422: The Science Behind Why We Do What We do22 Aug 202300:58:02
In this episode of The Savvy Dentist Podcast Dr Jesse Green is joined by Carlos Davidovich.

Carlos has a background as a medical practitioner for 20 years in Argentina where he became fascinated by neuroscience. Carlos is now a professor of neuro management at the University of New York, and also in Prague in the Czech Republic.

In today’s episode, Dr Jesse & Carlos discuss ‘why we do the things we do’.

Utilising Carlos’ understanding of the neuroscience of success, you can delve deeper into your own habits and characteristics, and also gain understanding of the motivations and actions of both your team members, and patients.

  • [11:38] - We are social beings … understanding how the brain works allows us to understand the external world regarding human behavior.
  • [19:24] -  The hardest thing about running your business … is people. How do we strike that right balance between being an effective leader and achieving goals, while also managing our team dynamics well enough to feel like we are caring, empathetic and supportive?
  • [25:17] - One of the good things about being a highly sensitive leader … is intuition. When you can feel things that perhaps others can't feel. So what is the role of that ‘intuition’ in leadership.
  • [39:08] - Why is common sense so uncommon? Is there a neuroscience explanation of common sense?
  • [43:41] - Some of your team are more creative than others … Is creativity a skill that can be taught?

421: Creating Your Wealth Plan15 Aug 202300:59:44
In this episode of The Savvy Dentist Podcast Dr Jesse Green is joined by Tony Bradshaw. Tony is an expert when it comes to personal finance and coaching people to become millionaires.

Dr. Jesse and Tony discuss the mindset of becoming a millionaire, being clear about your vision, the steps on how to do it, but also your ‘purpose’ and ‘why’.
Tony shares so many valuable tips to help you in your own journey to create wealth.

  • [08:32] - How to make your plan to become a millionaire, and create a plan to execute your plan.
  • [10:15] - What does the decision mean, when you choose to become a millionaire?
  • [21:08] - What is money? And what does it truly mean to you?
  • [24:24] - How to become a millionaire internally … before becoming one externally.
  • [32:16] - How to become a dreamer. (if you're not already one)
  • [38:05] - What are the steps to transform your life from a financial perspective?

423: Buying Back Your Time08 Aug 202300:22:51

In this episode of The Savvy Dentist podcast, Dr. Jesse Green discusses the most precious resource we have … our time.

When it comes to running a business, one of the most common things that dentists say is that they want to make more money. And then once they're making ‘more’ money, then their desire turns to them having more time in their life, with more enjoyment, meaning and satisfaction.

How do we get the balance right?

If you are feeling burned and stressed out, then this is the episode you need to listen to.

  • [4:20] - Re-engineer your business and create a business that you love.
  • [5:38] - Who to hire, and when!
  • [6:22] - Internal training vs. external training. The pros and cons. Which works best and creates the most profit.
  • [15:23] - If you want to free up your clinical time, hire an associate dentist, or a dental hygienist or therapist.
  • [18:08] - How to continue to grow your revenue within your practice.

420: How to Master Uncertainty01 Aug 202300:50:36
In this episode of The Savvy Dentist Podcast Dr Jesse Green is joined by Matt Watkinson.

Matt Watkinson is an author of three books.
The first one is all around the 10 Principles behind Great Customer Experiences.
Matt’s second book, The Grid, gives you the Decision Making Tools for Business.
And his third book, which is the topic for this episode of The Savvy Dentist Podcast, is about Mastering Uncertainty.

We live in an inherently uncertain world, and there's all manner of events happening at any one moment. We need to become comfortable with the idea that making decisions in an uncertain world is going to have some successes from time to time, but equally some failures.

In this episode Matt explains how we all can become really comfortable with that relationship with uncertainty.

Matt Watkinson has worked with all manner of organisations. From the FBI … all the way through to Microsoft. Matt’s hypothesis is that “success is correlated to your relationship, or how comfortable you are with uncertainty.”

Matt & Dr. Jesse discuss what uncertainty actually is. They talk about the biases that we all have. And they talk about why we are compelled to seek certainty.

