MSG Entertainment is being petty with its facial recognition capabilities. The company is actively banning employees from law firms that are litigating cases against it from patronizing its venues.


Inaccuracy in Facial Recognition of Black and Brown faces is still problematic for the technology, but, police departments arresting and jailing suspects who have clearly been misidentified is cruel and unusual.


The August LastPass security breach is way worse than we initially thought. We’re not saying you should leave LastPass, but, we certainly are no longer recommending it.


And ChatGPT has taken the internet by storm since its Nov. 30th release. We discuss the technology is, why schools are banning it, and how search is probably soon to undergo a massive shift.

Meta’s content moderation policy for Facebook and Instagram had a double standard for high-profile users compared to regular folks.


And the likes of Meta and Microsoft contemplate trying to gain Twitter market share with Twitter-like and WeChat-like super apps respectively.

Google is set to pay nearly $400 million to settle lawsuits with 40 state's attornies general over location data it wasn’t supposed to be collecting.


Regardless of how you feel about Elon Musk’s acquisition of Twitter, the new Twitter non-verified blue check mark, right now,  is creating confusion and making Twitter even less reliable.


The FTX crypto exchange bankruptcy could setback cryptocurrency in general for years and usher in traditional finance-type regulation.


And, even though the Tech Winter is getting colder with all of these big tech layoffs, the technology industry as a whole is still one of the best and strongest industries to get into.

Assaults To Free Speech: The Tech Jawn 5908 Nov 202201:00:13

Election misinformation safeguards in social media work fairly well unless the election lies come in foreign languages.


Many of last week’s Twitter rumors have come to pass. Twitter did lay off nearly half of its employees hours before asking some of them to come back. Twitter Blue actually cost $8, not $20, but it’s been postponed until after the election. And Elon Musk is concerned that advertisers leaving the platform is an assault on free speech.


And Meta made some big bets on the Metaverse and we ponder if the bets were the right ones, or if they are just several years too soon.

Be careful when having receipts emailed to you.  It looks like Square along with many other credit card processing companies is selling your contact information.


The acquisition of Twitter by Elon Musk happened last week and the new owner isn’t wasting time making changes.  Verified accounts are rumored to cost 20 bucks a month, big companies are preemptively pulling advertising from the platform, 25% of Twitter’s workforce may be terminated, and, in brighter news, Vine is coming back.


And, are subscriptions the future of the internet?

At Tesla’s We Robot event last week in Los Angeles company CEO Elon Musk unveiled the Optimus line of humanoid-looking robots, but, they didn’t seem to be all that autonomous. 


14 State Attorneys General sued TikTok claiming the social media platform was designed with the express intention of addicting young people to the app.


Matt Mulleweg, one of the creators of WordPress, and WP Engine, a WordPress-managed host, are going through it legally.

And big tech companies are appearing to get ready for an economic downturn with a bevy of hiring freezes and layoffs.

Meta has notified nearly 1 million Facebook users that their login information may have been compromised by apps downloaded from the App Store and Google Play.


Alphabet announced new devices during its Pixel event last week including the Google Pixel 7, Pixel 7 Pro, and the Pixel Watch.

IBM Expands Its Cybersecurity Leadership Centers to 20 HBCUs: The Tech Jawn 5327 Sep 202200:50:45

The Windows 11 22H2 Update is out. It’s the first major update of Windows 11 and we break down some of the new features and old features that Windows users should check out.


The latest version of WhatsApp allows users to join calls by typing a link. Call Links aims to make it easier for groups of up to 32 to join both voice and video calls.


Amazon decided that one Amazon Prime Day Event per year is not enough so it has officially announced the Prime Early Access Sale on October 10th and 11th.


And IBM announces 14 new Cybersecurity Leadership Centers at HBCUs bringing the total to 20. The cybersecurity industry is in dire need of qualified professionals and IBM is taking that stance, If we can’t find ‘em, train ‘em.

Uber confirmed that it took several key systems down in response to a cybersecurity breach allegedly perpetrated by an 18-year-old hacker.


And Customs & Border Protection can access your cell phones and other electronic devices without a warrant and even copy data and hold it for years. Here are a few ways you can protect yourself when traveling internationally.

Cosmetics company Sephora will pay $1.2 million in the first major settlement with the state of California’s Consumer Privacy Act for selling users' data without permission.


A federal judge sided with a Cleveland State University student stating that scanning his room before an online test violated his 4th Amendment rights.


