What do you do when you hate Instagram but... you kinda need it to market your online business? Do you push through even though it feels bad for your mental health? Do you go cold turkey even though it'll hurt your business? Or is there another way to get clients? A way that doesn't involve social media? Until lately, you may have noticed I went quiet on Instagram, only using my Instagram story and not posting to my feed very often. Before this silence, I was doing pretty well on the app! I had reels that were getting 1.5 million views. I gained 800 followers from one post. Then 10,000 in a week. Everything was amazing, right? Except the app felt like information overwhelm. I wasn't following accounts that made me feel good about myself or my business. (Believe it or not, it was the other "slow business" accounts that were making me feel bleh, not the girlboss accounts!) And Instagram just felt bad for my mental health. I complained about the app for a while. Moaned to my sister. I blamed the algorithm, I blamed the creators, I blamed the evolution of the app... Feeling like I really integrated big life lessons or uncovered new understandings about myself and life. Sometimes even unlocking new dreams and goals for my future. I've had my own bouts of overwhelm here and there when balancing building my own tiny home (with zero DIY skills I might add!), running a business, and being in a long-distance relationship. It's normal to not feel like you have the energy to market yourself or your business. To not even feel motivated to work at all. But earning a living is self-care. It's a way we care for ourselves, our families, and our wellbeing. There are times when, yes, you do need to rest. Perhaps even for weeks or months. (Especially if you are suffering with illness or you are burnt out.) But there are also times when you need some self-discipline. When you need to get in touch with the "girlboss" inside you and use her to help you work - even if you're only doing a few hours of work and not a full day. Today, let's talk about this more. Scaling our businesses almost always requires us to step out of our comfort zone and into some discomfort. Discomfort is a requirement for growth. You've heard me say this before and I even recorded a podcast episode about it! (Ep 60) But it isn't always wise to step into too much discomfort at once. And some business owners may be in a season where it isn't wise to step into discomfort at all. Before we can scale our businesses successfully (without self-sabotage), we have to make sure we do so from a foundation of safety. It's only when we feel a sense of safety within our businesses and nervous systems that we can scale from a calm, confident place. When we try to scale from a place of fear, pressure or anxiety we just trigger ourselves into fight, flight or freeze which doesn't take our business where we want it to go, it just deteriorates our mental health and confidence. So today let's have a chat about safety before scaling. I'm going to tell you about a time in my own business where I tried scaling without safety, what happened, and how I rebuilt some safety into my business so that you can see how you may be able to build it into yours.

People usually make decisions from one of two places: Fear or growth. Fear-based decisions look like... - Choosing to stick with your target market because it's familiar and profitable, even though you don't enjoy working with this market of clients. - Deciding to not launch the podcast or Youtube channel you've been dreaming of because you're afraid no one will care. - Deciding not to launch a new offering because you're afraid of putting lots of time into something and not getting a return. When we constantly make fear-based decisions, we start running a fear-based business. And that's not fun! It starts feeling unfulfilling, unmotivating and stressful because we're not operating from our "true north", we're not challenging ourselves, and we're not working in alignment with who we really are and what we really want. It's understandable though and it's not wrong to catch yourself operating like this. We all do at times. But the better we get at catching ourselves when making fear-based decisions, the better we get at slowly shifting to growth-based ones. Choices that align us and our work with purpose, passion, heart and fulfillment. There's the odd time in life when you're thriving in all areas: friendships, family, relationship, work, finances, personal and spiritual growth, health and hobbies. But most of the time, I believe a lot of people and business owners are stressed because they hold the unrealistic (and usually unconscious) expectation that we can and should be thriving in all of those areas at once, all of the time. So when we're not, we guilt, pressure and beat ourselves up about it. We compare ourselves to Nancy on Instagram with the six figure launch and the perfect husband and the wonderful workout routine and the three kids and the 5 books she somehow manages to read each month. We keep living in silent expectation that one day we will reach a place where we'll just Have It All Figured Out and every area of our lives will perfectly align.
