| Wild Turkey Biology - How Good Can A Turkey See, Hear, & Smell | 03 Mar 2022 | 01:14:41 | |
This week on the Southern Ground Hunting podcast we're kicking off turkey episodes with an in depth look at some of the biology of the wild turkey from Chris Creed. Chris has spent many years studying the turkey and giving seminars for hunters across the US. Today he's covering several topics, answering questions like: How well can a turkey see? How's their hearing? Can they actually smell anything? We also get to hear some of his thoughts on woodsmanship, looking at things studying the crop and gizzards from harvested gobblers to find out what food sources they're keying in on the most at that time.

| Mountain Food Plots, Topography & Mature Buck Behavior with David Miller | 24 Feb 2022 | 01:34:17 | |
This week on Southern Ground Hunting we're talking with David Miller of West Virginia. We don't get the opportunity to talk about land management too often. Public land hunting really doesn't give a hunter the opportunity to do much in terms of land management. However, this week we're changing it up and covering David Miller's strategies for whitetail land management in mountain country. The southeast is scattered with hills and hollers, with parts of Alabama, Tennessee, Georgia and North & South Carolina having legitimate mountains. One thing that landowners in these areas continuously talk about is the lack of ability to really cultivate those properties to grow giant whitetails. Whether it's bad soil, lack of sunlight, or just difficult to get planting equipment in there, there's a lot of reasons for this. This results in lack of nutrients and creates very nomadic deer movement. You may get mature bucks passing through, but they're going to be on the move. David tells us about the things he does to ensure that a buck has everything they need year round to live on his properties, and it's easier than you might think!

| Fireside Chat - Making Your Shot Count On Big Bucks | 17 Feb 2022 | 01:06:05 | |
This week's fireside chat topic is brought to us from Matt Reaves. "What are we doing to make sure we can capitalize in the moment of truth?" This really is a great question. As the guys discuss this topic, they talk through their shot process and how each remains focused. As these chats normally do, this one takes a turn from shot process to eating deer nuts... and other odd things that can be eaten from a game animal. We like having fun and this was definitely a fun conversation! | Precision Trail Camera Placement For Mature Bucks - Jordan Pope | 10 Feb 2022 | 01:24:58
This isn't your everyday trail camera conversation. If you're a deer hunter, chances are you own one or several trail cams. If we're being honest most hunters really don't know how to use them effectively. Sure, you may get a picture of a big buck occasionally, but is it really teaching you anything other than the fact that he's in the area? This week we're joined by Jordan Pope who recently killed an 8.5 year old public land stud in Alabama. Jordan talks about how began narrowing down this buck's movements in the big woods and ultimately killed him in the late season. The conversation is still on-going as far as where we personally draw the line on cell cams. It seems as though the art of woodsmanship can be lost when depending so heavily on new technology, however, Jordan explains the thought processes he uses when selecting the location of each camera and woodsmanship and understand deer behavior seems to still be at the top of his priorities. Whatever your thoughts on this, you can not deny how incredible this story is and the journey he experienced. | Fireside Chat (Without An Actual Fire) | 04 Feb 2022 | 01:13:48
As deer season comes to a close in most states, Parker, Drew & Adam decide to discuss some of the season highlights... and low points. This is a fireside type convo with no real agenda, but the guys do chase a few rabbit trails. Drew tells us the story of his "urban" hunt that is so Alabama it hurts. Absolutely hilarious! Adam talks about his big archery buck from the season in Tennessee where he fully utilized trail cameras as a part of strategy. It's sad that the season is over, but we're left with some great memories! | Believing In The Efficiency Of Observation Sits with Jace Allen | 27 Jan 2022 | 01:06:56
The words "Observation Sits" get thrown around a lot, but for a lot of us patience isn't our greatest virtue. We talk a lot about being aggressive, and there's definitely a time and place for that. However, sometimes it pays off to know where you should be throwing aggressive moves at. Jace Allen joins us this week to discuss how much more efficient you can be by throwing a couple of sits in an area just to observe what the deer are doing before going in guns blazing and potentially blowing out an entire area. Jace had an incredible season and he attributes his success to being mobile and having the ability to play it safe when necessary, and go in for a kill with confidence knowing exactly how big bucks are moving. Now, it's important to note that Jace is from Missouri and much of what he talks about in the conversation revolves around having destination food sources like crops. This chat turns into a brainstorming session in parts where Parker and Adam try to draw parallels that can be taken from Jace's situation and applied to someone hunting down in the south. | Understanding The Swamp | How Bucks Utilize Swamps On Florida Public Land with Chase Prince | 13 Jan 2022 | 00:54:42
