So today I want to talk about this concept of the hardest job that we're all doing (which is motherhood) and how can that be effortless? And what does a thriving mom look like? This is not meant to discredit anyone’s motherhood experience, but instead speak to a lot of the difficulties that many of us face every single day. But to me, effortlessness isn’t about what something looks like, but more on how my day to day feels – how I show up to and react to the normal parts of motherhood. If you are in a busy season of motherhood, it doesn't mean that you can't be doing nourishing things for yourself, but it does mean that sometimes that we're going to be maybe finding less rest for a period of time. However, I think having these nurturing things within our day that are just a part of our daily routine are so helpful for times when we are busy. Personally, if I didn't have my morning meditation, if I didn't have my journaling, if I didn't have my walks, if I didn't have my protein-filled meals, I would be endlessly burnt out. I have found these things to be so helpful for me that they have become a regular part of my routine and I hope that you can find items like that in your day, too. So that’s what we’re chatting about today – morning habits to set your day up for success. I had a hard time narrowing these down because I think that they're all important (the order mentioned here isn’t important)! I think that we all need to kind of analyze our lives, analyze our days and pick and choose what's going to be most nourishing to ourselves, most realistic, and what's going to work better for us.

Why Sleep Training is so Dangerous02 Jul 202400:30:32

Welcome back to The Resting in Motherhood Podcast, today’s episode is going to be a little bit spicy because we are talking about why sleep training is so dangerous. Spoiler alert: it is not about the attachment aspect, it is not about not responding to cries, or even the trauma aspect. What I want to talk about today is the fact that sleep training views sleep as a behavior, meaning that when you leave your child to cry it out, or you're doing Ferber, or the chair method, or pick up put down, these are all behavioral modifications, they have absolutely nothing, and I mean nothing, to do with sleep. Sleep is a biological function, which means nothing about sleep has been learned. The only thing that has been learned when sleep training is used is that cries won't be answered at night. So we have modified the behavior, we have modified the crying. We have not modified a biological function, which is sleep. I’m diving into this more as well as sharing what can be done if sleep is currently feeling unsustainable for you and your little one.

As I’m recording this episode, I’m going through a beautiful transition: it’s Lilah’s last day of school (and I was so worried about her starting school on her first day!) and the summer excitement is almost in full swing. This got me thinking about how there are also transition periods when it comes to baby and toddler sleep, whether it’s starting daycare, introducing a new caregiver, or simply old ways of supporting your child to sleep not working anymore. Sleep associations are what your little one’s brain associates with going to sleep (ex: bouncing), but as your child grows, you may want to introduce new sleep associations and phase out the old ones. In this episode, I’m sharing practical tips on how to gently switch your baby or toddler’s sleep associations to find more rest in motherhood while showing your LO that sleep is a safe space.

Recently I was able to practice finding rest in motherhood by holding a boundary by encouraging Lilah to stay over at her dad’s house. As we’ve entered this new norm of her staying at her dad’s house more often, I know the transition isn’t 100% easy for her, but it is a necessary one that she (and I) will be better for. This leads me into what I want to talk about today when it comes to protecting your mental health in motherhood – specifically in regards to protecting yourself against comparing yourself to other moms on the internet or in your real life, feeling like you're maybe not doing it right or like you're being judged. Using a Child Led Approach for Potty Learning (Training)07 May 202400:36:57

