The STEAM Success Blueprint: Why Not You? — Romeo Mays's Growth and Path to a Career in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation19 Sep 202600:39:02

In this episode of The STEAM Success Blueprint, host David Ferguson( a fourth-year pharmacy student) sits down with Romeo Mays, a fourth-year medical student at PCOM in Philadelphia applying to residency in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. Romeo opens up about growing up in the Bay Area balancing competitive basketball with a science-driven environment shaped by nearby institutions like Stanford and Cal, choosing a Master's in Organizational Leadership over a direct path to medical school, and the imposter syndrome that he encountered. The conversation moves through what "intelligence" really means once memorization stops being enough, how one conversation with a friend turned into a medical-school content platform followed by thousands, and why Romeo believes the biggest thing holding people back is rarely ability , it's exposure. David also previews an early build of his own Bahamian-set chemistry textbook and gets Romeo's live, on-the-spot reaction to it.

In this episode:

  • Growing up in the Bay Area near Stanford and Cal, and how that environment shaped Romeo's dual pursuit of basketball and academic excellence
  • Choosing Dominican University of California for biology, and why chemistry and psychology became his minors
  • The COVID-year decision to pursue a Master's in Organizational Leadership at the University of Redlands instead of heading straight to med school
  • Confronting imposter syndrome in his first two years at PCOM, and redefining what "intelligence" actually means
  • The third-year rotations — OB, family medicine, radiology, surgery — that reconnected him with his reason for pursuing medicine
  • The origin story of his content platform, @romeomaysjr, and the first-generation students it was built for
  • His current focus on sports medicine, adaptive sports, and pediatrics as he applies to PM&R residency
  • A live look at David's in-progress chemistry textbook and Romeo's real-time feedback on it
  • Why "comparison is the thief of joy" and "why not you?" have become two of Romeo's guiding principles

Guest Biography: Romeo Mays, a great young leader, who is a fourth-year medical student at the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine (PCOM), currently applying to residency programs in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. Raised in the Bay Area of Northern California, Romeo earned his Bachelor of Science in Biology from Dominican University of California, with double minors in Chemistry and Psychology, while playing collegiate basketball throughout his undergraduate career. After an extra year of NCAA eligibility granted during the COVID-19 pandemic, he continued playing basketball at the graduate level while earning his Master's degree in Organizational Leadership from the University of Redlands.

A first-generation college graduate now finishing his medical training, Romeo's clinical interests include sports medicine, adaptive sports, and pediatrics, fields that let him draw on his own background as an athlete to help patients regain function, mobility, and confidence. He is also the creator of a widely followed medical school content platform (@romeomaysjr), where he documents his journey through the pre-med and medical school process to demystify it for students , particularly first-generation and underrepresented students , who don't typically have a canonical roadmap of their own to follow.

Outside of medicine, Romeo recharges by hiking near water, playing pickleball, and staying active around his neighborhood , chasing the same discipline outdoors that carried him through his hardest semesters.

An Interview with A Mentor- Dr. Robert Langer, Sc.D. (MIT Institute Professor) on aspects of the Future of Diabetes Medicine Research31 Jul 202600:10:49

An Interview with A Mentor- Dr. Robert Langer, Sc.D. (MIT Institute Professor) on aspects of the Future of Diabetes Medicine Research

======

Diabetes therapy is entering a new phase. For decades, the central challenge was how to deliver insulin more safely, more intelligently, and more responsively.

The research work by Dr. Langer has produced a generation of technologies aimed at making therapy more autonomous: glucose-responsive insulin systems, microneedle patches, implantable rescue devices, lipid nanoparticles, and mRNA-based approaches to protein replacement.

At the same time, a separate revolution emerged from pharmacology. GLP-1 receptor agonists, dual GIP/GLP-1 agonists, and now triple GIP/GLP-1/glucagon agonists have changed expectations for the treatment of type 2 diabetes and obesity.

Oye 4 DC City Council- The Blueprint: Evidence Over "Rearrangements and Vibes" — No “SN1 Rearrangement-like Policies” with Dr. Oye Owolewa, PharmD- Oye 4 DC City Council20 Dec 202500:44:53

Blueprint: Evidence Over "Rearrangements and Vibes" — No “SN1 Rearrangement-like Policies”

Guest: Dr. Oye Owolewa, PharmD

Guest Bio

United Sates Representative Oye Owolewa (D-D.C.) is a dedicated public servant and community advocate committed to uplifting the voices of underserved communities. Elected in 2020 as the U.S. Representative for the District of Columbia, Rep. Owolewa made history as the first Nigerian American elected to Congress. His leadership is rooted in a passion for equity, social justice, and empowering marginalized populations.

Born to Nigerian immigrant parents, Rep. Owolewa grew up in Massachusetts before moving to Washington, D.C., where he earned his Doctorate in Pharmacy from Northeastern University. His background in healthcare has fueled his advocacy for accessible and affordable healthcare, mental health resources, and economic empowerment.

Prior to his role in Congress, Rep. Owolewa actively served his community through various grassroots initiatives. He worked closely with local organizations to provide educational support, mentorship, and resources for D.C. residents. His focus on youth engagement and civic education has inspired young leaders to become active participants in their communities.

In Congress, Rep. Owolewa continues to champion policies that promote racial and economic equity, expand mental health support, and address systemic injustices. He is a strong advocate for D.C. statehood, ensuring that residents of the nation's capital have full representation in Congress. His legislative priorities include economic development, healthcare awareness, and youth empowerment, aiming to create opportunities and resources for all D.C. residents.

