English Fluency: 3 Types of Speaking Practice You Actually Need09 Sep 202600:15:59

English fluency can feel easy in one conversation and difficult in another. You may answer simple questions easily, then lose your train of thought when you need to speak for several minutes.

Or perhaps you speak clearly one-to-one, but struggle to join a fast-moving group discussion.

Your English level did not suddenly change. The speaking situation changed.

In this episode, you'll learn what English fluency really means and why different speaking situations require different skills.

We'll look at three types of speaking:

  • everyday exchanges, where you need to listen and respond quickly
  • speaking at length, when you tell a story, explain a problem, give an update, or share an opinion
  • group discussions, where you need to follow several speakers and find the right moment to join

You'll also think about your own speaking practice. Which of these three situations is most difficult for you right now? Your answer can help you decide what kind of speaking practice you need next.

Should You Stop Saying "Very" in English? No. Here's Why.02 Sep 202600:17:28

You've probably heard this advice: stop saying very in English. Use stronger words instead. In this episode, I'll tell you why the answer is no.

Words like very, really, so, and super are called intensifiers. They make an idea stronger, and native speakers use them every day.

So let's talk about how these words are different from words like exhausted, hectic, and furious. Plus, how to choose the word that says what you mean, and how "not very" can make a negative comment softer.

English Confidence Is a Choice | A Real English Conversation with Anna26 Aug 202600:24:30

Is confidence in English something you have or something you choose? In this real English conversation, my guest Anna and I talk about the myths vs reality of confidence in speaking another language.

Anna and I are both strong introverts, so we also talk about how personality shapes the way we speak, plus...

We chat about the book Happy Mind, Happy Life by Dr. Rangan Chatterjee, which Anna recommended for our Confident Women Community Book Club; my decision to leave social media (thanks to the book she recommended); and toxic positivity.

Like any real-life conversation, the topics evolve, with starts and stops along the way.

Anna has been a member of my Confident Women Community since 2022. If you'd like to get the same kind of speaking practice and support that has helped Anna gain confidence, you can do that here: https://www.speakconfidentenglish.com/community

Build Social Fluency in English Through Authentic Small Talk19 Aug 202600:11:15

A coworker says, "I'm already on my third cup of coffee, and it's not even ten." You understand every word. But what do you say next?

That small moment is an invitation, and knowing what to do with it is the start of social fluency in English: the ability to join the everyday conversations that help people get to know you, and help you get to know them.

In this lesson, you'll learn how to recognize when someone is opening the door to small talk, a simple way to respond (show you heard them, then ask one simple question), and how to tell whether the conversation is continuing or naturally ending.

Then you'll get one small, low-pressure way to practice this week, in a moment where nothing important depends on the outcome.

How to Tell a Story in English: 3 Past Tenses for Storytelling12 Aug 202600:13:06

You know what happened. You remember every detail. But when you tell a story in English, it can be hard to show when each thing happened.

In this lesson, you'll learn how to use 3 past tenses to tell one clear story. The past simple tells your listener what happened next. The past continuous shows what was happening when something else happened. And the past perfect explains what had happened earlier, like the phone you forgot to charge the night before.

At the end, you'll practice with a short story from your own life, in just 4 to 6 sentences.

How to Have Deeper Conversations in English: Ask Better Questions05 Aug 202600:13:23

Think of someone you'd like to know better. Maybe a neighbor, or another parent at your child's school. You've talked a few times, but the conversation never goes past simple facts. In this lesson, you'll learn how to ask better questions in English so your conversations can go deeper.

You'll learn how to listen for one detail and use it to form your next question. You'll learn what makes a question better when you want to know someone. You'll also get phrases like "I remember you said..." to return to a topic the next time you talk, and simple ways to ask without putting pressure on anyone.

At the end, I'll guide you to form one follow-up question for a real person in your life, so you can use this lesson right away.

From Feeling Stressed to Enjoying English | A Real English Conversation with Chih-shian29 Jul 202600:23:11

Do you feel stressed in English conversations? Do you prepare everything you want to say before you speak, and still worry about mistakes? My guest this month did that for years. Today she enjoys her conversations in English. In this real English conversation, she shares the simple mindset shift that helped her: communication over perfection.

My guest is Chih-shian. I've known her for almost 4 years, since she joined my Confident Women Community in the summer of 2022. She's from Taiwan and works in academia, with a busy schedule of lectures, conferences, and travel. And she still makes time for English every week.

