What if your next gig felt clear before you even picked up the guitar? Steve walks through his complete prep system for tackling a massive score like Jesus Christ Superstar with a small ensemble and tight rehearsal window, turning complexity into confident, musical performance.

We start with bird’s-eye listening to map the architecture of each song—intros, verses, bridges, and drops—so the emotional arc is obvious. Then we zoom into the details: where guitar adds impact, where silence is stronger, and how to balance parts when the score expects an orchestra but the pit is five players. Steve explains how he studies multiple productions, from the original album to the 2017 John Legend staging, to separate essentials from style and shape guitar parts that fit the cast, room, and instrumentation.

From there, it’s practical tools: performance-focused cheat sheets, dynamic markings, and page-turn cues that keep the body ahead of the paper. We talk about fixing bad charts, choosing voicings that leave space for vocals, and creating textures that cover missing horns or keys without clutter. You’ll hear why some riffs must be faithful while others can flex, how to decide which part makes the band sound bigger, and what to practice so transitions, articulations, and tone shifts feel automatic under pressure.

If you’re a guitarist preparing for theater, church, or a cover set, this playbook shows how to think like an arranger while playing like a teammate. You’ll walk away with a repeatable workflow for deep listening, smart part selection, and musical dynamics that elevate every scene. Enjoy the process, serve the song, and make a small band sound huge. If this resonates, subscribe, share the episode with a bandmate, and leave a review with the biggest prep tip you’re stealing.

Five Hidden Practice Mistakes That Hold Guitarists Back30 Oct 202500:13:55

Send Steve a Text Message

Stuck practicing the same riffs and wondering why your playing won’t budge? We dig into the real reasons progress stalls and share a step-by-step way to turn scattered effort into steady gains. This isn’t about buying another pedal or memorizing another scale shape. It’s about practicing with intention, tightening your groove, and building a system that exposes weaknesses, connects skills, and keeps you accountable with honest feedback.

We start by reframing practice. Instead of vague goals like “work on scales,” we zero in on specific, measurable tasks: connect pentatonic positions one and two on the top strings, at a set tempo, for a short, focused block. Then we shift to rhythm and feel. Most players overtrain the fretting hand and undertrain the picking or strumming hand, so we break down subdivision choices, dynamic accents, and pocket control over backing tracks. From there, we get candid about weak spots and how to find them—whether they’re technical, theoretical, or visual—using short drills, tuner-checked bends, metronome grids, and targeted transitions.

We also unpack why learning songs often fails and how to fix it with a three-part model: know the roadmap by ear, own the tools under your fingers, and lock the groove before stitching sections together. Finally, we make the case for regular assessments and constructive feedback to eliminate blind spots, along with a healthier approach to comparison that fuels growth without crushing confidence. By the end, you’ll have a clear framework to focus your sessions, play tighter, and turn practice time into real musical results.

If this resonates, subscribe, share with a guitar friend who needs a nudge, and leave a review with the one habit you’ll change this week.

Thanks for being here!! I will continue to do my best to bring you the best, most informative guitar discussions to help you along your guitar journey!

Strings, Stages, and Smiling: My Guitar Journey21 Aug 202500:17:14

Send Steve a Text Message

What does it really take to build a sustainable career in music while maintaining your sanity and relationships? In this revealing episode, Steve Stine pulls back the curtain on his musical journey and sets the record straight about a common misconception.

"I do not own Guitar Zoom. I have never owned Guitar Zoom," Steve clarifies early in our conversation. Working for Dan Denley's company for 15 years as a content creator has been just one chapter in Steve's multifaceted career. From his first transformative encounter with Kiss's "Love Gun" album as a child to teaching over 100 private students weekly in his twenties, Steve's path has been defined by both passion and overwhelming commitment.

The heart of this episode explores the breaking point that changed everything. While juggling teaching positions at a Montessori school, a rock academy, and a college—plus playing in touring bands—Steve found himself burning out. His wife was "running ragged" managing their daughter's activities while he was perpetually absent. When Guitar Zoom offered him a chance to consolidate his career, Steve made the difficult choice to step away from his numerous commitments. "It was the first time I think I've ever just sat in silence and had a moment of peace," he reflects on that transition.

Now at 55, with a grandchild and decades of experience behind him, Steve has found a delicate balance between his love for playing, teaching, and his commitment to faith and family. His story offers valuable perspective for musicians at any stage who struggle with the tension between creative fulfillment and personal wellbeing. Whether you're starting your musical journey or reconsidering your own work-life balance, Steve's candid reflections provide both inspiration and practical wisdom.

Thanks for being here!! I will continue to do my best to bring you the best, most informative guitar discussions to help you along your guitar journey!

The more you share this podcast with others, the more I can continue to grow this channel and offer the best information and advice I can to you.

The Mysteries of Music Composition: Things You Need to Know with Mika Tyyskä31 Mar 202200:39:41

Send Steve a Text Message

“When you start making a full song, it opens a lot of mysteries that you want to figure out.” - Mika Tyyskä

To be a professional composer, one must have years of training, experience, and a fundamental understanding of music theory. This isn't to say that you can't learn to be a good composer without putting in tens of thousands of hours of work. Anyone can learn to make music, but how far you go depends on your objectives. While some people may compose music without understanding all of the subtleties of the profession, you'll go a lot further if you grasp a few essential abilities.