With a steadfast commitment to service, Rep. Owolewa remains dedicated to improving the lives of his constituents and building a more inclusive and just society for all.

Episode Summary

What happens when you apply mechanistic thinking—Woodward-level rigor and Percy Julian-level ingenuity—to public policy in Washington, D.C.? In this episode of Blueprint: Inventing the Future, we speak with Dr. Oye Owolewa, PharmD, who is running for DC City Council, exploring how clinical precision and evidence-based reasoning can translate into durable solutions for STEAM education, workforce development, digital equity, mental health, and civic empowerment.

We frame D.C. governance like an organic synthesis problem: stabilize intermediates, control reaction conditions, eliminate “side reactions,” and design for yield—so opportunity is not theoretical, but repeatable.

"From BMES to the States: Excellence, Athletics, and Building Bridges Across Cultures"- A Conversation with Antonio Smith, A Longstanding Highschool Friend and Quality Control Leader

---

Episode Description:

Join me for a cool conversation with one of my closest friends, Antonio Smith, as we dive deep into a journey that spans two countries, multiple sports, and the pursuit of excellence that started at Bishop Michael Eldon School in Freeport

Antonio made the bold decision to leave one of the Bahamas' top schools in his senior year to pursue opportunities in Tallahassee, Florida. From competing in three sports at James S. Richards High School to building a successful career as a Quality Control Team Lead at KUS, his story embodies the resilience and work ethic that elite Bahamian education instills.

We explore the cultural bridges between the Bahamas and the United States, the challenges of maintaining community connections while building a new life abroad, and the entrepreneurial spirit that led him to co-found a shopping and shipping company serving the Bahamian diaspora. This conversation touches on athletics, education, career development, cultural identity, and the ongoing connection to home that shapes the immigrant experience.

Whether you're interested in Caribbean education systems, the student-athlete experience, quality control leadership, or the dynamics of diaspora communities, this episode offers authentic insights from someone who has successfully navigated multiple worlds while maintaining his roots.

Topics Covered:

  • Elite Bahamian education and its impact on character development
  • Student-athlete transitions between Caribbean and American systems
  • Career progression from physical education studies to quality control leadership
  • Entrepreneurship within diaspora communities
  • Maintaining cultural identity while adapting to new environments
  • The realities of building a life between two countries

From Lab Bench to Bedside: Cardiolipin Science Saves Lives- The Significant Connection between D.J. Ferguson's Master's Thesis and Forzinity's Recent Approval

----

On September 19, 2025, the FDA granted accelerated approval to FORZINITY™ (elamipretide), a groundbreaking new drug for Barth syndrome—an ultra-rare genetic disorder affecting only about 150 people in the United States. On the surface, it's a monumental victory for a small but desperate community. But what if this victory is also a critical clue, a key that could unlock a new frontier in the fight against some of the world's most widespread neurological diseases?

This approval marks the first-ever therapy specifically targeting mitochondria, the powerhouses of our cells. The implications are staggering, potentially paving the way for new approaches to treating conditions like Alzheimer's and Parkinson's, where mitochondrial dysfunction is a known culprit.

Join us as we unravel this historic first, exploring the intricate science and the decade-long journey of perseverance that led to this moment.

In this episode, we explore:

  • The World of Barth Syndrome: We define this devastating and ultra-rare genetic disease, understanding its profound impact on patients and the cellular machinery it disrupts.

  • The Unsung Hero of Our Cells: A deep dive into the science of mitochondria and a crucial molecule you’ve likely never heard of—cardiolipin. Learn why this unique phospholipid is the linchpin of cellular energy and structural integrity.

  • A Targeted Therapy: Discover how FORZINITY™ (elamipretide) works by directly interacting with and stabilizing cardiolipin, restoring function at the very source of the problem.

  • The Road to Approval: We chart the high-stakes, dramatic journey of Stealth BioTherapeutics, from a major FDA rejection to a strategic pivot that secured a historic accelerated approval.

  • The Broader Horizon: We connect the dots from Barth syndrome to neurodegeneration, exploring the mounting evidence that links cardiolipin dysfunction to the pathology of Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease, and what this breakthrough means for the future of medicine.

The Path to KOLs--Ukranian Episode: Шлях до KOL: Наука, Лідерство та Сила Малих Кроків (The Path to KOL: Science, Leadership, and the Power of Small Steps)11 Sep 202500:49:52

The Path to KOLs--Ukranian Episode: Шлях до KOL: Наука, Лідерство та Сила Малих Кроків (The Path to KOL: Science, Leadership, and the Power of Small Steps)

To anyone navigating a difficult season, remember that the shadows are proof of the light. Your journey is not about seeing the end from the beginning, but about bravely taking that next step. In moments of trial, we often find our greatest opportunities. Welcome to The Path to KOL, the student-led podcast empowering clinical pharmacy students, residency aspirants & rising clinicians. Each episode features global thought leaders—Chancellor Gary May; Dr Robert Langer; Greg Zuckerman (The Wall Street Journal); Kyle Woumn (Forbes 30 Under 30)—sharing insights on breakthrough research, leadership, innovation & purpose-driven pharmacy careers.Let the challenges you face fuel your resolve. As St. Augustine wrote, "Hope has two beautiful daughters; their names are Anger and Courage. Anger at the way things are, and Courage to see that they do not remain as they are."
