What I’m Telling My Kids (and Why It Matters)20 Dec 202400:19:45

In this episode of The Something New Show, host Mindi Linscombe shares the conversations she's been having with her kids that are helping shape their character, mindset, and future. These are the lessons she hopes will guide them as they navigate life, relationships, and the world around them.

What Mindi is Telling Her Kids:

  • Forgive quickly! You often need to be forgiven as well. Extend grace to others.
  • If it won’t matter in 5 years, don’t give it more than 5 minutes.
  • Share encouragement right away. If you think of something good about someone, tell them! People need encouragement like they need air. It strengthens your relationships.
  • Great businesses sell experiences, not just products. The Linscombe kids are learning to rate experiences at places they visit, shop, or eat.
  • Daily habits lead to long-term results. Micro habits and small choices compound over time.
  • Learn from others’ experiences. Life is too short to learn everything the hard way! Seek mentors and learn from their wisdom.
  • Steward your blessings. Be grateful for how God has blessed you and take care of the gifts and resources He’s given you.
  • Dream big! Grit, belief, and mindset can help even the most unlikely people achieve incredible things.
  • Bless others intentionally. Make a list of people you want to bless and how you will bless them.
  • Be open to new things and friendships. Try different hobbies, sports, and activities, even in small samples.
  • Own your mistakes. It’s okay to make mistakes, but take responsibility for them.
  • Learn from older generations. Spend time with grandparents and mentors. Ask them about their stories and experiences.

From forgiveness and gratitude to dreaming big and stewarding their resources, these nuggets of wisdom are practical for families in every stage. If this episode resonates with you, share it with a friend who needs some inspiration for raising their kids!

Top 10 Tips for Meaningful Connection with Your Kids 24 May 202400:15:47

Parents, do you find it challenging sometimes to connect with your children in deeper and meaningful ways? Are you often tired, on a screen, or honestly don't know what to do to better create a special moment with your child?

In this episode, guest host Jordan Linscombe covers his top 10 tips to help parents better connect in genuine ways with their children.

Jordan & Mindi Linscombe have been married since 2005, parent four wonderful children, and lead four companies and a foundation. While life is full, they've learned several ways of prioritizing the precious moments and hours they have with their kids. It's natural that all working parents get tired and want to have a break. However, the Linscombes have found it helpful to use some key approaches that keep their kids engaged and feeling loved.

Jordan's Valuable 10 Tips Are:

  1. Use four objects and have your children share a creative story. This could be items on a meal table or stuffed animals at bed time. Watch their creativity emerge and they unpack new stories for you.
  2. Carpet Time. Get down and play with them on the ground. Whether it's legos, tea parties, or whatever speaks their language...take time to be on their level and connect.
  3. If you have toddlers…really get down on their level and switch the power dynamics. Let them touch you on the nose or forehead and you fall over. Let them be the big, strong person. Watch the smiles!
  4. Work travel. Tell your children relevant details about your work travel. Work travel is important and essential for some jobs. However, you can invite your children into the process. Ask them to pray and give ideas for your trip. Report back on how the trip went. Don’t make the trip more important than them and keep them engaged in conversation on the outcomes and how their prayers and ideas are a part of the process.
  5. Ask kids opinions on others. They can often discern things that you may not pick up on in other people.
  6. Create and reference a family key word. Let them help frame it out. The Linscombe Family key word is HOPE.
  7. Create intentional dinners & conversations. Prepare good questions & topics to discuss during family meals. Have special guests or grandparents help reinforce key ideas you are teaching your children.
  8. Snuggle & read together with your kids at bedtime. It takes time but is totally worth it. And, you'll only be able to do this for a limited amount of years.
  9. Ask them they're high, low, and "buffalo" for the day. A buffalo moment is a surprise moment they did not expect during the day.
  10. Schedule and create one on one time with your child. Take them to breakfast. Get them outdoors. Do something memorable that exposes them to fun memories with you.

