The Compound Effect: Small Practices, Powerful Change
29 Sep 2026
00:11:32
Week 5 ā The Compound Effect: Small Practices, Powerful Change
What if changing how you feel in your body doesnāt require one enormous breakthrough?
What if meaningful change begins with something much smaller?
A moment of awareness. A gentler movement. A pause before reacting. A little more curiosity and a little less judgement.
Welcome to the final episode of Somatic in September.
Over the past few weeks, Heidi Hadley has taken us on a journey through the Australian landscape to explore the remarkable relationship between your brain, body and nervous system.
Weāve stood beneath the ancient trees of the rainforest and explored resilience.
Weāve travelled beneath the surface of the Great Barrier Reef to discover the importance of interconnection.
Weāve encountered the crocodile and considered the protective wisdom of the nervous system.
And weāve stepped away from the noise to rediscover stillness, connection and presence.
Now, in our final episode, we bring everything together with one powerful idea:
Small practices, repeated consistently, can create powerful change.
š± The Power of Small Shifts
When we want something to change, itās easy to assume we need to do more.
More effort. More stretching. More exercise. More discipline.
But lasting change isn't always created through one dramatic action.
Sometimes it begins quietly.
Perhaps you notice tension a little earlier than you did before.
Maybe you become curious about a sensation rather than immediately judging it.
Perhaps you notice your breathing, soften unnecessary effort or spend a few quiet moments connecting with the world around you.
Individually, these moments can seem insignificant.
But repeated over time, they begin to accumulate.
Like roots deepening quietly beneath the earth, small practices can create the foundations for powerful change.
Why consistency can be more powerful than intensity
The role of awareness and curiosity in Somatic Movement
How your brain, body and nervous system continually work together
Why noticing small changes matters
How reducing self-judgement can change your relationship with your body
The importance of bringing somatic awareness into everyday life
How the lessons from Somatic in September connect
How to continue developing your somatic practice beyond this series
šæ Your Final Somatic in September Reflection
Take a few moments to think back over the past month.
Ask yourself:
What has surprised me?
What have I noticed about my body that I wasn't noticing before?
Have there been moments when Iāve responded with curiosity rather than judgement?
Have I noticed tension sooner?
Have I experienced moments of greater ease, connection or presence?
Donāt dismiss the small changes because they donāt feel dramatic enough.
Notice them.
Those moments matter.
Because awareness itself is part of the practice.
And rather than searching for one enormous breakthrough, consider what might happen if you continued giving your brain and nervous system small opportunities to experience something different.
Small practice. Repeated consistently. Powerful change.

What if one of the most powerful things you could do for yourself today was simply⦠pause?
In Week 4 of Total Somaticsā Somatic in September, Heidi Hadley explores the power of pausing, presence and embodiment ā and why slowing down long enough to notice what is happening within your body can be such an important part of somatic awareness.
Modern life constantly pulls our attention outward. Notifications, responsibilities, deadlines and endless mental chatter can leave us feeling disconnected from our physical experience.
In this episode, Heidi invites you to turn your attention inward and become curious about what your body is communicating.
Rather than continually pushing, fixing or overriding sensations, what might happen if you paused and listened?
In this episode, youāll explore:
The power of the pause and why pausing doesn't mean doing nothing.
What embodiment means and how it can help you reconnect with your physical experience.
How to bring your attention out of the constant mental chatter and back into your body.
The importance of noticing sensations with curiosity rather than judgement.

