What Speakers Can Learn from FBI Negotiators – A Masterclass with Chris Voss - 32506 Nov 202501:08:13

Chris Voss was the FBI's lead international hostage negotiator… but these days, he's helping CEOs, speakers, and sales pros negotiate million-pound deals, win high-stakes conversations, and get results — without pushing, pitching, or people-pleasing.

In this episode of The Speaking Club, I'm joined by the author of Never Split the Difference to explore how you can use his real-world-tested negotiation techniques to build trust fast, shift resistant clients into action, and speak with more power and presence.

And yes — I even used one of his own tactics to get him to say "yes" to coming on the show!
Whether you're trying to book more speaking gigs, close better clients, or simply influence with integrity — this one's packed with actionable diamonds!

What you'll discover:

  • How Chris Voss went from SWAT and undercover ops to suicide hotlines and high-stakes hostage negotiation — and why it made him one of the world's top communication experts.
  • What compelled Chris to share his FBI-developed negotiation system with the world instead of retiring into the sunset — and how that decision shaped Never Split the Difference.
  • The one negotiation tactic that sounds great on paper… but can actually backfire, and what to do instead.
  • Chris's ride-or-die technique — the one negotiation move he'd keep if all others were off the table.
  • The common "influence" move that actually kills deals faster than anything — and what to replace it with.
  • How Chris would handle a client who's stalling on a deadline or payment — and the exact question he'd use to move them into action.
  • The subtle ways Chris reads and influences a room when he's speaking — and how his FBI experience shapes his delivery and timing.
  • Why "labelling the room" during a talk can deepen audience connection — and how to read silent resistance and adjust in the moment.
  • What the concept of the "Black Swan" means for public speaking — and how spotting the right insight can completely change your impact.
  • How to make your audience feel in control (even if you're the one guiding them) — and why that's the secret to ethical influence and increased action.
  • Why "Yes is nothing without how" — and how to use this principle in your calls to action so that people actually follow through after your talk.

Enjoy!

What it Takes to Win Hearts, Minds, and Speaking Awards with Adele Bates - 32411 Oct 202501:17:14

I first came across Adele Bates when I was judging the Storytelling category at the Speaker Awards—and her talk really stood out and grabbed my attention.

It was powerful, authentic, challenging and captivating.

She didn't just tell the story. She performed it. Her talk built drama and connected emotionally to the audience, leading you to see a new perspective.

Based on that performance and the fact that she went on to win the award for best storyteller, I knew I had to get her on the show.

Not only did I want her to unpack the craft behind that talk, but I also wanted to dig into the powerful work she's doing at the intersection of education, leadership, and human behaviour.

Adele has over 20 years' experience working in some of the most challenging educational environments—mainstream, special, and alternative provision. Her journey has taken her from classrooms where she's had juice poured over her head and skateboards hurled at her… to research trips across the globe… to keynote stages and international recognition.

She is the author of "Miss, I Don't Give A Sh*t: Engaging with Challenging Behaviour in Schools. And today she and her team also work with organisations and leaders to tackle challenging dynamics in the workplace.

Whether you're a speaker, leader, educator or changemaker, Adele's stories and insights will challenge your thinking, stir your empathy, and give you practical tools for connection and communication.

What You'll Discover:

  • What triggered Adele to set off on a quest to discover a different way of approaching dealing with challenging behaviour.
  • The key values that guide Adele's work with both students and corporate leaders.
  • How to hold high expectations and compassion without burning out.
  • The real disconnect between behaviour policies and lived experience in schools.
  • The surprise career Adele had before she became a teacher and how she made the transition from educator to paid keynote speaker.
  • The big mistake she made with a speaking client that she would never make again.
  • Why it doesn't matter if you are introverted or extroverted to be successful as a speaker.
  • How she developed the award-winning storytelling section of her talk.
  • The single piece of feedback that transformed her speaking presence.

Struggling with Speaking Nerves? Turn Anxiety into Confidence with Heather Lillico - 31507 Mar 202501:01:43

My guest today is Heather Lillico. I was so inspired by an article I read from Heather on the Tiny Buddha website, where she outed herself as a nutritionist who out of the limelight was actually struggling with an eating disorder, that I was curious to find out more.

