Myers attended Elmhurst College from 1995 – 1999 where he was a music major and the drummer in the Elmhurst College Jazz Band. | 101 - Casey “Bassy” Abrams :: Master of the Bottom End | 03 Feb 2021 | 01:00:01 | |
Vocalist and multi-instrumentalist Casey Abrams became an overnight celebrity in January 2011, when he was selected to be a contestant on the popular televised talent competition American Idol.
******LISTEN TO THIS EPISODE AND SUBSCRIBE!!! www.richredmond.com/listen
Abrams was born on February 12, 1991, in Austin, Texas. Abrams' family lived in Illinois for several years before settling in Idyllwild, California, where his father taught filmmaking at the Idyllwild Arts Academy. Abrams became a student at Idyllwild, where he studied both jazz and classical music, with emphasis on the double bass and piano. In addition to jazz, Abrams developed a fondness for classic jazz and pop vocalists such as Frank Sinatra, Ray Charles, and James Taylor, and began studying singing as well as instrumental performance. When the producers of American Idol began holding auditions for their tenth season, Abrams appeared at the tryouts in Austin, and his version of Ray Charles' "I Don't Need No Doctor" impressed the judges, who made him one of the 24 semi-finalists who took part in the televised competition in Los Angeles. Abrams' warm, engaging style and likable personality made him a favorite with American Idol's viewers as well as the judges, as did his eclectic choices of material, ranging from Ella Fitzgerald to Nirvana. When Abrams fared poorly in the voting after reaching the Top 11, the show's judges made the rare choice to "save" him, intervening to keep him in the running after an impressive performance of Elton John's "Your Song." However, four weeks later, Abrams was finally voted off the show, coming in sixth place while Scotty McCreery came in first. After making a number of television appearances and taking part in the annual American Idol concert tour, Abrams made his recording debut in the fall of 2011, when he and Haley Reinhart (another season ten contestant) recorded a duet version of the seasonal favorite "Baby, It's Cold Outside" that was issued as a single. In January 2012, Concord Music Group announced they'd signed Abrams to a record deal, and his self-titled debut album was released in June 2012.
Beginning in 2014, Abrams became involved with Scott Bradlee's jazz-themed covers ensemble Postmodern Jukebox, joining the group on several tours and recording fan favorite covers with them like a New Orleans' take on Sam Smith's "I'm Not the Only One" and a version of Haddaway's "What Is Love" done in the style of the Isley Brothers. His ebullient vocal delivery and double bass chops made him a strong fit for the band, even as he continued to record his own music, including the 2016 EP Tales from the Gingerbread House. 2018 saw the release of Abrams' third full-length, I Put a Spell on You, while he dipped back into his roots the following year with the aptly titled effort Jazz.

| 100 - Kenny Aronoff :: Passion and Persistence Personified | 27 Jan 2021 | 01:03:38 | |
Although probably best known as a member of John Mellencamp's backing band, drummer Kenny Aronoff is one of rock's most in-demand session players, having played with some of the genre's biggest names.
******LISTEN TO THIS EPISODE AND SUBSCRIBE!!! www.richredmond.com/listen
Raised in Massachusetts, Aronoff was self-taught early on, as he played in his first band at the age of ten (and subsequently played in various local rock outfits throughout his teenage years). But by the age of 16, Aronoff began to seriously study classical music, as he picked up a thing or two from members of the Boston Symphony Orchestra, before studying at the University of Massachusetts and at Indiana University (where he was awarded a 'Performer's Certificate'). Even during summers off from his schooling, Aronoff continued to hone his chops by playing at both the Aspen and Tanglewood Music Festivals. Upon graduating from Indiana University in 1976, Aronoff was offered spots playing timpani with several different orchestras throughout the world, but turned down the offers to relocate back north - studying and playing (mostly fusion-jazz) in both Boston and New York. After a year, Aronoff opted to relocate back to Indiana, where he paid his dues over the next few years playing regularly with bands on the Midwest club circuit.
By 1980, Aronoff had landed the break in his music career that he had long sought - nabbing a spot in John Mellencamp's group. Although Mellencamp had released several albums during the late '70s, it was shortly after Aronoff's arrival into the band that Mellencamp's career took off, as he focused more on a roots-rock direction/sound. Aronoff remained with Mellencamp for over 15 years, supplying the back beat on such hit albums as 1980's Nothin' Matters, 1982's American Fool, 1983's Uh-Huh, 1985's Scarecrow, 1987's Lonesome Jubilee, 1989's Big Daddy, 1991's Whenever We Wanted, 1993's Human Wheels, 1994's Dance Naked, and 1996's Mr. Happy Go Lucky.
Beginning in the mid '80s, Aronoff served as a session drummer for countless renowned artists, as he played on albums by Bob Dylan, Jon Bon Jovi, Bob Seger, Belinda Carlisle, Indigo Girls, Meat Loaf, Lisa Germano, Melissa Etheridge, Rolling Stones, Joe Cocker, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Alice Cooper, Travis Tritt, and Willie Nelson, among countless others. Besides backing other artists on record, Aronoff has also performed and/or toured alongside others besides Mellencamp, including Willie Nelson, Melissa Etheridge, Bob Seger, John Fogerty, Richie Sambora, Smashing Pumpkins, Joe Cocker and many others. Additionally, Aronoff has taught as an associate professor at Indiana University, performed at drum clinics, and produced several instructional videos, including Power Workout One, Power Workout Two, and Laying it Down: the Basics of Rock Drumming. Aronoff has also been named the top 'Pop/Rock Drummer' four five years and 'Studio Drummer' for four years by the readers of Modern Drummer Magazine, proving that his talents haven't gone unnoticed by music fans worldwide.