This week on Southern Ground Hunting we're gaining a better understanding of web footed public land bucks. When you think of Florida swamps you probably first think about snakes and gators, but what if we told you that they are a super important feature to help bucks survive hunting pressure? This week we have Chase Prince on the show to talk about hunting swamp bucks in Florida. He helps give us a better grasp on how they use the swamps and how if you can figure it out, you can use them to your advantage in hunting them. We had a great week in camp, Parker gives a short recap of his dreams of killing a Florida buck just almost came true. Unfortunately, a giant swamp buck will get to live another day. | Hard Earned Bucks | Big Woods Public Land Deer Hunting with Byron Horton | 24 Dec 2021 | 01:03:40
It's nice to get lucky on a big buck ever once in awhile, but we all have to admit that the memories that are burned into our minds are those bucks that we really had to work for. The fellas from The Whitetail Experience seem to have a good grasp on what it means to finally connect on one of these #hardearnedbucks. This week on the show we have Byron Horton from southern Ohio talking about how he has managed to be consistently successful in the big woods on public land in his home state, as well as his recent Kentucky trip where he was able to take home another really great buck. Byron is truly one of our favorite dudes in the game right now and we believe there is a lot we could all learn from him and his hunting style, which is basically something like "work as hard as you can for as long as it takes and eventually it will come together". It's easy to get stuck in your head when you've been grinding all season long and have just felt like nothing's going to come together. This was definitely the case for Parker this season. Normally, he's at least had some good encounters with bucks during the Alabama bow season, if not tagged a couple. The 2021 season just wasn't going as planned. One thing that all hunters say is "It just takes one second for your whole season to turn around". Well, that was the case for Parker. This week you'll get to hear him breakdown all of the hunts from the first half of December where he was able to kill 3 solid public land deer in Alabama in a short amount of time. | Meateater Comes To Alabama | 10 Dec 2021 | 01:02:30
Us southerners often wear a chip on our shoulders when it comes to deer hunting. You may have caught yourself saying things like: "Well I'd like to see those northerns try to kill a public land buck down here". Our friend Mark Kenyon asked to join Parker on a hunting trip on public land in Alabama. It just so happened that we were able to work it out where Mark could join us for our annual father/son Rutcation. We showed him the ropes, gave him a quick one day masterclass and sent him out on his own. Luckily for our listeners, you get to be the first to know the outcome! | Beginners Guide To Thermal Hubs | How Do Bucks Use Them & How To Hunt Them with Matthew Reaves | 02 Dec 2021 | 00:52:29
Welcome to the Southern Ground Hunting podcast. Matthew Reaves of Southern Pursuit is hopping on to discuss rut hunting tactics for southern public land bucks. The topic of the conversation is thermal hubs and how productive they can be if hunted correctly. Matthew and Parker both share stories of their recent successful hunts on thermal hubs, both describing how they set up and how the bucks presented a shot. Thermal hubs can be one of the most difficult terrain features to hunt effectively. Wind and thermals tend to be tough to understand, especially in these "magic holes" as Matthew calls them. The guys go over, in detail, how the hunts played out, and why they think they were able to put bucks on the ground. Become a SGH Patron: https://www.patreon.com/SouthernGroundHunting

| What The Heck Happened In Kentucky? Pre Rut In The Big Woods with Scooter Barnwell | 04 Nov 2021 | 01:10:28 | |
Us southern fellers like to wear a chip on our shoulder when it comes to deer hunting. You've probably heard, "If you can kill a buck in ______, you can kill one anywhere". Well sometimes you just need a big ol slice of humble pie, and that's what we got! Scooter Barnwell of South Carolina joins the show this week to recap the recent trip to Kentucky to hunt big woods bucks in the pre-rut. Out of about 15 guys in camp, not one tag was filled. We're talking about a camp that has some of the best public land whitetail hunters we know. It was a huge struggle! However, Scooter was in the top percentage of hunters in camp in his buck encounters. We just wanted to pick his brain on how he was breaking down areas during a time when bucks just aren't as daylight active as they will be the first week of November. We talk about big sign (scrapes and rubs), how deer used the topography, and what food sources they seemed to be keyed in on. Ultimately we came back licking our wounds, but what good would it do us to not try to learn something while we were there? | Ground Hunting 101 with Land Smathers | 21 Oct 2021 | 01:11:47
