Retro Wrestling w/Gene Jackson – Episode #47: The D.I. Bob Carter: From the Dungeon to Dothan24 Mar 202601:35:42

From his early days growing up in Boston during the WWWF era… to surviving brutal tryouts under Gene Anderson and Nelson Royal… to training in the infamous Hart Dungeon… Bob Blackburn’s journey into professional wrestling was anything but ordinary

We dive deep into:

  • The insane 250-man tryout that only four survived
  • Training under Gene Anderson (and what those “tryouts” were really like)
  • Stu Hart, Bruce Hart, and a gimmick pitch so wild it nearly got him struck by lightning
  • Becoming “The D.I.” in Continental Wrestling
  • The Honor Guard, Mark Young, and tag team gold with Randy Colley
  • Working with a young Sid Vicious (and surviving the leg drop)
  • Why Austin Idol once refused to follow his promo
  • REAL heat in Montgomery and a riot level whipping angle
  • Losing a wheel off his car on I-40 on the way to Memphis… and selling his car to a state trooper
  • Living with Mark Calloway (The Undertaker) in Nashville
  • Why Memphis was the hardest hitting territory he ever worked
  • The phone call from Roman Gabriel that ended his wrestling career overnight

This is a raw, honest, hilarious, and occasionally jaw dropping look at what it was like working in the dying days of the territory system, when the miles were long, the money was thin, and the heat was very real.

If you love Continental Wrestling, late 80s Memphis, Eddie Gilbert stories, or behind the scenes tales from the road, this episode is for you.

Live from 304 Studios in Jonesboro, Arkansas, BT welcomes longtime wrestling fan, smart mark extraordinaire, and Retro Wrestling Re-View Continental Podcast co-host Robb Helt for a wide ranging, often hilarious, and surprisingly revealing conversation.

In this episode, Robb traces his journey from a six year old kid accidentally discovering wrestling on WTBS… to following the territory system across the country thanks to his dad’s Walmart career… to sitting in the legendary Dallas Sportatorium… to going to Nashville for a very EYE OPENING Saturday night at the Fairgrounds… and eventually working the workers himself in one of the most unbelievable “mark turned agent” stories you’ll ever hear.

You’ll hear:

🔥 Robb’s first live wrestling experience and why it terrified him
🔥 Growing up on Mid-South, Crockett, Memphis,World Class, and eventually Global….
🔥 Behind-the-scenes stories involving Dave Sullivan (The Equalizer) aka Bill Dannenhauer and working the boys
🔥 Being “smartened up” the hard way
🔥 The Classic Memphis era and the Lawler/Dundee feud from a fan’s perspective
🔥 The Dallas Sportatorium atmosphere and Friday night rituals
🔥 Thoughts on kayfabe sheets, the Wrestling Observer, and learning the business
🔥 Why Robb still watches wrestling through 10-year-old eyes
🔥 How he eventually became part of the Retro Wrestling Re-View team

This is one of those episodes that perfectly captures what In The Studio with BT is all about, real stories, real fandom, real history, and that blurred line between mark and smark that makes wrestling magic.

If you love territory talk, Memphis history, Dallas memories, and honest wrestling conversation, this episode is for you.

Memphis in Minutes Episode #10: The Many Masks of Roger Smith18 Oct 202500:09:48

Roger Smith was a master of disguise in the Memphis wrestling scene—whether he was Assassin No. 2, Dirty Rhodes, The Intern, or The Flame, you could bet he was stirring up heat in every role he played. Retro Wrestling Episode 37: UWF Fury Cast #18- More Muraco/Cactus CHAOS!!22 Sep 202500:30:39

Gene Jackson is back with another dive into the madness of Herb Abrams’ UWF Fury Hour! Episode 18 has everything:

  • Steve “The Wild Thing” Ray waves the flag and takes on Captain Lou’s nephew Carmine Albano (who almost breaks his neck).

  • Paul “Mr. Wonderful” Orndorff squashes “The Beast” and calls out Dr. Death Steve Williams.