  • [14:18] - How is your relationship with uncertainty? Do you ever feel afraid when making a decision or when having to step into something unknown?
  • [22:32] - People like to think that we're operating in some kind of order. Uncertainty scares most people because they don't like to know that no one really knows what's going to happen and that there's a whole lot of randomness in the world.
  • [25:44] - So how do we make decisions in what is predominantly an uncertain world?
  • [33:05] - Your relationship with uncertainty affects how you perceive Success … and Failure. Unless something works out to the letter, exactly as the plan predicted, then some people see that as failure. How you see ‘success’ can be directly related to you becoming more comfortable with your relationship with uncertainty.
  • [39:11] - Have a healthy and enlightened relationship with failure and not getting what we want straight away. You need to be extremely tenacious because when things are a numbers game, your numbers might not come up straight away, so you need to keep rolling the dice.

419: How to Make Success a Habit25 Jul 202300:35:44
In this episode of The Savvy Dentist Podcast Dr Jesse Green is joined by Dr. Gina Cleo.

Dr. Gina Cleo is an expert when it comes to habits. With a a PhD in habit research, what she doesn't know about habits isn't worth knowing.

In today's episode Dr Jesse & Dr Cleo discuss what habits actually are, and how to differentiate habits from behaviours.

They dig deep into the psychology and neuroscience behind how habits are formed, how to install healthy habits, and how to uninstall those habits that no longer serve us.

The pair also talk about the difference between habits and addiction, how to install workplace habits, how to create a culture based on the habitual way of doing things in an intentional way rather than by default.

Dr. Gina Cleo is one of the world’s leading experts in habits and is passionate about translating scientific evidence into simple, actionable strategies to help improve health, wellness, mindset, and lifestyle-related habits – long-term.

  • [06:17] - Most people know what to do, but they don’t always do what they know is best. Why? The biggest factor is ‘their values’. How much value we might place on something. So if somebody places a lot of value on their dental hygiene, they're going to put in the effort to floss their teeth and brush twice a day, but if they value something like their time more, they don't value their dental hygiene as much.
  • [08:12] - What is the difference between a habit, and a behaviour? Because they are very different!
  • [13:20] - The secret sauce to creating a habit that sticks and creates lasting change is consistency. Dr Cleo explains how this happens.
  • [17:43] - Our brain is only capable of making up to three changes at one time. However the research suggests it is more productive for creating change and forming a new habit to simply focus on one thing at a time. High achievers struggle to focus on one habit forming thing at a time as they generally feel it is tedious and not enough of a challenge.
  • [20:53] - What's the relationship between habit and addiction?
  • [25:00] - If we want to install organisational habits, and we've got a team of five or 10 or 50 or a hundred people. How do we get all our team onto the same page?
  • [28:47] - We need to be behaviorally flexible, your team will respond really differently to different styles of communication. It’s important to understand your team and understand how they're going to respond to the way that you speak to them. If you automate the way that you interact with your staff, it's not going to work.

418: Exponential Practice Growth18 Jul 202300:37:26
In this episode of The Savvy Dentist Podcast Dr Jesse Green is joined by Lynn Whitbeck.

Lynn Whitbeck is the Queen of Sales and has been working with dentists, orthodontists, and other people within the dental specialties to shorten their sales cycle.

In this episode Lynn lays out a step-by-step for referrals, reviews, and recommendations.

Business owners and entrepreneurs hire Lynn to ignite winning sales, because most are chasing down leads, lack client retention, conversion, and profit. So, Lynn helps eliminate the lengthy chaotic sales cycle to ignite your sales and unleash lasting profits.

Bottom line, don't make this harder than it has to be.

  • [6:17] - When your team starts asking for reviews and referrals at the right time in the patient journey … you will start filling your chairs and your practice with patients who come in already trusting you because they've been referred or recommended by a personal friend.
  • [19:26] - When you have people calling in because they were referred by a friend or family, they've already made the decision in their mind. That's the first soft sell. They've taken action and it's so much easier when they're in the chair to get the next level of Yes.
  • [24:18] - How to coach your team with specific examples of what to say and how and when to say it. (pens and paper out!)
  • [29:15] - Referrals are 93% more effective than any other form of marketing. The number one thing is getting your team on board with this because they're the ones who are constantly interacting with the patients. Lynn explains how you can do this effectively.

