| Episode 17: Pervertibles part 2 | 19 Mar 2024 | 00:57:41 | |
Weāre back, after an extended absence. In November of 2022, Franklinās mom was diagnosed with cancer, so he spant the next year flying back and forth between Portland and Florida to help his dad care for her. Toward the end of her life, she required round-the-clock care, so this podcast ended up being put on hold. She died last December.
We have several episodes nearly ready to go, so we're trying to get back on track. In this episode, part 2 of our two-part series on pervertibles, we talk some more about repurposing normal, everyday items for sex. As usual, you can find a transcript for this episode at skepticalpervert.com
| Episode 16: Pervertibles, part 1 | 10 Sep 2023 | 00:47:07 | |
In part 1 of another 2-parter, we explore the wide whacky world of pervertibles! What are pervertibles? Theyāre anything with an ordinary, innocuous purpose that can be pressed into service as sex toys. Wooden spoons? Great for paddling! Chip clips? They reseal plastic bags to keep your potato chips (crisps for you Brits) fresh, but also make excellent nipple clamps! Humans are ingenious. Given enough time and creativity, thereās little that canāt be used as a sex toy.

In this episode, we look at the book Come As You Are: The Surprising New Science that Will Transform Your Sex Life by Emily Nagoski, and discuss the idea that libido isn't a simple drive toward sex, but rather a combination of "accelerators" and "brakes" that either drive us toward sexual engagement or inhibit sexual desire.

Aphrodisiacs! What are they? Are they real? Is there, in fact, something you can take to make you horny? In this episode, we explore aphrodisiacs, the mythology around them, the scientific evidence (spoiler: every food or supplement that's been tested in double-blind studies has failed), and the new class of melanocortin-agonist aphrodisiac drugs.
| Episode 1: Intro | 24 Oct 2021 | 00:17:56 | |
Good day, and welcome to our show, eh? In this episode, we introduce the Skeptical Pervert podcast. Who are we, and what is this all about? What do we mean when we say we take a rational approach to human sexuality?

| Episode 15: Asexuality! | 16 Jul 2023 | 00:32:44 | |
It's been a while, but we're back, with a new episode about asexuality! Well, a sort of new episode. This episode was up briefly, but the audio was garbled, so we've fixed the problem and it's back. Anyway, in this episode, we talk about the many flavors of asexuality. We chat with Kitty about the broad range of attitudes, drives, and behaviors that fall under the asexuality spectrum, which, when you get down into the weeds, is really more a three-dimensional graph than anything else. Turns out asexuality is complicated; who knew?
| Episode 14: 50 Shades of Terrible Negotiation | 24 Dec 2022 | 01:12:46 | |
In this episode, weāre doing something new. Eunice and Franklin have never read or seenĀ 50 Shades of Grey, so Joreth reads it to us as we record our reactions in real time. Specifically, Joreth reads us the scene where Christian Grey and Anastasia Steele negotiate their BDSM relationship, noteworthy in the annals of erotic fiction because Christian violates Anaās consent multiple timesĀ during the consent negotiation. Come along on the ride as Joreth inflicts this upon us! After all, misery loves company, right? As usual, you can find the transcript at skepticalpervert.com. Ā
| Episode 13: Sex Work Across Cultures | 22 Nov 2022 | 00:36:11 | |
How is sex work like that guy inĀ Mad Max: Fury Road who rode into combat playing a flamethrowing guitar? We talk about that in this episode of The Skeptical Pervert! This episode was delayed by a misadventure with COVID-19 and a hard drive crash. but it takes more than that to keep us down. In this episode, we examine how the concept of 'sex work' varies across different cultures, and along the way talk aboutĀ colonization. This is even more complicated than the 'what is sex work?' question, not only because every culture and society treats sex work differently, and often says completely different things about sex work altogether, but it's sometimes hard for people from one society even to be able to tell if something in a different society is sex work. Weāre not professional anthropologists, so we invite you to muddle through this with us, and if you have any comments, let us know! As usual, the transcript can be found at SkepticalPervert.com.
| Episode 12: Sex Work Through History Part 2 | 11 Sep 2022 | 00:30:57 | |
Welcome, fans! After delays caused by a hard drive crash and COVID, we're back (at last!) with the second of the two-part look at sex work through history. In this episode, we chat about the Winchester Geese, a group of sex workers managed by the Bishop of Winchester, and muse about several historical sex worker philanthropists who seemed a lot more in tune with Christian charity than most Christians of the day. We also detour into the philosophies of St. Augustine and Thomas Aquinas and chat about official state-sanctioned brothels in France. Check it out!
| Episode 11: Sex Work Through History | 04 Jul 2022 | 00:25:46 | |
Sex work: Mankind's oldest profession, right? Today we continue our series on sex work by looking at sex work (and some of the common myths and misperceptions about sex work) throughout recorded history. The history of sex as a profession is complex, and many of the things you might believe about it turn out not to have much of a historical basis. (It doesn't help, of course, that much of the language around sex, even in ancient times, is full of innuendo and nudge-nudge-wink-wink humor intended for an audience familiar with understated references, which doesn't age well.) We also suggest that sex work may in fact be older thanĀ homo sapiens as a species, and meander into historical accounts of adulterous Popes and people being thrown through windows. You can find a transcript of this episode at skepticalpervert.com
| Episode 10: What is Sex Work with Andrew | 10 Jun 2022 | 00:53:13 | |