Before Your Body Shouts: Learn to Hear the Whispers
15 Sep 2026
00:15:55
Week 3 ā Before Your Body Shouts: Learn to Hear the Whispers
What if your body isnāt fighting against you? What if itās trying to protect you?
Tight shoulders. A clenched jaw. Holding your breath. A body that seems unable to relax.
We can easily become frustrated with these sensations and wonder, āWhy wonāt my body just let go?ā
But what happens when we ask a different question?
āWhat might my body be trying to protect?ā
In Week 3 of Somatic in September, Heidi Hadley introduces us to one of Australiaās most ancient and misunderstood animals ā the crocodile ā to explore the remarkable protective intelligence of the human nervous system.
Crocodiles have survived for millions of years because their systems are exceptionally good at one thing: survival.
Your nervous system also has protection at its core.
Moment by moment, it receives sensory information and responds to what is happening within and around you. When your system perceives a need for protection, that response can sometimes be experienced as muscular tension, bracing, restricted breathing or a feeling of being unable to completely let go.
Rather than immediately treating those responses as something that needs to be fought or forced away, Somatic Movement invites us to become curious about them.
Because your body may not be the enemy.
It may be doing the best it can with the information it currently has.
And when we begin providing new sensory information and movement possibilities, we can start developing a very different relationship with our body.
š In This Episode, Youāll Explore:
Why your nervous system is constantly working to protect you
Why muscular tension and bracing may be protective responses
What the crocodile can teach us about survival and adaptation
Why your body can sometimes find it difficult to ālet goā
The connection between stress, breathing and muscular tension
Why forcing a tense body to relax may not always be the answer
How Somatic Movement can provide new sensory information
The importance of noticing your bodyās quieter signals
How curiosity can change the way you experience tension and discomfort
Why working with your body can feel very different from fighting against it
šæ Your Somatic in September Practice
This week, notice one moment when your body becomes tense.
Perhaps your shoulders rise.
Your jaw tightens.
Your breathing changes.
Your stomach contracts.
Your hands grip.
Or you notice yourself bracing somewhere in your body.
Instead of immediately trying to make the tension disappear, pause for a moment.
Notice it.
And gently ask yourself:
āWhat might my body be protecting right now?ā
You donāt need to find the perfect answer.
The practice is simply about replacing frustration with curiosity.
Notice what happens when, rather than demanding that your body change, you become interested in what it may be communicating.
š§ Your Guided Somatic Practice
You'll find a guided Somatic Movement practice accompanying this episode to support your exploration throughout the week.
Approach the movements gently and with curiosity.
Remember:
Youāre not trying to override your body. Youāre offering it new options.
Your nervous system has spent your entire life gathering information, adapting and trying to protect you.
Learning to recognise its quieter signals may help you notice what your body is communicating before it has to shout for your attention.
Next week, we complete our Somatic in September journey by stepping away from the noise and rediscovering something many of us have quietly lost:
Connection. Stillness. Presence.
Until then, remember:
Your body has spent every moment of your life trying to protect you.
The moment we stop seeing the body as the enemy and begin approaching it as a partner, our relationship with ourselves can start to change.
Stay curious. Stay compassionate with your body.

Week 2 ā Your Body Is Listening to Everything ā Are You?
What if the tension in your neck isnāt just about your neck?
What if your breathing, nervous system, fascia, muscles, thoughts and emotions are all part of a much bigger conversation happening throughout your body?
In Week 2 of Somatic in September, Heidi Hadley takes us beneath the surface of Australiaās spectacular Great Barrier Reef to explore a powerful idea:
Your body is not a collection of separate parts. It is an interconnected system.
Just as a coral reef thrives through thousands of living relationships, your body relies on constant communication and adaptation.
Your fascia, muscles, nervous system, breathing and sensory experiences donāt operate independently. They continually influence one another.
And when we stop focusing solely on individual āproblem areasā and begin paying attention to the relationships between the parts, something can shift.
Perhaps wellbeing isnāt about achieving perfection.
Perhaps itās about improving connection.
š In This Episode, Youāll Explore:
Why your body is more interconnected than you may realise
What the Great Barrier Reef can teach us about the human body
The relationship between fascia, muscles and your nervous system
Why focusing only on the area of discomfort can miss the bigger picture
How breathing and sensory awareness influence your whole system
Why diversity and adaptability can create resilience
How thoughts and physical sensations continually influence our experience
Why wellbeing doesnāt require every part of you to be āperfectā
How simple observation can help develop greater body awareness
The importance of curiosity when exploring patterns of tension and movement
šæ Your Somatic in September Practice
Take five minutes this week to observe something in nature.
Watch the waves.
Notice clouds moving across the sky.
Observe birds flying, trees moving in the breeze or water flowing.
Rather than concentrating on one individual element, notice how everything works together.
Then bring that same curiosity to your body.
Notice your breathing.
Notice your shoulders.
Notice your jaw.
Notice your eyes.
Notice where youāre holding effort ā and where you feel ease.
Thereās nothing you need to force or fix.
Simply observe.
Sometimes becoming aware of the relationships within our body can give our nervous system new information and new possibilities.
š§ Your Guided Somatic Practice
To accompany this episode, Heidi is sharing a 33-minute gentle movement practice designed to explore and release patterns of tension around the:
Think of this practice not as forcing your body to change, but as offering your nervous system new sensory information and a different conversation.
Next week, we meet one of Australiaās most misunderstood animals ā the crocodile ā and explore why the protective patterns we develop arenāt necessarily mistakes.
They may be intelligent strategies your nervous system learned for survival.
For now, remember:
āThe reef doesnāt thrive because of one single coral. It thrives because of relationships.ā
Your body may be much the same.
Healing and wellbeing aren't only about one part.
They're about the relationship between all the parts and the relationship you have with yourself.