Kylie works with blue chip and established companies to improve the productivity and performance of leaders and their teams.

  • [6:48] - You can generally feel confident about your skills and abilities within the four walls of your dental surgery. We've spent many years practicing those things. Then all of a sudden we go, you know what, I'm gonna open a business. How hard can it be?  And it turns out it can be pretty tricky, right? There's no learning around business, there's no learning about leadership, there's no learning about people development. Where does leadership come unstuck? Where do people typically stumble? What are the common pitfalls or mishaps?
  • [12:38] - What sort of practices and skills need to be developed as we figure out our way on this leadership pathway?
  • [24:52] - How do we lead ourselves so that we can be that example for others?
  • [31:30] - The power of ‘thinking time’. Taking time-out regularly to look and think about your people and business, is the single most important thing you can do. It’s what all top leaders schedule into each day.
  • [36:47] - Creating a great culture within your practice is critical. “Great culture eats strategy for breakfast”. So what ways can you work on developing an engaged and enthusiastic team?

  • [21:15] - What are the benefits of building capacity across your team?
  • [28:54] - We often see organisations with lovely well-worded value statements posted on the walls throughout the hallways. But where does grit and determination come into the capacity equation? Why is it when things get hard, some people roll their sleeves up and get on with it, while others check out and go home?
  • [37:32] - A lot of people think about culture as something warm and fuzzy, as opposed to a vehicle for achieving outcomes.  So, how do we build a culture of performance in a team, from a business sense?
  • [42:18] - Three business performance tips from Robert Glazer that could transform or revolutionise your thinking, and ultimately your business.

414: The Leadership Challenge20 Jun 202300:39:12
As a practice owner, you've probably wondered… how do I become a better leader?

If you've ever had those thoughts, then you're going to really resonate with this episode.

Professor Barry Posner has studied leadership and entrepreneurship for over 30 years. He's authored over 12 books on the topic. One of those books is called The Leadership Challenge, and has sold over 3 million copies. Barry has consulted to companies like Apple and Amazon and WD-40 to name just a few. He's incredibly well respected in the field of leadership. And in this episode Dr. Jesse and Barry talk about his five key practices that are useful and helpful for every leader.

We know that leadership is a skill that can be learned. We know that there are basic principles that govern leadership and whether the context shifts and changes from one day to the next or into the future, we know that these principles will serve you very well. So in this episode, we're going to unpack those five principles.

  • [6:42] - There is a difference between ‘leadership’ and someone who considers themselves a ‘leader’ due to their title. Understanding this difference will allow you to grow and serve your team on every level.
  • [16:34] - Communication can build a connection with your team. It’s hard for anyone to follow you if they don’t understand who ‘you’ are, what your values are.
  • [19:05] - Many practice owners struggle with growing and learning leadership. Trusting people and allowing them to feel capable can be a powerful first step in growing your leadership skill.
  • [23:33] - How can you identify if your team doesn't exhibit trust, and what signals will your team show when they do feel trusted?
  • [28:56] - It’s a myth that "it’s lonely at the top”. It’s only lonely if you isolate yourself from your team. When you openly communicate and become vulnerable with your team it can open up an empathy that strengthens our human-to-human connection.
  • [34:06] - How will leadership change in the future and what can you do to prepare and grow into the future as a better, stronger, more trustworthy leader to your team?

413: Business Lessons from the Wiggles13 Jun 202300:37:50
Greg Page is possibly best known as the original yellow Wiggle. But in 2020, he made headlines after suffering a cardiac arrest on stage.

At the end of a performance by the group raising funds for bushfire relief, one of his arteries blocked 100% and caused a sudden cardiac arrest. If not for the quick thinking and life saving skills of bystanders, chances are Greg would have died.

His life was saved because of CPR and an AED at Castle Hill RSL Club that was brought to the stage, and used to revert his heart to a normal rhythm in time for paramedics to arrive and stabilise him until he received lifesaving surgery.

Upon waking up in recovery, Greg was told that 90% people who suffer a sudden cardiac don't make it out of hospital alive, which shocked Greg.

Now, Greg is on a mission to educate others about the importance of knowing CPR, and making AED’s more VISIBLE, ACCESSIBLE AND ACTIONABLE in our communities.