What I discovered is that her journey of managing and mastering anxiety is not only inspiring, but could really help those of you who are struggling to manage anxiety around speaking.

I know so many speakers and aspiring speakers struggle with this and it can really sabotage results, or worse get in the way of you getting started in the first place.

Heather is a Holistic Nutritionist, Yoga & Meditation Teacher, and Anxiety Warrior. She teaches anxious, people-pleasing perfectionists how to step into a more confident version of themselves with a natural & holistic approach.

She is the creator of the anxiety support app, Cultivating Calm, and believes we can all make mental space for what really matters.

Heather's been through the trenches and come out stronger, and in this episode, she's sharing the real, practical tools you need to stop letting fear run the show.

We dive into:

  • Why anxiety is more than just a feeling—and what it's really trying to tell you
  • The surprising link between what you eat and how confident you feel on stage
  • A simple mindset shift that can turn anxiety into excitement
  • A powerful technique to calm those pre-stage jitters in seconds
  • The biggest mistake speakers make that actually fuels their fear (and what to do instead)
  • Why waiting for 'confidence' before you act is a losing game

Enjoy!

The Confidence Catch 22 for Using Stories and Humour in Speaking - 22426 May 202200:15:35
If you want your talks to stand out, inspire, entertain and be more memorable, then you need to use stories and humour.

Getting the right stories together and crafting appropriate jokes are the first thing you need to get right, but that doesn't guarantee things will go the way you want. That's because there is another issue that I see tripping people up in this area, and often they're not even aware that they're doing it.

That's what I want to cover today.

I'm going to share exactly what this problem is and also show you what you need to do to stop it from sabotaging your success.

Enjoy!

What you'll learn:

  • Why you should consider using stories and humour in your talks.
  • What you need to think about when choosing your material.
  • The trap that many speakers fall into when using stories and humour in their talks.
  • How you can influence the audience reaction to your talk by the way that you're thinking about it.
  • Why you could be teaching your audience not to laugh and what to do instead..
  • The connection point between an analogy and your message and why it needs to be strongly made.

And more!!

[Insights] on Better Networking, Follow Up Conversations, and Connecting Strategically - 22212 May 202201:00:01
In this episode I've pulled together insights from four powerhouse networkers, and each of them is an expert in creating value and building relationships. What they share will make sure you grow your network powerfully and authentically, so that your business or career prospers and you make some great friends along the way.

Devora Zack has carved out a reputation as a networking guru, and what she has to share about authentic networking is valid whether you're doing it online or eyeball to eyeball.

She's been featured in many publications and media such as the Wall Street Journal, Forbes, USA Today, Women's Health and Fast Company - to name but a few!

Stefan Thomas believes that putting effort into building and sustaining relationships at scale, over time, has benefits for every person, whether they own their own business, work for a company, or do a mixture of both. The trouble is that as Stefan says:

"What most people think networking is, and what it actually is, are two very different things."

Peter Beaumont has led the marketing teams for some of the most iconic global brands, in a career spanning over 80 countries. In that time he figured out the secret to managing and building strategic business relationships, and now he speaks and consults with other companies using his six step process to help them develop more powerful connections and take things to the next level.

Brandon Fong learned lessons at a young age from his parents that enabled him to master three of the most important skills that an entrepreneur needs for success. At 22 using those skills he made a connection that would change his life. He has continued to build on those skills and today he is on the journey to his own seven figure business and is helping entrepreneurs use his 'Magic Connection' method to develop relationships that will change their lives too.

Enjoy!

What you'll discover:

Devora:

  • Four great tips for getting the most out of a networking event.
  • Why you should follow up and what to consider in your follow-up to increase the chances of them saying yes.
  • How to avoid the traps that damage rapport.
  • Addressing the balance of speaking and listening in networking conversations.

Stefan:

  • Whether you should always agree to 121 follow ups.
  • Getting the balance right in 121 conversations between asking versus telling.
  • Why you should take advantage of longer speaking slots in networking meetings.
  • Why storytelling is important for successful networking and marketing.