Week 1 ā Resilience: How Your Body Learns to Adapt
What if resilience isnāt about staying strong, pushing through or never struggling?
What if resilience is something your body is already learning ā every single day?
In Week 1 of Somatic in September, Heidi Hadley takes you into the ancient Daintree Rainforest to explore what nature can teach us about resilience, adaptation and the remarkable capacity of the human body to change.
Ancient trees donāt survive because they avoid storms. They survive because they adapt.
Your body does something remarkably similar.
Throughout life, your nervous system continually responds to experience, while your fascia and neuromuscular system adapt to the demands placed upon them. Rather than seeing ourselves as permanently āstuckā, understanding this adaptability can offer a very different perspective:
Change is possible.
In this episode, Heidi explores:
Why resilience doesnāt mean being calm all the time What ancient trees can teach us about adapting to change How your nervous system continually responds and learns from experience How fascia remodels throughout life Why patterns in the body donāt necessarily have to be permanent The difference between resilience and simply āpushing throughā How curiosity can help us develop greater body awareness Why small, consistent experiences can create meaningful change over time
š³ Your Somatic in September Practice
This week, find a tree.
It might be in your garden, your local park, along your morning walk, or even outside your office window.
Take a moment to really notice it.
Then ask yourself:
What has helped this tree to grow?
Consider its roots. The weather it has endured. The seasons it has experienced. The conditions that have shaped it.
Then gently turn the question towards yourself:
What has helped me to grow?
No judgement. No need to fix anything.
Just curiosity.
Because perhaps resilience isnāt about avoiding the storms of life.
Perhaps itās about developing deeper roots, greater adaptability and the capacity to find our way back towards balance.

Have you ever stretched the same tight muscle again and again, only to find that the tension keeps coming back?
Perhaps the question isn't simply, āHow do I get this muscle to let go?ā
Perhaps there's a much bigger conversation happening.
In this episode of The Total Somatics Show, Heidi Hadley continues our exploration of fascia by looking beyond individual muscles and tissues to something far more fascinating: the interconnected communication taking place throughout your entire body.
Your body isn't a collection of separate parts.
Your brain, nervous system, muscles, fascia, sensory systems and movement patterns are continually communicating and adapting. Much of this happens automatically, without you consciously thinking about it.
Think of your body like an orchestra.
If you listened only to the violin, you'd miss the richness of the cello, piano, percussion and every other instrument contributing to the music.
Your body is much the same.
When an area continually feels tight, restricted or reluctant to ālet go,ā focusing solely on that muscle or the fascia may mean we're listening to just one instrument ā while missing the rest of the orchestra.
In This Episode, You'll Explore:
Why your body should be viewed as an interconnected system rather than separate parts
How your brain, nervous system, muscles and fascia communicate
Why persistent tightness may involve more than the area where you actually feel the tension
How the nervous system influences patterns of muscle tension and movement
The role of sensory information in how your brain organises movement
How neuroplasticity gives the nervous system opportunities to learn and adapt
Why protective patterns aren't necessarily something we need to fight against
How curiosity about your whole system can change the way you approach your body
A Different Question to Ask Your Body
Rather than always asking:
āHow do I make this tight area release?ā
Try becoming curious about:
āWhy might my system be maintaining this pattern?ā
And perhaps even more importantly:
āWhat new information could I give my brain and nervous system to help create another possibility?ā
This subtle shift takes us away from battling with the body and towards understanding the extraordinary communication happening within it.
Somatic in September Is Coming
This episode also creates the bridge into Somatic in September, where we'll begin exploring the body from a much broader perspective.
We'll look beyond fascia alone and explore the fascinating relationship between fascia, the nervous system, protective reflexes, sensory awareness, movement and neuroplasticity ā and how these systems work together to influence how you move, feel and respond to life.
Because sometimes the most interesting question isn't:
āWhy won't my body let go?ā
It's:
āWhat is my body trying to tell me?ā

