By taking the time to stop and truly listen to the world around you, you may notice sounds, sights, and experiences that you take for granted every day. The sound of the traffic on your way to work, how the trees sway when it’s windy, the way the sun feels against your bare skin. These simple, mundane things take place without you even thinking about them. But if you take a moment to see how they affect you and how your life might be different if instead your commute was a breeze, trees stayed still, and it was constantly rainy, then you can find the beauty in these basic, everyday moments. You can find inspiration in them.
Your belief system makes up a huge part of who you are. You’ve probably engaged in discussions or even debates about topics that you felt strongly about. You go about your everyday life while holding on to your morals and beliefs. These guide you in all of your actions and have shaped you into the person that you are today. You can take some time to reflect on why you believe what you do. Let this deeper understanding of yourself inspire you.
You probably have a favorite movie, or favorite book, or favorite song. Maybe you have multiple favorites. There may have been a moment or even a few in your life that you felt like some form of art changed you. You might have gained a new perspective on some aspect of life. When you switch off the TV after watching a rousing movie, or close a book after reading the last line, or hear the last few notes of a beautiful melody, you can let the message inspire you.
There are so many thoughts that go through your mind every day. Many relate to what you’re experiencing while some are probably completely random. Nevertheless, writing down what you’re thinking or feeling and why is one daily activity that can provide you with endless inspiration. It might be some recipes you want to try out, or a to-do list, or a detailed account of a memorable part of your day. Then, you can go back to those journal entries from ordinary days and be inspired by your past self.
If you’re struggling to know where to start, you can easily reflect on some different prompts that will get inspiration flowing. Ask yourself simple questions, such as: What makes you happy? Angry? What was one of your hardest days like? One of your best days? What are you struggling to overcome? What do you wish you could change? What do you hope never changes? Look within yourself for deeper answers to these basic questions. Really think about them, and let the answers inspire you.

We say: instead, always arrive at LEAST an hour before your flight. 98% of the time this has been plenty of time to stand in long lines and check bags and go through long security lines without missing our flight and pocket that money. Save it for your next adventure, or use it for your next flight, hotel room, or your weekly groceries. You'll always be waiting when you travel. If not at the check in counter or security lines, then at the gate. You have to wait in line for tickets to your favorite shows or to get into the show or for the show to start. With proper planning, you can minimize wait times at the airport, and for everything you want to do. Figure out the slow days and times at the airport and book flights accordingly. And when you just can't tolerate that extra 5 minutes waiting in line, use that time wisely and plan your next trip.

Arizona Volunteer Vacations 1. Wilderness Volunteers: https://www.wildernessvolunteers.org/ * Spring campground clean-up * Maintenance at Grand Canyon National Park * Trail maintenance in the Sonoran Desert’s mountainous Superstition Wilderness
Trips typically run from March through October. All food including snacks is provided. They offeer a variety of service projects; all trips cost $375. Trips are usually 7 days long with the majority starting on a Sunday and ending the following Saturday. Work at least 4 of the days during the week depending on the logistics, and take at least one day off to rest and recreate. They seek out projects that are worthwhile and that would likely go undone without volunteer effort.

Jet Lag Facts: The chemical-based circadian clock in our bodies that tells us when to eat and sleep often goes haywire for the first week after a lengthy flight east or west. Unfortunately, jet lag can make getting adjusted to an unfamiliar place that much more difficult Jet lag is a physical reaction to a rapid change in time zones. It affects most travelers, including seasoned flyers like flight attendants and pilots. Common symptoms include disorientation, irritability, insomnia, fatigue, dry eyes, headaches, irregular bowels, and general malaise. Crossing three or more time zones can wreak havoc on biological patterns and circadian rhythms. Melatonin, a hormone secreted by the pineal gland during darkness, causes us to feel drowsy when there is an absence of light. Until melatonin levels are regulated and become adjusted to your new time zone, the chemical clock that suggests when to sleep will not be in sync with your new location.
Traveling west causes some jet lag, however, traveling east creates the most disturbance to circadian rhythms. This is because traveling east demands that our internal clock be advanced, which is more difficult to accomplish than delaying it. Insomnia Daytime drowsiness Waking up too early Lack of appetite as your body confuses its mealtime Lack of focus Difficulty concentrating and mild depression as a result of the lack of sleep from jet lag irritability · Anxiety and mood swings due to time zone changes · Muscle soreness from the long plane ride · Headaches will be consistent as a result of the aircraft’s pressure and loud noises A general rule of thumb to keep in mind before any long trip is the 1:1 ratio: Allow yourself one day to recover for every hour of time difference that you experience. Some people find that they recover from jet lag more easily when traveling west instead of east (or vice versa). A U.S. Centers for Disease Prevention and Control (CDC) study suggests that recovering from jet lag naturally after traveling west requires a number of days equal to half the time zones crossed. That means flying west from JFK (Eastern Time Zone) to Bangkok will take the average traveler around six days in Thailand to completely beat jet lag.