Peter:

  • How to define the key relationships you need to influence and develop.
  • The important ingredients for developing strategic partnerships.
  • How you know if you're doing 'human to human' business relationships right.

Brandon:

  • The 'Ikea effect' and how you can use this principle to add value to people who are more successful than you.
  • The slipstream technique and how you can use it to accelerate your success.
  • Brandon's 'Magic Connection' method and the three ingredients for success.
  • The benefits of 'no' oriented questions and how to use them.
  • An example of an email using Brandon's 'magic connection' method, which helped him change his life at 22.

The Story of the Early Warning System that Could Save Your Life with Verla Fortier - 22105 May 202201:05:58

With a Master's in Health Science, Verla Fortier is a former Director of Surgery at The Toronto Hospitals in Toronto, Ontario and a retired Associate Professor of Nursing at McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada.

She is also a returning guest to The Speaking Club, and she is back because she has written a new book that I believe will save lives.

In episode 88, her first interview with me, she shared her own story of what happened when she was diagnosed with systemic lupus just a few days before she was due to retire to her hometown of Manitoba.

That led to her writing her first book, 'Take Back Your Outside Mindset', creating a podcast, and becoming a speaker and expert about green space. If you haven't heard that interview then do have a listen.

At around the same time she received her lupus diagnosis, Verla's lifelong friend Lesley, died of a sudden cardiac arrest on a three day road trip. Verla couldn't understand why it happened, because Lesley had been a healthy woman.

The mystery surrounding Lesley's passing stopped Verla from being able to accept and grieve the passing of her best friend. It haunted her so much that as soon as she was strong enough, she set out to solve it.

Her latest book is the result of that investigation, and what Verla discovered about what happened to her friend on that road trip is shocking.

Enjoy!

What you'll discover:

  • Why Verla felt compelled to write this book.
  • How Verla unraveled the mystery of her best friend's death.
  • Verla's thoughts on why conventional medicine so far behind in relation to this research.
  • What your heart variability measurement is and how it can act as an early warning system for ill health and save lives.
  • Some of the myths and mistakes around managing your heart health that are putting people at risk.
  • How to look after your heart if you live in a city
  • Why you need to take more responsibility for protecting your heart.
  • How going outside for just three minutes a day can make you more sexy.
  • How Verla is planning to use speaking to get the message out there.

Leading Successful Change Through Storytelling - 22028 Apr 202200:19:10
So many organisations struggle to implement change effectively. Certainly in my many years of being involved in projects and big change programmes, I rarely saw one that didn't overrun, exceed the budget and lose employee goodwill along the way. It wasn't until I left the corporate world and trained in marketing, sales and influencing that I understood why it happened so often, and how to proactively dismantle the barriers and obstacles that get in the way.

So … in this show I want to answer two questions for you:

  1. Why are most organisations crap at effecting change?
  2. How can stories help leaders to make change happen successfully?

And just so that we're on the same page … to me successful change means minimal deviation from plan and budget, minimal disruption and minimal loss of employee goodwill.

Enjoy!

What you'll learn:

  • Why most organisations struggle to implement change successfully
  • The Star Trek story that illustrates why change is hard.
  • Why I fell out of love with the 80's Highlander film and how that can help you win hearts and minds.
  • The map for a story led change talk
  • How to use that map to create your talk
  • Why you should pay extra attention to the questions you get asked by your audience
  • The three different groups you will find in every change scenario.
  • Why you don't need to be creative to use stories in your talks

And more!!

Tips for Creating a Talk and Using Speaking to Get More Book Sales - 21921 Apr 202200:21:15
If you listened to episode 218 of the show you will have heard me talking to AnnMarie Wyncoll, who helps people write and publish their books.

But one thing that AnnMarie was very clear on was that once the book is written whether you're with a publishing company or self-publishing - the marketing and promotion of that book pretty much rests with you.

You probably won't be surprised to hear that speaking is one of the most effective ways to build an audience and make more book sales.

