The Truth About Vitiligo31 Oct 202400:14:46

Vitiligo is a skin condition where the immune cells attack the cells that make pigment, resulting in white patches on the skin. Just like with so many chronic skin conditions, each person’s experience with vitiligo is unique. Some people just have a few small patches, while others have more widespread depigmentation.  For those who have just received a diagnosis or are struggling with self-acceptance, the journey may feel overwhelming at first. Vitiligo may change how someone looks, but it doesn’t change who they are inside. By accepting themselves, people with vitiligo can live openly and beautifully, just as they are. This journey can turn challenges into successes, allowing them to shine in their own special way!

Tune into this week's recap episode, where I share key insights from the latest podcast episode featuring LaTrese Coyt.

Key Takeaways:

  • Vitiligo is an autoimmune skin condition where the immune cells attack the cells that make pigment, resulting in white patches on the skin.
  • Treatment options for vitiligo include topical steroids, calcineurin inhibitors, Jack inhibitors, and narrow band ultraviolet B therapy.
  • There is no cure for vitiligo, but treatments can help suppress the immune system and promote repigmentation.
  • Latrice Coit, a vitiligo patient and advocate, shared her experience and gave advice on self-appreciation, knowledge, inspiration, and networking.
  • It is important to seek support and connect with others who are going through the same condition.

But what if it starts earlier? Like in your 20s? And especially if you’re a woman?

For some women, hair loss isn’t just something they deal with later in life, it’s something they’ve been struggling with since their teenage years. And while we’ve come a long way in treating hair loss, there’s no magic pill that fixes it all. The truth is, it’s way more than just a cosmetic issue—it’s tied to how we see ourselves, our confidence, and even how we show up in the world. But here’s the thing—embracing hair loss can actually be a powerful way to step into your authentic self.

Check out this week’s podcast featuring Barb Betts as she shares her hair loss journey. She discusses how it began, the treatments she explored, and the hardest parts of her experience. If you’re dealing with hair loss, you definitely won’t want to miss this one!

- Sharing personal experiences with hair loss can help others going through similar struggles. - Sharing your story and being authentic can lead to unexpected support and empowerment.

- Everyone has their own unique hair story and something they may be hiding or feeling ashamed of.

- Wigs can be a great solution for hair loss, providing versatility and the ability to style and care for them like natural hair.

- Hair loss is a complex issue with various causes, and not all treatments or products work for everyone.

The Trouble with 'Clean Beauty'29 Aug 202400:14:44

Download the free eBook 'Skincare Myths Busted' here.

We all love the idea of 'clean beauty' and people will spend a lot on products that promise just that. But did you know that 'clean beauty' doesn’t really have a clear definition? This can make things pretty confusing for us as consumers.

For some people, it may mean products without synthetic chemicals, while for others, it’s all about using natural or plant-based ingredients, or animal free testing. But because there’s no set standard, what one brand calls 'clean' may not match your definition of 'clean.' It really depends on the brand you choose, and there's no universal standard. Unfortunately, it's mostly a marketing term by brands today.

Tune into this week's recap episode, where I share key insights from the latest podcast episode featuring Dr. Lindy Fox.

Key Takeaways:

- Clean beauty is a marketing term with no clear definition or standardization.

- Skincare products labeled as 'natural' can still contain ingredients that are harmful or allergenic.

- Fragrances and essential oils are common sensitizers and allergens in skincare products.

- Patch testing can help identify potential allergens in skincare products.

- A simple skincare routine with a gentle cleanser, moisturizer, and sunscreen is sufficient for most people.

- Consistency is key in achieving healthy skin.

Who hasn't come across the term 'clean' beauty? I know I have. And really, who wouldn’t want their beauty products to be clean? But have you ever stopped to think about what 'clean beauty' really means? You might be surprised to find out that it’s not as simple as it sounds. The concept of 'clean beauty' is actually quite nuanced, and there's no one-size-fits-all definition. What the marketing suggests and what it actually means can be two very different things.

