This week, Sam & Ralph discuss an underappreciated satire of American violence--Series 7: The Contenders (trailer). Filmed as a reality show, this 2001 film follows 6 people who are forced to fight to the death by the fascist American Entertainment Complex. It's also a black comedy!
We both really recommend watching Series 7: The Contenders. Especially, if you remember American reality television in the early aughts. The entire movie can be found on YouTube here: MOVIE. This is not our link, so do not get mad at us.
We also discuss the incredible work of Scarecrow Video at the top of the episode. If you'd like to take advantage of their new RENTAL BY MAIL program (especially now that Netflix DVD's are dead), you can sign-up here: Scarecrow Video. We highly recommend checking them out, especially if you're in the U.S.
Content Warning: the movie and our discussion talk about suicide multiple times. Since this is a dark comedy, we understand if that's not your flavor of conversation.
RIYL: Battle Royale, The Hunger Games, The Running Man, Punishment Park
The SOV Episode: Sledgehammer (1983) & Blonde Death (1984)
27 Sep 2023
01:36:42
This week we discuss two shot-on-video (SOV) classics. First we watch the one that started it all, the original direct-to-video masterpiece, SLEDGEHAMMER (1983). THEN, we discuss the underground queer masterpiece, BLONDE DEATH (1984).
There isn't really a way to spoil these movies, but we do discuss some plot (plot?) details of both. If you have the stomach for SOV films, we recommend checking them out.
And congratulations to the WGA on reaching a tentative agreement!
Outro: Angry Samoans - "Time Has Come Today" (link)
Our rewatch/recap of the Saw franchise continues with a late, great entry to the series--SAW VI! This is the film where John Kramer develops something close to a coherent moral code! Some of the people in this movie actuallydeserve what they get!
AND get ready for next week, because we'll be rounding out the existing franchise. That's right! We'll be watching SAW 3D (2010), JIGSAW (2017), and *sigh* SPIRAL (2021). Then we'll be all caught up for the release of SAW X later this month on September, 29th.
Thanks for listening to The Screaming Room--the only podcast about horror movies!
The SAW pain train rolls on! This week we recap the 2008 entry into the franchise, SAW V! Join us as we try to make sense of all the SAW timeline, the doppelganger detectives, and (of course) discuss whether the TRAPS are any good in this movie.
This week, we're diving into a new release--THE POPE'S EXORCIST (2023)! We thought you all deserved a break from the grotesque world of SAW (plus we didn't finish our SAW V & SAW VI recording this week because we were interrupted by a plumber). We recommend watching The Pope's Exorcist before you listen, but we don't think you're missing too much if you don't! The Pope's Exorcist is streaming now on Netflix.
DELUXE EPISODE! Our recap of the Saw franchise continues! This week, Sam & Ralph discuss and recap SAW III (2006) and SAW IV (2007). Join us to explore the iconic twists, and the headache-inducing turns.
If you haven't seen either film, we encourage you to revisit them. We'll unpack the convoluted story in detail, so expect SPOILERS (and maybe a helpful explanation or two).
BONUS CONTENT! Our episode this week ran a little long (okay, it ran 90-minutes too long), SO that means it's time for our first BONUS EPISODE! Join us for our discussion of SAW II! We'll get into the JIGSAW HYPE HOUSE and discuss whether or not SAW II has the nastiest trap in the entire franchise. Let's get gross!
WOULD YOU LIKE TO PLAY A GAME? In anticipation of the September 29th release of SAW X, we're revisiting the Saw franchise! Come along with us as we explore all the twists, turns, highs, and lows of the iconic franchise. Find out which traps were the best, which ones were the most unfair, and who actually deserves to be subjected to them.
NOTE: This is a long conversation, this is our first TWO-PART EPISODE! Expect our conversation on SAW II to drop later this week.
Insidious: The Last Key (2018) & Insidious: The Red Door (2023)
11 Aug 2023
01:24:05
IT'S FINALLY HERE! This is the final episode of our rewatch of the Insidious franchise. Find out how the 2023 sequel stacks up, and hear our final rankings of all 5 films. We also chat about Sharksploitation and the dangers of Quicksand. AND in anticipation of the release of Saw X, next week we begin a rewatch of the entire SAW FRANCHISE! So get ready to revisit the worst bathrooms of all time with SAW, and the nastiest pit of all time in SAW II.
This week, we continue our rewatch of the Insidious franchise with Insidious: Chapter 2 (2013) and Insidious: Chapter 3 (2015)! We also talk at length about Cecilia Condit's shot-on-video short film Possibly In Michigan (1983) for a while. We recommend checking out this odd horror-musical masterpiece! You can also read more about Cecilia Condit below.
QUICK NOTE: there are some small audio issues in this episode (Sam's fault). It's mostly in the first half, then it goes away. It's not too bad. If you notice it, it's not your podcast device. This one's on us.
EPISODE DESCRIPTION This week, Sam & Ralph continue exploring the world of demonic and supernatural horror. We'll be discussing the buzzworthy new Australian Horror film TALK TO ME (2023). This conversation will be extremely spoiler-free. You can watch the trailer here, and Talk to Me opens nationwide on July 28th. We highly recommend seeing this one in a theater. 💀👻
EPISODE DESCRIPTION This week, Sam & Ralph discuss two DEMONIC films--Malum (2023) & Insidious (2010). We also discuss microphone feedback, SAG-AFTRA joining the WGA strike, Hollywood studio misconduct, and what makes a good jump scare. JOIN US!
EPISODE DESCRIPTION In this episode Sam & Ralph discuss whether they would be the first podcasters to survive a horror movie. Then they talk about ramen served with giant isopods, and take a look at some of the best horror films of 2023 (so far).
Then, we dig into our discussion of this week's movie: Holy Spider (2022). Check out the trailer, and we encourage you to watch the movie before listening.
DOUBLE FEATURE: The Blackening (2023) & Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey (2023)
06 Jul 2023
01:08:45
EPISODE DESCRIPTION In this episode Sam & Ralph debate! Which animal is the scariest? Are all skeletons boys?? Does copyright law only exist to create Intellectual Property for the largest multinational corporations to exploit in perpetuity???
They also discuss a couple of movies from 2023, of course. They start with The Blackening before moving on to Winnie The Pooh: Blood And Honey. Buckle up for the most coherent double-feature of the year!**
SPOILER ALERT We spoil small details of Black Mirror, Season 6. But mostly they talk about the bad episode with Aaron Paul and Josh Hartnett.
TRIGGER WARNING Ralph Burps directly into the microphone and Sam cannot edit it out of the episode.
