| Ep. 150: Jim Barger Jr. Author "Jimmy Carter Rivers And Dreams" | 14 May 2025 | 01:24:40 | |
In this soul-stirring episode of The Storied Outdoors, we welcome Jim Barger Jr.—a nationally recognized trial lawyer, acclaimed author, environmental advocate, and College Professor. But his résumé only scratches the surface of a man whose life is deeply rooted in story, place, and purpose. From his childhood on the coastal shores of St. Simons Island, Georgia, to the literary halls of Ole Miss, Jim’s journey weaves through courtroom battles, conservation efforts, and deeply personal revelations. You may know him from his essays in The Bitter Southerner or as co-author of Jimmy Carter: Rivers & Dreams, a beautiful exploration of Carter’s lesser-known love for fly fishing. But in this episode, Jim opens up about the deeper currents shaping his life—faith, family, and finding peace in a complicated world. 🎣 What shaped his love for the outdoors?🌿 Why did he move his family back to the Georgia coast—and what does he hope to pass on to his sons?📖 What sparked the creation of “Rivers and Dreams,” and how did that journey transform him?🙏 What does it mean to live with “two great loves”—a love for Jesus, and for the person standing right in front of you? Jim doesn’t just talk about the outdoors—he lives out a net-positive lifestyle, using his platform to fight for environmental preservation and cultivate generational legacy. This episode is a quiet invitation to rethink what matters most. And somewhere between the salt marsh and the written word, you'll discover a story about returning—both to a physical place and to a deeper sense of calling. Don’t miss this episode—whether you’re a reader, a father, a fisherman, or someone just searching for deeper clarity in your own story, there’s something here for you. Hit play, and let the tide of Jim Barger Jr.’s story carry you to places you didn’t expect to go. | Ep. 44: Alone in the Dead Marshes: Essay by Dr. Bryan Gill | 04 Apr 2022 | 00:26:07
In this essay, Bryan recalls a frightening night where he was lost in a swamp as a teenager. Reflection and journaling helped him to more fully understand this event and others. Reflection and journaling have been a big part of Bryan’s adulthood and in this essay, he offers insights into the practice of both. We hope you will enjoy this episode entitled, “Alone in the Dead Marshes,” written by Dr. Bryan Gill and read to you by Brad Hill.
“No Man is an Island.” No man is an island entire of itself; every man is a piece of the continent, a part of the main; if a clod be washed away by the sea, Europe is the less, as well as if a promontory were, as well as any manner of thy friends or of thine own were; any man's death diminishes me, because I am involved in mankind. And therefore never send to know for whom the bell tolls; it tolls for thee. John Donne,

Ed Litton is the 63rdt President of the Southern Baptist Convention; more importantly, since 1994, he has Pastored Redemption Church in Saraland, Alabama, faithfully shepherding many, including my in-laws, for many years. Although there is much more we could include in this bio, He is also an avid fly fisherman, photographer, and all-around outdoor adventurer. We cover lots of topics in our conversation with Ed, from such a busy schedule, and how you find rest and sabbath—to navigating the death of his wife of 25 years. As an all-around outdoorsman and lover of adventure, Ed shared with us some photography stories about an incredible picture he was fortunate to capture from the bottom of the Grand Canyon and seeing a white Buffalo. Both Bryan and I love photography, so we geeked out a little on the technical side of how you capture the night sky with your camera and whether you prefer landscape or wildlife. One of our favorite topics on the podcast, if you have listened for any time, is fly fishing. Ed joins us in our love for fly fishing and shares some of his favorite places where he can fish. Idaho continues to come up in our conversations, and Bryan and I feel the call to Idaho to fish, so if you know anyone out there, put us in contact with them. We had such a splendid time getting to know Pastor Ed Litton. Ed shared a photo album filled with photos we talked about, along with some of his favorites, including a few of the beautiful fish he has caught over the years. | Ep. 41: All That Is Gold Does Not Glitter: Essay by Brad Hill | 14 Mar 2022 | 00:34:59
Everybody needs beauty as well as bread, places to play in and pray in, where nature may heal and give strength to body and soul.
-John Muir
In this episode, Brad reflects on beauty and where we find it—looking back at his trip to Wyoming and his weekly experience in Mobile, on Bolton Branch near his office. This essay is chocked full of fishing stories, including a personal best brown trout in an epic place, discovering a gem of a place to fish right in his back yard, and reflections on the idea of beauty.
This sparked some questions for lots of self reflection about looking harder for what perhaps is hidden beauty all around us that we could be missing. The trip out to Wyoming cultivated a healthy reflection on evaluating my schedule and creating more margin for conversation and enough time to be known.
