Is Scripture memorization still worth the effort in the age of AI? (Bonus Episode)02 Oct 202600:20:15

Is Scripture memorization still worth the effort in the age of AI?

Today, we can ask an AI assistant for a Bible verse on virtually any topic and get an answer in seconds. So does that make memorizing Scripture less important—or could it actually make Scripture memory more important than ever?

In this episode of the Scripture Memory Podcast, we explore what changes when AI can instantly retrieve biblical information, why a persuasive answer isn’t necessarily the same thing as truth, and how memorizing God’s Word can give Christians a firm foundation in an age filled with competing voices and opinions.

The goal of Scripture memory isn’t simply to retrieve the right verse faster than your phone can. It is to know the truth, build your life upon it, and allow God’s Word to shape the way you think, believe, and live.

098: You Need Scripture for Prayer28 Aug 202600:12:47

How can Scripture shape the way we pray—especially when we don’t have the words?

In this episode of the Scripture Memory Podcast, Luke Hutterer explores **Psalm 5:3** and David’s model for morning prayer. We see a pattern of approaching God with **intentionality, expectation, and confidence**, trusting that He hears us and faithfully responds.
Luke also shares a story from his first mission trip to Alaska, when anxiety about sharing his faith led him to Joshua 1:9 and the reminder to be strong and courageous. That experience became a powerful lesson: when Scripture is already stored in our hearts, God’s Word can come to mind in moments of fear, uncertainty, gratitude, praise, and despair.
The Psalms are especially valuable because they give us language for nearly every season of life. When your heart feels full—or when you feel like you have nothing to say—Scripture can help shape your prayers and turn your attention back toward God.

In this episode:
• Why morning prayer can set the direction for your entire day
• What Psalm 5:3 teaches about intentional prayer
• Why we can pray with expectation and confidence
• How Scripture memory helps when you don’t know what to pray
• Luke’s story from his first mission trip
• Why the Psalms are such a powerful place to begin memorizing Scripture

097: Why Scripture Recitation Matters: More Than Memorizing Words | Reciting with Rachel22 Aug 202600:36:37

Reciting with Rachel — Episode 2: Why Scripture Recitation Matters: More Than Memorizing Words

What's the real difference between reading Scripture aloud and reciting it from memory? Simon Camilleri (Public Bible Reading) returns to answer that—and to share why the goal was never just memorization, but internalization.

In Part 2 of this conversation, host Rachel Eernisse (Scripture Speakers) and Simon explore how Scripture recitation fits within the broader ministry of public Bible reading. Simon explains why Scripture was not only written to be preserved, but also to be spoken and heard—comparing the Bible to sheet music that is written so it can be played.

Rachel and Simon discuss the difference between simply memorizing words and truly internalizing Scripture, why effective Bible reading and recitation both require preparation, and how God's Word can move from the page, into the mind and heart, out through the voice, and into the hearts of listeners.

They also talk practical steps for churches, families, and small groups to build a culture around hearing God's Word spoken aloud. Simon shares ways churches can value and strengthen the ministry of public Bible reading, while Rachel discusses reading Scripture together as a family, ABIDE groups, and ScriptureFests.

Later in the episode, Simon reflects on his theater background and experience presenting memorized Scripture dramatically. He explains the freedom that comes from internalizing a passage deeply enough to look people in the eye, use movement, and communicate Scripture naturally—and why passages committed to memory can continue shaping us long after we can no longer recite them word-for-word.

The episode closes with a Scripture recitation from Rachel.

Reciting with Rachel is a collaborative series between Scripture Speakers and Scripture Memory Fellowship, hosted on The Scripture Memory Podcast.

096: The Forgotten Practice That Shaped the Bible As We Know It14 Aug 202600:42:12

Reciting with Rachel — Episode 1
Biblical History of Scripture Recitation, with Simon Camilleri

In the debut episode of the Reciting with Rachel series, host Rachel Eernisse (Scripture Speakers) welcomes Simon Camilleri (Public Bible Reading) all the way from Australia to trace the biblical history of public Scripture reading — from Moses reading the covenant at Sinai, through King Josiah's rediscovery of the Law, to Ezra's reading in Nehemiah 8, Jesus in the synagogue, and Paul's charge to Timothy to devote himself to the public reading of Scripture. A rich, sweeping look at why reading (and reciting) God's Word aloud has always mattered to His people.

094: Heart, Soul, Might: Wholehearted Love20 Feb 202600:15:19

🎙️ New Podcast Episode!
Deuteronomy 6:5 is one of the most familiar commands in Scripture— “You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might.”

In this episode of the Scripture Memory Podcast, we take time to listen to Deut. 6:5 the way Israel first heard it—spoken aloud as a daily call to wholehearted devotion. We explore what those words meant in their original world (heart, soul, and might not as separate “parts,” but as a full-life surrender), and why this verse still cuts through our distracted, divided attention today.