  • Don Muraco and Captain Lou cut a surprisingly serious patriotic promo.

  • Sonny Beach battles Bob Orton with John Tolos stirring up trouble… until Cactus Jack and Steve Ray get involved in a full-scale brawl.

  • And in the main event, Don Morocco vs. Cactus Jack turns into a bloody, garbage-can-flying war that—of course—ends in a time limit draw.

It’s wild. It’s chaotic. It’s Herb Abrams’ UWF at its most unpredictable.

Gene watches this madness so YOU don’t have to. But if you want to, you can find these shows at:

Movies in Minutes w/Gene Jackson: Episode #2 - I Like to Hurt People (1985)30 Aug 202500:10:40

Movies in Minutes with Gene Jackson: Episode #2 – I LIKE TO HURT PEOPLE (1985)

On this episode, Gene Jackson reviews one of the most chaotic, violent, and oddly historic wrestling “movies” ever made:

I LIKE TO HURT PEOPLE – a 1985 VHS-era oddity that’s part documentary, part fever dream, and all vintage Detroit madness.

Originally meant to be a horror flick titled Ringside in Hell, this thing got Frankensteined together from mid-70s wrestling footage, bonus footage from 1984, and a storyline about banning The Sheik from wrestling. What we got instead? A cult classic full of blood, promos, and pure territory wrestling gold.

Featuring:
• The Sheik (Ed Farhat) stabbing people with no remorse!
• Dusty Rhodes, Terry Funk, Andre the Giant, Bobo Brazil & more!
• Managers screaming, blood pouring, and 300 lb. Heather Feather demanding to wrestle a man!
• Behind-the-scenes stories about the movie’s wild production
• And yes... Andre trying to say “Are you talking to Andre?” 17 times

It's not really a movie...it's not really a documentary...it's a glorious mess

Let's talk about it!

Retro Wrestling w/ Gene Jackson Episode #45: w/guest “Lord Humongous” Jeff Van Camp10 Mar 202601:41:35

Special Guest Host: Robb Helt

This week on Retro Wrestling with Gene Jackson, we go BIG… literally.

Gene is joined by special guest co-host Robb Helt, and together they sit down with the man behind one of the most intimidating masked gimmicks of the 1980s, “Lord Humongous” Jeff Van Camp.

From a 6’9", 300 pound defensive tackle at the University of Louisville to becoming one of the most feared monsters in Memphis, Southeastern, Continental, Mid-South, and beyond , Jeff’s journey into wrestling is unlike any other you’ve heard before. After a two hour crash training course from the "King" himself, Jerry Lawler.....Jeff suddenly found himself on the road on wild, weird, and wonderful world of professional wrestling.

Highlighted by the quote: "You know you’re over when you get stabbed!”

Inside this episode:

- How Jerry “The King” Lawler personally trained Jeff inside the Mid-South Coliseum and handed him his first booking sheet.
- Early lessons from Buddy Landell (including the story behind Jeff’s first pair of wrestling boots).
- The creation of the Lord Humongous gimmick, from pantyhose under the hockey mask to War Machine by KISS as entrance music.
- Traveling the Southeastern loop with Austin Idol, Bob Armstrong, Jerry Stubbs, and the Armstrong family.

- Getting STABBED by a fan in Jackson, Mississippi during his Mid-South run.
- Working an hour long match with Ric Flair and "winning" the NWA Title in Birmingham.
- Fishing trips with Scott and Steve Armstrong in Gulf Breeze.
- Missed picture money opportunities in Continental Wrestling.
- The decision to leave Continental for Bill Watts’ Mid-South territory.

Jeff shares incredible firsthand stories about Lance Russell, Gordon Solie, Jim Ross, Ron Fuller, Porkchop Cash, Jake Roberts, John Nord, Dr. Death Steve Williams, and so many more, offering a rare, behind the mask look at territory wrestling during one of its most volatile and magical eras.

This isn’t just a career recap.
It’s a deep dive into how a football player fell into wrestling… and became a monster!
