TFP 406: The Small Grip Fixes That Transformed My Game05 Jun 202500:18:31

Episode Summary:

On this solo episode of the podcast, Mehrban dives deep into one of the most transformative lessons he’s had in years — a session with his coach Hayan that revealed the power of small grip adjustments across every major stroke.

If you’ve ever felt like your serve lacks pop, your volleys aren’t stable, or your slice just floats — this episode is packed with actionable tweaks that can give you more power, spin, and control instantly.

🎯 What You’ll Learn:
  • How a subtle grip alignment shift—moving the index knuckle and fat part of the palm directly onto the continental bevel—unlocked more power and stability
  • Why choking up on the racket (leaving one finger’s width at the bottom) provides better control and maneuverability
  • The surprising benefit of spreading your trigger finger from the rest of the hand—and why pros do it
  • How these grip changes impacted Mehrban’s:
  • ✅ Volleys: More bite, stability, and precision (especially on the backhand volley)
  • ✅ Serves: More effortless racket drop and improved kick serve using a “toss-to-the-back-of-your-head” cue
  • ✅ Forehand: Shorter backswing, increased racket speed, and more relaxed contact
  • ✅ Slice Backhand: More consistent, low returns and tougher shots for poachers to handle

🛠️ Key Takeaways:
  1. Grip Shift: Align both the index knuckle and fat part of palm with the center of the continental bevel.
  2. Choke Up: Leave ~1 finger width at the bottom of the handle for added control (especially on volleys).
  3. Trigger Finger Spread: Separating the index finger enhances stability and feel.
  4. Open Face Volleys: Slightly cock the racket back and keep a compact stroke—no wild swings.
  5. Kick Serve Toss: Imagine the toss landing on the back of your head to find the right contact point.
  6. Racket Drop Cue: Use a “bicep curl” visualization to feel a natural and relaxed drop.
  7. Loose Grip = Fast Racket: Tension kills power; loosen your grip to unlock effortless whip.
  8. Test and Tweak: Every player is different—adjust incrementally and evaluate what works best for you.

🎾 Challenge for You:

Pick ONE tip from today’s episode—maybe a grip tweak, a serve cue, or volley technique—and test it in your next practice session. Let Mehrban know how it goes by tagging him on Instagram @tennis.files!

TFP 288: Dr. Mark Kovacs—Strength and Conditioning for Tennis Players: From the 2016 Archive01 Feb 202301:07:58

[From the archive: This episode was originally recorded and published in 2016]

In today’s episode, I spoke with world renowned sports science and fitness expert Dr. Mark Kovacs about strength and conditioning for tennis. Mark has trained numerous top professional tennis players, including John Isner, Sloane Stephens, Sam Querrey, Donald Young, and Melanie Oudin. Stack named Mark one of the Top 31 Fitness Professionals to Follow in 2015.

Mark is a performance physiologist, researcher, professor, author, speaker and coach with an extensive background training and researching elite athletes. He has been featured in many of the biggest sports and news publications, including ESPN, the New York Times, and Tennis Magazine. Mark was also a top college player at Auburn and achieved a world ranking on the ATP Tour.

To sum it up, Mark has one heck of a resume, and it is an honor to speak with him on the show today.

Mark co-authored an amazing book and resource, Complete Conditioning for Tennis (2nd edition), which was published a couple months ago. I have a copy of his book and have had a hard time putting it down in my spare time. It has a ton of invaluable information on how we can put together a personalized fitness program using the exercises and in-depth knowledge from Mark, E. Paul Roetert (former managing director of the United States Tennis Association’s Player Development Program) and Todd S. Ellenbecker (Vice President, Medical Services ATP World Tour, and clinic director at Physiotherapy Associates Scottsdale Sports Clinic in Scottsdale, Arizona).

The book also includes 56 videos illustrating the exercises and stretches which you can access online. The value in this book is unparalleled in comparison to any other tennis fitness book I’ve seen on the market so far.

In this episode, I ask Mark questions on how we can improve our tennis fitness to become better tennis players. We also talk about Complete Conditioning for Tennis (2nd edition) and some of the principles in the book that will help take your game to the next level.

Mark has an unbelievable amount of knowledge in sports science for tennis, and provided us all with a ton of value on The Tennis Files Podcast.

This is a great interview that I had with Rick from 2019 and I want to bring it back for you because the lessons are valuable and timeless.

Rick has coached five number one players: Venus and Serena Williams, Jennifer Capriati, Andy Roddick, and Maria Sharapova, as well as hundreds of world class professionals. He has guided his players to a combined 247+ USTA National Championships since 1985, and is widely regarded as one of the best tennis coaches of all time. Rick is also the founder of Rick Macci Tennis Academy, and is a highly sought out motivational speaker, clinician, and author.

On this episode, Rick discusses his philosophy on developing biomechanically-sound technique, gives us simple yet super-effective technique tips, and explains some huge mistakes in our technique that, if fixed, will supercharge your efficiency and power. I particularly love the power leak Rick mentions for the serve in the interview (I won't spoil it for you, you'll have to tune in to find out! :O) ).

On Episode 264 of The Tennis Files Podcast, I spoke with Milan Krnjetin, a former ATP pro, about how to be relentless and have a clutch mentality.

Milan started playing tennis in his hometown Novi Sad, Serbia, and he was ranked #2 in Serbia in the 18s division. He eventually came to the U.S. and played college tennis for Auburn University (top 25 program in the country). Milan played in professional leagues and on the ATP tour, where he reached a ranking of 1256 in the world. Milan eventually took a huge opportunity to be a hitting partner and coach for such players as Jelena Jankovic and Jovana Jaksic. He has an online platform called TENFITMEN which stands for Tennis Fitness Mental and a fantastic YouTube Channel which details his practices with the likes of Novak Djokovic, Kevin Anderson, Alex de Minaur, Hyeon Chung, and most recently Nick Kyrgios, along with great tips to improve your game.

On the show, you’ll learn how to become a relentless player, how to develop a clutch mentality, why improving requires winning little battles every day, how to fully prepare to play your best before matches, and much more!
