| Dr Waleed Al Ghamdi // SILMO Riyadh and the Future of Optometry in Saudi Arabia | 14 Sep 2026 | 00:31:04
In April 2027, SILMO arrives in Riyadh for the first time, bringing together the international optical industry, the Saudi optometry community and the World Congress of Optometry. Dr Waleed Al Ghamdi, President of the Saudi Society of Optometry, joins Nick Coffer to explore the much bigger story behind the event: the rapid development of optometry in Saudi Arabia and the ambition for the profession to play a greater role in primary eye care. Waleed reflects on his own journey from studying optometry in Saudi Arabia to six years in Sydney, and explains how his experience in Australia helped shape his thinking about what optometry could become back home. The conversation explores access to eye care, avoidable sight loss, diabetes and diabetic retinopathy, childhood vision, dry eye and the particular challenges of the Saudi environment. Waleed also discusses the work of Sight for All Saudi Arabia and why education and training remain central to expanding the profession. Finally, Nick and Waleed look ahead to SILMO Riyadh and the opportunity created by bringing clinical practice, research, education, fashion, technology and the optical industry together under one roof — not simply to bring international expertise into Saudi Arabia, but to show what Saudi optometry can contribute to the wider world. | André Leal // From Family Legacy to a New Vision for Optical Retail | 10 Aug 2026 | 00:43:45
In this episode of The Right Optics by SILMO, Nick Coffer meets André Leal, the second generation behind André Opticas, one of Portugal’s best-known independent optical businesses. André’s parents were just 19 and 20 when they took the extraordinary gamble of buying their first store in 1981 - only four months after André himself was born. What followed was 15 years without a holiday and a determination to seek out eyewear and ideas from across Europe that simply weren’t available in Portugal. André literally grew up in the business, eventually working his way through every department before taking on its leadership. Today, André Opticas has six stores and around 70 people, combining optometry with independent eyewear, restoration, bespoke frame-making and remarkable retail design. Nick and André talk about family, craftsmanship, the award-winning Chiado store, why eyewear can be a “functional sculpture”, and why André believes the future of independent optics lies not in competing with AI and automation, but in doubling down on expertise, experience and human connection. A warm and inspiring chat about family, ambition, beautiful eyewear, extraordinary spaces and the enduring power of human connection in optics. | Rebecca Thompson // Why Great Frames Don't Sell Themselves | 17 Jul 2026 | 00:32:09
Nick Coffer sits down with eyewear stylist, dispensing optician, consultant and writer Rebecca Thompson to explore one of the biggest missed opportunities in the optical industry: what happens after a frame reaches the practice. The industry invests huge amounts of time and money into sell-in - convincing practices to stock a brand. But Rebecca argues that the real opportunity lies in sell-through: helping practices tell compelling stories, build confidence and create meaningful connections between eyewear and the people who wear it. Together, they discuss:
Drawing on experience across almost every part of the optical industry, Rebecca offers practical insights for brands, independent practices and anyone interested in how great products become great customer experiences.
| Hayley Brunsden // Vision, Courage and the Art of Starting From Scratch | 29 May 2026 | 00:30:23
This week we leave the studio for the Georgian high street of Beaconsfield in Buckinghamshire, where Hayley Brunsden has built something quietly extraordinary. CBTR Opticians opened three years ago, won two national awards in its first two years, and has become the kind of boutique practice that clients travel for. Hayley's story involves a motorway diversion, a Watford FC football match, and a to-let sign spotted at exactly the right moment. It involves pitching one of the world's most prestigious lens manufacturers before she had a single wall painted, talking her way onto the books of fiercely protective eyewear brands at SILMO with little more than a clear vision, and when a Swiss brand said no to supplying their glasses to the UK, going straight to the MD and asking again. But this conversation is really about something harder to define: what it takes to build a practice that feels genuinely personal. From the pre-appointment survey that asks whether you're sweet or savoury, to handpicking a small number of independent brands whose stories she can tell with real conviction, Hayley has thought carefully about every detail of the experience she's created. Warm, funny, and admirably relentless, this is one of those episodes that will leave you wondering why more people don't just go ahead and create their own business. https://www.cbtropticians.com/ https://www.instagram.com/cbtropticians/ Hosted on Acast.
Hosted on Acast.
Hosted on Acast. | [FR] Frame the Future : Réinventer l'Optique pour Durer | 06 Feb 2026 | 00:37:33
Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

They dive into the challenges of modern independent practice, the need to champion true craftsmanship, and Jason’s belief that consumers deserve to understand what makes a £500 frame different from a £100 one. They also talk exclusivity, branding, trunk shows across the globe, and why every optician should be a destination. And then there’s K-Lite - the game-changing material that allows Kirk & Kirk frames to be both bold and feather-light. As always, Jason is candid, thoughtful, and full of real-world insight - especially on Brexit, global shifts, resilience, and the drive to keep moving forward, even when things get tough. | Daniel Feldman // Framing The Future | 28 May 2025 | 00:34:28
In this episode, Nick reconnects with a long-time friend of Silmo and an industry heavyweight — Daniel Feldman, Editor-in-Chief of The Optical Journal and founder of DBA Designs. Speaking from Colorado, Daniel shares his take on how the optical landscape has changed in recent years, and where he sees it going next. They talk through the shifting shape of the US market, from the increasing role of private equity to the quiet retreat of some of the big trade shows. Daniel explains how fragmentation is creating challenges for some, but also fresh opportunities for independents — especially those who can build strong identities and meaningful relationships with their customers. The conversation also touches on product trends — what’s happening with frame styles, why thinner silhouettes are making a return, and how smart glasses might soon do more than just feel futuristic. Whether it’s translation features or on-screen prompts, there’s growing interest in eyewear that quietly does more. It’s a relaxed, thoughtful conversation with someone who’s spent decades observing the industry. And, as always, there’s time for a few reflections on what makes Silmo different — not just as a trade show, but as a place where people genuinely connect. Hosted on Acast.
