The South has a rich hunting culture with deep roots.  It's vital that we preserve our heritage and rich history of whitetail hunting.  This week Mark breaks down how he has introduced his kids and effectively killed deer with them on the stand.  

From remaining quiet to tracking and skinning Mark covers every aspect.  Make it fun and exciting and kids will have fun and be excited to see and drag out deer.  Remember, one day we'll be old and will need our then grown children to help load deer, plant food plots and set up stands.  Thanks for listening.

This week on Southern Ground Hunting we're talking with David Miller of West Virginia. We don't get the opportunity to talk about land management too often. Public land hunting really doesn't give a hunter the opportunity to do much in terms of land management. However, this week we're changing it up and covering David Miller's strategies for whitetail land management in mountain country. 

The southeast is scattered with hills and hollers, with parts of Alabama, Tennessee, Georgia and North & South Carolina having legitimate mountains. One thing that landowners in these areas continuously talk about is the lack of ability to really cultivate those properties to grow giant whitetails. Whether it's bad soil, lack of sunlight, or just difficult to get planting equipment in there, there's a lot of reasons for this. This results in lack of nutrients and creates very nomadic deer movement. You may get mature bucks passing through, but they're going to be on the move. David tells us about the things he does to ensure that a buck has everything they need year round to live on his properties, and it's easier than you might think!

This isn't your everyday trail camera conversation. If you're a deer hunter, chances are you own one or several trail cams. If we're being honest most hunters really don't know how to use them effectively. Sure, you may get a picture of a big buck occasionally, but is it really teaching you anything other than the fact that he's in the area? This week we're joined by Jordan Pope who recently killed an 8.5 year old public land stud in Alabama. Jordan talks about how began narrowing down this buck's movements in the big woods and ultimately killed him in the late season. 

The conversation is still on-going as far as where we personally draw the line on cell cams. It seems as though the art of woodsmanship can be lost when depending so heavily on new technology, however, Jordan explains the thought processes he uses when selecting the location of each camera and woodsmanship and understand deer behavior seems to still be at the top of his priorities. Whatever your thoughts on this, you can not deny how incredible this story is and the journey he experienced.

As deer season comes to a close in most states, Parker, Drew & Adam decide to discuss some of the season highlights... and low points. This is a fireside type convo with no real agenda, but the guys do chase a few rabbit trails. Drew tells us the story of his "urban" hunt that is so Alabama it hurts. Absolutely hilarious! The words "Observation Sits" get thrown around a lot, but for a lot of us patience isn't our greatest virtue. We talk a lot about being aggressive, and there's definitely a time and place for that. However, sometimes it pays off to know where you should be throwing aggressive moves at. Jace Allen joins us this week to discuss how much more efficient you can be by throwing a couple of sits in an area just to observe what the deer are doing before going in guns blazing and potentially blowing out an entire area. Jace had an incredible season and he attributes his success to being mobile and having the ability to play it safe when necessary, and go in for a kill with confidence knowing exactly how big bucks are moving. 

Now, it's important to note that Jace is from Missouri and much of what he talks about in the conversation revolves around having destination food sources like crops. This chat turns into a brainstorming session in parts where Parker and Adam try to draw parallels that can be taken from Jace's situation and applied to someone hunting down in the south.

Public land deer hunting is a different ball game especially when talking about being in the southeast. It's nice to get lucky on a big buck ever once in awhile, but we all have to admit that the memories that are burned into our minds are those bucks that we really had to work for. The fellas from The Whitetail Experience seem to have a good grasp on what it means to finally connect on one of these #hardearnedbucks. It's easy to get stuck in your head when you've been grinding all season long and have just felt like nothing's going to come together. This was definitely the case for Parker this season. Normally, he's at least had some good encounters with bucks during the Alabama bow season, if not tagged a couple. The 2021 season just wasn't going as planned. One thing that all hunters say is "It just takes one second for your whole season to turn around". Well, that was the case for Parker.

Us southerners often wear a chip on our shoulders when it comes to deer hunting. Matthew and Parker both share stories of their recent successful hunts on thermal hubs, both describing how they set up and how the bucks presented a shot. Thermal hubs can be one of the most difficult terrain features to hunt effectively. Wind and thermals tend to be tough to understand, especially in these "magic holes" as Matthew calls them. The guys go over, in detail, how the hunts played out, and why they think they were able to put bucks on the ground.

Us southern fellers like to wear a chip on our shoulder when it comes to deer hunting. You've probably heard, "If you can kill a buck in ______, you can kill one anywhere". Well sometimes you just need a big ol slice of humble pie, and that's what we got! 

Scooter Barnwell of South Carolina joins the show this week to recap the recent trip to Kentucky to hunt big woods bucks in the pre-rut. Out of about 15 guys in camp, not one tag was filled. We're talking about a camp that has some of the best public land whitetail hunters we know. It was a huge struggle! However, Scooter was in the top percentage of hunters in camp in his buck encounters. We just wanted to pick his brain on how he was breaking down areas during a time when bucks just aren't as daylight active as they will be the first week of November. We talk about big sign (scrapes and rubs), how deer used the topography, and what food sources they seemed to be keyed in on. 

Ultimately we came back licking our wounds, but what good would it do us to not try to learn something while we were there?