“ There is no place on earth without the potential for unearthing holiness. Right where we are with these people we are with.”- Eugene Peterson

We are fired up to start a fresh season of stories and interviews for the fourth season of The Storied Outdoors. We are joined today by one of our previous guests, Dr. Hugh Cheek who graciously and courageously shared his story of suffering and life with us. This episode serves as an intro for season four, but also recounts their trip to North Georgia and some of their more memorable highs and lows along the way. We recorded this episode on the February 2nd, and in honor of Black History Month, the words of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. kick us off. He said, “The major problem of life is learning how to handle the costly interruptions. The door that slams shut, the plan that got sidetracked, the marriage that failed. Or that lovely poem that didn't get written because someone knocked on the door.” We hope you'll enjoy this episode as we laugh and lament the misadventures of our north Georgia fishing trip.

Kyle Beshears is campus pastor of Mars Hill Church in Mobile, Alabama. He holds a PhD from the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, teaches courses on religion at the University of Mobile, and is author of the recently published "Apatheism: How We Share When They Don't Care." Kyle’s favorite spaces for sabbath are in the cockpit of a kayak and among the peace of woodland trails. We cover a lot of ground in our conversation with Kyle! We talk about his time living in Europe and one particular adventure during a pilgrimage in Spain called “The Camino de Santiago,” where he encountered all manner of Characters and we hear his reflections on this journey. We also spend some time hearing from Kyle about his experiences getting into kayaking in the vast waterways of Mobile, AL and the gulf coast. We end our conversation hearing about Kyles latest book from B&H Publishing entitled “Apatheism.” How can you share the gospel with someone who doesn’t care? As Western culture becomes increasingly indifferent to questions of faith, diverted by secularism, comfort, and distraction, believers encounter many people who don’t so much doubt God as they are apathetic toward him. In Apatheism, Kyle Beshears urges us to recapture the joy of our salvation and demonstrates how to faithfully display the love of Christ to apatheist friends and neighbors. | Ep. 32: Emily Johnson: Artist | 06 Dec 2021 | 00:50:37
When most Alabamians think about Lake Martin as a place to vacation, Emily Johnson thinks of it as home. Growing up on the water and being an artist, Emily naturally gravitated to painting fish. While this was not always her focus, 2020 presented an opportunity to move away from the medical field and pursue a full time career as an artist, an artist who paints fish… and the occasional waterfowl. This episode gives listeners an insight into the process of painting and what inspired her to make this shift. With the help of her husband, an avid fly fisherman, and three young children who are almost old enough for more adventures, Emily hopes to paint all, or at least most, of the fish found in the waterways of Alabama. | Ep. 30: There and Back Again, Chapter 80: Essay By Dr. Bryan Gill | 22 Nov 2021 | 00:38:44
Henry David Thoreau once wrote, “The question is not what you look at, but what you see.” In this essay, Dr. Gill recalls the story of a photography trip he took with his first camera, a Pentax K1000. While this story didn't end the way he had hoped, it was redeemed 25 years later when he had a second chance at photographing a beautiful red fox. Now, when he looks at that fox, he sees much more than the photo, he sees the heartache and joy that that image evokes. The title, "There and Back Again: Chapter 80," is taken from J.R.R. Tolkien's Lord of the Rings. There and Back Again is the title of Bilbo Baggins' memoir that Frodo is tasked to finish. However, Chapter 80 of this red leather covered manuscript is unwritten and that is where one story ends and another begins. Be sure to listen as Brad Hill artfully reads this essay written by Dr. Bryan Gill entitled, "There and Back Again: Chapter 80." A story of three different experiences woven together by three rivers, this episode Brad shares about how his time on these rivers serve as a reminder to the goodness he has experienced. We all need to practice remembrance for when tough times set in, these experiences of goodness serve as monument to help us remember “It won’t always be this hard.” The story tells a small portion of his experience attending Hutchmoot , a conference hosted by the good folks of the Rabbit Room, where he sat next to the Harpeth River in fellowship with new and old friends. The story then journeys to Montana where he officiated a wedding for a young couple from his church, and then how he was fortunate to fly fish on the Flathead river the next day. An incredible string of events all close together and next to rivers. | Ep. 25: Charles Martin: New York Times Best Seller Novelist | 18 Oct 2021 | 00:38:42