  • [4:50] - How can the business lessons from a children's music group who have toured the world, be applied to your Dental Practice?
  • [10:45] - The transition from Dentist to Business owner can be daunting. Greg explains how The Wiggles went from Band to Brand - and built a global business brand with no business experience.
  • [18:36] - How can you leverage your support staff and create your own Dorothy The Dinosaur?
  • [25:16] - Having a heart attack and cardiac arrest on stage changed Greg’s life forever.
  • [31:39] - AED’s are incredibly important. Greg has a foundation ‘Heart Of The Nation’ that notifies the community and allows you to share your AED with anyone who may need it in an emergency.

412: Mentoring Young Dentists06 Jun 202300:37:21
If you're a practice owner and you've thought about hiring young dentists recently, then I guarantee the topic of mentorship has probably factored into those conversations. Young dentists seem to be graduating, requiring, and requesting more mentorship than ever before.

The opportunity exists for practice owners to use mentoring programs to attract and retain the best and brightest young dentists in our practice, but there are some challenges … and those challenges typically occur when there's miscommunication about what's on offer and what's expected.

Sometimes young dentists might feel like they're signing up to a practice that has a great mentoring program and they are disappointed about what's on offer.

From the practice owner's point of view, they feel like they're giving up a lot of their time, energy and expertise to train a dentist that might stay or may not stay.

And so there's a gap; a bridge that needs to be spanned.

In this episode of The Savvy Dentist Podcast we close this gap and show you how to get everyone on that same page.

Dr. Camelia Maris and Dr. Jeff Kho join Dr. Jesse Green, and together they explain what good mentoring looks like, how to structure it, what are the challenges that young dentists face as they start their career, and what are the challenges that practice owners face in trying to help the young dentists get started in their career.

Camelia and Jeff both have a wonderful broad perspective. They're looking at things from both sides of the fence. How do we support the young dentists? How do we give them the best start in their career? And how do we acknowledge that it's their responsibility to be self-reliant while also putting in place some of the building blocks that will give them that start that they're looking for?

Be sure to register for The Dental Summit here.

  • [4:50] - Where are young dentists struggling the most? And as practice owners, how can we best help them?
  • [15:01] - The word ‘mentoring’ is used a lot currently, and often is a recruitment tool when interviewing young dental candidates. So what IS ‘mentoring’ and how differently can it be perceived by young dental graduates, and dental practice owners?
  • [19:20] - How to help young dentists flip their assumption that mentoring is a one way path. It’s important that they take responsibility for their personal growth.
  • [24:07] - If you do not have the time to put together a curated mentor program, there are outsource options?

411: HR Compliance - What Every Practice Owner Needs to Know30 May 202300:36:46
In this episode of The Savvy Dentist Podcast, we're talking about a topic that every single practice owner needs to know, understand, and appreciate.

That topic is HR compliance.

We know that when HR goes well, our team is fantastic, everyone feels supported, and things run smoothly. But when things don't go well, you can find yourself in the midst of time consuming, emotionally draining, and costly issues.

Sally Murphy from Purple Playground joins Dr. Jesse Green to help us understand what practice owners need to know about HR compliance to avoid issues before they arise.

Sally Murphy is an expert in all things HR. She's worked her whole professional life in this sphere for both large companies, and now with small to medium enterprises including many dental practices.

Sally is here to let us know what we need to have in terms of policies and procedures, and how to stay on the right side of the compliance line.

  • [4:54] - In a small dental practice business, people are our brand and we know it’s important to surround ourselves with a great team. So as dentists, what do we need to do to bring the best out of people and what structures and policies do we need to have in place?
  • [10:28] - So if the Fair Work Ombudsman comes knocking, what do you do?
  • [15:43] - What sort of policies must we have in place that allow our businesses to be ‘fit for purpose’ and are ‘bespoke for our dental industry’.
  • [26:13] - Creating an environment for our team to succeed can definitely support the policies our business has in place. Build culture by having one-on-one conversations with your team regularly.
  • [28:53] - Record keeping is key. What documents and policies are crucial, where do we keep them, what is the best way to manage these processes?

410: Disney Leadership Lessons23 May 202300:47:11
Today, we're having a conversation about one of the greatest business people ever; Walt Disney.