This week on SGH we're talking with Land Smathers from Mississippi. Land is a very successful public land hunter and rarely ever leaves the ground to do it. Hunting from the ground has some challenges that we hope Land can help us overcome, however, he also talks about the many benefits that you get from not hunting from an elevated position. 

We get it. Sometimes being elevated is necessary. We're die hard saddle hunters and will not be changing that aspect in the near future, but when you open up to the possibility of hunting without carrying in all of the gear associated with climbing...well you've walked into the apex of mobile hunting. As Land mentions, ground hunting is a "tale as old as time". From the dawn of creation, hunters have been killing animals without being in a tree. Hopefully this episode will broaden your horizon and open up new realms of possibilities for getting on public land bucks wherever you may be.

On the Southern Ground Hunting podcast we really want to be an example of applying tactics that we have heard from our guests and sharing the outcomes. This season will be no different. Perhaps one of the greatest tactics for the months of September and October is finding where the acorns are dropping and which trees the deer are hitting the hardest. We couldn't think of anyone better to talk on the subject than Mr. Warren Womack. Warren has been a popular guest on our Local Legends series, but as the seasons start getting underway, this is a subject that you'll want to freshen up on. Mr. Womack goes into depth on his scout/hunt strategies, even stating that he believes the best way to hunt is to utilize in season scouting. "All acorns aren't the same", he says as he explains his process for setting up on what he believes are the preferred trees.

Parker is recapping his trip to North Dakota in this week's SGH episode. In previous episodes, you may have heard him talk about this hunt, and how it was different from his normal hunt. He was invited to hunt on a leased property with our friends from Tethrd, which was a preset stand with bait piles type of hunt. That's not wrong, it's legal, but it's still not our normal public land grind that we enjoy so much. Parker talks about the challenges of trying to set in a preset spot, and how hard it is sometimes to be patient and wait, instead of going out and trying to make something happen. 

As the week progressed, and minimal deer were being seen, he made a move to hunt public land and ultimately was successful on the last day. We hope you enjoy this episode!

Southern Ground Hunting is moving north for this week's episode with a special guest, Mark Kenyon. If you don't know Mark, get out from under that rock you're living under. Mark is a part of the Meateater team and host Wired To Hunt podcast. As we move into the super early whitetail openers across the US, Mark and Parker decided to talk about hunting strategies and tactics for some of these states. Mark has hunted several different early September opener states through the years and has had a good amount of success doing it. In this episode we discuss hunting public land bucks in states like Idaho, Kentucky, North Dakota, Wyoming and a few others. This is a really good podcast to get the ball rolling, especially for someone from the south who just thinks "It's too far, too expensive, or there's no good public land early season opportunities". This week's episode of the Southern Ground Hunting podcast was a blast to record. It always amazes us when we get to talk public land deer hunting with people who, even though they live in the south, their way of hunting looks incredibly different. South Florida is a land where deer hunting simply isn't for the faint of heart. Everything in the woods seems like it wants to eat you! However, the guys from team Swamp N Stomp just pull up their big boy britches and get to work. One crazy thing about south Florida is the fact that their main rut begins in July and August. While most of us are still watching velvet bucks on trail cameras, the south Florida bucks are already hard horned and ready to find a hot doe. This week we're talking with Mark and Danny about how they break down their public land areas and consistently find bucks when the deer density is typically pretty low. How do you find a food source? Back by popular demand, Southern Ground is kicking off the Local Legends series. This week we're talking with an absolute legendary deer killing machine, Jim Forbes. Jim has been hunting the mountains of Virginia for his whole life and has learned things that have upped his odds in the deer woods. Like so many local legends we've talked to in the past, Jim makes it clear that he's not hunting deer, he's hunting old mature bucks. Mr. Forbes continuously says "food is everything in these mountains", and for good reason. He talks with us about just how important it is to find the hot oak trees in the mountains, with red oak acorns being his personal favorite. This makes sense as he tells us that his most successful time is in the latest part of the rut. Several things stick out to us about Jim. First of all, he is very calculated about his approach. Hearing him talk about how he breaks down the monotonous big woods found in the mountains is nothing short of precise. Secondly, he places most of his confidence in the natural features he finds. If he finds the right vegetation or terrain feature that he knows mature bucks like, he has confidence that one day it will produce, even if it takes years. Lastly, he puts a lot of stock into knowing the area he's hunting from front to back, as any good woodsman should. You're not going to be disappointed in this episode and we couldn't think of a better way to kick off Local Legends '21.

This week we're talking with our friend from Tennessee and big buck killer, Matt Powell. Matt is a return guest to the show and a favorite among listeners. Likely because he is one of the most consistent bow hunters we've heard. Year in and year out Matt proves that his success in the whitetail woods is more than just luck. Last summer we had a guest named Bobby Worthington that truly made all of our jaws drop. Parker & Zack Robertson sit down to talk about their hunting in Nebraska on public land where it seems like there are more hunters than turkeys. The guys traveled from Alabama to the midwest with the "gobbler on every corner" mindset, but that just hasn't been the case. With nearly 50 miles logged on the week, these birds have proven to be up to the challenge. Hunting pressure is such a big factor in any public land scenario, and it's really something you don't know how to gauge until you get there. That has been the case in Nebraska.