Want to learn more about clean beauty and go behind the scenes with a dermatologist turned skincare creator, then be sure to check out this week's podcast with Dr. Lindy Fox to get the real scoop on clean beauty. Is it genuine or just a buzzword? Learn what clean beauty really means, the top products to use, and the biggest myths about clean beauty.

Key Takeaways:

- The term 'clean beauty' has no real definition and can mean different things to different people. - Marketing terms like 'dermatologist approved' and 'medical grade' often have little meaning and can be misleading. - It is important to avoid common sensitizers in skincare products, such as fragrances and certain preservatives. - Maintaining a healthy skin barrier is crucial, and using gentle cleansers and moisturizers can help achieve this. - Parabens, while they can be endocrine disruptors, may not pose a significant risk when applied topically. Simplicity is key in a skincare routine. - Educate yourself on problematic and safe ingredients. - Empower yourself to test products for sensitivities.

Beyond Fillers...All About Biostimulants Weekly Recap Episode24 Oct 202400:16:26

While fillers are a popular choice for quick results, biostimulants offer a great long-term option for anyone looking to improve their skin health. Biostimulants are great for addressing these deeper signs of aging, especially in places like the temples, cheeks, and jawline, where even a little volume loss can change how you look. While the results take time to show, you’ll start to notice a more youthful and refreshed appearance as your body naturally rebuilds collagen. Another plus is that biostimulants can help slow down aging by keeping your collagen levels up. This is ideal for anyone looking for subtle, long-lasting results without the regular maintenance that fillers need!

Tune into this week's recap episode, where I share key insights from the latest podcast episode featuring Dr. Sapna Palep.

Key Takeaways:

- Biostimulants are a natural way to boost collagen. - They differ from fillers, which often lead to an overdone look. - Collagen loss begins in our late twenties and accelerates during menopause. - Sculptra and Radiesse are popular biostimulants. - Biostimulants provide long-lasting results compared to fillers. - Candidates for biostimulants often have significant volume loss. - The treatment requires patience as results take time to appear. - Proper aftercare is essential to avoid complications. - Lifestyle choices impact the longevity of collagen results. - Dr. Mina advocates for a natural approach to aesthetics.

Is this the secret to glowing skin?15 Aug 202400:09:25

Check out Dr. Mina's top picks for skin care here.

If you're anything like me circa 2010, you may have thought of sleep as a waste of time in today's busy world. I mean, seriously, couldn't I be a whole lot more productive with 8 hours than just lying in bed?! Yikes, but that's exactly how I used to think about sleep. And in today's go-go-go world, it's easy to see how that message is propagated.

But now I'm older and wiser (hopefully), and the word is getting out that sleep is not just a waste of time or a sign of weakness, but actually an integral part of our body's healing and vitality. I mean, they don't call it "beauty sleep" for nothing! While we previously viewed sleep as a period of downtime when our bodies and minds shut off, we now realize sleep is actually a dynamic, active state that plays a vital role in our physical health, mental well-being, and overall quality of life.

Tune into this week's recap episode, where I share key insights from the latest podcast episode featuring Dr. Funke Afolabi-Brown.

Key Takeaways:

- Sleep is not a waste of time, but a critical time of self-care and restoration. - Establish a consistent sleep routine and environment for quality sleep. - Keep technology out of the bedroom and read before bed to calm the mind. - Going to bed early is essential for waking up feeling rested. - Cut back on device usage and mindless TV watching to create more time for sleep. - Consistent sleep routines are important for children of all ages. - Sleep is a vital component of overall health and skin health.

The number one reason you have acne!15 Jul 202400:44:40

Think acne's just a teenage problem? Think again! Many women in their 30s, 40s, and even older still deal with breakouts. While we often hear about 'hormonal' acne showing up along the jawline for adults, in reality, adult acne can pop up all over the face! And guess what? Hormones are usually behind most acne, no matter how old you are.