The Power of Co-Leadership: Marriage Insights & Reflections with Anne Evans15 Nov 202400:52:20

Anne Evans leads REAL LIFE ministries in Colorado Springs, Colorado. She counsels, mentors, and is an author of the Real Life book series on the topics of marriage, relational restoration, intimacy, and more.

Anne and her late husband Tim Evans were married for over 43 years. Tim was a fireman and Anne was a nurse. In his early forties, Tim retired from his position as Deputy Fire Chief from a growing Chicagoland suburban department. For over two decades, they invested into the lives of other couples together as a team. They were ordained as pastors and went on to receive their master’s and doctor of practical ministry diplomas from Wagner Leadership Institute. Tim & Anne focused on living out God’s creational marriage design of mutuality, and functional equality—what they referred to as co-leadership.

The Evans had a deep impact on the life of Jordan and Mindi Linscombe five years into the Linscombe's marriage. They provided them with frameworks and tools to help live out an approach to marriage, leading together, and unified decision making that is a huge part of the Linscombe's day-to-day life.

In this honest and emotional episode, host Mindi Linscombe and Anne cover topics including:

🔸Moments of reflection to honor Tim and how he impacted the Linscombes and so many others.
🔸Tim & Anne's early years and how they learned how to apply teamwork (from their fire fighting and nursing work) into co-leading their marriage.
🔸The traffic light framework the Evans used and teach for unified decision making and why ''Unity Trumps Disunity".
🔸The importance of the question, "Who Told You That"? And how we need to challenge some unhelpful concepts and preconceived notions that try to be 'truths' in our mind.
🔸How the Linscombes have applied learning from the Evans to help collaborate better as husband and wife around the home, in work, in parenting, and more.
🔸How the Linscombe used the traffic light approach in the tough decisions they had to make navigating their son's childhood cancer journey.
🔸Why unity in marriage is a framework that helps families thrive.
🔸Ungodly Beliefs: Anne and Mindi unpack what these are, examples of their own, and ways to counteract those with Godly Beliefs.

The Linscombes want to thank Anne for joining on this episode and for the joy of having been positively impacted by Tim & Anne's work. Jordan & Mindi continue to be challenged & encouraged by this prayer from Tim & Anne: "May the God who is both great and good make your marriage stronger and your hearts braver. May He create not only a willingness to die for your marriage but also a passion to live for it."'

📈 10 Ways I Grew My Business!26 Apr 202400:27:42

Interested in starting your own business but don't know what to do? Or perhaps you tried in the past but don't know what went wrong? In this special coaching episode, host Mindi Linscombe shares lessons learned and drops her top 10 recommendations on starting a business. Mindi gets asked all the time, "How did you start? How did you do it?". She and her husband Jordan started their successful companies from nothing. So, here are the top recommendations and points she is sharing openly for you:

  1. 🔸We made a choice to live off a small income. We sacrificed in our personal budget when we started. We sacrificed a lot of time. We did side jobs like piano lessons to make ends meet.
  2. 🔸I knocked on doors for bank loans and had to stay persistent. Our bridal business is heavy inventory so we had to have enough captial. Jordan also told Mindi, that he'd rather her try and start the business and fail then say "I wish we would have tried" when older. Went all in and left "safe" behind.
  3. 🔸We fond someone already doing the type of work successfully and asked for help.
  4. 🔸We started small and low risk. Don't quit your day job until the new business can cover enough of your financial needs. Learn from your sales and grow with what is working.
  5. 🔸We networked like crazy. We connected face to face with other vendors or like minded people in our industry.
  6. 🔸We followed up with every single potential lead. I built my list and asked others to refer people that needed my services.
  7. 🔸We didn't pay me for 3 years! We paid off debt, kept money in the business and made the company foundation solid. We built margin for rainy days. We managed our expenses tightly. Always invest in what gets you more customers.
  8. 🔸We hired someone who gave me more time back so I could make more sales.
  9. 🔸We tried to understand what it would really cost us in our time, expectations, energy and more. It's essential you understand what starting a business will cost you...especially if you are married. So much is delayed gratification!
  10. 🔸We consistently assessed and evaluated how the business was doing. Then we would learn from that feedback, course correct, and improve.