Everyoneās Talking About Fascia ā But What Are We Missing?
18 Aug 2026
00:27:36
Fascia seems to be everywhere at the moment. Social media is talking about it, movement professionals are exploring it, and more people are becoming curious about the role this remarkable connective tissue plays in how we move and feel.
But what exactly is fascia ā and are we in danger of looking at it in isolation?
In this episode of The Total Somatics Show, Heidi Hadley introduces you to the fascinating world of fascia and, importantly, places it within the bigger picture of your body.
Fascia isn't simply something to stretch, release or work on. It exists as part of an extraordinarily interconnected system involving your brain, nervous system, muscles, movement patterns and sensory experiences.
So rather than simply asking, āHow can I release this tight area?ā, perhaps there are more interesting questions we can begin asking:
Why is my nervous system maintaining this pattern?
What sensory information is my brain receiving?
And how can I help my brain and body discover new possibilities through neuroplasticity and somatic movement?
In this episode, you'll discover:
What fascia is and why it has suddenly become such a popular topic
Why fascia shouldn't be viewed as a separate system within the body
The relationship between fascia, muscles, the brain and nervous system
Why stress can influence muscle tone and how we experience tension
Why repeatedly targeting a ātightā area may not always address the bigger picture
How sensory awareness and neuroplasticity fit into the Total Somatics approach
Why understanding the body as an interconnected system can change the way we approach movement, tension and resilience
This episode also begins our journey towards Somatic in September, when we'll explore these connections more deeply and discover practical ways to support greater awareness, adaptability and ease within the body.
Rather than chasing the latest fascia trend, let's become curious about something much bigger:
What if fascia is only one part of an incredible conversation taking place throughout your body every moment of every day?

Did Your Childhood Teach You to Survive Instead of Connect? - The Total Somatics Show
03 Aug 2026
00:44:05
Have you ever wondered why you overthink, stay busy, struggle to switch off, or feel emotionally exhaustedāeven when life seems to be going well?
What if these aren't personality traits at all?
What if they're learned survival patterns?
In this episode of The Total Somatics Show, Heidi Hadley explores how our early life experiences shape the way our nervous system responds to the world around us. Through a Total Somatics lens, you'll discover how emotionally unpredictable environments can teach us to survive rather than truly connectāwith ourselves, our bodies and those around us.
This isn't about blaming parents or caregivers. Most people do the very best they can with what they know. Instead, this episode is about developing awareness, understanding your body's protective responses, and recognising that the patterns you learned can also be changed.
In this episode you'll discover:
Ā Why many of our stress responses begin long before adulthood.Ā
Ā How emotionally dysregulated environments influence the developing nervous system.Ā
Ā The difference between surviving and truly feeling safe.Ā
Ā Why you may find yourself constantly busy, people-pleasing or always "pushing through."Ā
Ā How stress can show up as muscle tension, posture changes, shallow breathing and persistent fatigue.Ā
Ā Why your body often reacts before your mind has time to think.Ā
Ā How chronic survival patterns can influence anxiety, relationships, confidence, work and everyday life.Ā
Ā Why awareness is the first step towards lasting change.Ā
You'll also learn why many of the habits we judge ourselves for were once intelligent survival strategiesāand why your body deserves compassion, not criticism.
Questions to reflect on
As you listen, take a moment to ask yourself:
Ā What does my body do first when I feel stressed?Ā
Ā Do my shoulders rise?Ā
Ā Does my jaw tighten?Ā
Ā Do I hold my breath?Ā
Ā Do I keep pushing through?Ā
Ā Or do I quietly pull away?Ā
Ā Am I living in my head more than I'm living in my body?Ā
These small moments of awareness are often where meaningful change begins.
Through a Total Somatics lens
One of the key messages in this episode is that your nervous system isn't broken.
It adapted.
Many of the patterns that now leave you feeling anxious, disconnected or exhausted were once your body's way of helping you navigate uncertainty.
The wonderful news is that the brain and body remain adaptable throughout life. Through neuroplasticity and greater body awareness, it's possible to update old patterns and create new ways of responding that feel calmer, more connected and more resilient.

Are You Living or Just Surviving? - The Total Somatics Show
27 Jul 2026
00:34:21
Welcome to the very first episode of The Total Somatics Show.
Have you ever wondered why certain people, situations or even news headlines can affect you so deeply?
Why do some people seem calm on the outside, yet feel constantly on edge within?
And what if the way you respond today isn't really about today at all?
In this opening episode, Heidi explores one of the most important concepts in Total Somatics: the difference between living and surviving.
Through a Total Somatics lens, you'll discover how your nervous system, posture, breathing, muscle tension and everyday behaviours may all be reflecting learned survival patterns that began yearsāeven decadesāago.
This isn't about blame. It's about understanding.
When we understand our patterns, we can begin to change them.
In this episode, you'll discover:
Why many people live from survival mode without realising it.
How emotionally unpredictable environments can shape the nervous system.
The connection between stress, muscle tension, posture and breathing.
Why you may spend more time in your head than connected to your body.
How high-functioning anxiety, people-pleasing, overworking or withdrawing can all be different expressions of the same underlying survival response.
Why awareness is the first step towards meaningful and lasting change.
How neuroplasticity gives us hope that learned patterns can be updated.
Heidi also shares personal reflections about resilience, life experiences and the lessons that have shaped both her clinical practice and her outlook on life.
Throughout this podcast, you'll hear practical insights drawn from more than 25 years of clinical experience, combined with conversations around emotional intelligence, relationships, business, resilience, mindset and the human experienceāall explored through a Total Somatics perspective.
A question to reflect on
What does your body do first when you feel stressed?
Do your shoulders rise?
Does your jaw tighten?
Do you hold your breath?
Do you keep pushing through... or quietly pull away?
Sometimes our body tells us the truth long before our mind catches up.

