Aubrey, a businessman from Naas, Co. Kildare, was recently named the Red Cross Humanitarian of the Year for 2024, and it’s easy to see why.

His personal journey, from growing up on a farm in Punchestown where he experienced poverty and hardship, to becoming a passionate advocate for the marginalised, is nothing short of extraordinary.

As the Founder and Chairman of Tiglin, Aubrey has spent the past 16 years providing housing, rehabilitation, and essential supports for those affected by homelessness, addiction, and displacement. Through his leadership, Tiglin has transformed thousands of lives, giving a voice to those who have been silenced by life’s toughest challenges. But his dedication doesn’t stop there—he is also involved in numerous other charitable organisations, from the No Bucks Café on Pearse Street to serving as Chair of the South West Drugs Task Force, Casadh and the Tivoli Training Centre in Dun Laoghaire.

From Barcelona originally, Living in Ireland for the last 13 years, Mireia is a qualified primary school teacher with a MA in Educational Psychology, a QQI level 6 in Therapeutic play skills and mum to 2 children.

Mireia founded Discovery Playtime, an Irish business that promotes the power of play through family events, play sessions, summer camps and an online shop with hundreds of high quality educational and sensory toys. Join Audrey & Baggie as they hear from Rachel Fayne, Co-ordinator of the DAVINA Project (Domestic Abuse Violence Is Never Acceptable). The DAVINA Project is part of SAOL. SAOL is an integrated programme of education, rehabilitation, advocacy and childcare in North Inner City Dublin. The SAOL Project’s on-going commitment to the women, children and community members continues to develop, responding to the changing needs of the women who participate in our project with creativity and commitment.

Rachel takes us on her journey into social care, following her passion to help the most marginalised in society, leading her to the DAVINA project. She gives good insights into what makes women who are affected by abuse and domestic violence so vulnerable and outlines what her project is doing to help. She also give a great insight into her own version of self-care which sustains her in her work.

This episode has been released during the United Nations 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence, an annual international campaign that kicks off on 25 November, the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, and runs until 10 December, Human Rights Day.

Sherin shares her incredibly raw and personal story of grief following the sudden death of her mother, community activist Dympna Hughes and her subsequent healing only to be thrust into the depths of Covid isolation. Sherin and her cousin Rachel Hughes created the Sister Sheds out of a desire for connection with their communities and to help other women in need of support. This is a story of community and hope and it is evident that the Sister Sheds is the start of an incredible story of community renewal.

We are joined by Catherine Kelly, Deputy CEO of WALK, an organisation that supports people with disabilities in Dublin and Louth. She has been at the forefront of designing, developing, and delivering award winning programmes for people with intellectual disabilities that provide pathways to access employment in the open labour market. She has a particular interest in the development of person-centred, socially inclusive supports and in the provision of supports that are driven by an equality and human rights agenda. She is a regular speaker at national conferences and has made significant contributions to policy development that focuses on the empowerment of people with intellectual disabilities. She has been an associate lecturer with the Department of Humanities in TU Dublin for the last 10 years lecturing on the part time and full time Bachelor of Arts in Social Care course. Catherine is currently pursuing her Doctorate in Social Science with Maynooth University and contributes as a writer to RTE Brainstorm.