But you don't often get specific advice about what to put in the talk and how to adapt it for the multiple speaking mediums that you can use to get your message out there.

That's where this episode comes in.

Enjoy!

What you'll learn:

  • Why you need to spend time creating a talk about your book
  • The ingredients that need to be in the talk about your book
  • Ideas for creating your book promotion campaign
  • How you can adapt that talk for different platforms
  • Tips for making the pitch to talk

How You Can Share Your Passion and Purpose on the Page with AnnMarie Wyncoll - 21814 Apr 202201:15:32
Have you got a story to tell?

Do you have a big message to share?

Perhaps you should consider writing a book.

Just like a great talk, a book is a fantastic way to bring that message or story alive for people and in a way that you can scale… as long as it's done in the right way.

But there are many potential traps waiting to slow you down, or stop you from getting the book finished and out into the world, that's where this show can help.

My guest AnnMarie Wyncoll is an author and founder of Begin a Book. Her desire to become an author was born when she had an epiphany about her life with a toilet brush in her hand.

Unfortunately, her journey was fraught with obstacles to overcome, but she didn't give up and eventually she held her first book in her hands.

Today, through her company Begin a Book, she makes the book creation process stress free and easy for other aspiring authors.

In this show, she will be sharing how to avoid the pitfalls of publishing and she'll also be giving you some brilliant advice to make sure your book has the best chance of reaching the people who need to read it.

Enjoy!

What you'll discover:

  • What a toilet brush moment is and what caused AnnMarie to have hers.
  • What made her switch from being a part-time author to launching a book company.
  • The people who AnnMarie thinks shouldn't write a book.
  • The three big traps people can fall into on the book creation journey.
  • The three things AnnMarie had wished she'd known before she wrote and published her first book.
  • What's better - self-publishing or working with a publishing company.
  • How you should tackle talking about real people.
  • How you should handle quotes in books.
  • The best ways to go about promoting your book once you have it.
  • How AnnMarie uses speaking in her business.

[Insights] Using Your Voice in Public Speaking with Jay Miller, Helen Langford, Kristin Linklater and Sarah Archer - 21707 Apr 202200:44:15
Your voice is one of the most neglected, yet most important tools you have as a public speaker.  Your ability to be heard clearly, to last out the talk energetically, and to connect powerfully with the emotions of your audience are all reliant on your voice. That's why for the first of the insights episodes, I have pulled together highlights from some of the best voice artists and teachers to help you ensure that you are looking after and fully utilising this incredible instrument.

First up, joining me on the show is Jay Miller. Jay has spent the last 20 years training speakers, actors and business people how to develop a great voice, as well as overcome anxiety around public speaking. He is now one of Canada's finest voice and speech coaches, appearing across the Canadian media, and his work has had a profound effect, not only on building compelling and engaging voices, but also on the lives of those people that work with him.

Helen Langford is a voice actor, who absolutely loves the sound of her own voice … and so do lots of others. She works for many corporate clients, including household names, and every day she tells stories, explains tricky concepts, promotes brilliant ideas and gets to be somebody new!

Kristin Linklater has sadly passed away since recording the original interview, which makes what she shares even more precious. She had a long and distinguished career as a teacher and actor in Europe and America, working with some of the most prestigious theatre companies and dramatic institutions in the world. She also wrote one of the seminal books on voice technique based on hearing 'the person, not the voice

I hope it gives you a few ahas and helps you to have more impact when you speak.

Enjoy!

What you'll learn:

  • My view on whether speakers should use slides
  • What the 'Tinder Swindler' and 'Inventing Anna' can teach us about using slides.
  • What a visual anchor is and how to use them when you talk.
  • Myths around slide use
  • Alternatives to using slides

Why You Should Always Lead with Emotion in Your Speaking and How to Do it - 21418 Mar 202200:15:10

It's no secret that telling stories is the single most powerful tool you can have in your speaking and marketing. But not all stories are created equal.  There are some that are simply a series of events pulled together into a narrative arc that certainly meet the definition of a 'story'.