How to Really Connect with Gen Z Customers!12 Apr 202400:13:42

What do Gen Z customers and Gen Z entrepreneurs truly want in today’s business environment? It’s a simple but powerful thing! And, host Mindi Linscombe unpacks it in this short, special episode of The Something New show. Listen to the entire episode as Mindi explains:

🔸Like any generation, Gen Z craves authentic, human connection!
🔸How they want to be seen and have a human moment with you.
🔸While Gen Z has had and expects excellent use of technology, they also want genuine interpersonal interaction.
🔸When it comes to marketing, text message open rates are better than email open rates.
🔸However, it’s even better to pick up your phone and call your customer.
🔸In your phone call approach, bring the authenticity & call people by name.
🔸Start with the conversation about them. Stay genuinely interested and curious.
🔸For in-person connections, solid eye contact has been and always will be a key for deep connection.
🔸Nothing can beat in-person interaction (as you network and build leads).
🔸Paid ads work (and the Linscombes certainly invest in them), but in-person events helps expedite your sales process.
🔸Go out there and shake a hand!
🔸We (all generations) want that eye to eye connection.
🔸Be service oriented and intentional with people. Create networking opportunities of your own but also take time to attend other great ones in your business community.
🔸If you want to build your business, invest in human connections and masterminds, as you simultaneously invest in ads.
🔸Link hearts & swap stories.
🔸Your business plan will get ahead with in person!

Authentic human connection is part of creating a life worth celebrating. So, if you are a Gen Z entrepreneur or looking to better connect with Gen Z customers, put these principles into practice and watch the impact it will have on your business and relationships.

Build a Better Garden: How Working on Yourself Attracts Better Relationships in Business & Life08 Nov 202400:08:09

Do you want to have a better team at your business? Or perhaps attract an amazing spouse? Or even have better friendships?

Hi, I’m Mindi Linscombe, host of The Something New Show, and in today’s episode, we’re diving into what I have learned on the importance of working on myself and my company so I can attract better people into my life. I like to use the analogy that I do not go out chasing butterflies but rather focus on working on making a beautiful garden. Let’s break it down!

In this episode, we cover:

🔸We need to first look at how we can improve ourselves, our leadership, and our communication skills to be a better person that people want to be around.
🔸Why I coach business owners to realize they are often the problem or challenge to first be solved, not their team.
🔸How these principles can apply for someone who really is longing for an amazing spouse.
🔸How these same ideas apply to attracting and maintaining remarkable, life-giving friendships.
🔸Practical tips how you can put this mindset and approach into practice to improve the relationships in your company and personal life.

Debunking 11 Dating & Relationship Myths16 Feb 202400:41:27

Do you ever feel pressure or find it challenging to manage expectations in dating and relationships? In this special episode recorded on Valentine's Day 2024, host Mind Linscombe & her husband Jordan tackle 11 myths around dating and relationships to help you alleviate some pressure, clear up potential confusion, and level set expectations. These include:

  1. You have to find your spouse in college
  2. Always having to have a regular date night
  3. Never going to bed angry
  4. You need to find “the one”
  5. Good relationships are easy
  6. Your partner should complete you
  7. Great partners are never attracted to anyone else
  8. Perfect relationships do not have serious conflicts
  9. Relationships have to be 50/50
  10. If you have a good relationship, you should be happy all the time
  11. Expectations around the holidays and being with family

Jordan & Mindi have been married since 2005 and have since learned how to better manage expectations in their relationship. However, most of what they learned was through the school of hard knocks and investing in some counseling. They wish they had better perspective on these myths and assumptions earlier in their relationship. So, that's why The Something New Show is bringing you this episode so you can be your best and set even better expectations in your dating/relationship journey.

