| Ep 20: Sharing the Mental Load at Home with Dr. Pip Houghton | 23 Apr 2025 | 00:36:10 | |
An American study found was that almost 40% of female physicians switch to part-time hours or leave medicine altogether within six years of completing residency. Some studies attribute this to the overwhelming mental and emotional load that female physicians carry both at work and at home. If we're looking at the workforce, 50% of physicians and 60% of current medical students in Canada right now are female. If we extrapolate 40% of the workforce from within those numbers within six years of completing their training, this is a crisis situation and makes today's conversation not only engaging - but pressing. To guide us, Dr. Pip Houghton, a family doctor and certified Fair Play Facilitator, joins Dr. Alicia Power to discuss the crucial issue of mental load and its impact on families, especially those in the medical field. Dr. Pip shares her journey towards becoming a Fair Play Facilitator and how Eve Rodsky's book "Fair Play" has transformed her family's approach to household tasks. Covering the definitions of mental load, emotional labor, and domestic labor, and the importance of equitable distribution of tasks. Dr. Pip emphasizes the significance of having structured conversations around household responsibilities and invites listeners to learn more through reading Fair Play, watching the Fair Play Documentary, attending the upcoming 2025 Revive Physician's Retreat, visiting Dr. Pip Houghton's website - and of course listening to and sharing this podcast episode!

| Ep 25: Understanding the Burnout Narrative with Dr. Rabia Khan | 16 Jul 2025 | 01:00:39 | |
We’ve been talking a lot about burnout lately - on this podcast and in the broader community - but let’s be honest: sometimes these conversations feel surface-level at best, and futile at worst. Maybe you're screaming inside, thinking, "Sure, it all sounds nice, but the system is too broken, and I'm too stuck to change anything." Today, Dr. Sarah Lea sits down with Dr. Rabia Khan - PhD, MS, and Postdoctoral Fellow - to go deeper. Together, they crack open what’s really being addressed when we talk about burnout. Dr. Khan’s research explores the sociocultural and historical forces driving disillusionment in medicine - and in life. In her work, she also shines a light on the epistemic injustice of excluding diverse bodies and experiences - especially women and other intersectionally marginalized groups - from the research that defines what it means to be "well" in medicine. Buckle up for an eye-opening conversation that contextualizes the different discourses surrounding burnout, unpacks the enculturation of medicine, and explores real pathways toward a lighter, more connected, future. The Energy Management Series will resume in the following weeks!