| 094 - Walfredo Reyes Jr :: A Family Band Coming Out of Cuba | 30 Dec 2020 | 01:16:01 | |
Few drummers playing today can successfully combine the rich history of Latin, Afro-Cuban and World Percussion with the drum set. For Walfredo Reyes, Jr., fusing the two disciplines has been his driving passion. In fact, by blazing this path, Reyes has challenged the technical levels of our instrument. Born in Cuba, raised in Puerto Rico, and culminating his musical style in the U.S., Wally (Walfredo Jr.) learned the traditions from the master, his father Walfredo Sr. He married those principles with his love of the drum set, coming up with his own truly global rhythmic style. Simply put, Wally is able to sound like a drummer and a percussionist at the same time. Add blistering chops and a penchant for playing unusual patterns to the mix, and you have only a small idea of what this man can do.

If you’ve ever wondered why people stand in long lines to meet Gregg, the answer is simple—it’s Gregg himself, and his love for and acceptance of everyone. His warm, easy-going manner is refreshing from a drummer that does the awesome gigs he does. More than that, it’s the way he teaches and the advice he gives. When he speaks, you can’t help but listen—it’s like he reads the questions on your mind and directs his answers right at you. You’ll always take away something that you hadn’t learned before—no matter how many other clinics by top names you’ve attended. Gregg Bissonette’s drumming expertise is legendary and he’s the professional that other professionals go to for advice. Gregg has never forgotten the journey to where he is and how he got there. It’s for this reason that he’ll spend hours answering questions from inquisitive drummers at a clinic or a NAMM show. His appreciation for their loyalty, encouragement, and support is apparent, and his camaraderie and warm sense of humor comes across clearly whether he’s hanging with you after a performance, or recording or teaching at a drum clinic. His down-to-earth balance between professionalism, strong work ethic, and congeniality make him a wonderful teacher, colleague, session artist, and a much-respected name in the music industry.

DAVE POMEROY Dave Pomeroy was born in Naples, Italy to an Air Force family in 1956. He fell in love with music shortly after birth and started playing the bass at the age of 10. He moved to Nashville in 1977, and after early gigs with Sleepy LaBeef, Billy Joe Shaver and Guy Clark, joined Don Williams' band. Dave toured and recorded with Williams for 14 years, which eventually led to a freelance career as a studio bassist and independent producer. He has played bass on more than 500 albums with artists like Elton John, Alan Jackson, Keith Whitley, Trisha Yearwood, Earl Scruggs, Emmylou Harris and The Chieftains. Dave has performed live in concert and on television with many major artists such as Steve Winwood, John Fogerty, Willie Nelson, Chet Atkins, Duane Eddy, Earl Klugh, and Dr. John. In 1997 Dave was voted ‘Bassist of the Year’ at the Nashville Music Awards. As a solo artist, bandleader, and producer, Dave has released 14 projects on his own label, Earwave. In 1999, he created and hosted the radio series “Nashville Unlimited," for Nashville Public Radio which featured "live in the studio” performances and interviews with a wide variety of Nashville's finest singers, songwriters, and musicians. He has continued that tradition with his annual “Nashville Unlimited Christmas” concert, CDs and radio broadcasts, all of which benefit Nashville’s “Room In the Inn” homeless program, for whom Dave has raised over $100,000 since 1992. A featured columnist for Bass Player Magazine since 1995, Dave has also contributed as a writer to various books about bass playing and the music business. He has had his songs recorded by Chet Atkins, Don Williams, and The Sweethearts of the Rodeo, whose new album he also produced. He remains active as a session player and still plays live gigs around Nashville and tours occasionally with Three Ring Circle, his “jazzgrass” instrumental trio with Rob Ickes (dobro) and Andy Leftwich (mandolin/fiddle). Dave was elected to a three-year term as President of the Nashville Musicians Association, AFM Local 257 in December 2008. He is also a board member of Leadership Music, The Academy of Country Music, Bass Player Magazine and The International Recording Musicians Association. In Dave's own words... "Nashville has the most fantastic creative community in the world and has enabled all my musical dreams to come true. I am committed to doing everything possible to help "Music City" promote its diverse musical heritage and reach its full potential as a worldwide music and media center."