If you're struggling with stubborn acne, seeing a dermatologist can provide personalized solutions to help you feel better about your skin! Tune in to this week's podcast with Dr. Barbieri to learn about hormonal acne in midlife women, effective treatment options, and the safety and side effects of isotretinoin.

Key Takeaways:

- Acne is a common condition that affects people of all ages, not just teenagers.

- Oral antibiotics are often overprescribed for acne, leading to antibiotic resistance and other health issues.

- Hormones play a significant role in acne development, and hormonal treatments like spironolactone and combined oral contraceptives can be effective.

- Clascoterone, a topical anti-androgen, is a new treatment option for acne that can be used in both men and women.

- Over-the-counter regimens with topical retinoids and benzoyl peroxide can be effective for mild acne.

- Isotretinoin is a highly effective treatment for severe acne, but it should be used under close medical supervision due to potential side effects.

- Pregnancy monitoring is crucial while on isotretinoin due to the risk of birth defects. It is important to follow the iPledge program guidelines.

- Reducing sugar intake and considering dietary changes, such as avoiding whey protein, may help improve acne. Supplements like vitamin D, vitamin B5, and zinc can also be beneficial.

When it comes to skin health, your thyroid gland plays a major role. For example, if your thyroid levels are low, you might notice your skin getting dry and cracked, no matter how much you moisturize. On the flip side, if your thyroid levels are high, you might see a doughy texture, especially around your eyes and lower legs. Hair loss can happen with both high and low thyroid levels! So, whenever I see these skin issues, I always think about the thyroid.

If you’re dealing with skin problems like dryness, hair loss, or brittle nails, you should definitely see a dermatologist or a doctor who knows about thyroid issues. Sometimes, a simple blood test can reveal if your thyroid is out of whack. Trust me, fixing those thyroid levels can really help you feel and look so much better! Don’t wait—your body will thank you!

Join me in my Weekly Recap Episode, where I share the key insights from this week's podcast episode with Dr. Dana Gibbs.

Key Takeaways:

- Trust your instincts if you have vague symptoms that may be related to your thyroid.

- The thyroid gland plays a major role in regulating metabolism.

- Imbalances in thyroid hormone levels can lead to various skin manifestations.

- Skin symptoms of hyperthyroidism include sweating and overactive skin, while hypothyroidism can cause dryness and a lackluster appearance.

- Thyroid conditions can be linked to other autoimmune disorders.

- The skin reflects the internal health of the body, and dermatologists can often diagnose underlying conditions.

- Proper evaluation and treatment are important for thyroid issues.

It's not you, it's your thyroid!08 Jul 202400:41:55

Have you ever found yourself dealing with hair loss, feeling constantly tired, always feeling cold, or struggling with weight gain that just won't budge? Your thyroid might be the culprit! This little gland, located right at the base of your neck, is a powerhouse when it comes to regulating many of our body's functions. It produces hormones that control everything from our metabolism to how our body uses energy.

When the thyroid isn't producing enough hormones (hypothyroidism) or is producing too much (hyperthyroidism), our bodies definitely take notice and start acting out. Tune in to this week’s podcast episode where Dr. Gibbs and I share tips on what you can do to support your thyroid.

Key Takeaways:

  • The skin is a reflection of overall health, and skin issues can indicate underlying systemic problems.
  • Hypothyroidism can manifest in various symptoms, including dry skin, hair loss, weight gain, and fatigue.
  • Comprehensive lab testing, including reverse T3, is crucial for accurately diagnosing and treating thyroid dysfunction.
  • Treatment for hypothyroidism may involve the use of T3 medication, and dosing should be individualized based on the patient's needs. Hypothyroidism can be caused by factors such as Hashimoto's disease and high stress levels.
  • Hyperthyroidism is often associated with Graves' disease and an overproduction of thyroid hormone.
  • Proper diagnosis and treatment are crucial for managing thyroid disorders and improving overall health.
  • Maintaining a healthy thyroid involves factors like managing stress, getting enough sleep, and adopting a balanced diet.
  • If you suspect you have a thyroid issue, it's important to seek help from a healthcare professional.