And then, there are the others …

… the stories that get into your head and your heart and cause you to feel something… maybe anger, hope or laughter.

And that makes you want to share them, and then that story becomes your story.

So, what is it that sets these two types of stories apart?

Emotion.

Emotional stories win attention, keep your audience GLUED, and take  them on a journey, but the big question is how do you make a story emotional?

That's what you'll discover in this episode!

Enjoy!

What you'll learn:

The tools of emotion

Where you should use them

How to turn emotion into a burning platform for action

Why you should lead with emotion

How you can create emotion even when the subject matter seems very dry.

And lots more!!

How to Ensure Your Message Lands When You're Speaking to an International Audience with Shelley Purchon - 21310 Mar 202201:12:27
For 20 years Shelley Purchon taught people from all over the world to improve their English. Then she decided to turn the tables. She now helps English speakers to adjust the way that THEY communicate, so that people who didn't grow up with English as a mother tongue can understand them more easily.

Shelley learned the hard way how it feels to try to understand a foreign language when she moved to Spain in her twenties. Seven years later she moved back to the UK and taught refugees. She began to notice that although her students could understand her, they were struggling to understand other English people.

She realised that most native English Speakers just didn't know how to adjust their speech for a person who wasn't fluent in English.

In 2018 Shelley set up English Unlocked to tackle this problem.

In this episode, she shares some great tips for individuals and organisations, so that you can make your message equally engaging for everyone you're speaking to, no matter how good their English is.

If you have international clients and colleagues, or if English isn't your first language, you are going to love this episode.

Enjoy!

What you'll learn:

  • Shelley's own experience as a non-native living in Spain.
  • The epiphany she had that started her on the journey to starting her company.
  • Why someone who speaks fluently in your language may still struggle to integrate seamlessly into your business.
  • Why being a native speaker could be costing you sales and business opportunities.
  • The challenges that Shelley has faced in getting people to pay attention to this problem and how she overcame them.
  • The three biggest benefits for an individual or organisation of modifying their language.
  • The biggest mistakes people make when they speak to non-native speakers.
  • Tips that will make all the difference to engaging non-native speakers.
  • Whether it's still possible to effectively use metaphors, analogies, stories and humour when you're speaking to an international audience.
  • What Shelley has noticed about the way I can communicate better on the podcast.

Best of: Universal Themes & Story Plots for Powerful Public Speaking & Marketing Content - 21124 Feb 202200:30:12
Chances are all the films you love, all the books you devour, have pulled you in because you can relate not only to the character and their journey, but to the underlying messages that apply universally to all human beings.

There are recurring symbols and motifs weaved into the fabric of stories from 'The Three Little Pigs' to 'Harry Potter', that signal, repeat and reinforce the themes that writers from Shakespeare to Quentin Tarantino use to draw us in and deliver a moral takeaway.

Speakers and copy writers can also use universal themes and the tools of symbols and motifs in stories and more widely in their content to hook the audience, keep them engaged and get them to remember the core message and action points.

In this 'best of' show re-run, I'm going to share what I know about universal themes and story plots, and some examples of how you can use them practically in your public speaking and marketing content.

Enjoy!

What this episode covers:

  • What universal themes and basic story plots are
  • Why they are important in stories, speaking, and marketing copy
  • The different types of universal themes
  •  How symbols and motifs reinforce universal themes and what they are
  • The options for story plots
  •  How you might use them in your speaking and in business.

In this show I'm going to be sharing an important distinction you need to make when you're creating your talk. This is something that comes up regularly when I'm working with people on their signature talks, because it's an easy trap to fall into.

The problem is that if you don't recognise and address this distinction, you could invest time and money to produce a talk that doesn't get you results. And we don't want that!

So, if you want to be sure your talk (and indeed) marketing hits the right target and helps you make a difference and grow your business, then listen on.

Enjoy!

What you'll discover:

  • The fundamental mistake many speakers are making that will be costing them sales.
  • The big distinction you need to make in order to sell when you speak
  • Why every talk needs to sell

How to Deliver a Magical Audience Experience and Get Booked More with Lee Warren - 31318 Feb 202500:51:13

I saw Lee Warren speak at the Professional Speaking Association summit and he was one of the star turns of the event. The theme was standing out, and his talk was aimed at helping speakers to do exactly that, for the right reasons.

