| RSR PC 085 Favorites of 2024 | 01 Jan 2025 | 01:58:01 | |
Redscroll & Friends Favorites of 2024 We have our (Rick & Josh’s) favorites of the year as usual. We have the Redscroll employee favorites also as usual. We’ve expanded beyond that even! Favorites from some folks in bands on our record label and folks we closely associate and collaborate on the regular! Friends! Most of those folks have recorded their own list and introduced themselves plus there’s a few that have submitted a list that we’ve creatively included. You can go on the web post to peruse their lists (redscroll records dot com) as well. They’ve all but a couple (yet) been on the podcast too so we’ll include their respective episode links on the site as well. Happy New Year! Redscroll Records Label Releases for 2024 We generally feel too close to them ourselves (Josh & Rick) to include the Redscroll releases as favorites, but of course they are. We wouldn’t release them otherwise! So, firstly, here’s a quick round up of what we’ve released this past year (and it’s been a good amount of great stuff)! In chronological order: We’ve got a couple slated for next year already so we’re not slowing down! Stay tuned for announcements on those! A couple more we were associate with with exclusive colors this year too! Kidnapped “Disgust” (DAZE) – would absolutely work with again, Lumpy is great. Kidnapped is great. Craven Faults “Bounds” (Leaf) Electronic experimental ambient act out of the Yorkshire, UK. We were contacted by Leaf about splitting a color (Lime Kiln Grey) with Norman Records in the UK and to have a unique OBI strip and it came out great. The record is really a great record and we’re happy to be associated with it and it’s our first overseas collaboration of any kind so that’s pretty exciting and we’re absolutely chuffed with how it turned out. FAVORITES LISTS!We've got our lists first. Staff picks follow. Then the rest will be in no particular order other than I will try to mix it up in the edit and put different ends of the spectrum back to back to keep y’all on your toes and hopefully interested in it all! Like I said before you’ll be able to check them all out on our web post. Links, pictures, etc. up on the site. I’ll assemble a playlist as well to publish with this so you can check all these things in more depth in your own time. That link will be on the web post as well. https://redscrollrecords.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/12/Josh-scaled.jpegJosh's Favorites of 2024: Shannon & The Clams “The Moon is in the Wrong Place” (Easy Eye Sound) The Bug “Machine” / “Machines I-IV” (Relapse) Pedro The Lion "Santa Cruz" (Polyvinyl) Clarissa Connelly "World of Work" (Warp) Castle Rat "Into the Realm" (King Volume / Kozmik Artifaktz / Wise Blood) Anja Huwe "Codes" (Sacred Bones) Amyl & The Sniffers "Cartoon Darkness" (Virgin / B2B / Rough Trade) (less music embedded, but just as fun!) | RSR PC 084 Ben Levesque of Manic Presents | 27 Nov 2024 | 01:05:39
Ben Levesque joins us at the shop to talk shop about shows, concerts, gigs and such! Ben has been with Manic Presents for about as long as we've had the store now (over 17 years!), but recently made a huge jump from working essentially 2 full time jobs to dedicating all his time to Manic Presents in a yet to be named position. When it comes to running and booking shows he's a jack of all trades. We talk about some inside baseball - the inner workings of things without blowing up any spots. We talk about music in general and we push out in all directions pertaining to Manic Presents and its venues and what Ben hopes to do with all of those and more! You can buy tickets to all their shows at the store with no online extra fees (they are emailed and not physical, but no fees). You can also check them out online (and buy tickets) through their site: Music on this episode: Rick: Josh: Ben: Exit: The Redscroll Podcast is a monthly show (first of the month going forward) that works as a companion to what we do at Redscroll Records in Wallingford, CT USA. | RSR PC 073 The Knife Kickers with John and Ryan | 01 Dec 2023 | 00:56:56
John Zaccaria writes music as The Knife Kickers. Friends fill out the band; it is a rotating cast with John at the center. Ryan Prushinski helped with the latest record that is set to come out in early 2024. Ryan played drums on just over half the songs (he also drums in Doom Beach who've been on the pod before; click here for that) and produced/engineered the recording of the album. We talk to John and Ryan about the new record, playing music in general and how the local indie rock scene gave way to his musical journey. We have the privilege of playing a few songs from the new album (one in full at the end of the interview and a couple partial songs in the mix of the interview). Check out previous material here: Music: Opening:

Undergrounds Record Cafe opened under a year ago (about 8 months) in Oakville, CT. https://undergroundsrecordcafe.com/ Nick and Dean of Undergrounds Record Cafe Dean will also be at our record fair next Sunday with a table full of records (and maybe some bread or some sort of sampling from the café?! | RSR PC 070 Ajna of Forest Thrall | 01 Sep 2023 | 01:33:46
Anonymity reigns within the dark realm of black metal. We interviewed an entity known to us here as Ajna. Ajna healms Forest Thrall and plays in Vengeance Sorcery, Cerberus, Sravana, Cemetery Lights and likely more currently active and some that are at this time conceptual acts. We talk about the Vengeance Sorcery experience of playing Nuclear War Now Fest in Tijuana, Mexico. Ajna goes into depth on the musical paths taken in listening and in playing and gives a short anecdote about how a member of Dokken presented as a sort of missed connection on a tow truck route. We talk about nature and the scourge of the litterer! We veer off on 108 mystic and odd directions and of course we talk about the music we're listening to!