Along the way, we talk about childhood memories, a green onion cold remedy, her 8 days in Oxford, and why neither of us has read Harry Potter.

This conversation is unscripted, the way friends talk. You'll hear easy moments and small mistakes. Sometimes we pause and search for a word. That's normal. It happens in every real conversation. I want you to hear what English confidence really sounds like.

Chih-shian built her confidence by practicing English with other women every month, in a safe and friendly space. That space is the Confident Women Community. You can join us here: https://www.speakconfidentenglish.com/community/

Use "For Now" to Explain Complicated Situations in English15 Jul 202600:14:35

Two little words help you explain a complicated situation in English: for now. In this episode, you'll learn how to say what is true right now, without telling the whole story.

You'll hear the difference between "for now" and "for the time being," and when each one sounds natural. You'll learn how to use "for the moment" for a current feeling or decision. And you'll get the professional phrase "at this time," so you can name a limitation at work without giving extra details. At the end, there's a short practice prompt, so you can use one of these phrases about your own life today.

Describe Winter and Summer in English: Beyond Hot and Cold08 Jul 202600:16:36

Cold isn't just cold. Sometimes it feels crisp and fresh, and sometimes it feels bitter and painful. In this lesson, you'll learn how to describe winter and summer in English with 24 specific words, so you can say what each season really looks like and feels like, at its best and at its worst.

You'll learn words like blanketed, frosty, and bracing for winter, and lush, balmy, and sweltering for summer. You'll hear why crisp does not feel the same as bitter, and why balmy does not feel the same as muggy. You'll also get two useful collocations: in the dead of winter and in the height of summer.

At the end, there's a quick practice: choose three words from the lesson and use them to describe the weather where you are right now.

Why You Should Talk About the Weather in English (Even If It Feels Pointless)01 Jul 202600:18:20

Talking about the weather in English can seem boring and pointless, right? But what if it's actually one of the easiest ways to feel more joy and connection in your day?

In this episode, you'll learn what common weather phrases really mean, even when the words are simple and the meaning is not. You'll hear what to say when someone asks, "Cold enough for you?" or complains, "I'm so over this rain." You'll also learn why some weather comments are little jokes that mean the opposite, and how to respond without sounding flat or saying too much. And I share the surprising science behind why this kind of small talk can help you feel happier and less alone.

At the end, I give you a simple challenge: make one small weather comment in a real conversation this week, and notice how often it comes up. It's a good one to listen to on a walk or your commute.

A Real English Conversation about Speaking Up with Sima24 Jun 202600:20:13

What does English confidence really sound like?

In this first episode of Confident English Conversations, I sit down with Sima, a member of my Confident Women Community since January 2024.

Sima is from India and has lived in California for 19 years. In our conversation, she shares what has helped her feel more calm and confident when she speaks English — especially through regular practice with other women in a safe, friendly space.

We talk about life in California, helicopter parenting, and one topic that became especially meaningful for her: how to disagree in English while staying polite, honest, and true to your values.

You'll also hear what real conversation sounds like: easy moments, small mistakes, laughter, uncertainty, pauses, and searching for words. That's normal. It happens in every real conversation.

Confident English Conversations is a monthly series where I sit down with women I know and talk in English, the way friends do. My hope is that you hear what English confidence can sound like — not perfect English, but real connection.

If you'd like to practice English with other women in a safe, friendly space, join us inside the Confident Women Community: https://www.speakconfidentenglish.com/community/

How to Talk About the Past in English: Share Your Life Stories17 Jun 202600:17:14

Do you want to talk about your past in English? There are three easy ways to do it: used to, would, and the past simple. Each one is a little different. This lesson shows you when to use each one.

"Used to" tells people that something has changed. "Would" brings an old routine back to life. And the past simple, with words like always and every summer, tells the simple facts. I'll also show you the most common mistake people make with "would." At the end, I share four things that make a memory feel warm and real when you tell it.

Then it's your turn. Try telling a short story about a childhood memory. Listen on a walk or in the car, and say one story out loud before you finish.

How to Talk About Feelings in English: Belonging, Trust, and Connection10 Jun 202600:18:42

There's a feeling that says, "Yes, this is my place. These are my people." And there's the opposite, when everyone is kind to you but you're still standing on the outside of the conversation. This lesson is about how to talk about feelings like these in English: belonging, trust, connection, and what it's like to be left out.

