepa’s clinic in craft and energy, a Warren Zevon tribute that needed Werewolves of London, and Cyndi Lauper’s command of a room that didn’t always return the favor.
We dig into the White Stripes’ legacy with clear eyes: why Feist and Olivia Rodrigo’s “We’re Going To Be Friends” worked and why making “Seven Nation Army” about yourself doesn’t. Jack White’s speech lands like a love letter to small rooms and big risks, and we push back on the lazy “Meg can’t drum” take—serving the song is a skill. Outkast’s segment wrestles with tech issues, but Tyler, the Creator detonates “B.O.B.” and reminds everyone what modern hip‑hop virtuosity looks like. Then Soundgarden turns the room inside out: Taylor Momsen surprises, Toni Cornell devastates on “Fell on Black Days,” and Nancy Wilson powers through more malfunction to honor Chris Cornell’s towering range and the band that bridged punk and Sabbath weight.
We close by asking better questions of the Hall. What is “rock and roll” in 2025 if not attitude, risk, and reinvention across hip‑hop, punk, metal, pop, and alternative? If next year’s first‑timer pool is thin, it’s time to right some wrongs: Mariah Carey, Iron Maiden, Joy Division/New Order, Wu‑Tang Clan, and long‑snubbed pillars like the Pixies, the Replacements, and Black Flag. Along the way, we unpack catalog sales, a smart theory behind the Oasis reunion, and why safe, templated finales shrink big nights.
If you love strong opinions backed by facts and lived fandom, hit play. Then tell us who we got right, who we got wrong, and who you’d induct tomorrow. Subscribe, share with a friend, and leave a review so more music nerds can find the show.

Listen in as we kick things off with a walk down memory lane, reflecting on the iconic early 2000s music scene and our own sartorial missteps, including a hilarious look back at my bedazzled JNCO jeans phase and my 21st birthday. But it's not all laughs; we also explore the physical and mental marathon of half-marathons, diving into the trials of being a "Clydesdale" runner and the rush of pushing through race after race.
Pour yourself a glass of wine and settle in as we chat about more than just music—experience the richness of Italian wines and the vibrancy of Pearl Jam concerts. With special guest Jeff Whitman unable to join us at the wine tasting event, his stunning photos still paint a vivid backdrop to our discussion. Another Unnecessary List- PitchForks best Albums from the last 25 years
Saying goodbye to a simpler age, we step into a vibrant discussion about Paul and the Tall Trees, whose music has the swagger of a Tarantino score. It's a reflection of times when discovery was a live, unmediated thrill—a reminder of the sheer joy of stumbling upon a new favorite sound in a crowded room. From there, we orbit around the Pitchfork readers' choice of the 200 best albums, an odyssey through time that resurrects the ghosts of CDs past and the tactile allure of vinyl. Brian, the artistic genius behind our branding, gets his due as we fold in tales of personal endurance, like the cathartic slog of half marathons, and the changes life throws our way.
The heart of our chat beats to the rhythm of a heated debate over music rankings, where the fervor of Pearl Jam's fanbase clashes with the subjective nature of rating art. We explore the hip-hop landscape, tipping our hats to Kendrick Lamar's genius while admitting our hearts still beat strongest for the '90s classics. The strains of The Strokes echo through our conversation on the NYC indie scene, and we're not shy about questioning the scarcity of groundbreaking female artists in those top album lists. The raw emotion of Radiohead's 'In Rainbows' sweeps us up in a discussion that's as much about the resonance of music as it is about cultural critique.
As the episode winds down, we swerve into a contemplative lane, musing on the emotional heft of albums like David Bowie's 'Blackstar', and the enduring anthems of the White Stripes, which seem to transcend time itself. With an eye on the rearview mirror, we reminisce about cult films like "Mallrats" and their quirky soundtracks, before I share a slice of my world—from the thrill of live music to the personal challenges and triumphs of marathon running. So, whether you're jogging to the beat or simply soaking in the soundscapes, join us, Anthony and the ever-talented Brian, for an episode that dances through the cultural fabric of our lives.

Another Unnecessary List- Rollingstone.com Top 100 Music Videos of all time
Brian Meth's uncle never could have predicted that a Jose Feliciano concert would lead to a Led Zeppelin opening – a story so rich in the unexpected it could only have been real life. It’s tales like these that fueled our latest jam session at the "Necessary List," where we found ourselves tangled in the vibrant history of music videos. Joined by the illustrious poster artist and my dear comrade, Brian, we pored over the kaleidoscope of visuals that have become as iconic as the songs they accompany. From Madonna's boundary-pushing "Like a Prayer" to the theatrical masterpiece that is Michael Jackson's "Thriller," we celebrated the symbiotic dance between sound and sight.
Our studio in Kansas City was alive with the electric charge of nostalgia as we scrutinized and debated Rolling Stone's top music video rankings. With each riff and chorus, we dissected the cultural ripples of videos like "Sledgehammer" by Peter Gabriel and reflected on those that challenged the status quo – think Childish Gambino's "This Is America." But it wasn't just a journey into the past; we cast our gaze forward to the future of visual storytelling in music, weighing in on recent creations and the shifting landscape of media consumption.
As the 100th episode of "Another Unecessary List" unfurled before us, we were reminded of the gratitude we have for those who tune in. We teased a little about the future – the website's redesign and the new content we're itching to share. With Brian by my side, we wrapped up feeling amped about where music videos have been and excited for where they're headed. What happens when billion-dollar executives decide concert tickets aren't expensive enough? The answer might explain why your favorite bands are disappearing from the road.
In this candid solo episode, I dive deep into the economics of concert tickets after Live Nation CEO Michael Rapino's controversial statement that tickets have been "underpriced for too long." Breaking down exactly where your money goes when you buy a $100 concert ticket reveals a shocking truth – artists often walk away with just $8 per ticket, while venues and ticketing services take the lion's share. This explains why bands like Garbage have announced they'll no longer tour extensively in the US, citing "unmanageable" economics.
Beyond the financial breakdown, I explore the different ways we experience live music – solo, with friends, or as an observer watching someone else connect with an artist for the first time. Each approach offers unique rewards, from the freedom of attending alone to the shared memories created with companions. There's something magical about standing in a room full of strangers who've come together through music, regardless of their differences.
The episode wraps with my summer 2025 playlist featuring standout tracks from Liam Finn, Paul Schalda, Viagra Boys, Wolf Alice, Nine Inch Nails, and Turnstile – artists who remind us why we fight to keep live music accessible despite rising costs.
Whether you're a casual concertgoer or a dedicated touring fan, this conversation tackles the hard questions about the future of live music in an industry that increasingly prioritizes profits over passion. How long before we're all priced out of the experiences that make us feel alive?