This week on SGH we're talking with Land Smathers from Mississippi. Land is a very successful public land hunter and rarely ever leaves the ground to do it. Hunting from the ground has some challenges that we hope Land can help us overcome, however, he also talks about the many benefits that you get from not hunting from an elevated position. We get it. Sometimes being elevated is necessary. We're die hard saddle hunters and will not be changing that aspect in the near future, but when you open up to the possibility of hunting without carrying in all of the gear associated with climbing...well you've walked into the apex of mobile hunting. As Land mentions, ground hunting is a "tale as old as time". From the dawn of creation, hunters have been killing animals without being in a tree. Hopefully this episode will broaden your horizon and open up new realms of possibilities for getting on public land bucks wherever you may be. | How To Take Podcast Tactics & Apply Them To Your Own Hunting. IT WORKS! | 14 Oct 2021 | 01:04:15
On the Southern Ground Hunting podcast we really want to be an example of applying tactics that we have heard from our guests and sharing the outcomes. This season will be no different. We're going to be bi-weekly sharing our experiences in the woods through February, largely based on the things we have talked to our guests about. This week, Parker and Drew share their stories of the arrows that have been tossed over the last couple of weeks. Parker has been able to kill a couple of does, and Drew was robbed by an unforeseen branch. That being said, they put the tactics talked about by Dave Owens and Warren Womack in previous episodes and it worked! Listen up! We believe that podcasts like this one really can help you be more successful in the woods. We seriously think that if you will evaluate and adapt our guest's information & our experiences to your hunting situation, it can make you better and find success yourself. Dave shares with us some of the things he's learned about chasing big bucks and it's a lot simpler than you might think. While most people know Dave for his turkey hunting ventures, he's also an extremely consistent and accomplished deer hunter. He's going to go over several things that seem to always be a contributing factor in his success.

Perhaps one of the greatest tactics for the months of September and October is finding where the acorns are dropping and which trees the deer are hitting the hardest. We couldn't think of anyone better to talk on the subject than Mr. Warren Womack. Warren has been a popular guest on our Local Legends series, but as the seasons start getting underway, this is a subject that you'll want to freshen up on. Mr. Womack goes into depth on his scout/hunt strategies, even stating that he believes the best way to hunt is to utilize in season scouting. "All acorns aren't the same", he says as he explains his process for setting up on what he believes are the preferred trees. Welcome to the Southern Ground Hunting Podcast, and thank you for tuning in. This week we’re digging into the vault from a couple years back, talking with Dave Owens of the Pinhoti Project. If you’ve followed Dave’s YouTube channel, you probably know that he is a die hard turkey hunter. What you may not know is that he actually cut his teeth in the outdoors hunting southern whitetails. He and Parker discuss how he navigates and breaks down the swampy Alabama public land areas he hunts, how he scouts it, and then how he executes a hunt. They talk about different food sources that he has found the most success on, especially when it comes to mature bucks. We tend to put human characteristics on deer when it comes to food, but Dave helps us understand that what most hunters tend to believe about a deer’s feeding habits may be further from the truth than what we think. This is an incredible conversation that you can gain whitetail knowledge from regardless of the type terrain you hunt! | How Can You Translate Deer Hunting In The North & Midwest To The Southeast | 16 Sep 2021 | 00:53:10
This week on the Southern Ground Hunting podcast, Parker and Drew are talking about the similarities and differences in hunting deer in the early season in the north/midwest as compared to the southeast. If you spend time on different forums, you'll likely hear people grumble about how "Those midwestern deer just don't act the same as our deer in the south". It's a regular topic of conversation. While in some ways it can be true, there are lessons you can draw from every hunting experience no matter where you are. In episode 143, we talk through the similarities in food sources, terrain features, how deer navigate certain habitat types, & their response to hunting pressure. We also talk through the differences in the way deer behave based on the region they're in.