Here's what you'll learn:

You'll get the phrases English speakers use to welcome someone in, like to make room at the table and to bring someone in. You'll learn the language of trust, including to let your guard down and to let someone in. And you'll get the words for the other side of the experience, when you feel shut out: to be on the outside looking in, to freeze someone out, to give someone the cold shoulder, and to put your walls up.

Near the end, I'll give you a moment to stop and think about your own life: where you feel like you're on the inside, and whose circle you're in.

At the Grocery Store in English: Phrases You'll Actually Use03 Jun 202600:15:13

The grocery store is one of the first places you have to speak when you live in or travel to an English-speaking country, and it can feel stressful. This lesson gives you the real phrases people actually use at the grocery store in English, from making your list to asking for help to checking out.

You'll learn natural ways to talk about what you're running low on and need to stock up on, how to ask someone to grab or pick up a few things, the casual phrases for inside the store (it's packed, it's dead, that's a rip-off, that's a steal), how to ask for help without feeling awkward, and exactly what to say to the cashier at checkout.

And because knowing the words isn't the same as saying them out loud, here's a simple way to start practicing so these phrases feel natural, not memorized. ➡️ My free training, Say What You Want in English: [link]. Full written lesson: speakconfidentenglish.com/grocery-store-english-phrases/

Handle Interruptions in English — The Best Ways to Respond13 May 202600:20:23

Have you ever been interrupted in English and frozen, lost your thought, or felt like you couldn't get your turn back? Knowing what to say when someone interrupts you in English depends entirely on what kind of interruption is happening.

In this episode, you'll get five specific responses matched to five different situations. Some interruptions are collaborative and show active listening. Some are confused and need clarification. And some are blatant attempts to talk over you. Each one calls for a different response, and most advice on interruptions misses that completely.

You'll learn:

  • How to tell which kind of interruption you're dealing with
  • What to say to acknowledge enthusiasm and still finish your thought
  • How to clarify and continue when someone is confused
  • How to hold your turn calmly when someone tries to talk over you
  • How to address a persistent interrupter directly
  • Two simple strategies to prevent being interrupted in the first place

Plus you'll get specific phrases to practice, so the next time it happens — in a meeting, a presentation, or a conversation with a friend — you know exactly what to say.

Polite English Phrases for Daily Life: Ask Someone to Move06 May 202600:10:36

"Please move." It sounds polite. It isn't. Even "excuse me, please move" still comes across as a command in English. So what do native speakers actually say when someone is standing in your way at the grocery store, sitting too close on the bus, or blocking the hallway?

In this episode, you'll learn the polite English phrases for daily life that turn a demand into a real request; the small words and phrases that most English courses never teach.

You'll learn:

▪️ How to ask someone to scoot over or slide down when you need a little more space
▪️ How to politely squeeze past or slip past someone blocking your path
▪️ How to reach across or around someone without it feeling intrusive
▪️ When to use "sorry" and when to use "excuse me"

Each phrase comes with real-life examples — on the subway, in a hallway, at a busy meeting — plus a chance to practice using them yourself.

Episode Timestamps:

Fear of Speaking English? Here's What to Do29 Apr 202600:30:26

You've studied English for years, and the fear of speaking is still there. The fear of freezing in the moment, of making a mistake, of not being understood. And the truth is, more studying isn't going to fix it.

In this episode, you'll learn why the fear of speaking English is physiological, not a sign that your English isn't good enough. You'll find out what's actually happening in your brain when your mind goes blank, why perfectionism quietly keeps you stuck at a lower level than your real ability, and the difference between a skill gap and a trust gap (and how to know which one is yours).

You'll also get a simple record, evaluate, and pivot practice you can do anywhere, even between meetings or on your commute. It only takes a few minutes and gives your brain real evidence that your English works.

Sound More Expressive in English | Humor and Hyperbole15 Apr 202600:13:39

Think about feeling tired after working 9 hours, answering 47 emails, and sitting in traffic for 1 hour after work. You could go home and say, "I'm really tired." But is that what you would say in your native language? Probably not.

My guess is there would be a fun way to express yourself in a more intense way, showing your strong feelings at the moment.

That's what this is about. How to be more expressive in English. English speakers exaggerate constantly, and it's one of the biggest reasons their conversations feel warm, even slightly funny.

To do that, we use hyperbole. And once you understand how it works, you'll start hearing it everywhere. And you'll have the words to do it yourself.