And yes, the computer-generated, virtual avatar, FN Meka, created by two non-black executives which leans into racist stereotypes and tropes, is a form of digital blackface.

Apple wants employees back in the office for a hybrid work week, but, some employees want to remain remote.  Something has got to give, but, we don’t think it's going to be Apple.


A husband of a slain wife is sentenced to 65 years in prison after her Fitbit data told a different story about how and when she was murdered.


We thought facial recognition policy was bad in the United States but, New Delhi police say hold my beer.  It uses data with an only 80% match threshold as evidence for potential prosecution.


And Big Data and AI-powered chatbots are enhancing the college experience helping with everything from admissions to recognizing signs of depression.

Brothatech wants to get a new camera to look good on video. He wants something better than a webcam, but, without all the complexity of a DSLR.


Maybe we don’t want ChatGPT speaking in ebonics after all because AI seems to make the same racist decisions based on dialect as humans do.


Police seldom disclose the use of facial recognition when used to identify suspects and often lie about its use in public-facing reports. 


And when you put cameras in glasses, real-time facial recognition was bound to follow.

And the story of the 17-year-old girl and her mother being charged with various crimes after a medication-induced abortion based on evidence from the teenager’s private Facebook messages illustrates just how important it is to absolutely secure your digital footprint.

Apple doesn’t want any supply chain disruption in China over Made in Taiwan labels so it's asking its Taiwanese-based suppliers to add Made in China labeling to their products.


TikTok’s contracted moderators are allegedly requiring employees to watch actual child abuse videos as part of its training program.


Technology exists to determine if a child has been left behind in a locked car to help prevent hot car deaths, but, the battle for years has been to get auto manufacturers to implement it.


And the video social media platform Triller wooed Black creators with the promise of monthly payments and equity in the company, but, slow payments and no payments, according to program participants have been a problem since the program's inception.

30,000 tech workers have lost their jobs through July, but, we still believe Information Technology is, one of, if not the hottest job industries.


Apple Pay could possibly come to Chrome, Edge, and Firefox in iOS 16. We aren’t sure if this is because Apple has seen the light, or, to prepare for looming EU legislation.


Meta and Tik Tok aren’t doing that great with content moderation in the diaspora. The number of tribal languages spoken regionally is problematic for AI detection but they still need to do better.


And people are getting tired of Instagram focusing so much on video. The image-sharing social media platform is trying to turn into Meta’s version of Tik Tok, but, some super high-profile creators aren’t down with the poorly implemented shift.

Senators Corey Booker and Ben Ray Luján propose the UnCap America Act that would ban data caps on consumer high-speed broadband in the U.S.


A chess-playing robot in Russia breaks its seven your old opponent's finger. Reports are that the robot is completely safe, so, long as you don’t move too fast.


Netflix reports on its 2nd quarter earnings. Subscribers are down for the second quarter in a row, but, not by as much as initially thought.


And, should Google buy Snapchat? Things haven’t been great for Snap pretty much since the company went public and Google might need a social media play to combat its core business losses to TikTok and Instagram.

Twitter had a 40+ minute outage, its newsletter service Revue was down for over a day, and some employees are saying there’s no strong leadership at the helm in the wake of Elon Musk reneging on his takeover bid.


Uber settles a lawsuit with the DOJ for overcharging passengers with disabilities.


And Over 600 business leaders teamed up with Code.org to ask state governments and boards of education to add computer science to core curriculums

Rogers Telecommunications in Canada suffered a 19-hour outage last week affecting all kinds of services including cell and landline access, banking services, internet access, 911/emergency services, and more.


A new law in New York will require concealed-carry gun license applicants to hand over their social media accounts for review of their “conduct and character”.


More black investors than your might think own cryptocurrency as an asset class.


And, Elon Musk’s takeover of Twitter has been terminated but the lawsuits and insults are just getting started.

Could Deep Fake Interviews Actually Help Some Folks Get Hired? — The Tech Jawn 4205 Jul 202201:07:37

Google will, soon, start deleting visits to potentially sensitive locations like domestic violence shelters from users' location histories. Search history, however, still remains.


Scammers are using deep fakes to interview and get hired to remote jobs for nefarious reasons. We ponder if this tech, for some folks, could be used to get by the gatekeepers in efforts to really hired.


A robocall loophole that allowed smaller telecom companies to get by STIR/SHAKEN regulations has been closed.


And, the FCC, again, calls for Apple and Google to remove TikTok from their respective app stores. This sparks a great conversation around things creators can do to monetize their content without being completely beholden to social media companies.