Key Takeaways
⢠Strength isn't measured by how much you carryāit's also knowing when your body needs support.
⢠Persistent muscle tension often reflects protective neurological patterns rather than simply tight muscles.
⢠Living in a constant state of responsibility can reduce your nervous system's opportunity to recover and regulate.

Why Stretching Isn't Releasing Your Muscle Tension & Addressing Tendon Health
04 Jul 2026
00:16:15
What if the advice you've been given for years about stretching is only part of the story?
Millions of people stretch every day hoping to reduce pain, prevent injury and improve flexibility. Yet despite their best efforts, muscle tension returns, injuries keep recurring and movement often feels stiff and restricted.
In this episode of the Total Somatics Show, Heidi Hadley explores why stretching alone cannot restore healthy neuromyofascial function. Discover how a mismatch between flaccid, underactive muscles and stiff, overloaded tendons can increase your risk of injury, and why modern pain science, movement science and fascial science are transforming the way we understand healthy movement.
You'll also discover why pandiculationāour innate sensory motor reset mechanismāis emerging as one of the most effective ways to improve muscle function, restore movement quality and support long-term tendon health.
In this episode you'll discover:
ā Why muscle flexibility alone doesn't guarantee healthy movement
ā The important relationship between muscles, tendons and fascia
ā How tendon stiffness can increase injury risk
ā Why repeatedly stretching tight muscles often produces only temporary results
ā The difference between passive stretching and active neuromuscular control
ā How pandiculation restores communication between your brain and muscles
ā Why modern pain science, movement science and fascial science all support improving sensory motor control
ā Practical ways to move more efficiently, reduce recurring tension and build long-term resilience
Key Takeaways
⢠Healthy movement depends on communication between the brain, muscles, fascia and tendonsānot simply increasing flexibility.
⢠A muscle may appear "tight" because of altered neurological control rather than because it is physically short.
⢠When muscles become inhibited or lose efficient control, tendons may compensate by becoming excessively stiff, increasing mechanical load and injury risk.
⢠Improving sensory awareness and motor control through pandiculation helps restore balanced movement and healthier force distribution throughout the body.
⢠Better movement qualityānot simply more movementāis the key to long-term mobility and injury prevention.

Pandiculation: The Natural Solution to Chronic Pain and Discomfort:
Have you ever wondered why you understand your stress, know where it comes from, and have tried all the mindset strategiesāyet your body still feels tense, anxious, exhausted, or stuck?
The reason may be simpler than you think.
Stress and trauma are not just experiences of the mind. They are experiences of the entire nervous system.
In this episode of the Somatic Movement & Mindset Podcast, Heidi Hadley explores why lasting change requires more than positive thinking and mental strategies alone. While awareness and insight are valuable, the body often continues to hold patterns of protection long after the stressful event has passed.
You'll discover how chronic stress and trauma can become expressed through muscular tension, restricted breathing, altered posture, pain, fatigue, hypervigilance, and emotional reactivity. Most importantly, you'll learn how Clinical Somatics and pandiculation help retrain the brain and nervous system, allowing your body to release habitual tension and rediscover a greater sense of ease and safety.
In This Episode, You'll Learn:
ā Why stress and trauma are embodied experiences, not just mental experiences
ā How the nervous system prioritises protection and survival
ā Why understanding your stress doesn't automatically resolve it
ā The connection between chronic tension, posture, breathing, and emotional wellbeing
ā How unconscious muscular contraction can become a long-term habit
ā The role of neuroplasticity in creating lasting change
ā Why Clinical Somatics works directly with the brain-body connection
ā How pandiculation helps release tension and restore voluntary control of muscles
ā Practical ways to improve nervous system regulation and resilience
Key Takeaways
⨠You cannot always think your way out of a nervous system response.
⨠Chronic stress and trauma often create patterns of tension that become stored as habitual responses within the body.
⨠The body and brain are constantly communicating through sensation, movement, posture, breathing, and emotion.
⨠Clinical Somatics helps improve awareness and restore communication between the brain and body.
⨠Pandiculation works directly with the sensory motor cortex to help release chronic muscular tension and improve movement efficiency.
⨠Through neuroplasticity, the nervous system can learn new patterns of safety, ease, and resilience.
⨠Lasting transformation happens when we include the body in the healing process.

