Roger Vieira on Factory Racing, Winning Cerro Abajo & Chasing a World Cup Podium
09 sept. 2026
01:30:32
Roger Vieira is back on The Ride Companion during the best season of his life...
In this episode, Roger explains how Bernard Kerr's injury ultimately opened the door for him at Pivot, what life inside a factory downhill team is really like and whether factory support has actually made him faster or, simply given him the opportunity to show the speed he already had.
Roger breaks down his first proper factory supported off-season, testing with FOX in California, riding in Queenstown, changing his approach to training and working with Bernard Kerr to improve some surprisingly specific weaknesses in his riding. We also get deep into the mental side of World Cup downhill racing. Roger explains the 'red zone vs blue zone' approach he's using with his mental coach, why World Cup qualifying creates so much pressure and what goes through his head in the seconds before leaving the start gate. Roger also explains why urban downhill brings out a completely different mentality in him, why he loves the Red Bull Cero Abajo series so much and the intricasies of downhill street racing.
Once again, Roger delivers with great insights. We hope you enjoy the episode.
Rachel Atherton is one of the greatest downhill mountain bike racers of all time.
With 40 UCI Downhill World Cup victories, six overall titles, five elite World Championships and the only perfect World Cup season in history, Rachel achieved almost everything the sport could offer. In this deeply honest conversation with Davi and Olly, Rachel opens up about what happened when winning stopped defining her.
Recorded at Dyfi Bike Park in Wales, Rachel discusses motherhood, suffering a serious postpartum haemorrhage during the birth of her second daughter and the difficult recovery that followed. She explains why she felt torn between motherhood and racing after having her first child, her experience of postpartum depression and why winning her 40th World Cup at Lenzerheide left her feeling unexpectedly empty. Rachel also reveals why she eventually stepped away from racing, how injury changed her priorities and why discovering a new purpose has sometimes felt harder than winning a World Cup.
The conversation explores the loneliness and pressure of dominating downhill, how her relationship helped separate her identity from her results and the hidden workload that comes with being the fastest rider in the world.
This is Rachel Atherton beyond the race results. We hope you enjoy the episode.

Ten years ago, I recorded the first version of this podcast from my bedroom with no microphone, no experience and absolutely no idea what I was doing.
More than 460 episodes later, I wanted to sit down and reflect on some of the milestones that reflected where this all started. On my own, in a room, still with no idea what I'm doing.
This is a solo reflection on the terrible early recordings, the guests and messages that changed everything, meeting Olly Wilkins, creating Lockdown Companion, building our first studios, the arrival of Doug and Naomi, the Rob Warner episode, Hardline, Marin Bikes, Warner's Race Companion and where TRC Media House could go next. I also answer listener questions about nearly giving up, my favourite guests, the sacrifices behind making the show sustainable and what ten years of podcasting has taught me.
Most importantly though, this is a THANK YOU to everyone who has watched, listened, subscribed, supported the show or trusted us to tell their story. It began without a plan and, honestly, it still doesn't have much of one!
Thank you for an incredible ten years. Peace and love.

01 avr. 2026
02:14:50
Danny Hart joins The Ride Companion for a BANGER episode! In this episode, Danny takes us deep inside the world of World Cup downhill racing. He talks openly about pressure, qualifying formats and how the sport has evolved since his legendary 2011 Champery World Champs run which cemented his name in mountain biking history. Danny shares what it was like winning world championships at such a young age, the highs and lows of a long racing career and how he's managed to stay competitive in one of the toughest sports in the world. From travelling the globe with his family in a camper van to battling the new generation of riders like Jackson Goldstone, Amaury Pierron and Loïc Bruni, this episode gives a rare look into the mindset of a rider who has spent his life chasing speed. We also dive into race preparation, training, bike setup, the mental side of racing, and what really happens behind the scenes at the Downhill World Cup. Dom Ferris of Trash Free Trails on Trail Litter and How We Fix It
18 mars 2026
02:10:41
Dom Ferris, founder of Trash Free Trails joins The Ride Companion to talk about one of the biggest issues affecting every rider, runner and outdoor space user: single-use pollution on our trails.
Dom explains how Trash Free Trails started, why trail litter is about far more than 'bad behaviour' and how mountain bikers can take real ownership of the places they ride. The conversation goes deep into MTB trail stewardship, nature connection, mental health, community action and the systems that keep single-use pollution showing up in the outdoors.
We also dive into the data behind trail litter, the reality of what's being found on UK trails, why drinks cans, bottles, gels and food packaging are such a major problem along with how new legislation like a deposit return scheme could help change things. There's loads in here too on trail culture, bike park responsibility, how to make cleanups more positive, and why Dom believes outrage alone won't solve anything. If you care about mountain biking, trail building, riding spots, the outdoor community, litter picking, environmental action, access to nature and keeping trails clean, this is an episode you need to hear and share with your community. We hope you enjoy the episode!