| Private Land Hunt Turns To Public Land Grind In North Dakota | 09 Sep 2021 | 00:39:02 | |
Parker is recapping his trip to North Dakota in this week's SGH episode. In previous episodes, you may have heard him talk about this hunt, and how it was different from his normal hunt. He was invited to hunt on a leased property with our friends from Tethrd, which was a preset stand with bait piles type of hunt. That's not wrong, it's legal, but it's still not our normal public land grind that we enjoy so much. Parker talks about the challenges of trying to set in a preset spot, and how hard it is sometimes to be patient and wait, instead of going out and trying to make something happen. As the week progressed, and minimal deer were being seen, he made a move to hunt public land and ultimately was successful on the last day. We hope you enjoy this episode!

| Hunting Out Of State Public Land Whitetails In September with Mark Kenyon | 02 Sep 2021 | 01:00:34 | |
Southern Ground Hunting is moving north for this week's episode with a special guest, Mark Kenyon. If you don't know Mark, get out from under that rock you're living under. Mark is a part of the Meateater team and host Wired To Hunt podcast. As we move into the super early whitetail openers across the US, Mark and Parker decided to talk about hunting strategies and tactics for some of these states. Mark has hunted several different early September opener states through the years and has had a good amount of success doing it. In this episode we discuss hunting public land bucks in states like Idaho, Kentucky, North Dakota, Wyoming and a few others. This is a really good podcast to get the ball rolling, especially for someone from the south who just thinks "It's too far, too expensive, or there's no good public land early season opportunities". There really are so many affordable options for hunting these places that just might offer you the chance to shoot a nice velvet buck! | South Florida July/August Rut, How Find Public Land Bucks In Low Deer Density Areas with Swamp N Stomp | 26 Aug 2021 | 01:00:47
This week's episode of the Southern Ground Hunting podcast was a blast to record. It always amazes us when we get to talk public land deer hunting with people who, even though they live in the south, their way of hunting looks incredibly different. South Florida is a land where deer hunting simply isn't for the faint of heart. Everything in the woods seems like it wants to eat you! However, the guys from team Swamp N Stomp just pull up their big boy britches and get to work. One crazy thing about south Florida is the fact that their main rut begins in July and August. While most of us are still watching velvet bucks on trail cameras, the south Florida bucks are already hard horned and ready to find a hot doe. This week we're talking with Mark and Danny about how they break down their public land areas and consistently find bucks when the deer density is typically pretty low. How do you find a food source? What terrain features do deer gravitate to? How do you dodge dog hunting pressure? All of these questions and more will be discussed in this episode. Enjoy! | 2021 Season Kick Off | How We Plan To Hunt Big Bucks This Fall | 19 Aug 2021 | 01:21:49
Thanks for listening to the Southern Ground Hunting podcast. This week, Parker and Drew are talking about their plans for the 2021 season. Every season is a learning experience and the guys share how they plan to apply last year's lessons to this season. We're talking about Tennessee, North Dakota, Alabama, Georgia, Kentucky, Ohio, Pennsylvania & Indiana. Man it's going to be a full season, but there will be a ton of memories made. The guys spend a good portion of time talking about how they plan to attack a high odds area this year. Something we've discussed frequently, but also plan to keep evolving through the 2021 deer season. With the help of the new technology from Spartan Forge, it has taken a lot of the guess work out of the equation. We're excited to get the ball rolling this year. | Top 3 Most Bizarre Hunting Stories - Walter Lee | 29 Jul 2021 | 01:09:15
This week on the Southern Ground Hunting podcast, we're joined by Walter Lee of Chasing Tales Outdoors. We're going to take a break from our normal tactic talk to have a fun story telling episode. Now we're not talking about your regular run of the mill hunting stories, we're talking weird, bizarre, craziest things we've seen in the whitetail woods. Walter is from Florida, so he obviously wins the conversation. Florida is just full of strange people. There's no two ways around that! However, Parker has a couple of wild things that have happened to him while hunting as well. WARNING: For some reason, Walt's stories seem to revolve around poop... other people's poop. | The Art Of Consistently Killing Public Land Bucks Out Of State | Jeremy Aron | Local Legends | 22 Jul 2021 | 01:05:48
