College Admissions Essay Advice for Juniors from Dr. P. + 5 Scholarship Opportunities for Students in Grades 9 through College!24 Feb 202500:37:13

Dominique Padurano, or Dr. P. as she is known, founded Crimson Coaching to help all students fulfill their potential. A Harvard grad, Dr. P. has experience as a high school teacher and tutor. In 2014, she opened Crimson Coaching, where she helps students in several ways, including as a college counselor and essay coach.

In our conversation, Dr. P and I discussed:

  • Why a family would want to work with a college essay coach

  • The ideal college essay writing timeline for students applying for the first time

  • How involved should parents be during their child’s college essay-writing journey

  • What makes Dr. P different than college essay coaches

  • Advice for students about to embark on the college essay-writing journey

  • And much more…

To connect with Dr. P., email her at info@crimsoncoaching.com, visit the Crimson Coaching website or her YouTube Channel.

Dr. P. and I are hosting a FREE webinar on Thursday, March 13th, at 7:00 pm Eastern Time.

Crimson Coaching's President and Head Coach, Dr. P. (Dominique Padurano, Ph.D.) and Scholarship GPS's Creator and Coach Dave Peterson team up to share how students of any age can start preparing NOW to apply for outside college scholarships that could lead to a low- or NO-cost college degree. Students, parents, grandparents, and other loved ones are encouraged to attend -- with notebook and pen -- and to share news of this actionable webinar far and wide.

Clarity for College Admissions & Scholarship Success + 5 Scholarship Opportunities17 Feb 202500:52:28

For over a decade, Lisa Marker-Robbins has helped nearly 4,000 high school students and young adults gain the insight, experiences, and confidence they need to embark on their post-high school path.

Along the way, however, she noticed an alarming trend: Teens struggled to find their true purpose - devastatingly impacting the student’s college admissions and scholarship success.

In our conversation, Lisa shared:

  • Why strong GPAs and high test scores may not be enough to gain admittance to your student’s dream college.
  • Why “knowing where you want to go” is critical for college admissions and scholarships.
  • Why your teen is NOT too young to get clarity on their future college major and career, and how most of the world is better preparing teens for career clarity.
  • The role of college major clarity in college admissions, based on actual data from the colleges.
  • Why high self-awareness is critical for a student’s future success with college admissions and scholarships.

Lisa has a complimentary video on “How to guide your teen to choose the right major, college, & career” that she created for parents (and students), and she’s given me permission to share this with my audience! In this, she’ll cover:

  • How flipping the script on the college admissions process can help ensure an on-time (and on budget!) graduation and a career your teen will love.

  • How to know *beyond any doubt* that your teen has chosen the right college, major, and career path, and hasn’t based their decision on luck, picked the “safe” option, or inadvertently restricted their potential.

  • How to ensure your teen’s senior year choices don't trap them in an unsuitable major or close the door on an opportunity no amount of money or persuasion can open.

Holiday Shopping for College-Bound Teens and Students:

I recommend waiting until your student has committed to a college before buying most of their dorm needs so you know exactly what the school allows and recommends. However, a few items are universally needed, no matter which college, dorm, or apartment your student ends up in. Here are a few of those items:

Dorms are notoriously dusty, moldy, and full of germs. A good air purifier is a great investment to help your student stay healthy at college.

Speaking of dirty, keep your kid’s feet clean with a pair of shower shoes.

It seems that no college student can survive these days without carrying their Stanley filled with their favorite beverage.

And, to keep their devices charged on the go, don’t forget a portable charger.

By the way, you support Scholarship GPS at no extra cost to you when you shop on Amazon using my affiliate link: https://amzn.to/3CPcoyO

This “gift” is for the parents and guardians…

When our kids turn 18, we lose the ability to legally help them in emergency situations unless the proper paperwork is in place. That is why I recommend Mama Bear Legal Forms Young Adult Power of Attorney. Be sure to read my recent article on why I’m so thankful that we have a Young Adult POA in place.

With the Power of Attorney documents, you can:

+ Make health care decisions if your student is incapacitated

+ Avoid court-appointed guardians

+ Gain access to medical records in case of an emergency

+ Interact with landlords and insurance companies

You can use my discount code, ScholarshipCoach,  to take 20% off the total price at Mama Bear Legal Forms.

Seven Personal Narrative Scholarships & The Foundational Element Essential for Scholarship Success18 Nov 202400:38:35

In last week’s episode, I shared my interview with Lisa Marker-Robbins, who has helped nearly 4,000 high school students and young adults gain the insight, experiences, and confidence they need to embark on their post-high school path.