Many of us are familiar with Disney. Whether it's his Disney World, Disneyland, all the movies, cartoon characters, and in recent times, the Disney+ streaming service.

But very few of us know the story of how Walt Disney and his brother, Roy dreamed of then built the empire that we now know today as the Disney Corporation.

So joining us today is Jeffrey Barnes, a Disney expert who has studied Walt Disney from a very young age.  Jeff has dedicated his entire life to understanding the Disney Corporation, the Disney family and the experiential ecosystem they've built.

In this episode, we talk all about the qualities that made Walt the great businessman we know him as today. What kind of person was he? What allowed him to achieve such phenomenal success? What were his early setbacks and how did they shape him? What were the consequences of those setbacks? And how did it create the Disney that we know today?

  • [7:30] - What kind of man was Walt Disney and how did his young years forge his character and resilience?
  • [11:51] - A real life story from rags to to riches that will inspire you and prove that we all have an inner Walt Disney.
  • [20:50] - The modern day leadership lessons we can learn from Walt and apply in our dental practice today.
  • [28:29] - It takes a fair amount of courage for someone to start any kind of business, including a dental practice. It’s easy to be courageous when you know something will work, but you have to draw on different skills to find that courage when there is massive uncertainty associated with your decisions and goals.
  • [35:21] - Walt always wanted to be moving forward, and this lesson shows how to grow your business. Scale your successful business for bigger profits.
  • [42:45] - If you want to channel some Walt Disney into your own practice today, here are 3 easy tips to apply instantly.

Today we're talking about your people, your business policies, and the procedures you can initiate, plus we’ll cover ‘things that can go wrong’ in a dental practice - and you'd be surprised!

It's often something very simple, that has a catastrophic impact. It could be as simple as clicking on a dodgy email … or sometimes a whole lot more!

We want to make sure that you know what to do, and how to handle it should a cyber attack ever happen within your family or business.

  • [7:39] - If you are gathering data on a person, such as a patient, then you have something that is ‘valuable’ to someone else. You have to accept that there is a risk to your business based on what you are doing online. How much of a risk profile will depend of these key factors.

  • [8:56] - Be specific in your employment documentation about what you expect from your staff. In the modern world, you need to clearly outline what is considered acceptable online behaviour. Susan describes situations of brand alignment that has gone horribly wrong.
  • [20:36] - There are two primary types of hackers; who are they and how can they infiltrate your business?
  • [29:18] - Dr Jesse explains a real story when The Savvy Dentist business was hacked and the lessons and step the business took to protect itself.

408: How to Create a Human Centred Experience in a High Tech World09 May 202300:42:58
As dentists, we all understand and appreciate the value of a great patient experience - one with a strong human connection.

When we connect with patients  emotionally, we  develop empathy, understand them, and get inside their head so we can appreciate what they're going through as they experience our services.

In this episode of The Savvy Dentist Podcast, Dr. Jesse chats with digital strategist, Chris Hood. Chris has been within the film & TV industry, the computer gaming industry, as well as working for Google. He brings a really deep understanding of technology coupled with human psychology, and how to integrate the two for the best customer experience.

Jesse and Chris discuss why we do the things we do, and what we need as humans to create a great dental experience. They talk about the modern day intersection of both a human experience with a technology experience and how we can streamline and simplify our patients' experience of our practices.

  • [5:42] - What is a ‘human centered’ experience and how might it look for our patient?
  • [8:23] - How can we make the patient experience better and more human?
  • [20:38] - Why it’s incredibly valuable and important for you to understand how technology changes the way our patients interact with our businesses.

  • [28:40] - How will Artificial Intelligence (A.I) affect our businesses in years to come?
  • [36:13] - At the end of the day, remember to have a strong empathetic approach to ensure you have a ‘human centered’ patient experience that can never be replicated by technology.

In today's conversation Dom & Jesse discuss self-leadership, how we need to show up, and how to identify and develop great people within our team and give them confidence in their skills and abilities.

If we want to go FAST in our business, we can go it alone, but if you want to go FAR in your business, then you’ll need to do that involving other people.