Thanks for listening to the Southern Ground Hunting series, Local Legends. This week's legend is none other than Jeremy Aron of the "Do It Yourself Hunter". Jeremy hails from the great state of Mississippi and is no stranger to big public land bucks. As a matter of fact, you may have seen him on the outdoor channel years ago or even on his YouTube channel where he posts recent hunts. If you're familiar with Jeremy, you probably have noticed that he is always hunting new states, and also always being successful in those states. Not only that but he's doing it on public land. For Jeremy, it's all a part of his system and it should come as no surprise that someone with his resume in the whitetail woods would have a system for their success. In this episode, Jeremy lays out the things that he's doing that he feels sets him apart from other hunters, even in places where the hunting pressure on public land can tend to get high through the month of November. Make sure you follow along with Jeremy and his partner, Daniel, on their YouTube channel "Do It Yourself Hunter". | The Prince Of Poachers | Charles Beaty | Local Legends | 15 Jul 2021 | 01:20:12
Southern Ground Hunting is going outside of our comfort zone a little bit with this week's local legend. We're talking with world renown outlaw hunter, Charles Beaty. Charles is a best selling author & die hard deer hunter, but he's known for his spending his younger days (over 20 years) poaching Boone & Crockett class bucks off of the King and Kennedy ranches in South Texas. DISCLAIMER: THIS PODCAST IS NOT IN ANY WAY CONDONING POACHING, but when you hear Charles' story then you'll understand why we think he's a perfect guest for this series. Getting chased by cowboys & game wardens, rattling giant bucks in the brush country, God changing his life and convicting him of his lifestyle ... this could be a movie! | Upping Your Odds On Mature Mountain Bucks | Jim Forbes | Local Legends '21 | 08 Jul 2021 | 01:16:47
Back by popular demand, Southern Ground is kicking off the Local Legends series. This week we're talking with an absolute legendary deer killing machine, Jim Forbes. Jim has been hunting the mountains of Virginia for his whole life and has learned things that have upped his odds in the deer woods. Like so many local legends we've talked to in the past, Jim makes it clear that he's not hunting deer, he's hunting old mature bucks. Mr. Forbes continuously says "food is everything in these mountains", and for good reason. He talks with us about just how important it is to find the hot oak trees in the mountains, with red oak acorns being his personal favorite. This makes sense as he tells us that his most successful time is in the latest part of the rut. Several things stick out to us about Jim. First of all, he is very calculated about his approach. Hearing him talk about how he breaks down the monotonous big woods found in the mountains is nothing short of precise. Secondly, he places most of his confidence in the natural features he finds. If he finds the right vegetation or terrain feature that he knows mature bucks like, he has confidence that one day it will produce, even if it takes years. Lastly, he puts a lot of stock into knowing the area he's hunting from front to back, as any good woodsman should. You're not going to be disappointed in this episode and we couldn't think of a better way to kick off Local Legends '21. Become a SGH Patron: https://www.patreon.com/SouthernGroundHunting

| Ultimate Trail Camera Strategy For Finding Big Bucks In Summer, Fall, & Winter | 24 Jun 2021 | 01:02:24 | |
Thanks for listening to this week's episode of the Southern Ground Hunting podcast. One thing we've not covered in depth is the use of trail cameras. As we get into the heat of summer, many of you are utilizing trail cams to gain inventory of the bucks in your area. Maybe you find yourself wanting to do that, but just have no clue how to even start. One person that truly sticks out when it comes to trail cameras and how to use them to their full advantage is our friend Reese Johnson. Reese has figured out a system that works for him year in and year out, successfully locating really nice bucks in his area with the help of over 100 cameras in the woods at any given time. In this episode we hit on location of trail cameras, both during the summer & fall. He'll teach you how he adjusts the camera placements once the "shift" happens between seasons, as well as the patterns he's consistently seeing take place. Whether you're an avid trail camera user or someone just wanting to get started, we believe that you'll be able to to find something in this episode that could revolutionize your success. | Using Summer Big Buck Intel To Capitalize During The Season with Matt Powell | 17 Jun 2021 | 01:09:21