We wanted to start this season out with a bang and boy did we! In this episode, we sit down with New York Times Bestselling Author, Charles Martin and discuss writing, bow hunting, and how growing up in the outdoors has helped shape Charles' writing into some of the most vivid and compelling stories in bookstores today. Some of the books Charles has written include: The Mountain Between Us, The Water Keeper, The Letter Keeper, and When Crickets Cry, just to name a few. We dive into a conversation with Charles about the writing process, how it changes you, how difficult it is, and how we are meant for a garden--we are meant to be outside. We also talk about archery and the great organization of Mission Bows by Mathews. Learn more about Mission by Mathews on their website. Here's a little more about Charles from his website- Christy and I married in 1993. If you include dating, I’ve known and loved her for more than half my life. She is and always will be the home for my heart. We have three boys. Charlie, John T. and Rives. Folks often ask me, which of my books do I like the best. You might as well line up my sons and ask me who I love the most. My hobbies are bow hunting, working out (a blend of old school stuff and martial arts, called Fight Fit) and Tae Kwon Do. In October 2012 I earned my black belt but I’m still the least flexible person you’ve ever met. The guy that trains me, laughs every time I start warming up. My boys are far better at Tae Kwon Do than I but I doubt they have as much fun. You can find more of Charles' books at www.charlesmartinbooks.com/books. Welcome to season three of The Storied Outdoors! This episode is a little bit of a hybrid, and not the type of hybrid bass Brad and Bryan caught on the fishing trip down the Tallapoosa River either. This episode is an introduction to season three, a recap of season two, and the retelling of a fishing trip that Brad and Bryan had over the summer with Craig Godwin at East Alabama Fly Fishing. We also talk about the Release of Bryan's first novel, The Devils in Alabama. Heck, these bass even exploded on streamers! If you're looking for a fun trip on pristine waters in the state of Alabama, give these guys a call. They'll treat you right. Not only is Craig a great fishing guide, he is one of the best photographers I've seen. His work is incredible. Check him out here at Craig Godwin Photography. Main character, Drake Tatum is in desperate need of money to pay off a debt he owes, but his measly income as a newspaper intern in Birmingham, Alabama isn't enough. With resignation letter in hand and every intention to seek a job with better pay, his fiery female boss drags him on an assignment to investigate the sudden rise of sports betting halls in the state—a world he knows well from his gambling habit. Fueled by the guilt of a childhood accident and obligated to fund his father’s opioid addiction, Drake's thirst for money sinks him deeper into the sinister underbelly of Alabama. Will he be consumed by the tangled web of illegal gaming, drug trafficking, corrupt politicians, football, and religion? Or will he reconcile the guilt of his past and escape the grip of these devils? The Devils in Alabama is available on Amazon in paperback and on Kindle. | Ep. 22: Ben King: Professional Cyclist and Wildlife Photographer | 10 May 2021 | 00:49:05
“It would seem that Our Lord finds our desires not too strong, but too weak. We are half-hearted creatures, fooling about with drink and sex and ambition when infinite joy is offered us, like an ignorant child who wants to go on making mud pies in a slum because he cannot imagine what is meant by the offer of a holiday at the sea. We are far too easily pleased.”
— C.S. Lewis, The Weight of Glory, and Other Addresses The Virginia born pro cyclist and wildlife photographer Ben King joins us for a conversation to talk all things outdoors and their impact in his life. When Ben isn’t ascending the mountains on the European cycling tours he lives in Italy with his wife and newborn child. He is what Bryan and I call “our people.” Ben loves to hunt and fish, an admitted birder, and gifted photographer. In this episode we cover his experiences in cycling and how the outdoors has been a space for him to slow down from a profession that is always at full speed. Ben reflects on how birding has genuinely driven him to worship. He recognized that the joys of the outdoors are a gift and joy from God but also a foretaste of the feast that is to come. | Ep. 13: Bart Valle: USCG MH-60 Flight Mechanic | 08 Mar 2021 | 00:38:52
In this episode of TSO we are privileged to hear from Petty Officer Bart Valle and his experience flying in the middle of Hurricane Harvey.
When Hurricane Harvey a Category 4 hurricane made landfall on Texas and Louisiana in August 2017, Bart Valle and the USCG were called into action. Harvey released more precipitation than any other tropical cyclone in U.S. History. Making landfall on three separate occasions, Harvey dumped as much as 52 inches of rain on Texas and Louisiana.
Bart and his crew deployed ahead of Harvey’s landfall to make ready for the task at hand. They took off flying into Hurricane Harvey at its peak, battling 45 knot winds, visibilities of less than 1/4 mile, low ceilings, and torrential rains. To make matters more difficult they were flying in an unfamiliar, challenging urban landscape, dodging power lines and tall tress. Bart along with his crew were instrumental in the rescue of 102 souls. We hope you enjoy our conversation with Bart on this episode.
