Who Should Be Your First Hire?10 Jan 202400:20:44

Hey Small Business Squad! In the last solo session (Episode 106), we went deep into profit patterns in businesses, so today we're taking it up a notch and tackling the question, who should be your first hire? There’s lots of different opinions on this, so let’s get into it!

Topics Covered:

  • Hiring for personal help vs. business growth. It's not just about getting help; it's about ensuring it aligns with your business growth. Crunch the numbers and assess if the investment in personal support will translate into more profits.
  • Hiring for admin tasks sounds like an easy plan, but you need to consider how this impacts your time, business development, and ultimately, your bottom line. It's not just about saving time; it's about strategic growth.
  • Technicians vs. Administrators. Hire people who are directly involved in the service.
  • When is the right time for a manager?

What You Need to Hire Your First Staff: Contracts, Policies, and Beyond!27 Aug 202400:12:15

Hey Small Business School! Today, we’re tackling a question that I got on Instagram, someone is hiring their first non-family staff member and they want to know what they need in place. Whether you're in Canada or elsewhere, setting up the right framework from the start is crucial. Let’s dive into what you need to make this transition smooth and successful!

Topics Covered:

  • Start with a solid contract and offer letter. This should include details on hours, compensation, bonuses, and any provided equipment. Consulting with an HR or labor law expert can save you from costly mistakes.
  • Know the Labor Laws. Each province or region has its own labor laws covering holidays, overtime, and other key aspects. Understanding these laws and including them in your contract is essential to avoid legal pitfalls.
  • Outline specific rules about work hours, dress code, and use of company e quipment. Providing clear guidelines helps prevent misunderstandings and maintains a positive working relationship.
  • Start with more structure and gradually offer flexibility as trust is built.
  • Regular check-ins and performance reviews are key. Make sure there are no surprises—employees should be aware of how they’re doing and what’s expected.

Starting with a strong foundation from the beginning of the onboarding process will set you and your new team member up for success!

Welcome back! Today in Small Business School, we’re diving into a topic that’s crucial for every business owner—time budgets. Whether you’re running a product-based business or offering services, understanding where your time and your team’s time goes can make all the difference in your profitability and impact. Let’s explore how time budgets can streamline your operations and boost your bottom line!

Topics Covered:

  • Knowing how much time your team spends on tasks helps you assess their value and optimize efficiency, ensuring that you're getting a solid return on investment.

  • Giving your team specific time budgets and clear instructions can prevent wasted effort and align their work with your goals, leading to consistent results.
  • Tracking time against budgets allows you to address inefficiencies early, helping you maintain or even improve your profit margins.
  • If you’re new to time budgeting, start by assigning small time blocks and adjusting as you learn. It’s a flexible system designed to help you and your team succeed.

Time budgets aren’t just about saving money, they’re about creating a thriving and efficient business. If you’re unsure where to start, reach out, and I would be happy to help you implement this game-changing tool!

Experiencing Business Breakthrough 13 Dec 202300:21:41

Hey Small Business Squad! I'm full of excitement after our incredible Business Breakthrough event with my pals, Steve and Kristina. Today's episode is like a backstage pass to all the goodness that went down. 10 passionate entrepreneurs, huddled together, sharing stories, struggles, and “aha” moments. Here's a sneak peek of the golden nuggets we uncovered.

Topics Covered:

  • Visibility is the Name of the Game. Everyone in the room had a burning question about getting eyes on their business, the hunger for visibility is real. But guess what? It's not a problem to solve—it's the essence of business. Measure your progress, find your power partners, and embrace the business journey.
  • Knowing your customers inside out. It's not just about what they want but understanding what they don't want. Dive deep, ask the right questions, and watch your success unfold.
  • Sometimes, it's not about doing more in business, it's about giving it time and trusting the process.
  • One standout moment was advising a business on expanding its offerings. Instead of charging full speed ahead, we realized they were leaving untapped opportunities on the table. Adding more products led to brand clarity and a revelation of how to make the journey smoother.