Why Your Core Exercises Aren't Fixing Your Back Pain
20 Jun 2026
00:23:54
Have you been told to strengthen your core to fix your back pain, yet despite doing countless planks, crunches, and core workouts, your discomfort keeps returning?
You're not alone.
In this episode of the Somatic Movement & Mindset Podcast, Heidi Hadley explores a hidden reason why traditional core exercises may not be delivering the results you expected.
While core strength has become one of the most common recommendations for back pain, many people are unknowingly developing chronic muscular bracing and co-contractionāa state where muscles remain excessively contracted, limiting mobility, reducing shock absorbency, and increasing tension throughout the body.
Discover why stability and rigidity are not the same thing, and how true movement health depends on your ability to both contract and release.
In This Episode You'll Discover:
ā Why strengthening your core isn't always the answer to back pain
ā What co-contraction is and how it develops
ā How excessive abdominal bracing can reduce mobility and movement efficiency
ā Why chronic muscle tension increases compressive forces on the spine
ā The relationship between breathing, posture, and back pain
ā How reduced shock absorbency affects your body from head to toe
ā Why stiffness is often mistaken for stability
ā The role of the nervous system in chronic tension and recurring pain
ā Why flexibility alone isn't the solution
ā How pandiculation helps retrain the brain and release chronic muscular holding patterns
Understanding Co-Contraction
Your body is designed to move with adaptability, efficiency, and ease.
However, when muscles around a joint contract simultaneously and remain partially engaged for prolonged periods, movement becomes restricted. This phenomenon, known as co-contraction, is often driven by stress, injury, fear of movement, repetitive habits, or well-intentioned advice to constantly "engage your core."
Over time, this can lead to:
Ā Increased muscle fatigueĀ
Ā Reduced mobilityĀ
Ā Restricted breathingĀ
Ā Increased spinal compressionĀ
Ā Poor shock absorptionĀ
Ā Persistent pain and stiffnessĀ
The result? A body that feels tight, guarded, and less capable of moving naturally.
Why More Tension Isn't More Stability
Many people associate a strong core with a healthy back.
But true stability comes from adaptabilityānot rigidity.
A healthy neuromuscular system allows muscles to contract when needed and release when they're not.
When muscles remain switched on unnecessarily, the nervous system loses efficiency, movement becomes less fluid, and pain often persists.
A Different Approach: Pandiculation
Pandiculation is a natural process that works directly with the brain and nervous system to help restore voluntary control of muscles.
Rather than forcing muscles to lengthen temporarily, pandiculation helps reset chronic tension patterns by improving communication between the brain and body.
This can help:
Ā Reduce chronic muscle tensionĀ
Ā Improve mobilityĀ
Ā Enhance postureĀ
Ā Support better breathing mechanicsĀ
Ā Improve shock absorbencyĀ
Ā Create more efficient movement patternsĀ
Ā Reduce recurring pain and discomfortĀ
Key Takeaway
The goal isn't simply to build a stronger core.
The goal is to create a body that can respond appropriately to the demands placed upon itācontracting when necessary and releasing when possible.
When we learn to reduce unnecessary muscular bracing and improve nervous system regulation, we create the conditions for more comfortable, efficient movement.

What If Your Pain Is Trying to Tell You Something?
13 Jun 2026
00:12:59
Have you ever wondered why pain keeps returning, even after you've tried everything you can think of?
Perhaps you've stretched, exercised, rested, had treatments, or sought professional advice, yet the discomfort continues to linger.
In this episode of the Somatic Movement & Mindset Podcast, Heidi Hadley explores a different perspective on chronic pain through the lens of neuroscience, neuroplasticity, and somatic science.
You'll discover why pain and damage are not always the same thing, how the nervous system can become overprotective, and why understanding your body's messages may be one of the most important steps towards lasting change.
Heidi explains how chronic muscle tension, stress, and protective movement patterns can influence the way we experience pain, and why developing greater body awareness can help us work with the body rather than against it.
This episode is designed to help you view your body with more curiosity, compassion, and understanding, while providing practical insights into how the brain and nervous system influence movement, tension, and discomfort.
In This Episode You'll Learn:
ā Why pain is an output of the brain and nervous system
ā The difference between acute pain and chronic pain
ā How stress and protective patterns can contribute to ongoing discomfort
ā What neuroplasticity is and how it influences pain patterns
ā The concept of sensory motor amnesia and why tension can become your "normal"
ā Why stretching alone may not address recurring muscular tension
ā How pandiculation helps improve brain to muscle communication
ā The importance of curiosity, awareness, and nervous system regulation in supporting wellbeing
Key Takeaway
Your body is not working against you.
Pain may not simply be a sign of damage. It may also be a sign of protection.
When we learn to listen to the body's messages, improve awareness, and support nervous system regulation, we can begin working with our body rather than fighting against it.