This week we're talking with our friend from Tennessee and big buck killer, Matt Powell. Matt is a return guest to the show and a favorite among listeners. Likely because he is one of the most consistent bow hunters we've heard. Year in and year out Matt proves that his success in the whitetail woods is more than just luck. Matt takes bowhunting very seriously and uses precision in every decision he makes when hunting big mature bucks. While most hunters are taking a break from their hunting hobby during the summer, Matt is pursuing his hunting passion and locating potential target bucks to chase during the season. Tennessee differs from much of the south in that there is a decent amount of agriculture, mostly soybean fields, that he can glass during this time of year. While that's a great benefit, Matt also talks about ways you can take advantage of the summer in more wooded areas that makes up so much of the south.

| Aggressive Public Land Whitetail Strategies in the BIG WOODS with Johnny Stewart | 03 Jun 2021 | 01:18:44 | |
It's not often that we bring on a guest from outside of the southeast. When we do, you better listen up because they're about to bring the heat. Our guest this week is a mature buck killer named Johnny Stewart. Johnny primarily hunts the big woods of Pennsylvania, targeting big bucks in the big woods. Over the years, he has built up quite the reputation for himself as a deer hunter, as he has seen exceptional success in areas that see a lot of hunting pressure. This week, we're talking to Johnny about his aggressive tactics when hunting these bucks that see as much or more pressure than most parts of the country, which is why we think you'll be able to apply some of his strategy to your own scenario. Perhaps one of the greatest and most unique approaches he has is how he in-season scouts, especially in a new area. Buckle up buttercup! The man's about to spit some fire at you!

| From The Vault | Targeting A Mature Buck During The Rut, Stand Placement, Persistence | FULL Bobby Worthington Episodes | 27 May 2021 | 04:21:00 | |
Last summer we had a guest named Bobby Worthington that truly made all of our jaws drop. It's rare to find a man with this much knowledge on the subject of mature bucks, and even more so to have the bone on his wall to prove it. To kick off our 2021 deer season episodes, we thought it would be good to recap Mr. Worthington's episodes and combine them all into 1 podcast. It's a long one, but if you haven't listened then you're in for a treat. If you were a listener when these episodes came out, it's not a bad idea to listen again! No doubt these episodes are some of the best we've had in SGH history. Mr. Worthington goes in depth on 3 things that he believes are the keys to success in hunting mature bucks: - Targeting a mature buck during the rut - hunt him when he's vulnerable, find his core areas and stick with him, a buck's home range, and much more - Stand Placement - Funnels, transition zones, terrain features, finding the right buck sign - Persistence - The amount of time spent in the woods is directly related to your success rate in killing a mature buck. Bobby believes that if you'll do these 3 things, you will see more success. Listen close & take notes! This episode is slap full of knowledge!

| More Hunters Than Gobblers | How To Overcome Turkey Hunting Pressure On Public Land | 19 May 2021 | 01:07:28 | |
Parker & Zack Robertson sit down to talk about their hunting in Nebraska on public land where it seems like there are more hunters than turkeys. The guys traveled from Alabama to the midwest with the "gobbler on every corner" mindset, but that just hasn't been the case. With nearly 50 miles logged on the week, these birds have proven to be up to the challenge. Hunting pressure is such a big factor in any public land scenario, and it's really something you don't know how to gauge until you get there. That has been the case in Nebraska. However, the guys have been able to be successful on their trip and overcome the challenge of massive amounts of hunting pressure.