The breakthroughs were massive in this room and it's proof that one day can redefine your business trajectory. Now, I want to hear from you! Did any of these breakthroughs hit home? DM me your thoughts and stay tuned to The Business Breakthrough Instagram for info on your next event!

The Truths Behind Course Creation 22 Nov 202300:21:26

Welcome back to another episode where we're diving into a topic close to my heart today; course creation. Whether you're running a product-based business or offering services, if you've hit that point where you're thinking, "Okay, what's next?” A course could be the game-changer for you! So settle in, and let's talk about why courses can be a game-changer and how to avoid the oh so common pitfalls.

Topics Covered:

  • Benefits of Courses: Courses offer a way to reach a broader audience at a lower price point. They cater to different learning styles, providing nuggets for those just dipping their toes, and they are ideal for sharing specialized knowledge without the high cost associated with one-on-one services.
  • Biggest Mistakes to Avoid:
    • Building a course without knowing if your audience actually wants it can lead to crickets when it comes time to sell. Audience input is key!
    • Don't break the bank on creating the perfect course initially.
    • Even the best course won't sell itself. Marketing efforts are crucial to sustaining sales beyond the initial enthusiastic buyers.
  • Realistic Expectations:
    • Courses aren't a one-and-done cash cow. Building a community and consistently attracting new eyes is vital for sustained success.
    • Tailor your approach based on your expectations. Whether you're aiming for a massive launch or just serving your existing clients, align your efforts accordingly.

Course creation can be a game-changer for your business. However, success lies in understanding your audience, investing wisely, and managing expectations, so your efforts align with the outcomes you truly desire! 🚀

The Double-Edged Sword of Flexibility in Entrepreneurship08 Nov 202300:18:15

In today’s episode of The Small Business School we are talking about the flexibility of being a small business owner. We all love the freedom to craft our dreams, set our schedules, and dance to the beat of our own business drum. But let's be real, sometimes it's like walking a tightrope without a safety net.

Topics Covered:

  • Flexibility is the heartbeat of entrepreneurship. From shaping our dream projects to taking impromptu breaks for family moments, it's a beautiful chaos we willingly signed up for.
  • The flip side hits hard when decisions fall squarely on our shoulders. Family, team, customers—it's a juggling act.
  • Clarity breeds confidence. Taking a beat to weigh options, considering opportunity costs, and looking at the bigger picture transforms decisions from guesswork to strategic moves. It's not about overthinking; it's about making informed choices.
  • Beyond dollars and cents, leadership shines when decisions are communicated with thoughtfulness. People respect a leader who has a clear thought process, one that involves consideration for the impact on everyone involved.

Embrace the flexibility, but remember, clarity is your superpower. Share your stories, connect with me on social media and let's keep this conversation going!

Are You Dropping the Ball with Delegation?20 Aug 202400:08:48

Welcome back to Small Business School! It’s mid-summer at the time of recording this and if you’re anything like me, you’re balancing the hustle of business with making those all-important summer memories. But as the pace picks up for the fall, it's time to ask: Are you delegating what needs to be delegated? Let’s dive into how you can lighten your load and set your business up for success!

Topics Covered:

  • The trap of doing it all; we often fall into adding "just one more thing" to our plates, thinking it’ll be quicker. But this habit can cause tasks to slip through the cracks.
  • Weekly to-do list audit to ensure you’re delegating tasks that others could handle, freeing you up to focus on the bigger picture.
  • Instead of micromanaging, ask your team what they have on their plate and when they can realistically complete new tasks. This approach builds ownership and accountability.
  • Spend time teaching your team how to do tasks correctly. It might take more time upfront, but it pays off when they can perform tasks independently and efficiently.
  • With summer wrapping up and fall on the horizon, now’s the time to create systems and ensure your team is ready for the busier months ahead.

Are you delegating what you need to be delegating? Take a moment to assess your workload this week and see where you can delegate. Your team will thrive, and so will your business!