All Things Perimenopause and Your Skin!01 Jul 202400:45:32

If you're in midlife and noticing that you're forgetting things more often, feeling more anxious, experiencing heart palpitations, mood swings, weight gain, or dull skin... you might be going through perimenopause or menopause! These seemingly unrelated symptoms may actually be connected, and part of the hormonal changes seen in peri and menopause!

The good news is that suffering is not mandatory. Make sure to visit your dermatologist and gynecologist to get accurate information and the best support during this season of life. Embrace this transition with knowledge and care, and discover how you can thrive through these changes!

Don't miss this week's podcast episode where Dr. Sadaf Lodhi talks all about peri and menopause. Learn about the symptoms, what medications can help, and get useful recommendations for getting through this stage. You wouldn’t want to miss this one!

- Common symptoms of perimenopause include hot flashes, night sweats, mood swings, brain fog, joint pain, hair loss, pain with sex, decreased libido, and irregular periods.

- Hormone therapy, specifically estrogen and progesterone, can help alleviate symptoms and prevent long-term health issues like osteoporosis, heart disease, and diabetes.

- The best time to start hormone therapy is during perimenopause or early menopause, before the age of 60 or within 10 years of the last menstrual period.

- There is a knowledge gap among practitioners regarding hormone therapy, and it is important to find a healthcare provider who is up-to-date and comfortable prescribing hormones.

- Social media and increased awareness are empowering women to demand better research and treatments for perimenopause and menopause symptoms. Topical estrogen cream can be used in the vulva region to address the changes in vaginal tissue that occur due to decreased estrogen levels in postmenopausal women.

Join me in my Weekly Recap Episode, where I share the key insights from this week's podcast episode with Dr. Sheilagh Maguiness.

Key Takeaways:

- It is safe to bathe newborns and children with sensitive skin frequently, using gentle soaps and moisturizing afterwards.

- Not all products marketed for babies are safe; it is important to check the ingredients.

- Children should wear sunscreen from the age of six months and older, and mineral-based sunscreens are recommended.

- Teens and tweens can keep their skincare routine simple, focusing on gentle cleansers, moisturizers, and sunscreen.

In this week’s podcast episode, Dr. Mina and Dr. Sheilagh Maguiness debunk six common myths about pediatric skincare. They discuss the importance of frequent bathing for newborns and children with sensitive skin, emphasizing the need to use mild cleansers and moisturizers to maintain the skin barrier.

They also address the misconception that products labeled for babies are always better, highlighting the importance of choosing fragrance-free and hypoallergenic options.

Key Takeaways:

- Frequent bathing with mild cleansers and immediate moisturization is beneficial for newborns and children with sensitive skin.

- Eczema is caused by a deficiency in the skin barrier protein, not by food allergies.

- Products labeled for babies are not always better; it is important to choose fragrance-free and hypoallergenic options.

- Avoiding restrictive diets and introducing allergenic foods early can help prevent food allergies in children.

- Kids need sunscreen and sun protection from an early age, and mineral-based sunscreens are recommended.

- Tweens and teens should have a basic skincare routine, but excessive products and harsh ingredients are unnecessary and can harm the skin.

- Natural skincare products are not always best for the skin, as they can contain irritants and allergens.

Sun Protection, Beyond Sunscreen!10 Jun 202400:38:56

If you're someone who values your skin's health, but loves soaking up the sun's warmth, then UPF clothing might just be what you need! UPF stands for ‘ultraviolet protective factor,’ and it’s a rating system designed for fabrics and clothing, much like SPF (sun protection factor) is for sunscreen.

As a dermatologist, I can't stress enough the importance of sun protection. Over the years, I've seen countless cases of skin damage that could have been prevented with proper UV protection. That's why I'm such a huge advocate for UPF clothing. It simplifies sun protection and makes it accessible for everyone!