Lee was a magician by night and a sales director by day before he fell into professional speaking. That was 15 years ago and he has been speaking consistently since then using his background in sales, performance, and psychology to help audiences at global brands to become more compelling, confident and connected.

He is also the author of the award-winning book 'The Busy Person's Guide To Great Presenting', and is visiting faculty at The University of Oxford. If that wasn't enough he is also a Fellow of the Professional Speaking Association, and a recipient of the UK's highest award for Professional Public Speaking - The Hall of Fame Professional Speaking Award of Excellence.

In this show I wanted Lee to share the inside track on what it takes to get going, to stand out and stay at the top of your game as a professional speaker. He didn't disappoint. The tips and advice you get from Lee in this show are worth their weight in gold and I know that your speaking will level up if you put them into action.

What you'll discover:

  • How Lee got into magic and how it's influenced his approach to speaking.
  • How he got his first paid speaking gig.
  • The big lesson from magic that separates the great speakers from the amateurs.
  • How his content and delivery have evolved over his speaking career and why.
  • The distinction between different types of speakers, trainers and workshop facilitators
  • How Lee tailors his keynotes for different audiences across different industries without reinventing the wheel every time.
  • Some of the mistakes that people make when transitioning from free to paid gigs and how to avoid them.
  • Lee's tips for building a strong paid speaking pipeline.
  • How the landscape of paid public speaking changed since Lee started in the industry and how speakers can make sure they stay relevant going forward.
  • Why reading some of the great works of fiction can level up your speaking.

Enjoy!

As more people recognise speaking as the powerful marketing tool that it is, the number of aspiring speakers has grown exponentially. This means that competition for speaking gigs is incredibly high. So if you're a speaker or business owner wanting to build your brand and audience any ideas that can help to give you the edge are really valuable.

That's one of the two compelling reasons I asked Ben Bennett to come on my show. Firstly, Ben has developed a strategy for getting more speaking opportunities and secondly he is also a sales expert and business coach who wants to change the way sales is seen.

Ben has been in sales for many years and today he works with small business owners and startup founders to enable them to understand the power of selling in order to take control of growing their customer base, consistently. Founder of Second Voice, Ben is also a mentor to the NatWest accelerator programme and host of the South Coast Sellers Club.

Why You Should PAT Your Audience! - 20223 Dec 202100:22:54

I'm a strong believer that structure and systems actually set you free and enable you to be creative (even if you think you aren't). That's why I've developed processes and frameworks to underpin my speaking and marketing courses, programs and coaching.

In this pre-christmas show, I want to give you the gift of one of my favorite business storytelling frameworks, which I've seen get brilliant results for people time and time again in various ways.

I know it will help you too, especially if you come up against any of these issues:

You struggle to come up with ideas for your 'lives' or videos.

You feel awkward starting and ending your stories.

You start to speak about one thing and then get lost or distracted and that throws you off.

You're scared to do a video or 'live' partly because you haven't got a clue how to structure it.

You have stories to share, but you don't know how to make them relevant for your audience and the problem you solve for people.

You go on too long and lose yourself let alone the audience.

I hope you enjoy the episode and have fun Patting your audience with it!

What you'll discover:

  • What a PAT is.
  • The many different ways you can use it.
  • How a PAT makes it easy to remember what you want to say.
  • Some examples of a PAT in action.
  • How one story can create many PATs.
  • How to take your PATs to the next level.

And lots more!!

How to Make the Most of Speaking Opportunities Whilst Staying True to You with Kaye King - 20009 Dec 202100:38:02

In this show I'm celebrating 200 episodes by sharing a case study interview.

Speaking to an audience offers so many benefits, including building your brand and authority and helping you stand out from the crowd, whether that's in a corporate environment or as a business owner.

So, when Kaye King was offered the chance to do a 45 minute keynote talk to an audience of 80 of her dream customers, she recognised the big opportunity it offered to share her mission, make a difference and grow her business.

