  • What were your best and worst decisions?
  • What didn’t you accomplish that you wish you had?
  • What was the biggest lesson you learned this year?

It’s not important to know all of the answers, but to at least spend some time considering them. Then, you can charge into the new year having learnt from the past, ready to conquer 2023...

Episode 102: Is it Better to be Liked or Respected at Work?15 Nov 202200:08:44

When I was an entry level junior at the bottom of the career ladder, everyone liked me, and I’m sure you remember those days too! But as you begin to progress and take more senior positions, that popularity may be compromised.

We all wish we could be both respected and liked at work, but is often tricky and, given the choice, wouldn’t you rather be respected as a boss than liked?

In this episode I explain why being the push-over boss may not always be a good thing, and run through some questions you can ask yourself if you’re not sure, including:

  • So your employees listen when you speak?
  • Do they meet the deadlines you set?
  • Do you let boundaries get blurred?

Remember, you cannot please everyone all the time. As a boss and a leader, you cannot be liked by everyone, and that’s ok! Focus on winning the respect of your peers, and the rest will follow.

Here are the highlights from this episode:

(00:46) You can’t have both

(02:53) You need to set boundaries

Episode 101: How to Avoid Resting Zoom Face08 Nov 202200:05:44

Do you remember a time, before the pandemic, when meetings were held face-to-face? When working from home was the exception, not the rule? And when you couldn’t attend a meeting in your slacks or PJs?

We are now living in an age of virtual meetings, where Zoom (or your conferencing platform of choice) is the norm, so it’s important to make the best impression!

In this episode, I share some top tips to avoid the dreaded resting Zoom face, including:

  • Look engaged – a concentration face can look like resting Zoom face!
  • Look up at the camera rather than down.
  • Avoid the eye-rolls as your meeting may be recorded.

So when you’re having Zoom meetings, ask yourself what small tweaks you can make to improve how you present your virtual self.

Here are the highlights from this episode:

Episode 98: You Might Hear Me, But Are You Really Listening?18 Oct 202200:07:51

Most of us probably never think about our listening style but, as the saying goes, we have one mouth and two ears for a reason.

Listening is an important part of engaging with and understanding our friends and colleagues, and you won’t get very far in business if you do not understand what type of listener you are.

So whether you’re a critical listener or a relational one, understanding your style and sharpening your listening skills are vital to career success. In this episode I share some ways you can do this, such as:

  • Ask yourself ‘why am I listening to this?’
  • Who is the conversation really about?
  • How can I help?

Whatever type of listener you are, become great at it and you will build strong relationships in both business and life. Because it is only when you learn how to listen that you will truly know what someone is saying.

Episode 88: How Much is Too Much to Sacrifice at Work?09 Aug 202200:05:53

Where is your line in the sand?

We all have limits, and it’s important for you to know yours. Those who don’t can often agree to things they don’t feel comfortable doing, and that can lead to unhappiness or dissatisfaction at work. But if you don’t know where your line is, and what your non-negotiables are, how can you know if it’s being crossed?

In this episode I reveal the strategies I share with my own executive coaching clients when they need to speak up for their non-negotiables, including:

  • Getting clear on what you want.
  • Aligning your non-negotiables with your values.
  • Setting expectations with others.

Once you know where your boundaries in the workplace are, you’ll be more confident speaking up when you need to.

Episode 87: Empathy is a Superpower to Use at Work02 Aug 202200:05:35

Being called sensitive or emotional as a child often came with negative connotations, and is generally seen as a bad quality to bring to the workplace. I’m here to tell you how wrong that is.

Being ‘sensitive’ can also mean you’re empathetic, compassionate and understanding, which are critical traits of any successful leader.

In this episode I explain how you can use empathy as a superpower to accelerate your career, including:

  • It makes you better at forming connections with colleagues and clients.
  • You can celebrate others’ successes.
  • You know how to give and receive feedback.

Empathy does not come naturally to everyone. If you have it, use it like the superpower it is and start levelling up your career now!

We all have a dream career, but getting there is not easy. Trust me, I know from experience! But as the old proverb goes, as one door closes another one opens.

In this episode I give you some top tips to put yourself in the perfect position for your next career opportunity, including:

Ep 201: What To Do When You Don’t “Got This”08 Oct 202400:10:31

In this episode, I’m excited to share a story that hit close to home, straight from my seven-year-old son, Jake. As we were rushing around getting ready for school, I gave him a little pep talk, saying, “You got this!” But to my surprise, he looked at me and said, “Mama, I don’t got this.”

His honesty was a wake-up call about how important it is to ask for help when we need it—something we, as adults, often struggle with. That moment inspired me to reflect on how we, too, can be more open and honest about when we’re feeling overwhelmed.

Today, I’ll explore the strategies I’ve learned from my son’s openness and how they can apply to all of us. I’ll talk about how we can better recognize when we need support, the importance of asking for help early, and how to empower ourselves and others through honest communication.

If you’ve ever felt like you “don’t got this,” this episode is for you!

(4:45) The Importance of Asking for Help
(5:19) Strategies for Asking for Help

Episode 83: No Decision is the Worst Decision - How to Beat Indecisiveness05 Jul 202200:07:04

Do you sometimes struggle to make decisions?

In researching this episode, one of my team quoted a lyrics from the song Freewill by Canadian band Rush: if you choose not to decide, you still have made a choice.

By not making a decision, at best you’re giving someone else permission to make it for you, and at worst you’re missing out on opportunities which could enhance your career.

In this episode I share my top strategies to help you make better, quicker decisions, such as:

  • Write down the pros and cons.
  • Asked your support network for advice.
  • The more you delay, the harder it gets.