400: A Sales Masterclass from Australia's Top Salesman07 Mar 202300:41:06
In this, our 400th episode, Dr. Jesse Green is joined by John Roca, arguably one of the greatest salesman in Australia. John knows people, and explains how his structure for running a car dealership, can be applied to running a dental practice.

John has advised organisations about the need to encourage a customer centric culture within business and develop strong processes in order to deliver benchmark results.

John believes your dental practice’s success comes from the willingness and culture of your team to anticipate customers' needs, and deliver a ‘promise’ … as opposed to promising to deliver

In this episode we discuss:

  • [5:04] - Landing in Australia as a six year old not able to speak English, John explains how his migrant background helped shape his drive, work ethic, and persistence to succeed.
  • [9:56] - If you love serving people, John believes that, with passion, you can build a business.
  • [13:36] - Having a deep appreciation and empathy for people who walk into your dental practice and understanding their dreams, hopes, and aspirations, can be the difference to a successful practice. John explains how a car dealership can be similar to your practice, and what processes you can model or duplicate.
  • [17:01] - Designing every single touch-point for a patient or customer creates their ‘experience’, and so it’s important to have all your team well-trained and aligned to create exceptional service. Create the environment for your ‘guest’.
  • [18:42] - John explains his ‘EVOLUTION process’ which is his 10-steps to land a sale. The edge is ,that it's not about delivering the 10-steps in one day! Creating a customer experience over the evolution of the patient, that all your team are on-board to deliver, is essential to the ‘10-step EVOLUTION’ process working successfully.
  • [24:24] - Word of mouth is the best marketing you'll ever do. If someone has a bad experience they'll tell 10 people, and if they have a good experience, they'll tell 2. They might not buy today, so be focused on the future sale.
  • [30:03] - So, how do you implement and train all your team to create a 10-step culture so that everyone is aligned and understands the DNA of your business?
  • [33:45] - You get 'one shot' at a first impression, so where do you start today if you are liking the concept of developing a 10-step evolution process. John explains his 5-bomb theory.

395: A Practice Owners Guide to Dealing with Wins17 Jan 202300:48:59
In today’s episode, Jesse sits down with good mate and repeat guest, Dr Tyson Franklin to discuss how you can navigate the wins (and losses) of your business practice.

Tyson is a successful Podiatrist, author, business coach and host of his own podcast Podiatry Legends, and also joined us on  episodes 14, 95, 150 and 355 of The Savvy Dentist Podcast, so be sure to have a listen to the back-catalog once you’ve finished listening to this week’s episode.

In this episode we discuss:

  • [1:09] - Why do we over-value our losses in life, yet under-value our wins in our day-to-day?
  • [4:13] - As dentists, we are ‘perfectionists’ by nature and are trained and rewarded to find fault, through training, through our business. We are honed to what is ‘not right’.
  • [7:23] - Jesse & Tyson discuss examples of when we can be better at understanding 'the wins'.
  • [10:53] - If you never take ‘the swing’, you’ll never get the ‘wins’. The key is not to take too long before you take the swing … and then the next swing … and then the next …
  • [13:55] - Book mention: Thinking in Bets - Making Smarter Decisions When You Don't Have All the Facts (Annie Duke)
  • [17:03] - The reason people keep on hanging on to losses is because they don’t want to admit that they’ve made a mistake. And it will hold them back from making the next decision! “Use past mistakes as a learning for future decisions.”
  • [22:03] - A good decision can still lead to a poor outcome. So what can you do in this situation?
  • [30:47] - So if you've had a few things go wrong, and are a little bit 'gun-shy', what can you do to get back to making decisions and moving towards more wins?
  • [42:16] - Remember, every big business you know of today … once started as a ‘small’ business. And every big business still makes mistakes as the company grows larger.
  • [43:39] - key take-away: The people who do well in their business practice, over-value their wins, and under-value their losses as a general habit.

In today's episode Dr Jesse Green explains how to launch your 2023 with intent and focus. You've had your rest, and now it's time to get simple-minded and focussed in our execution of things, and as a result, we'll go further faster in achieving our 2023 goals.