Kaye King works in the niche of marketing, a really competitive space, and she wanted to make sure that her talk not only engaged her audience, but showed how different her approach and message was from other marketing coaches. She also wanted to use the talk to make an offer to the audience but in a way that was true to her values and didn't feel sleazy or uncomfortable for her or the audience.

In this case study interview Kaye shares what she did to make sure she made the most of this speaking opportunity and what happened as a result.

Enjoy!

What you'll discover:

  • Kaye's biggest challenges in putting the talk together including her fear of introducing an offer to her audience.
  • How Kaye was measuring success in advance of the speaking event.
  • How Kaye previously put her talks together.
  • What Kaye did differently to make sure she maximized the opportunity the talk offered.
  • The importance of having a structure for your talk.
  • The big message Kaye wanted to get across and how spending time to identify that helped her build her content.
  • Why Kaye got external help for her messaging for the audience even though she is a marketing expert.
  • The preparation timeline Kaye set out for the talk.
  • The ROI Kaye got on her investment including the specific results she got in terms of sales and feedback.
  • Why most corporate presentations break the biggest rule of a great talk.

And lots more!!

The Biggest Barrier to Fulfilling Your Speaking Potential - 19825 Nov 202100:27:55

In this show, I'm talking about one of the biggest reasons speaking is ranked higher than death in people's fears.

I became consciously aware of this thing in my early forties, and it's something I've struggled with all through my life, and still do today. The trouble is that I'm not alone. This is a struggle I see affecting so many people, and in a lot of ways it's worse now than ever before.

The trouble is that no matter how 'polished' and accomplished you are, your impact will always be diminished if this barrier gets between you and your audience.

What is it, and how can you get rid of it?

That's what this episode is all about.

Enjoy!

What you'll discover:

  • The big problem.
  • The six ways this problem can negatively impact your speaking.
  • Why perspective doesn't just help painters.
  • How to turn your biggest enemy into an ally.
  • The Serenity prayer and how it can help your speaking.

And lots more!!

The Art and Science of Successful Conversations - 19611 Nov 202100:16:29

You've probably heard many people share the importance of building networks and relationships in business.

You may also have heard myself and some of my guests talk about treating your speaking and marketing like a conversation.

The trouble is that 'just having a conversation' is easier said than done, and there are a number of things that can get in the way of us being good at this.

First of all there's the lessons we had drummed into us as children - things like 'don't talk to strangers' and 'it's rude to ask too many questions'.

Then there's our own insecurities around whether we've got anything interesting to say or ask people.

Finally, there's the feeling that it all seems so manufactured.

All of this can make having great conversations challenging, and that's why I put this show together. I'm going to take you through the art and science of good conversation so that you can get better at this critical aspect of speaking and marketing.

Enjoy!

What you'll discover:

  • The Victorian conversation aid that's still relevant today.
  • How your subconscious can scupper great conversations
  • What Ted Lasso can teach you about connecting with people.
  • When it's the right time to share about your stuff.
  • The conversational mistakes that many people make
  • Tips for starting conversations with strangers.
  • And lots more!!

Storytelling. The Long and Short of It - 19428 Oct 202100:16:38

There is no doubt that stories are the most powerful vehicle for getting your audience to buy in emotionally to your message. BUT you have a limited amount of time to get your story across before their attention starts to wander.

Even TV, movies or books that you have chosen to engage with, have a finite time to grab your attention, before you switch off, and in the world of speaking and marketing, that window of time is even smaller.

In this show, I'm going to be sharing the what and the why of tiny stories that pack a big punch, so that you can make sure you're not missing your opportunity to make your message land.

Enjoy!

What you'll discover:

  • The urban myth that started a tiny story trend.
  • Why you need to blend micro stories into your speaking and marketing toolbox.
  • How you can pull all triggers for attention in just a few words.
  • Examples of tiny stories.
  • The steps to creating a tiny story.
  • The difference between micro stories and snackable stories

And lots more!!

