Shiori Statter - Running the Tokyo Backyard Ultra11 Feb 202400:29:26

Send us a text

Shiori Statter is one of three women who ran the Tokyo Backyard Ultra this past November.Shiori managed to clock up an impressive 100km, meaning she ran the backyard loop for 15 hours. Shiori is also a professional in the fitness industry. Shiori also takes on challenges such as starting the New Year with a 100km run around her block!

" The backyard ultra or last one standing is a form of ultramarathon race where competitors must consecutively run the distance of 6.706 kilometres (4.167 mi) in less than one hour, which is a pace of 100 miles per 24 hours. The race is over when only one runner remains to complete a lap. This runner is marked as the winner and only finisher, with all other runners receiving a "DNF" (Did Not Finish). The runner who completes the second-most laps in a race is often referred to as the "assist", in the sense that their effort is ultimately what determines how long the race is allowed to continue--there is no predefined end length or time in a backyard ultra, as long as multiple runners can complete each loop within an hour." ~ source Wikipedia.

Brett Florens is a well-renowned photographer as well as an accomplished runner. Brett started running when he was in the Police during a 6-week training camp which kickstarted his fitness and weight loss. Brett enjoyed being fit so much that he used the momentum from that camp to stay fit. His running journey progressed from running 5k's 3 times a week to a half marathon and then a full marathon. Fast forward 30 years later and Brett has completed over 25 Comrades, 10 Two Oceans Ultra Marathons and over 120 marathons all over the world. Brett is also the Chairman of a local running phenomenon in Durban called Regents.

The RuNyanga Ultra Trail Run is the First 100-mile Ultra Trail Run in Zimbabwe. This race traverses some of the most beautiful landscapes in Zimbabwe on Mount Nyangani, in the Eastern Highlands. Mount Nyangani is the highest mountain in Zimbabwe at 2,592 metres. The mountain is located within Nyanga National Park, in Nyanga District, about 110km northwest of Mutare. The mountain vegetation is largely composed of heath around the summit plateau with evergreen forest along the wetter eastern slopes and grassland to the western side. (ref- Wikipedia)

Last Samurai Standing - Tokyo Backyard Ultra Report27 Nov 202300:23:56

Send us a text

This episode is a "race report" from my perspective as a volunteer at the Tokyo Last Samurai Standing Backyard Ultra. The Runners ran for 70 hours - however,  no one "won" the race, and the last two participants DNF'd on the 70th loop.

Wandisile started seriously running in 2015, he also runs to help manage his mental health. He started with the 5km distance, and the Nike running challenges nudged his competitive edge and he increased. Since then he has got all his Abbott World Marathon Majors.
Wandisile also facilitates international races for local South African runners through his business Just Run Tours. He does this mostly for African runners who otherwise would have never had the opportunity or idea to run marathons all over the globe as part of enjoying their running journey. His goal is to see more Africans get a chance to run abroad and experience the joys of running international races.

Luca, is an avid mountaineer as well as a trail runner - it can be argued that the two are intertwined. Luca was born in Rome, in Italy and he discoved his love for the outdoors and mountains through Boy Scouts, he was a member of a troop from the age of 8 to 24.
Luca has explored the Apennines and the Dolomites in his home country of Italy. Combining work with adventure, once in Japan and based in Tokyo, he explored the Japanese mountains and after reading the book by Kyuya Fukada, a Japanese mountaineer, called 'Hyakumeizan', he set out to challenge Japan's hundred famous mountains. In two years he managed to complete the dream of climbing them all.