Ho to optimise your practice in terms of revenue, clinical work, and lifestyle. Get clarity ... then you'll be focussed.
  • [7:37] - The importance of your daily habits cannot be understated. If we don't create our habits by design, often we'll fall in to bad habits by default. A great book on habits is The Power of Habits - Charles Duhigg.
  • [12:07] - Nothing changes without targeted action and so we have to look at our time and what we're spening time on. What do you want to do less of, and what do you want to do more of with your time? We all have the same 168 hours every week, so it's important to list what where you want your energy to flow for the best outcome you desire.

496: From Zero to Market Leader – Bob Ansett’s Business Playbook22 Apr 202500:33:04

Welcome to The Savvy Dentist Podcast with Dr. Jesse Green, where we explore the intersection of dentistry, business, and personal growth to help you create a practice and a life you love.

In this episode of The Savvy Dentist Podcast, Dr. Jesse Green we have Australian Business Royalty … Bob Ansett.

Bob Ansett is a renowned Australian entrepreneur, best known as the founder of Budget Rent a Car in Australia. Born in 1933, Bob grew up in a family deeply connected to business and innovation. He took Budget from a small operation in 1965 to a nationwide success, revolutionising the car rental industry in Australia through exceptional customer service and innovative marketing. His leadership and commitment to customer satisfaction made Budget a household name before he eventually stepped away from the company in the late 1980s.

Bob is the son of the legendary Australian aviation pioneer Sir Reginald Ansett, the founder of Ansett Airlines. Reginald built one of Australia's most iconic airline companies, which operated for over 65 years before ceasing operations in 2001. His entrepreneurial spirit and determination were key influences in Bob’s career, shaping his approach to business and leadership. Despite their shared passion for innovation, Bob carved out his own path, distinguishing himself in the car rental industry rather than following directly in his father’s footsteps.

Beyond his business achievements, Bob Ansett has been an influential figure in Australian corporate culture, advocating for strong customer service, ethical business practices, and employee empowerment. He has authored books on business and leadership and continues to inspire entrepreneurs with his insights on resilience and adaptation. His legacy, like his father’s, is one of pioneering spirit and a commitment to excellence in service and business.

  1. [02:53] - Starting his first business. The challenges, and the triumphs.
  2. [07:41] - Bob suggests that you NEVER say ‘no’ to a customer!

393: Leadership from the heart03 Jan 202300:33:44
Author, Coach, Founder and CEO, of Aim to Win, Wade Thomas has over 25 years of professional experience in large and small business leadership, business strategy, and individual development.

With over 20 years of professional experience in executive human resources, leadership development, and business strategies, Wade has experienced firsthand what makes businesses work.

Wade embraces uniqueness while challenging the status quo. He uses imagination to discover better ways to build entrepreneurs’ businesses and to help them make a difference. Wade believes that growth comes from experimentation, and having the courage to accept and learn from failure. He believes in being nimble enough to change direction quickly when needed to make the most of new opportunities.

Wade believes that not only do compassion and empathy have a place in the business world but that they are integral parts of long term success.

In this episode we discuss:
  • [6:17] - Having a growth mindset approach to you business can create change in your business practice, as Wade explains.
  • [8:32] - So what is ‘the leadership gap’ and how does it contribute to business. How strong can your business be if your team feel that you care about them?
  • [10:24] - Being busy in the day-to-day running of your practice, Wade explains how you can develop your team so that they feel more emotionally connected to the business.
  • [13:18] - The abilities of your team are only limited by the ability to grow your self first. Self Leadership is the process of YOU getting better … and in-turn the business and your team will grow.
  • [16:46] - Empathy is the deepest level of understanding and will allow you to lead your team. In addition, your team ‘see’ empathy, they see that you care, and they will go the extra mile and help you take your business to new levels of growth.
  • [19:08] - Having empathy and compassion isn’t about being a doormat … it’s about stretching and pushing people, it’s about making hard decisions. One of the most compassionate things you can do for your team is to help them to reach their potential. People don’t reach their own potential if you give them easy goals and give them feedback that they don’t want to hear.
  • [22:09] - How does ‘courage’ apply when in a leadership position?
  • [24:05] - So we know it’s good to be vulnerable as a leader, so when is ‘too much’ vulnerability not as effective? If we share ‘too much’ can it still be effective?
  • [27:35] - Some of the key learnings Wade has from over 25 years in leadership in many different sized organisations.