In 2014, Cale released his first EP titled “Wild and Wreckless”—a five-song project recorded at Ocean Way Studio with Kyle Jacobs and Matt McClure. In 2015, Dodds received a cut from A Thousand Horses for his song “Drunk Dial,” which reached number 23 on Billboards’s Country Airplay Chart; and in 2016, Warner/Chappell Music signed Dodds to a worldwide publishing agreement. In March 2016, Dodds independently released his second project, "People Watching - EP", produced by Corey Crowder and Zach Abend. Since the release, his songs "People Watching" and "Lying" have been streamed over 5 million times, and “Acting Our Age,” was selected for the EA Sports Madden ‘17 soundtrack which also featured artists such as Blake Shelton and Brantley Gilbert. In January 2017, Cale Dodds joined Warner Music Nashville. Later that year, in September, Dodds released his first major label "double"—a two-sided single—featuring "All Over" and "Lying." The second double followed in November with "Out Of My System" and "People Watching," and the third in January 2018 with Cale's radio single "Take You Back" and "Like We Do." Most recently, in March 2019, Dodds released his current single "I Like Where This Is Going" a song written with hit writers Nicolle Galyon and Busbee about "anticipation" and seeing "the uncertainty of what’s going to happen, while having faith that it’s going to unfold in the right way."

Working as an advertising executive in his twenties, he performed small bar gigs near his home in Los Angeles starting in 2009 but kept his marketing career until 2015 - when he finally left his job to become a full-time musician. Turns out that was a good decision. At age 33, Sam released his debut album “Angeleno" in 2015. Produced by Ry Cooder and Joachim Cooder, “Angeleno” introduced Sam as a distinctly assured voice in the Country and Americana scene. The album garnered awards and critical acclaim from Rolling Stone, American Songwriter, NPR and countless others.

When virtuosity, intuition and pure soul meet, the results are magical. And that kind of magic — steeped in the sounds, tradition and spirit of Memphis — is (Brother) Paul Brown’s specialty. The GRAMMY® Winning Nashville, Tennessee-based musician, songwriter and producer is a roots world MVP, but his abilities truly extend beyond any genre to encompass his vision.

That’s abundantly clear when Brown’s behind the keyboard. Whether on stage or in the studio, his signature approach and passionate energy are both unmistakable. In addition to the gliding melodies, elongated textures and churning chords, Brown displays a stunning, highly original vocabulary on the instrument — enhancing and reflecting the vocal performances of compelling singers like Rush, Peebles, Deborah Bonham and Mighty Sam McClean with voice-like effects — hums, stutters, exclamations, lines that trail off like sentences. It’s that musical conversation he alludes to, in a very literal sense.

Coming from a musical family where everyone played an instrument, it was noticed as soon as pots, pans, Tupperware and wooden stir spoons were missing and tore up at the l age of 6. Soon taking lessons from a local drum instructor Greg Tooley, Sean learned all the basics. Reading basic notation and rudiments to simple rock grooves and focus on timekeeping was the agenda. After working the local circuit in various rock and pop cover bands, Sean made the leap to Nashville where he would be the small fish in a big pond of great musicians and drummers.
Sean honed in on his craft in downtown Nashville bars and made a name for himself over the course of three years during which he had worked his way into doing many demo recordings for various hit songwriters such as Hilary Lindsey, Dallas Davidson and many more.

| Marty Ray :: Making Music on His Own Terms | 16 Jun 2020 | 01:17:21 | |
Marty Ray was born in Memphis, TN but grew up in a small town in Arkansas by the name of Blytheville. He was always the funniest, and scariest, guy in any room growing up, and still is.

He has been singing and writing songs since he was a young boy and about acting he says, "I guess I've always been an actor, you gotta be able to act to get outta some of the stuff I got into". Marty has been involved in multiple Independent Films all across the south and has rubbed shoulders with some pretty respectable people in the entertainment industry. As a Singer/Songwriter Marty has won several competitions and had several songs placed, along with radio airplay. As an actor he stands out with his versatility in styles from Comedy to Romance, even with that majestic beard. He has been successful in radio as well. Creating and producing his own radio show strictly about Indie Film and Music called MemNash Radio he gained access to the inside, or back door, of the movie business. MemNash Radio reached many fans with Hawk and The Beard at the helm, I think you know who "The Beard" was.