Secrets to a Meaningful Life with Dianne Derby15 Dec 202300:39:41

“Would you like to meet the most fulfilled person you’ll ever know? You’re looking at him.” That's what the second-oldest living survivor of Pearl Harbor told journalist Dianne Derby one day. From then on, her life found deeper meaning and true transformation!

Dianne Derby is a two-time Emmy awarding-winning journalist with nineteen years of experience covering major news events in southern Colorado and across the country. In this vulnerable and powerful episode with host Mindi Linscombe, Dianne shares about her fascinating career in journalism. However, you have to hear about her mentoring conversations with World War II veteran Jim Downing.

When Dianne Derby arrived as a news anchor in Colorado Springs, she was hungry for approval, affirmation, and connections. She raced from one event to the next, capturing stories and sound bites. Everything changed when she met Jim. Dianne and Jim began meeting on Tuesdays, where eventually she invited her followers into their dialogues with dozens of videos on Facebook Live, where viewers could learn from Jim just as she had. With thousands of views, the chats struck a chord with people who were hungry for a meaningful life. Over the course of five years, Jim Downing taught Dianne Derby to slow down; to embrace only what is true, real, and good; and to live a life of significance. These visits fascinated her and eventually led to Dianne developing an intimate relationship with Jesus Christ. She delivered the eulogy at his funeral, a memorial service that was broadcast for the world. His lessons live on in her stories, her friendships, and the significance of her work as a journalist, a mother, a wife, and a follower of Christ.

This fascinating episode also covers:

  • Dianne's early work in journalism.
  • Why Mindi started in the path to journalism but quit. : )
  • The incredibly hard sacrifices Dianne made to grow her career and stay ethical in the process.
  • Why you must be a good reporter before you can be a good anchor.
  • The importance of listening to red flags in your work environment.
  • Dianne's hard journey through divorce.
  • How Jim helped Dianne come to understand the love and healing found in Jesus Christ--and that He is a God of second chances.
  • How listening to people is celebrating people!
  • The secret to a meaningful life and what three things to keep in balance.

What if there were a guide for entrepreneurs on how to grow wealth and do it with true purpose? In this insightful episode, host Mindi Linscombe is joined by Jim Dew, co-founder of Dew Wealth Management. Jim shares his journey from being a math teacher to building a wealth management firm specializing in fractional family offices for entrepreneurs. He and his wife Mimi have dedicated 25 years to helping business owners save millions in taxes, protect assets, and exit businesses profitably. Mindi and Jim explore the key elements that contribute to a meaningful entrepreneurial journey, including building a compelling vision, aligning with the right professionals, and focusing on purposeful wealth management.

Listen to the entire episode as they unpack:

🔸Jim's Background and Path to Wealth Management
From math teacher to financial advisor and then entrepreneur, Jim’s story is one of growth, learning, and following his passion for making a difference.
Inspired by his humble upbringing and support from his wife, Jim eventually launched Dew Wealth Management, which provides billionaire-style family office services to non-billionaire entrepreneurs.

🔸What is a Fractional Family Office?
Jim explains the concept of a family office, traditionally used by billionaires to manage wealth through an integrated team of specialists.
Dew Wealth Management offers fractional family offices for entrepreneurs, allowing them to access a team of experts without the high cost, thus saving on taxes and maximizing ROI.

🔸The Entrepreneurial Stages of Wealth
The Eager Entrepreneur – Starting with a vision and lots of energy.
The Overwhelmed Operator – Struggling with growth and time management.
The Secure Shareholder – Working on the business, not in it, and focusing on asset protection.
The Influential Investor – Using wealth to make a positive impact beyond personal gain by giving back and supporting causes.