Your brain is constantly scanning for safety. When boundaries are unclear or repeatedly violated, the stress response stays switched on. Over time, this impacts focus, memory, emotional regulation, and decision making.
Clear boundaries help:
Reduce anxiety and overwhelm
Improve mental clarity and focus
Support emotional regulation
Lower stress hormone output
š± Boundaries and the Body
The body often carries the cost of poor boundaries. Chronic tension, pain, fatigue, and inflammation can be signals that the nervous system is overloaded.
Healthy boundaries support:
Reduced muscle tension and pain
Improved posture and breathing
Better sleep and recovery
Increased physical resilience
⨠Energetic Boundaries and Wellbeing
Energetic boundaries are not abstract. They are felt experiences of knowing when something is too much. When we ignore these signals, exhaustion and burnout follow.
Strong energetic boundaries allow you to:
Preserve emotional energy
Reduce people pleasing patterns
Stay grounded in challenging environments
Feel safe in your body and mind
š Key Takeaways to Reflect On
Boundaries are a form of nervous system regulation
You cannot think your way into healthy boundaries
The body often shows boundary fatigue before the mind notices
Regulated boundaries feel calm, not defensive
Awareness creates choice and change

Pandiculation: The Missing Link for Muscles, Fascia & Joints
28 Feb 2026
00:07:33
In this episode of Somatic Movement and Mindset, Heidi Hadley explores why pandiculation is the missing link in how we care for muscles, fascia, and joints, and why stretching alone often falls short.
If you have ever stretched consistently yet still felt tight, restricted, or in pain, this episode will help you understand why.Ā Heidi unpacks the science of how the nervous system controls muscle tone, how fascia adapts to habitual tension, and why joints rely on intelligent movement rather than force.
Pandiculation is not about pulling or forcing tissues. It is about restoring communication between the brain and body so movement becomes easier, lighter, and more efficient.
š§ What Heidi Covers in This Episode
Muscles and the Nervous System Muscles do not truly relax through stretching. Muscle tone is regulated by the brain and nervous system. Pandiculation actively resets this control, restoring voluntary movement and reducing unconscious holding.
Fascia and Adaptive Tension Fascia responds to how we move and how we habitually hold ourselves. Stretching can temporarily lengthen tissue but does not retrain the brain. Pandiculation improves hydration, glide, and elasticity by changing neural input rather than forcing tissue change.
Joints and Intelligent Movement Healthy joints depend on balanced muscular control and responsive fascia. Pandiculation improves joint health by reducing compression, improving shock absorbency, and restoring smooth coordinated movement.
Why Pandiculation Is Superior to Stretching Stretching pulls on tissue and often activates protective reflexes that create more tension. Pandiculation works with the nervous system, improving awareness, control, and long term change rather than short lived relief.
⨠Key Takeaways
Lasting change happens through the brain, not force
Fascia responds best to slow, mindful movement
Joints thrive on coordination, not compression
Pandiculation restores control rather than creating dependence
Awareness and intention are more powerful than effort
š¤ Watch the TEDx Talk
This episode connects directly with Heidi Hadley's TEDx talk exploring pandiculation as a natural solution for chronic pain and discomfort, presented through TEDx.
What if balance wasnāt something you trained from the ground up but something your brain orchestrates moment by moment?
In this episode of Somatic Movement and Mindset, Heidi Hadley explores why true balance begins in the brain and nervous system rather than the feet. Youāll learn how perception, sensory feedback, and habitual tension patterns influence stability, posture, and confidence in movement, and why simply strengthening or stretching the feet often misses the bigger picture.
This conversation brings together neuroscience, somatic awareness, and real-life movement habits to help you rethink balance in a way that feels empowering and practical.
š§ In This Episode, Heidi Explores:
Why balance is a brain-based process, not just a muscular one
How your nervous system uses sensory input to keep you upright and adaptable
The role of unconscious holding patterns and learned habits in balance issues
Why fear of falling or instability can quietly change how you move
How gentle, mindful movement helps retrain the brain for steadier balance
⨠Key Points to Reflect On:
Where do you notice unnecessary tension when you are standing or walking?
How often do you rush movement instead of allowing your brain time to sense and respond?
Are you trusting your body or constantly bracing against it?
What changes when you slow down and bring awareness to how you move?