Why We Need to Treat Our Audience Like Ebenezer Scrooge - 18923 Sep 202100:15:23

As you know I believe that speaking is marketing, it's an opportunity to influence and inspire an audience to make a change.

But getting anyone to shift perspective and do something differently is as challenging as getting a river to alter its course.

For most of us the status quo is more comfortable and subconsciously feels 'safer', even if it isn't leading us to where we say we want to go. So … when you only have a short amount of time with your audience, how can you possibly motivate them to take action?

That's what this show is all about. I'm going to be sharing the dynamics of change with you, so that you understand what levers you need to pull, and then I'm going to show you how to move them in the direction you want to go.

Enjoy!

What you'll discover:

  • The dynamics of change.
  • Why time is our friend in influencing change and what we can learn from Charles Dickens.
  • How this strategy works even if there is no tangible evidence for making a change.
  • The critical ingredients for making this strategy work.
  • What next?

Best Of: The 4 Steps to Framework Success in Your Public Speaking - 18709 Sep 202100:18:12

Have you got a framework that pulls your IP together and makes your idea, product or service more memorable?

I believe if you haven't - you should!

Recently, something happened with one of my mastermind members that brought the content of this episode to mind.

She had been stuck with her messaging and content - yes, she was moving forward but it felt like she was wading through treacle, rather than being inspired, energised and motivated.

Then a conversation happened at a networking meeting which helped her to identify a framework for the process she takes her clients through.

Suddenly the clouds parted and this is what she said …

"This framework could then form the basis of all my conversations … I have to say it's got me all fired up!"

So, if you're lacking in motivation around your messaging, perhaps creating or refreshing your framework might help!

What's also important is when you find it, you share it in the best way, and that's why I've dug this episode out of the archives for you.

Enjoy!

What this episode covers:

  • Why frameworks are important
  • How to make your audience engage with the framework before you even share it with them
  • How the same teaching framework will enable you to flex your talk to fill five minutes or five hours!
  • When you should stay at the strategy level and why.
  • The one thing you should always do with your framework to get your audience motivated to implement what you're sharing.

Why You Need A Signature Sign Off - 18525 Aug 202100:15:41

One of the things that is critical to success in business and speaking is building your brand.

And a big trap that many people fall into, is failing to share how they add value in a way that makes their brand and message memorable.

The problem is that if you're not memorable then you won't be recommended or referred, and if people forget who you are they can't look you up.

That's why a great 'signature sign off' is something I recommend all my clients and students to craft, so that they minimise the risk of being forgotten.

But, there are some important things to get right and pitfalls to avoid when you're putting this together, and that's where this show comes in.

Enjoy!

What you'll discover:

  • The number one mistake people make when introducing themselves.
  • The three ingredients you need in your signature sign off and why.
  • Why you need to become synonymous with the problem you solve.
  • The power of imagery in making your message sticky.
  • How to pique their interest.
  • Why you need to build a community around your take on the problem.
  • The parting shot and why it needs to be meaningful.

Level Up Your Lives With These Nine Tips - 18312 Aug 202100:24:30

For many the choice between swimming in shark infested waters or going live on social media is a tough one. But because it can play such a powerful role in building your brand, authority and following more and more people are, (often reluctantly), going live.

The trouble is that whilst there is absolutely merit in going live regularly to get through the fear and build your confidence, the content produced when you're 'having a go' can often be dull as dishwater.

If you're going to take the plunge, and do some live speaking on social media, there is no reason you can't do it well from the start.

That's where this show and my nine tips come in.

These tips will form a kind of 'essentials checklist' for you to follow, so that you can be confident that your 'lives' are moving you and your audience forward on the journey towards working together.

Enjoy!

What you'll discover:

  • How to be more strategic with your lives, so that they are actively moving your business forward.
  • Why you must be specifically intentional with each 'live' you do.
  • Why you need to be 'one and done'.
  • The optimum length for 'lives'.
  • The technical stuff you must nail.
  • Branding and background matters
  • How to ensure you deliver like a pro.
  • What JK Rowling can teach you about Facebook lives.
  • How to become the most powerful person in the world.

Enjoy!