Today I want to chat about something that isn’t directly related to sleep, but is something that I often get asked about – potty training. However, I like to call it potty learning because it is possible to use a child led approach. I don’t like the term “training” whether we’re talking about sleep or using the bathroom because we shouldn’t have to train our kids to do anything. In my point of view, it’s cold and dehumanizing. Our children already know how to go to the bathroom, we just have to let them get comfortable with the new experience of using the toilet instead of a diaper. Just like with sleep, our kids will learn how to use the bathroom in their own unique timing (sans any developmental delays), but we have to give them the time and space to do so. My hope is that talking about toddler sleep more and more will normalize the fact that it is biologically normal for 12 months - 4 year olds to still be waking at night. But with that, I know toddler sleep can feel really hard, but I don't want it to be harder than it already is, especially while raising a toddler – we're already dealing with their development and their counter will and the big emotions and the tantrums. When I first started supporting families, I imagined that I was going to be working mostly with zero to 12 month olds, but as my business grew, I started seeing more and more older babies come in and I quickly found out that toddler sleep is actually my favorite type of sleep to support clients with. It doesn't mean that I don't love working with zero to 12 month olds, I do, but toddler sleep is a lot more complicated than baby sleep and I want to dive into why that is. This episode isn’t meant to scare you, especially if you're in the first year and things already feel so hard. Toddler sleep is not harder, I think it is just more complicated. Today on Resting in Motherhood I want to chat about what I believe are the hardest ages for sleep. This is based on what I experienced personally and what I see with my clients. In the episode, we’re going to focus on the ages of 4 months, 8-10 months, 12 months, and 18th months. It’s important to remember that sleep is unique to each child, but these are also the most common ages that clients come to me for support. So what I am going to do is  break down what's happening at each of these ages that lead to challenges with sleep and what you can do to move through the progressions – which is what I like to call them instead of regressions because these are times in our baby’s life where they are developing so much! Welcome back to Resting in Motherhood, how are you finding rest this week mama? Head over to Instagram and send me a message to let me know. I'm really excited to dive into what I want to talk to you about today, which is the fact that we cannot control sleep for our little ones. Let me say it again: you cannot control your baby’s sleep. This is something that I think a lot of us struggle with, and having gone through it myself and looking back, my hypothesis or my theory is that the reason we struggle so much with infant sleep is because it is out of our control, yet we feel like it's something that we should be able to control. We feel like this because the sleep training industry has given us this totally skewed perception that we can control nap lengths, that we can control exactly when our baby is going to sleep and we can make them sleep through the night. This false idea that we can control our baby's sleep, leads to so much doubt, shame and overwhelm in parenthood. So I want to use these next 30 minutes to share some solutions that will help you recognize what you can control to maximize sleep and stress for you and your baby!

Being a Highly Sensitive Person (HSP) in Motherhood with Alissa Boyer27 Feb 202400:37:03

Growing up I was called a diva because I needed things to be a certain way. For example, I remember taking out the batteries of all the clocks in our home because I couldn't stand the endless tick-tock noise. Fast forward into adulthood, when I finally learned that these aren’t just charming traits about me, but I’m actually a Highly Sensitive Person (HSP) – an individual who is thought to have an increased or deeper central nervous system sensitivity to physical, emotional, or social stimuli. When I became a mother, all of the things that made me an HSP became magnified, sometimes this was a good thing, but more often than not it made daily life feel so overwhelming. This is why I’m so excited to have Alissa Boyer, a Mentor for HSPs, on the show today. I know I share a lot about what's biologically normal when it comes to baby sleep, but there are things that I would 100% change around sleep if I could go back to Lilah’s first year of life. Of course, I didn’t know then what I know now, but there are still a lot of things that I wish I did differently. This episode is another reminder of the importance of tuning out the noise and tuning into your baby, their cues, and doing what works for you. I think sometimes we get stuck in habits or routines that might actually be making things harder for ourselves, I know this was definitely the case for myself in my first year of motherhood. So I wanted to share with you what I would go back and change or do differently – and hopefully if everything in my life works out, I would love to have another baby someday, and when I do, I’ll come back to this episode!