You Understand English But Can't Speak Fluently — Here's Why18 Feb 202600:25:11

You understand English, but speaking still doesn't feel fluent? If you've studied for years and still can't speak English fluently when it matters, this episode will help you understand why, and how to start changing it.

A lot of English learners can follow meetings, podcasts, and videos, but speaking feels different. Speaking is real-time. You have to find words fast, build sentences, and keep going even when you're nervous. That skill doesn't grow from understanding alone. It grows from the right kind of practice.

In this episode, I explain 4 reasons you can understand English but can't speak fluently:

  1. You believe you need to study more before you can speak

  2. You believe confidence should come first

  3. You believe you're too busy to practice

  4. You believe you need a native speaker to practice with

As you listen, you'll get simple practice steps you can use this week to start building your English fluency.

Speak English with Power: Tips on How Stop Sounding Nervous21 Jan 202600:21:40

You can speak English with power and credibility, even if you feel nervous inside.
This lesson shows you how to keep nerves from showing in your voice, so you sound confident and in control.

If you want to speak English with authority and inspire trust but notice your voice shaking, speeding up, or rising at the end of sentences, this video will help. You'll learn how to adjust your breathing, pace, posture, and intonation so your voice sounds calm and confident, even when you don't feel perfectly calm.

This doesn't mean you never feel nervous. Nervousness is normal, especially in high-stakes conversations like job interviews or presentations.

Instead, this is about changing the habits that make nervousness audible, so your voice supports what you're saying instead of working against you.

This lesson will help you:

  • Stop the shakiness that makes you sound uncertain

  • Use pauses that make you sound thoughtful (not lost)

  • Sound calm and in control (even when your heart is racing)

  • Stop sounding like you're asking a question when you're making a statement

  • Practice in a way that actually shows you're improving

Next step:
To practice this even more, watch How to Group Words and Pause for Natural-Sounding English.
It will help you slow down, breathe, and sound more confident when you speak.

If you're listening and thinking, "This makes sense, but I know these habits will be hard to change on my own," that's exactly what we work on inside Fluency School.

It's my in-depth speaking program where you practice voice control, pacing, and confidence in real conversations—with feedback and support.

American English Intonation | Reduce Interruptions & Send Clear Messages14 Jan 202600:19:19

American English intonation helps your listener understand what you mean in real time. It signals things like: "I'm asking a question," "I'm not finished," "I'm building to a point," or "I'm open to your input."

So if you've ever been interrupted mid-sentence, asked a question and gotten silence, or felt like your message didn't land even when your grammar was correct, this episode will help.

We're focusing on rising intonation — one of the clearest parts of English intonation for turn taking, clarity, and connection.

In this lesson, you'll learn:

  • what prosody is (stress and rhythm + pitch in English + intonation)

  • what rising intonation is and what it signals

  • how to hold the floor and stop interruptions when you're explaining or listing ideas

  • how to ask yes/no questions with question intonation that invites a response

  • how to clarify in English naturally (repeat, confirm, check understanding)

  • how rising intonation can soften polite requests and open dialogue

  • when rising intonation becomes upspeak, and how to avoid upspeak so you sound confident and credible

This is one of the most useful pronunciation tips for American pronunciation because it helps you speak clearly, sound natural, and reduce misunderstandings.

How to Talk About Your Priorities in English | Real-Life Conversations17 Dec 202500:19:55

When someone asks why you made a change, said no, or chose a different direction, it can be hard to explain yourself clearly in English.

Learn Advanced English Vocabulary with Mel Robbins' "Let Them"20 Aug 202500:23:00

Learn English vocabulary with me in this must-know English vocabulary lesson inspired by Mel Robbins' Let Them Theory. In this episode, you'll improve English vocabulary, discover advanced English phrases for daily life, and build English fluency with words that help you speak naturally and confidently.

Most English lessons give you lists of words that are correct but rarely used in real conversations. That's not fluency.

Here's why these phrases matter:

  • You'll recognize the words real people use in everyday English conversations.

  • You'll understand the cultural meaning behind them so you don't miss what's happening.

  • And you'll practice them in context so they come to you naturally, without translation or hesitation.

✨ What you'll hear in this episode:

  • Essential English words and idioms from Mel Robbins' Let Them Theory

  • Everyday English expressions like "drop the oars" and "strike a nerve"

  • Why learning cultural context helps you speak English fluently