In that conversation, we discussed why strong GPAs and high test scores may not be enough for your student to gain admittance to their dream college. Today, Lisa was kind enough to let me share an episode of her College and Career Clarity Podcast.

At many schools, like the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, prospective students must apply to a specific major when applying to college during the high school senior year. Since this is not standard at all colleges, it can be a confusing hurdle for many high schoolers and their families – but it doesn’t have to be. What does this mean for your teen? In this episode of the College and Career Clarity Podcast, Lisa Marker-Robbins speaks with Andy Borst, UIUC’s Director of Undergraduate Admissions, you’ll learn how college major-based admissions works and how to set your teen up to successfully navigate the process.

Although it can sometimes seem like it, admissions officers aren’t in the business of crushing your teen’s dreams. In fact, they want to make things possible for as many students as they can, and that’s where a college major-based admissions process can come into play. Each university can only accommodate a certain number of students in each program, so this type of application can help admissions staff focus on the students that are truly interested in the major and most likely to thrive.

When it comes to schools that admit by major, you might be surprised to learn that certain majors at these schools might be restricted to your student applying only as a 12th grader. For instance, if your child wants to study Computer Science at UIUC, they can only be admitted as a freshman or a transfer from another school. This means it’s crucial that your student does the work in high school to identify a college major that aligns to their wiring.

Andy warns not to try to take a shortcut into these highly competitive majors by applying for a different major in the hopes of transferring into your student’s desired field later. Trying to game the system isn’t wise. In these cases, your teen will be better off attending a different university where they have an assured start in their top choice major.

Highlights
  • What is college admission by major

  • What majors are among the most popular and therefore most competitive

  • How do restricted majors eliminate options for many high school students

  • When can your teen choose a second college major

  • Question to ask colleges about admission by major

Lisa has a complimentary video on “How to guide your teen to choose the right major, college, & career” that she created for parents (and students), and she’s given me permission to invite my people!

College Planning for High School Juniors Starts Now! + $90,000+ in Scholarship Opportunities07 Oct 202400:30:21

Is the cost of your child's college education keeping you up at night?

Is your college savings plan insufficient or non-existent?

Are you worried that your student will be paying back student loans for the rest of their life?

Those were my fears, too!

I didn't want my son to be burdened with student loans for 20+ years of his life. But, I had failed to save enough money to pay for his college degree. So, I coached him to win nearly $100,000 in scholarships, and he's now a debt-free college graduate!

Students don't need a perfect 4.0 GPA to win scholarships!

Average students can win scholarships if they know how.

Students don't have to come from a low-income household to win scholarships!

Most scholarships don't even ask about a student's financial situation.

Students don't have to be star athletes to win scholarships!

Sports scholarships make up a tiny fraction of the scholarships out there.

Having success with scholarships requires a plan, and that’s what Scholarship GPS provides.

The course features concise video lessons designed to seamlessly fit into your busy schedule, allowing you to learn at your own pace. Throughout the course, you'll acquire essential scholarship skills, including:

- How to identify the best scholarships based on your student's profile

- Tips and best practices for scholarship applications, essays, and projects

- The importance of crafting your student's Personal Narrative, a key element in winning scholarships

Additionally, you will have access to helpful tools such as:

- A scholarship tracking tool preloaded with quick and easy no-essay scholarships for immediate application

- A scholarship checklist template to ensure completion of applications

- An activity log to track your student's volunteer experiences

Now is your last chance to get lifetime access to the Scholarship GPS Course at the introductory rate of just $97.

Soon, the price of Scholarship GPS will more than double! So, don’t delay.

Go to www.scholarshipgps.com/scholarship-gps to start your scholarship journey today!

Katia Hua has dedicated her career to the field of education, working in various roles that have equipped her with the knowledge and expertise needed for education consulting. Throughout her professional journey, she has come to recognize the importance of not only guiding students through the college admissions process but also helping them discover their aspirations for the future. That's the major reason why she founded BosonEd.

I recently spoke with Katia about how high school juniors (Class of 2026) should start their college planning now (if they haven’t already). We also discussed some ways that younger students can begin preparing for college, as well.

In our conversation, Katia shared:

  • The timeline for standardized tests
  • Why she recommends students NOT take the SAT or ACT more than three times
  • How a student’s passions, perspectives, and achievements with extracurriculars affect college admissions
  • How high school freshmen, sophomores, and juniors should approach participating in extracurricular activities to build an application theme
  • A timeline for requesting letters of recommendation
  • A timeline for college visits and how to get the most out of them

You can connect with Katia by visiting BosonEd.org

Also, be sure to read the article Katia referenced in our discussion, “【Case study】What kind of student got into Princeton?'"