Tune in to this week's podcast episode with Dr. Virginia Reeder, where we discuss why sun protection matters, whether sunscreen alone is sufficient, and how to determine if your clothing offers adequate sun protection!

Key Takeaways:

  • UPF clothing provides superior sun protection compared to regular clothing.
  • The UPF rating system indicates the level of sun protection provided by clothing.
  • Wearing long sleeves and pants in the summer can be comfortable and beneficial for sun protection.
  • There has been a cultural shift towards tanning, but it is important to prioritize sun protection. Be smart about sun exposure to prevent skin damage and skin cancer.
  • Use sunscreen with a broad spectrum and reapply it regularly.
  • Seek shade and physically cover up with clothing, hats, and sunglasses.

In This Episode:

(4:48) The Importance of Sun Protection and Limitations of Sunscreen

(14:10) Understanding the UPF Rating System and Factors for High Sun Protection

(16:40) How to choose the right UPF Clothing

(22:00) Tanning is the New Tobacco

The Real Scoop on 'Sephora Babies' Weekly Recap Episode06 Jun 202400:11:20

Children around the age of 10-12, known as 'tweens,' have gotten into the skincare game big time. And while creating healthy skincare habits is key and a great thing to instill in our children, the skincare craze may have gone too far with a heavy emphasis on actives and anti-aging! Using harsh actives like alpha hydroxy acids, vitamin C serums, and retinols/retinoids can be too intense for young skin. Not only are these ingredients usually unnecessary for this age group, but layering too many products can also lead to redness, inflammation, irritation, and even skin damage! Join me in my Weekly Recap Episode, where I share the key insights from this week's podcast episode with Dr. Brooke Jeffy. Key Takeaways: - Young children do not need complicated skincare routines or harsh actives. - Focus on teaching tweens and teens healthy skincare habits and self-care measures. - Model healthy skin habits and emphasize the importance of sun protection. - Lifestyle choices, such as exercise, diet, stress reduction, and sleep, have a significant impact on skin health.

Living and Thriving with a Chronic Skin Condition14 Oct 202400:38:58

Did you know that as dermatologists, we diagnose and treat over 3,000 skin conditions? One of the most common—and tricky—ones is allergic contact dermatitis (ACD).

It's an inflammatory skin condition that causes a rash in areas where your skin has made contact with an allergen. Typically, you won’t notice the rash right away; it usually appears 24 to 48 hours after contact, making it a classic case of delayed-type hypersensitivity. What makes ACD so challenging? Well, almost anything can trigger it! Common culprits hide in our everyday beauty and personal care products—think fragrances, botanicals, and preservatives.

Check out this week’s podcast with Dr. Mani Javvaji, where she shares her experience with allergic contact dermatitis and offers advice and tips for managing this chronic skin condition.

Key Takeaways:

- Allergic contact dermatitis (ACD) is a common allergic skin condition characterized by a red, itchy rash that occurs 24 to 48 hours after exposure to an allergen. - ACD affects one in every five people and can be controlled but not cured. - Patch testing is the gold standard for diagnosing ACD and involves placing allergen-containing patches on the back for 48 hours to identify specific allergens. - Common allergens in ACD include nickel, neosporin, fragrances, and certain preservatives. - Managing ACD requires careful reading of product ingredient labels and making lifestyle changes to avoid allergens.  - Natural products labeled as 'natural' can still contain botanical ingredients that trigger ACD. - Use testing, applying a small amount of a product to the inner elbow, can help determine if it will cause a reaction. - Seek help from a dermatologist or allergist specializing in ACD for proper diagnosis and treatment. - Protect emotional well-being by finding support from online communities or therapists, and practicing self-compassion.

In This Episode:

(7:05) Diagnosis and Avoiding Allergens (9:15) The Role of Apps in Managing ACD (13:20) Understanding Patch Testing Process (17:00) Common Allergens in ACD (18:45)Challenges of Managing ACD (24:34) Managing ACD: Reading Labels and Making Lifestyle Changes (32:25) Beware of 'Natural' Products