Before You Go Treat your body well before you fly. Although it may be tempting to stay up all night before your flight in order to more easily fall asleep onboard, you should do the opposite. Jet lag can hit you harder if you’re tired, sick, or hungover. Be sure to get a good night’s sleep before you board your flight. Exercise, sleep well, stay hydrated, and stay sober. The worst thing you can do is get on a long flight with a hangover.
Some travelers like to exercise right before they go to the airport. (This can actually help you sleep better on the plane.) Once you’re at the airport, avoid the escalators and moving sidewalks. Instead, walk and take the stairs on the way to your check-in area and gate connections. Adjust your habits before you leave. For example, if you’re traveling from the East to the West Coast of the U.S., you’re facing a three-hour time change and you should try to adjust your internal clock. Before the next earthquake, get together with your family or housemates to plan now what you will do before, during and after. Once the earthquake is over, we will have to live with the risk of fire, the potential lack of utilities and basic services, and the certainty of aftershocks. By planning now, you will be ready. This plan will also be useful for other emergencies. The FEMA website https://www.ready.gov/ Provides additional checklists from everything to cybersecurity, to chemical emergencies to bioterrorism In most every potential disaster they list, they instruct us to: * Build an Emergency Supply Kit. ( including digital versions of all your important documents ) * Make a Family Emergency Plan. So make sure each family member has an emergency supply go bag that is easy to get to and easy to grab at home, car and work- and that all members know the plan, you will be equipped for most anything that comes your way. Inspect your home for possible hazards, including the following: * Are walls securely bolted to the foundation? * Are wall studs attached to the roof rafters with metal hurricane clips, not nails? * Fix any potential weaknesses in your building * Do you know where and how to shut off utilities at the main switches or valves? * Arrange furniture so that chairs and beds are away from windows, mirrors, and picture frames. * Place heavy or large items on lower shelves. *Secure your large appliances, especially your water heater, with flexible cable, braided wire, or metal strapping. Identify top-heavy, free-standing furniture, such as bookcases and china cabinets, that could topple over. * Secure your furniture by using one of two methods. 1. “L” brackets, corner brackets, or aluminum molding, to attach tall or top-heavy furniture to the wall. 2. Eyebolts, to secure items located a short distance from the wall. * Install sliding bolts or childproof latches on all cabinet doors. * Are poisons, solvents, or toxic materials stored safely? * Store all hazardous materials such as poisons and solvents– * in a sturdy, latched or locked cabinet * in a well-ventilated area * away from emergency food or water supplies Additional tips on Preparing your House * Practice “drop, cover, and hold on.” * Keep shoes and a working flashlight next to each bed. * Identify safe spots in every room, such as under sturdy desks and tables. * Learn how to protect yourself no matter where you are when an earthquake strikes. * Get a fire extinguisher for your home. Your local fire department can train you and your family to use it properly. * Teach everyone in your household to use emergency whistles and/or to knock three times repeatedly if trapped. Rescuers are trained to listen for such sounds. (We have whistles in our emergency go bags) * Identify the needs of household members and neighbors with special requirements or situations, such as use of a wheelchair, walking aids, special diets, or medication. * Take a Red Cross first aid and cardiopulmonary
Know the difference between a watch (conditions are favorable for a tornado to form) and a warning (a tornado has been spotted in your area and you should take shelter immediately) * Prepare NOW * Create an emergency plan so that you and your family know what you will do, where you will go, and what you will need to take with you to safely weather the storm. — all the things we’ve discussed in previous episodes, beginning with Episode 91 apply.- ANd just a reminder to teach/make sure your family how to administer basic first aid, how to use a fire extinguisher, and how and when to turn off water, gas, and electricity in your home.You need your emergency plan, your go bag, etc. What we’ll share here is additional to and specific to tornadoes and hurricanes:
* Once you have identified your safe location, prepare for long-term social distancing by gathering emergency supplies, cleaning supplies, non-perishable foods, and water. You already know what to pack in your “go-Bag” from episode 94 and from our last few episodes. It’s possible you’ll need enough supplies for several weeks. Now is a great time to start slowly building up your supplies in advance to allow longer time periods between shopping trips, because even if you don’t have to evacuate, being prepared allows you to avoid unnecessary excursions (and reserves supplies for those in greater need). It also allows you to address minor medical issues at home, alleviating the burden on urgent care centers and hospitals. * Texts are more effective in possibly getting through than calls, so try texting first.