Class of 2026:

As Katia said in our discussion, high school juniors need to begin their college planning process right now. That includes planning how to pay for college, including scholarships.

Did you know a FULL RIDE scholarship is open for high school juniors right now?

Did you know that a different scholarship covering full tuition for any college in the country will be opening for juniors this spring?

These are just two of the many scholarship opportunities open to high school juniors.

My son won his first scholarship as a high school junior.

In the Scholarship GPS Course, you will find an interview with a high school junior who won a $35,000 scholarship!

So, while you need to start the college planning that Katia talked about, high school juniors also need to begin the scholarship process.

If you have a high school junior and would like to schedule a FREE consultation to learn about scholarships for high school juniors, drop me an email at Dave@NoDebtCollege.com

$20,000 Scholarship Opportunity for the Class of 2025 - No Essay To Apply; 5 Other Scholarships; Class of 2025, Don't Delay; Easy Weekender Scholarship26 Aug 202400:12:40

Every year, I see the same thing: high school seniors who find every reason not to apply for scholarships. Here is what one mom said in an online forum when asked what she wishes she had done differently during her child’s senior year:

"I wish I had pushed my HS senior to commit to applying for scholarships. Later in her senior year, she found all kinds of ways to avoid putting in the effort."- Mom of Class of 2024 Grad.

If your student is in the Class of 2025, they must start applying for scholarships immediately. Otherwise, here’s the list of “reasons” that they won’t be able to start later:

September: “School just started. I need to adjust to my new schedule before working on scholarships.”

October: “I need to work on my college applications and essays before working on scholarships.”

November: “It’s Thanksgiving! Don’t I deserve a break?!”

December: “I need to fill out the FAFSA before working on scholarships.”

January: “I need to adjust to my new spring class schedule before working on scholarships.”

February: “I need to get my college acceptance before I start working on scholarships.”

March: “My spring sport takes too much time to work on scholarships.”

April: “I need to do all the graduation prep before I work on scholarships.”

May: “Prom prep is taking up all of my free time. I can’t work on scholarships.”

June: “All of the good scholarships are closed.”

Your student’s list of “reasons” will vary, but you get the point: Students can always find a “reason” that they can’t apply for scholarships.

However, it's important to remember that the earlier they start, the more opportunities they will have. So, let's not let these “reasons” hold us back. Let's start applying for scholarships now and make the most of the opportunities available.

The hardest part of scholarships is getting started. But, Class of 2025 students who start now will not only get over this hump but also enjoy these benefits:

  • They will build a portfolio of scholarship essays that they can reuse for many more scholarship applications throughout their senior year.
  • They will have the experience and skills needed to be better scholarship applicants in the spring when their local scholarship opportunities (usually) open up.
  • They could win one of the $20,000, $30,000, $50,000, or other high-dollar scholarships open to seniors this fall!

It's crucial to understand the urgency of the situation. Did you know that the Class of 2025 has already missed a FULL TUITION and a FULL RIDE scholarship opportunity? Every day a student delays is another lost scholarship opportunity.

Perhaps you and your student are willing to start, but you aren’t sure how. The Scholarship GPS Course will get you and your student up to speed quickly. Here are just some of the highlights from the course:

  • How and where to find scholarships
  • How to prioritize the right scholarships
  • How to build a student’s Personal Narrative: The Key to Scholarship Success
  • How to respond to the most common scholarship essay topics

Plus, throughout the fall, I will be adding lessons on some of the biggest scholarship opportunities for the Class of 2025 - scholarships that virtually every senior should apply for!

The tools, tactics and strategies I share in the Scholarship GPS Course are the same ones I used to coach my own son to over $95,000 in scholarships, to coach Isabella to 14 scholarship wins, and to coach Talon to over $100,000 in scholarships!

7 Steps to a Terrible College Essay, a HUGE Scholarship for Class of 2025, and 5 Other Scholarship Opportunities05 Aug 202400:45:07

Mike is also the founding President of the Board of Directors of the National Test Prep Association, the creator of the TestBright SAT & ACT curriculum system and Roots2Words vocabulary program, and the co-host of the college admissions industry podcast Tests and the Rest.

I am a strong advocate for the work of Lisa Marker-Robbins and Flourish Coaching. For over a decade, Lisa has helped over 3,600 high school students and young adults gain the insight, experiences, and confidence they need to embark on their post-high school path.