You’ll be guided through a Scripture memory experience that uses repetition, space, and simple reflection to help God’s Word move from familiarity to formation—so this command doesn’t stay a slogan, but becomes a steady compass for your week. This isn’t about trying harder to “love God” in your own strength; it’s about letting His Word re-center what you desire, how you live, and what you commit.

If you’ve been feeling spiritually scattered—or you want one clear verse to carry with you and return to throughout the day—this episode invites you to slow down, listen deeply, and practice loving the Lord with your whole self.

093: Good News of Great Joy19 Dec 202500:11:40
🎙️ New Podcast Episode!

Christmas is filled with noise, activity, and expectations—but the original Christmas announcement came quietly to ordinary people in an unexpected place. In this reflective episode of the Scripture Memory Podcast, we slow down and sit with the angel’s words from Luke 2:10–11, the heart of the Christmas gospel.

Together, we listen to the passage as it was first heard—spoken aloud before it was ever written—then explore why the angel’s message still matters today: “Fear not… I bring you good news of great joy… for unto you is born this day a Savior.” This joy isn’t seasonal sentiment or emotional optimism. It’s anchored to a person—Jesus Christ, the Savior.

You’ll be gently guided through a Scripture memory experience that uses repetition, silence, and song to help God’s Word settle not just in your mind, but in your heart. We reflect on why Scripture memory is especially important at Christmas—not to add more information, but to remind us of what is most true when life gets loud.

Whether you’re overwhelmed by the season or simply longing to refocus on its meaning, this episode invites you to slow down, listen deeply, and carry one line of Scripture with you throughout the week as a reminder of why we celebrate Christmas.

063: Strategies for Memorizing with Children 23 Aug 202400:20:27

Psalm 127 teaches us that children are the heritage of the Lord and the fruit of the womb is His reward. How do we cherish and nurture these gifts from the Lord correctly? We do so by instructing them in His ways by teaching our children the Word. Scripture memory is a vital way for them to learn. It slows them down to hear it and naturally leads to meditation. Memorizing with children is often easier said than done. In this episode, our hosts will discuss various memorization techniques with them. 058: Quiet Consistency (ft. Daniel Louis)07 Jun 202400:27:30

Scripture memorization deserves to be a normal part of the Christian life. Yet, all too often, we view Bible memory as the spiritual equivalent of running a marathon. Since most people aren't running this marathon with us, it can be tempting to think we're going the extra mile in our walk with Christ by memorizing Scripture. In this episode, special guest Daniel Louis discusses "quiet consistency" in Scripture memorization. Rather than viewing it as a special achievement, Daniel views it as one of the most basic components of spiritual formation. Join us for this episode as we explore what it means to embrace Scripture memory as a normal and essential part of the Christian life.

056: Beginning with Your Youngest Memorizer03 May 202400:25:28

Earnest Christian parents are eager to begin discipling their children. However, we tend to have a romanticized or idealized image of it all. After the evening meal, the family will gather for instruction in the ways of the Lord. The children will sit quietly and soak up biblical teaching like a sponge. The reality proves different. Children are easily distracted and sometimes fight the very instruction they need. What do we do? This episode will discuss working with your youngest memorizers (preschoolers). We’ll answer some of the essential questions for doing this successfully. Tune in for another instructional episode of The Scripture Memory Podcast.

055 - Deep Cuts: Why and How to Memorize Obscure Biblical Texts19 Apr 202400:19:48

Most streaming services have a “Deep Cuts” playlist showcasing an artist’s more obscure songs. It is so rewarding to explore those tunes. We often find hidden gems. Consider Scripture memory in the same way. Of course, we want to memorize the Bible’s greatest hits. However, because “All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness” (2 Tim. 3:16), the Holy Spirit has something to say and teach in every verse. Our souls will be nourished when we commit these more obscure passages to memory. In today’s episode. We will discuss the why and how of memorizing the Bible’s “Deep Cuts.” Tune in for another informative episode of The Scripture Memory Podcast.

Bonus Episode: Empowering Your Prayer Life with Scripture Memory22 Mar 202400:20:57

The Lord wants us to use Scripture memory for His glory. Among other things, we memorize to obey God’s Word (Josh. 1:8), evangelize the lost (2 Tim. 3:15), and gain victory in spiritual warfare (Eph. 6:17). But what about prayer? Can we use Bible memory to empower our prayer lives? You bet. The Scriptures reveal God’s will for us. When we pray His Word back to Him, it invigorates our prayer life because we have confidence that we are praying according to His will (1 John 5:14). In this episode, our hosts will offer some ways you can incorporate Bible memory into your own prayer life and share a new resource from Scripture Memory Fellowship. 053: High-Intensity Memorization 15 Mar 202400:26:31

As a general rule, it’s best to have a regular pace in your memory work. Sometimes, however, it can be valuable to have a season of what we call “High-Intensity Memorization.” This is a period of time – maybe a few days, maybe a few weeks – when you put the pedal to the metal and memorize as much Scripture as you can. This, of course, is challenging, but there are also some unique benefits to the approach. Our hosts will discuss H.I.M. while highlighting the pros and cons. Join us for another informative episode of The Scripture Memory Podcast.