Even with all the positive stories of black women getting into I.T., the pay gap between white men and black women Is actually widening. 


Eminent Future and it is black founder and president Isaac Barnes were recently awarded a $13.4 billion defense contract with the U.S. Airforce and the U.S. Spaceforce.


And in a post-Roe America, you got to be careful with and protect your search history, location data, text messages, purchase history, and more because your online profile can be used against you when making healthcare decisions.

And, is Congress finally positioned to do something meaningful on user privacy? A bipartisan draft bill called the American Data Privacy and Protection Act would provide a national standard on what data companies can gather from individuals and how they can use it.

Apple held its WWDC22 Keynote and we recap some of the new hardware and software coming out in the coming months.


Tesla and about 50% of other companies want their employees back in the office 100% of the time, but, many employees are willing to change jobs and even careers to not have to go back to commuting 5 days a week.

AI used in a Northwestern study of police departments is showing that a small percentage of officers own a disproportionate share of the misconduct.


The “Chip Shortage” is actually making the chip shortage worse because chip manufacturers can’t get the chips they need to make the chips we need.


The Amazon union saga is far from over as it fires managers who “didn’t prevent” the Staten Island warehouse from organizing right as that union’s leader meets with the president and appears in front of Congress.


And the fall of Roe v. Wade could have big effects on Big Tech. We discuss some of the ways tech companies are scrambling to protect employees, end-users, and the massive amounts of data it collects.

We probably should have a plan for all of our data, all of our accounts, and all of our financial information to make things easier for the loved ones that we leave behind.


No one really likes them, but, ads in our media, social and traditional, work better than you might think they do.

Elon Musk Was For Real For Real About Twitter: The Tech Jawn 3226 Apr 202201:04:08

Elon Musk secured financing for his $46.5 billion takeover bid of Twitter and Twitter’s board has reconsidered and accepted his offer.


Patreon creates the new “Pull Up” incubator for creators of color and offers resources, training, and funding for marginalized small business owners.


The recently launched CNN+ streaming service calls it quits barely 3 weeks after its debut. 


And, the EU has passed the Digital Services Act which will force big tech companies to take greater responsibility for the content that appears on their platforms and can fine them up to 6% of annual turnover for non-compliance.

Elon Musk and Twitter had a heck of a week.  Musk buys 9.2% of the stock becoming the biggest shareholder, is offered a seat on the board, but turns it down. 


Twitter also announces that it is adding an “Edit” button to the platform.  They’ve been working on it for over a year and the feature will first come to Twitter Blue subscribers.


Dall.E is a neural network AI that can create images from concepts expressed in natural language.  You tell it what to draw, it draws it, and it is actually pretty good at it.


And we interview Afua Bruce, Adjunct Faculty at the Heinz College of Information Systems and Public Policy at Carnegie Mellon University and author of the book “The Tech That Comes Next”.

Elon Musk purchased a 9.2% stake in Twitter becoming the company's biggest individual shareholder.


Apple and Meta shared user personal data with hackers pretending to be law enforcement.


And Amazon workers on Staten Island voted to form a union.

Some new hotness made its way to the Apple Store last Friday.  BrothTech stopped by to pick up a new iPhone 16 Pro Max and the Apple Watch Ultra 2 and today he gives us his first impressions.


The government appears to be taking child online safety more seriously as the  House Committee on Energy and Commerce forwards two bills on to the full House of Representatives.


Section 230 protects online platforms from liability for what users post, but, according to a three-judge panel, not from what platforms recommend. 


And are you using a digital note-taking app on your smartphone?  Chances are, you probably should be.

Proposed EU legislation may require messaging platforms to interoperate, but the bigger issue may be getting the carriers to roll out a standard like RCS.


Is an Apple hardware subscription plan a good thing for consumers?


And Tesla is straight buggin when it comes to racism in the workplace and Google has a new class-action lawsuit to contend with for alleged racist practices.

Facebook locks a bunch of users out of their accounts for not turning on Facebook Protect.  The problem was that Facebook’s email notification looked like a phishing scam which was largely ignored.


The global chip shortage is getting real and it's getting worse.  First it was graphic cards that became impossible to buy.  Now some SUVs are shipping without the chips that control seat warmers.


The toy company that first created transformers is now working on a moon rover, and yes, it actually transforms.


And, is the digital divide literally killing us?  Studies show a link between internet access and Covid-19 deaths.