Along the way, however, she noticed an alarming trend: Teens struggled to find their true purpose–and the fallout wasn’t pretty. There was a lot of uncertainty around college majors and future careers. As a result, students weren’t graduating college on time, and even when they did, they often left college underemployed or unemployed altogether.

From my perspective, gaining college and career clarity not only sets up the student to thrive in college and puts them on the path to future career success, but it’s also beneficial for finding and winning scholarships. More than half of the private scholarships my son won, both in high school and while in college, were directly related to his college major. The other scholarships, while open to students of all majors, were still won due to his compelling Personal Narrative - his story of his future plans, with the ability to point to past achievements related to those plans.

Whether your child is in high school or college, if they are unclear about their future career or even their college major, I can think of no better investment than to look into the programs that Lisa and Flourish Coaching offer. To learn more, go to http://www.FlourishCoachingCo.com/NoDebtMajors

Talking to Our Kids About Money - Episode 81729 Jun 202400:18:35

Danny Kofke worked as a school teacher for 18 years; he has written several personal finance books, including A Bright Financial Future: Teaching Kids about Money Pre-K Through College for Lifelong Success. Danny has appeared on numerous national television shows, including Fox & Friends, CNN's Newsroom, The 700 Club, and MSNBC Live. Danny has been interviewed on over 600 radio shows and featured in publications such as The Wall Street Journal, Huff Post, and Money Magazine. Danny is one of my colleagues at Mentoro, where he serves as a Motivational Mentor.

In our conversation, Danny shares his views on:

  • How to lead young people to be better money managers and achieve financial success, and how social media can make that harder.

  • How to help young people understand the value of work, budgeting, and long-term goals, and how your actions as a parent speak louder than words.

  • Whether teens can truly understand the impact of student loans and how to have conversations about debt.

  • Whether teens and college students should have credit cards.

  • And much more…

To connect with Danny, go to MyMentoro.com and check out Danny’s podcast, Run With The Bulls.

Danny mentioned that, unlike when he and I were in college, students today need to be much more clear about their major and future career plans, and at a much younger age. If your student is unsure of their path, check out the fantastic programs offered by Flourish Coaching. Having college major and career clarity will not only help with college admissions, but it’s a key part of scholarship success. Go to FlourishCoachingCo.com/NoDebtMajors to learn more.

"I'm so thankful I stumbled across you, Dave, and decided to reach out for your free consultation. Your willingness to create a plan that fit our needs was a tremendous help. As we've worked together through this past year, the personal touch, quick responses, and thoughtful advice you've given for and beyond scholarship applications have been invaluable. My son and I personally recommend anyone going through the college process to seek your help. It has been a relief and given us peace to have you on our side while we navigate this journey." - Audria

Insider Strategies for College Applications + 5 New Scholarship Opportunities20 Jan 202500:38:30

Dr. John Durante has dedicated over 30 years to education as a teacher and administrator. Since 2010, he has served as the principal of Syosset High School, playing a key role in its recognition as one of the top high schools in the country. Under his leadership, the school has earned numerous accolades for its academic achievements, and its alumni continue to reflect its commitment to excellence.

His passion for guiding students through the college admissions process, especially after helping his daughters navigate their own journeys, inspired him to launch The College Admissions Process Podcast in 2022. The podcast has since become a valuable resource for students, parents, and college counselors.

Based on insights from over 250 episodes of The College Admissions Process Podcast, John Durante shares expert advice straight from the people who know the process best, college admissions professionals, in his book, Straight From The Admissions Office: Insider Strategies for College Applications.

In our conversation, John and I discussed:

  • How his insights as a principal and his role as a father inspired him to help families gain inside knowledge for the college admissions process

  • What students and parents need to do as they prepare for the college admissions process

  • Understanding the importance of institutional priorities in the role of admissions

  • Guidelines for building a “balanced list” of colleges to apply to

  • The importance of discussing the financial aspect of college with your student

  • The power of talking to your college admissions rep

John has kindly offered to give away five copies of his book, Straight From The Admissions Office: Insider Strategies for College Applications.

To enter the drawing, go to www.ScholarshipGPS.com/Durante

You will then be able to download your FREE copy of The College Planning Timeline for High School Students, presented by Scholarship GPS and Chariot Learning.

When you download the FREE College Planning Timeline, you will also be entered to win a FREE copy of John Durante's book, "Straight From The Admissions Office: Insider Strategies for College Applications."

Offer Ends February 14, 2025, at 11:59 pm EST. Five winners will be chosen at random.