Pain Science Explained: Why Your Brain Controls Chronic Pain Relief
07 Feb 2026
00:08:34
In this episode, we explore a powerful and often misunderstood truth about pain. Pain is not simply a muscle or tissue problem. It is a brain based experience.
Modern pain science shows us that the brain plays a central role in how pain is created, interpreted, and maintained. While muscles may feel tight, weak, or painful, they are often responding to messages coming from the nervous system rather than being the root cause.
You will learn how protective patterns develop in the brain through stress, injury, trauma, repetitive movement, or emotional load. Over time, these patterns can keep muscles in a constant state of contraction, leading to ongoing discomfort, stiffness, and pain even when there is no longer tissue damage.
This is where clinical somatic movement becomes so effective.
Clinical somatic movement works directly with the brain through slow, mindful, intentional movement. Instead of forcing muscles to stretch or strengthen, this approach helps the brain update outdated protective signals. Through processes such as pandiculation, the nervous system can relearn how to fully release muscle contraction, restore movement efficiency, and reduce pain at its source.
In this episode, you will discover:
⢠Why pain is an output of the brain, not just a symptom of the body ⢠How chronic muscle tension is often a learned neurological pattern ⢠Why stretching alone rarely creates lasting relief ⢠How clinical somatic movement retrains the brain to reduce pain naturally ⢠What it means to work with your nervous system rather than against it
If you are navigating midlife changes, persistent pain, or a sense that your body no longer responds the way it used to, this conversation will resonate deeply.

In this episode of Somatic Movement and Mindset, Heidi Hadley explores why trying to change habits through willpower alone often leads to frustration, burnout and self-criticism and what actually works instead.
Many habits are not conscious choices. They are automatic patterns driven by the nervous system and reinforced by repetition, stress and past experiences. When the body and brain perceive threat, overload or pressure, they default to what is familiar, even if it is no longer helpful.
In this episode, you will learn how lasting change happens when we work with the nervous system rather than against it.
We explore how clinical somatic movement and pandiculation are used to interrupt habitual patterns stored in the nervous system. Pandiculation is a voluntary, slow and mindful contraction followed by a controlled release. This process helps the brain receive new sensory feedback from the body, updating outdated motor patterns and reducing unconscious tension.
By bringing awareness to the body and gently re engaging the brain body connection, the nervous system is given new information. This allows old habits to soften and dissolve without force, discipline or pushing through resistance.
Rather than asking āWhy canāt I change?ā, this approach invites a different question Ā āWhat is my nervous system protecting me from?ā
In this episode, Heidi covers:  ⢠Why willpower is unreliable under stress  ⢠How habits are formed and maintained by the nervous system  ⢠The role of sensory feedback in changing behaviour  ⢠How pandiculation interrupts unconscious patterns  ⢠Why slowing down creates faster long term change  ⢠How to create safety in the body so new habits can emerge
This is an episode for anyone who feels stuck in patterns they intellectually understand but struggle to change, whether those habits relate to movement, posture, pain, stress responses, thoughts or behaviours.

In this powerful and deeply important conversation, Heidi Hadley is joined by financial literacy expert Emy Monday to explore why midlife women are now one of the fastest growing groups at risk of housing insecurity and homelessness and what can be done to change that trajectory.
Together, they unpack the often hidden pathways that lead women into vulnerability, including relationship breakdown, family and domestic violence, unpaid caregiving, renting later in life, and long standing financial blind spots that are rarely discussed until it is too late.
This episode goes beyond numbers and statistics to gently explore the emotional and nervous system layers that sit underneath money behaviours. Emy shares how scarcity mindset, fear of spending, people pleasing, guilt, and self worth patterns often develop through lived experience, trauma, and generational conditioning rather than poor decision making.
The conversation also shines a compassionate light on the silence many women grew up with around money. Heidi and Emy discuss how inherited beliefs about safety, dependence, and independence shape financial confidence and risk tolerance, and how women can break these cycles without blame or shame.
Importantly, this episode carries a strong message of hope. If you have ever thought, āI have left it too late,ā this conversation is for you. Emy outlines realistic steps women can take now to rebuild financial self trust, create stability, and move toward sustainable independence at any stage of midlife.
You will hear practical, accessible guidance on:
Why womenās homelessness is often undercounted and invisible
The link between nervous system safety and financial avoidance
Gentle ways to reconnect with your numbers without overwhelm
Building a safety focused budget and financial buffer
Planning for housing stability, even with modest or irregular income
Why it is never too late to change your financial direction
This episode is not about personal financial advice. It is about education, empowerment, and creating a future that takes care of you.
If you are navigating midlife, supporting someone who is, or want to understand the deeper emotional and systemic factors shaping womenās financial wellbeing, this is a conversation you will not want to miss.