Want to know the good news? This podcast is made for you!

Our latest guest for today’s episode is Mika Tyyskä. He talks about what he does when he starts composing and you can get some good advice from him! He is a composer, musician, guitarist, and animator. He is best known for his work with animated guitarist Mr. Fastfinger. He released 5 instrumental albums and a bunch of other releases.

He loves to create worlds with sounds and push the boundaries. He kind of approaches guitar playing like an animator. The notes only become music when you make them breathe. In his book; drama, atmosphere, feeling, and storytelling are the most important aspects of music. In addition to making music, he loves to share and teach what he learned along the way.

Tune in to this episode and learn how to develop your skill and ability as a composer!

Exploring Guitar Versatility: Miguel Navarro's Path Across Classical, Tango, and Rock07 Aug 202500:22:07

Send Steve a Text Message

What happens when curiosity meets musical passion? For Miguel Navarro, it sparked a remarkable journey across genres, techniques, and even countries. In this captivating conversation with Steve, Miguel reveals the winding path that brought him from childhood lessons in Chile to becoming a respected instructor at GuitarZoom Academy.

Miguel's story begins with childhood inspiration from a popular puppet show, leading to his first guitar lessons at age eight. The social aspect of learning alongside his best friend created a motivational foundation that would shape his approach to music for years to come. His narrative takes us through his progression from simple open chords to formal conservatory training, where he embraced classical guitar technique and traditional Chilean folk music. The most pivotal moment came when Miguel discovered Argentine tango guitar—a versatile style that combined technical demands with collaborative performance opportunities. This passion ultimately led him to relocate to Buenos Aires, where he completed his musical education in traditional music programs.

What makes Miguel's approach so valuable to students is his unique perspective on teaching. Rather than focusing solely on technique, Miguel views teaching as "accompanying someone's journey"—connecting with students' lives beyond just the musical aspects. His versatility across classical, folk, tango, and rock styles gives him a rare ability to help students find their own unique voice on the instrument. When he names his current influences—tango guitarist Hugo Rivas, acoustic player Jungle Rainhawk, and jazz innovator Julian Lash—we glimpse the eclectic musical mind that makes him such an effective instructor. Whether you're a beginner finding your way around open chords or an advanced player looking to explore new genres, Miguel's multicultural musical journey offers valuable insights for guitarists at any stage of development. Ready to expand your guitar horizons? Listen now and discover how Miguel's diverse experience might transform your playing.

Thanks for being here!! I will continue to do my best to bring you the best, most informative guitar discussions to help you along your guitar journey!

The more you share this podcast with others, the more I can continue to grow this channel and offer the best information and advice I can to you.

Stop Playing Randomly and Start Practicing With Purpose31 Jul 202500:10:57

Send Steve a Text Message

Creating an effective practice routine is essential for guitar progress. Daily and weekly practice structures help overcome the feeling of being lost and ensure you're working on the right things.

• Practice fundamentals daily, focusing on chords that match your ability level and finger size
• Work on each chord independently before practicing transitions between them
• Choose songs that align with the chords you're practicing to create reinforcing learning
• Break song learning into components: chord practice, rhythm work, and understanding structure
• Set up a weekly rotation of skills like new songs, scales, theory, and improvisation
• Balance your practice schedule with flexibility to follow genuine musical interest on any given day
• Distinguish between following inspiration versus avoiding practice out of laziness

If you're struggling with guitar or feel lost when practicing, try developing a structured routine that fits your goals. Inside the GuitarZoom Academy, we'll work with you to create a personalized practice plan and provide ongoing support through daily Zoom interactions.

Honest Feedback Is the Secret Weapon Every Guitarist Needs24 Jul 202500:07:54

Send Steve a Text Message

Have you ever hit a plateau in your guitar playing despite hours of practice? The missing piece might not be more practice videos or tab books, but something far more valuable: honest assessment and feedback.

Steve Stine delves into why receiving quality evaluation of your playing is absolutely essential for guitar progress. Drawing from decades of teaching experience, he explains that without proper assessment, guitarists often develop blind spots—technical issues or inefficient approaches they simply cannot see themselves. As Steve puts it, "You don't know what you don't know," which perfectly captures why external feedback is irreplaceable.

The discussion explores practical aspects of finding the right assessment source, whether through formal lessons or trusted musical friends. Steve emphasizes creating a comfortable environment where you can play without performance anxiety, selecting someone whose opinion comes from a genuine place of wanting to help rather than criticize. He shares his approach to giving constructive feedback—focusing on one or two key areas rather than overwhelming students with a laundry list of corrections, and using the "compliment sandwich" method to keep motivation high while addressing areas for improvement.

Whether you're struggling with picking technique, finger positioning, or playing through complete songs, targeted assessment helps identify the specific adjustments that will make the biggest difference in your playing. Steve invites listeners to explore the GuitarZoom Academy, where personalized assessment and structured guidance create a roadmap to help you achieve your specific guitar goals. Ready to break through your playing barriers? The right feedback might be all you need.

Thanks for being here!! I will continue to do my best to bring you the best, most informative guitar discussions to help you along your guitar journey!

The more you share this podcast with others, the more I can continue to grow this channel and offer the best information and advice I can to you.

Steve