Get your home ready. * Clear your yard. Make sure there’s nothing that could blow around during the storm and damage your home. Move bikes, lawn and patio furniture, grills, propane tanks, and building material * Board and/or Cover up windows and doors. Use storm shutters or nail pieces of plywood to the outside window frames to protect your windows. This can help keep you safe from pieces of shattered glass. We’ll cover more ways to secure your household goods in our next episode. * Be ready to turn off your power. If you see flooding, downed power lines, or you have to leave your home, switch your power off. * Fill clean water containers with drinking water. You’ll want to do this in case you lose your water supply during the storm. You can also fill up your sinks and bathtubs with water for washing. * Check your carbon monoxide (CO) detector’s battery to prevent CO poisoning Be ready to evacuate or stay at home. Always listen to authorities regarding whether you should evacuate or stay at home. If a hurricane is coming, you may hear an order from authorities to evacuate (leave your home). Never ignore an order to evacuate. Even sturdy, well-built houses may not hold up against a hurricane. Staying home to protect your property is not worth risking your heal

Several months ago, Rory’s family had to evacuate for Hurricane Laura, we had huge fires in California and Oregon which caused lots of evacuations, and those events were what really inspired us to start this little mini-series on what to pack for EMERGENCY on -the-go. So whether its a because of a chemical leak from a nearby industrial accident, bad weather or any other circumstance where you and your family feel threatened or endangered, you might need to leave your home, school, or workplace to avoid danger. In some cases, you may have a day or two to prepare while other situations might call for an immediate evacuation. Planning is vital to making sure that you can evacuate quickly and safely no matter what the circumstances. And we all like to think, “well, this won’t happen to me.” And hopefully it won’t. But be advised, that the prep you do now for an emergency (besides potentially saving a life and/or making a horrific situation less horrific), will only help you in your travels. There are so many similarities because in both cases, planned travel verses evacuation, you’re still packing and you’re leaving your home. So the work you do now -especially during quarantine when you have extra time at home, it’s the perfect time to take care of yourself and your family. BUILD A BASIC EMERGENCY SUPPLY KIT: After an emergency, you may need to survive on your own for several days. A disaster supplies kit is a collection of basic items your household may need in the event of an emergency. Being prepared means having your own food, water and other supplies to last for several days. Make sure your emergency kit is stocked with the items suggested below. Once you take a look at the basic items consider what unique needs your family might have, such as supplies for pets or seniors.
To assemble your kit store items in airtight plastic bags and put your entire disaster supplies kit in one or two easy-to-carry containers such as plastic bins, backpack, or duffel bag. A basic emergency supply kit could include the following recommended items: * Water (one gallon per person per day for at least three days, for drinking and sanitation) * Food (at least a three-day supply of non-perishable food)(can opener or scissors and utensils, depending on type of food). Ideally the food is high in water and calories. * Battery-powered or hand crank radio or television and a NOAA Weather Radio with tone alert - Extra batteries for that * Flashlight with Extra batteries for that and light sticks * First aid kit and manual * Whistle (to signal for help) * Plastic sheeting and duct tape (to shelter in place) * Moist towelettes, Hand Sanitizer garbage bags and plastic ties (for personal sanitation) * Wrench or pliers (to turn off utilities) * Manual can opener (for food) * Physical “real” Local maps and a list of emergency out-of-area contact phone numbers * Cell phone with chargers and a backup battery - ideally solar * Dust mask (to help filter contaminated air) * AND SPEAKING OF MASKS!….. Since Spring of 2020, the CDC has recommended people include Additional Emergency Supplies in their kits to help prevent the spread of coronavirus or other viruses and the flu. Consider adding the following items to your emergency supply kit based on your individual needs: * Masks /Cloth FACE COVERINGS (for everyone ages 2 and above), soap, hand sanitizer, disinfecting wipes to disinfect surfaces * Disposable gloves * Prescription medications * Non-prescription medications such as pain relievers, anti-diarrhea medication, antacids or laxatives and vitamins ANY ITEMS THAT MEET YOUR UNIQUE FAMILY NEEDS, SUCH AS: * Extra Prescription eyeglasses and contact lens solution, Hearing aid batteries * Infant formula, bottles, diapers, wipes, pacifiers, and diaper rash cream * Pet food and extra water for your pet ALSO PACK * Cash, coins, traveler's checks * Important family documents such as copies of insurance policies, identification and bank account records, copies of credit cards and ID cards, pictures of your pets and family, phone numbers and maps: saved electronically and/or ideally in a waterproof, portable container * Sleeping bag or warm blanket for each person- consider additional bedding if you live in a cold-weather climate * Complete change of clothing appropriate for your climate - include long sleeve shirt and long pants and sturdy shoes (consider additional clothing if you live in a cold-weather climate, a coat, hat, mittens, scarf, hand warmers- thermal underwear - Rain Gear ***
Bring some comforts of home (usual toys, food, bedding)
Use a carrier
Read up on policies before hand (some pets can only be transported in the cargo hold while others allow you to bring a pet as your carry-on item)
If transported in a cargo hold ask to watch you pet being loaded and unloaded
Notify at least one flight attendant (if the captain knows they take special precautions)
Don’t ever ship brachycephalic animals such as pekingese dogs, bulldogs, or persian cats in the cargo holds as they are vulnerable to oxygen deprivation and heat stroke
Make sure the pet is wearing their ID tags
Keep their medical records with you and bring a first aid kit in case of an emergency
medications, if needed
Formal health certificate from your vet (many airlines require one)
Clip their claws prior to the trip
Waste bags
Leash/Harness/Collar (make sure it can’t get caught on the doors)
Food and treats with collapsible bowls (for water too)
Do not feed for four to six hours before the trip
Towel
Travel blanket
Grooming supplies (click the nails before hand to prevent getting hooked in things)
Use direct flights (avoid mistakes during transfers and possible delays in getting your pet off of the plane)
Carry a current photograph (in case your pet gets lost)