This thought process is a bad place to be in because it discredits us. It discredits our experience and it makes us feel like this attachment, respectful, gentle and responsive parenting means you have to forfeit your needs to meet your child’s. For new parents, especially mamas, it can feel like you’re walking blind. My job is literally based upon encouraging families to follow their instincts, to tune out the noise. I am 110% confident *most* days in how I'm parenting and the decisions I’m making. But it wasn’t always like this, especially in that first year. So throughout this episode I’m going to walk you through the steps you can take today to start reconnecting with yourself and your instincts. Now, before listening to this episode, I want to be clear that when I say the “sleep training industry” I do not mean the families that choose to use sleep training, I am talking about the industry that is making families think that sleep training is their only option. I’m going to share how the marketing and language that the sleep training industry uses is unethical and preys on parents who are sleep deprived and just trying to do their best. Toward the end of this episode, I’m going over what it means to understand your baby’s biological sleep and attachment needs so that you can make an informed decision on how you can holistically support your baby to sleep while also meeting your own needs. For this episode particularly, I am really nervous because it’s a pretty vulnerable topic – co-parenting with my ex-husband during and after our divorce. Before diving in, I want to acknowledge the fact that what I will be talking about today is not just my experience, it is also my ex-husband's experience and so I'm really going to try my best to remain real and authentic while also understanding and respecting that I need to respect my ex-husband's privacy, I need to respect that this was also his experience, not just mine. I also want to say that I know my experience as a whole is different because our divorce was mostly amicable and we do not currently do 50/50 parenting. I just know that this is something that I get asked about often in my DMs and emails so I wanted to make sure I shared my experience with you all. I'm here to say, you can have both. You can meet your needs, you can take care of yourself, you can thrive in motherhood while still meeting your child's needs, while still being a gentle, respectful, attachment centered parent. You can still co-sleep, you can still contact nap, you can still nurse to sleep, etc. while taking care of yourself and you can't thrive in motherhood. One of the things I’m most excited about for this podcast is bringing on guests to share their own motherhood stories and how they’ve come out confident on the other side. With that, I’m so excited to share our first guest interview with Tiffany Belanger of Cosleepy! I originally met Tiffany via Instagram since our businesses are in the same online space, but over time our friendship has really grown. I’ve considered myself so lucky to have at least one person who I know I can always count on that won’t judge my motherhood choices and actually support me in choosing what I believe is best for me and my daughter – and that’s what’s at the root of our conversation today – finding your village, especially if you choose a less traditional route of motherhood (like cosleeping and breastfeeding past infancy). Sleep Progressions: What they are and how to move through them30 Jul 202400:39:34

I find that there's a narrative in the sleep training industry that makes you feel like sleep regressions (or progressions as I prefer to call them) are these make or break moments if you don't do something “the right way”. I know a really common one for the four month progression is, “If your baby doesn't learn how to fall asleep independently during the four months sleep progression, they're never going to sleep through the night.” Well, that's a huge lie. So in this episode I want to talk about exactly what a sleep progression is and when you should expect them in the first year – specifically we’ll be talking about the 4 month, 6 month, 8 month, 10 month, and 12 month progressions. I’m sharing what's happening developmentally during each progression and how you can support your baby through them to find more sustainable rest in your home.

Sleep Schedules vs. Sleep Routines23 Jul 202400:35:17

“The best thing I ever did was put my baby on a sleep schedule,” is this something you’ve heard before? This may be the case for those easy going babies who easily adapt to change, but definitely not for the highly sensitive or more spirited children. In reality, sleep schedules are not realistic for a growing baby with unique sleep needs. Instead, we have to tune into the child in front of us, learn to recognize their sleep cues, and create a sleep routine. In this episode I’m sharing more on why a sleep schedule is not the answer, the differences between a sleep schedule and a sleep routine, and how to maximize sleep in your home.

Why Google Shouldn’t Be a Part of Your Village in Motherhood09 Jul 202400:31:54

Today’s episode is one that I’ve been thinking about for a really long time and that is why Google (or anyone who gives you one-size-fits-all parenting advice) should not be a part of who or what you’re consulting when you’re making parenting decisions. I share my experiences of feeling overwhelmed as a new mom and turning to Google for answers, only to find myself more stressed. I also take the time to emphasize the importance of tuning into your child's unique needs and trusting your parental intuition as a way to feel closer to your child and better support their unique sleep needs. Of course, I also discuss how personalized sleep consultations can help parents better understand and respond to their child's specific requirements and what it could look like to work together. No matter what you may be experiencing as far as your child’s sleep, I hope this episode helps you not feel so alone.

Rest, Reflection, and Reinvention: A Farewell (For Now) to the Podcast17 Dec 202400:22:07

Hi mamas, I have to admit that I have been putting off recording this episode because it's a very emotional one – it feels hard to share, but I also know that it feels like the right path forward. I’m diving into my emotional journey of motherhood, early entrepreneurship and now, the transition to business coaching. Also, how I’m learning to listen to my intuition which has led me to pause my work with sleep consulting and taking a step back from The Resting in Motherhood Podcast. This year especially has been a lesson on embracing change as I navigate my evolving identity. I’m still figuring out what this all looks like, so this is definitely a pause, not a goodbye.