FaFa joins us this month on the podcast. The full band! Allie, Alex, Kevin & Ren! We talk about what we're all listening to. We talk to Ren about the closing of the WamLeg (she & Andreas owned it most recently; formerly Wallingford American Legion). We talk about some food and general Wallingford and general CT hot spots. | RSR PC 068 Matt Westfall from Counter Weight Brewing Co | 01 Jul 2023 | 00:55:24
This month we had a chat with Matt Westfall, owner of Counter Weight Brewing Co. We've known Matt for years through music (going to punk shows in our youth) and Counter Weight has been a venue for music here and there since it opened (originally in Hamden and now in Cheshire). It's also where we hold an annual record fair (coming up in October again). We talk about how Counter Weight is ramping up their events schedule with music and comedy and various other events. We also do talk about beer. It's true. We talk about the Counter Weight accolades and how they like to take input from anyone under their roof and getting involved is highly encouraged - generally trying to teach from within and grow. We don't talk about sprint car racing or animating Bob's Burgers (things done by other people with the name Matt Westfall). We do talk about the role bocce has played in his life and the art and naming of beers. Conversation stretches out from there. There is a show we'll be selling records at coming up on July 6th, 2023: For more info on the brewery: Show note: N.A. | RSR PC 067 Ephyra - Vaughn and Senti | 01 Jun 2023 | 01:03:04
This month on the podcast we're joined by Senti & Vaughn of Ephyra - a collective of 7 folks releasing metalcore that sounds 20 years displaced! Really wild to take a listen for the first time and think this is not from that original era this takes heavy influence from. We talk about all the bands currently on the label and all the members of the bands and who plays what in which. Tight group playing in quite a few formations. We talk about everything we're listening to as usual and conversation ensues as usual! We talk about label demands and how Ephyra caught on much more than they ever expected faster than could be. CD and tape production specifics are talked about; nice little tips and tricks if you're starting anything up (one of which being - have someone who's good at accounting). Prayer for Cleansing, Undying, Incubus, Limp Bizkit, a laundry list of bands mentioned... Love Lost But Not Forgotten, deadeyesunder, A Thousand Falling Skies... Jay from Papercut may have been in the room too. | RSR PC 066 Ross Wightman | 01 May 2023 | 01:43:15
Ross Wightman performs and teaches and builds and makes/creates/composes. A classical double bassist who came to Connecticut through a program at Yale, Ross now finds himself traveling in the tri-state area weekly for work between NY, NJ and CT and seems to enjoy it! The Water Feature and Fiddle Henge are two instruments Ross has put together from scratch! We talk about all that and what led to it and we talk about what we're listening to as well!
From New Brunswick basement shows to playing in a tuxedo, Ross has had an academic and DIY varied background in music and life in general (skateboarding/punk intro etc.). Good talk here! | RSR PC 083 Disfigure - Nick And Tim | 01 Nov 2024 | 01:08:07
Nick & Tim helm a relatively new project called Disfigure. So far, they have just one tape release though they are working on more. Nick worked on many of the songs in relative isolation while living in New Hampshire and then recorded them with Tim once back in CT. We start as usual talking about what we're listening to. We recorded in October which lent itself to some opening talk about horror movies and bake off. We quickly veer into how the band started and what inspired it to happen; how they were inspired by Godflesh, d-beat and black metal to create their sound. Conversation continues down that path and veers off until we finally trail off talking about the first Redscroll release after becoming a store, Hostage Calm's Lens - a record Tim is on and a band Nick later joined and also a band that bares little other connection to this current project sound-wise other than the people who made it. Anyway! Battle metal madness!

| RSR PC 065 SHIRESE Matty Nicolas George | 01 Apr 2023 | 01:12:13 | |
We talked with Matty, Nicholas & George of Shirese this month! Lots of real CT insider talk in this one. I tried to insert context when needed. The New Hawaii, Popeye's Garage, the Osbourne House and more DIY spots of yore! Rock and Roll gets heralded as well as some jazz fusion. Good times. Shirese has a new record and played a great show at Cafe 9 in celebration of its release so we talk about that at length. And we just jaw on about any given subject - like music for instance. Lumpy (Andrew Wojcik) from the Daze label, King Nine, Sanction, Out for Justice and a bunch of bands joins us this month. We talk about the bands briefly. We talk about starting and running a label since 2019. And we talk about coffee and pizza. If you had ever wondered what it would be like if we hosted a food podcast this is as close as we get! We talk about how great CDs actually are and what makes a great CD package. We talk about merch that references specific CT institutions and how they are sold almost exclusively at fests out of state! We talk about the music we're listening to as well of course and veer off (in mostly food directions). This month we talked with Greg Thomas of Silver Bullet Studios, End and myriad musical projects. We talk about some of the music we're listening to and Greg drops lots of teasers on upcoming recordings. New With Honor. New Murmur. Will the Risk Taken album come out for the 20th Anniversary of the studio next year?! Should it?! Pressing questions that a select few forgot they cared about!(SIC) We really just scratch the surface with Greg and it's a great talk chalk full of knowledge nuggets. And then we talk about shipping for a while (so much that I cut some of it out!). And then more music! What a Colossal (wink, nudge) interview! | RSR PC 062 Favorites of 2022 | 01 Jan 2023 | 01:04:11
It is time for our list of favorites from the past year! We asked everyone here at the shop if they'd like to submit a list and 4/5 of us did! Josh and I are joined by our shipping specialist Caleb and we also read from Caren's and Lexi's lists. We talk about Sesame Street, Dora and various early musical memories as well as Reena's vlogging dad and Tate's Miracle Legion connection and building a shed instead of getting a job with Silas and various other divergent topics as it goes. And we start with the music we're listening to of course. Links:

| RSR PC 059 Nicole and Jeremy of Hardcore Sweet | 01 Oct 2022 | 01:18:33 | |
Nicole and Jeremy Braddock own and run Hardcore Sweet Bakery out of Watertown and their satellite location in Southington. Beyond the bakery, which grew out of a cupcake food truck, they also do community outreach programs like a book club, baking classes and a variety of events including the upcoming Punk Rock Flea Market on October 23rd at the Southington Drive-In. We talk about how they've grown their business. We talk about their various TV appearances on cooking competition shows. Lots of fun talk about best selling cupcakes based on different band names and songs and custom cakes based on some outlandish customer requests. Lots of fun was had and topics branch out from there.

| RSR PC 058 AUSTIN LARKIN AND ZACH ROWDEN | 01 Sep 2022 | 01:56:59 | |
This month brings a return guest in Zach Rowden and a new guest in Austin Larkin. Together they perform as Red Yellow Blue Green Black. Definitely go back and listen to the Zach and Henry (Tongue Depressor) podcast if you hadn't yet! For this episode we focused more on Austin as we had yet to dive into his musical background. We of course also talk about lots of things we're listening too. Austin created sirens for the recent tour with Tongue Depressor - some deep insight on those. General talk of musical education background and Austin's brief stint in a band signed to Sub Pop and how that led to a few years at school for music and then on to Jakarta to further study gamelan. Lots of insight and interesting musical and other art related divergences follow. Give a listen! Chloe and Matt are the real deal when it comes to rockin'! We talk about some of our favorite rock doc's and local venues. Rock dominates the talk for sure. Check it out.

We are joined by a man, Byron Coley, who has more stories than we could fit into every past episode of our podcast and we surely packed as much as we could into a single sit down. We start off with some talk about what we're listening to as usual and we move on to record fair talk (don't forget about our Record Fair at Counter Weight Brewing Co. on October 13th featuring Byron selling upstairs!). Byron tells tales of driving John Fahey around looking for classical records, his process for listening to 10 new records everyday, writing for weekly publications and magazines like the Wire, Forced Exposure, Spin and on and on. We talk about the label and store he runs with his friend Ted in Florence, Western Massachusetts. We go back to his start writing a tour diary with Devo, but this is yet a scratch on the surface and this podcast is our longest yet for good reason! Check it out! We talk about what we've listened to and do include a list from Josh. We talk about the origins of Revenge Body and Chopin and Depeche Mode (recorded before Fletch's passing - RIP). Sibling noise. This month we're joined by Ryan and James of DOOM BEACH! We talk about music we're all listening to. We have a good time. Tales of Lightning Bolt and tour stops. Just four folks jawin' away about music really. Oh, and let's not forget all the talk of the B-52's - the very real inspiration for this beach themed duo!

Jeff joins us on the podcast this month to talk primarily about his project, FiFac. Electronic music production with a wide genre base beyond bass and improvisation. We talk about the FiFac internet presence (and the odd Twitter relationship / rivalry with CT Verses! It's almost entirely positive - spoiler!). The release show on April 8th at Never Ending Books vol. 2 in New Haven is discussed (info can be found on Jeff's Instagram page here). Bands named after other musicians and celebrities? Singing the praises of Willimantic Records and going there for shows during this pandemic. Ok ok ok, I'm just naming random topics. Listen to the podcast and hear it all. We stay on topic, mostly. Each tape is professionally duplicated in an edition of 50 so get 'em while the gettin' is good! It's the beginning of a new year so first off HAPPY NEW YEAR! Hoping the best for everyone in the coming year! Rick and Josh host the podcast with no guests and plenty of music clips. We assembled a list for each of our full time staff here. Rick and Josh rip through their respective lists and then those submitted by Caren and David. All of those are listed below. Tune in for some light commentary and clips of them all to check out. This past year brought us a ton of excellent music and that's definitely reflected in these lists we've put together here. There is also a Spotify playlist linked below to give everything a deeper listen (aka check out the full songs and not just clips). The podcast opens with some music by Tongue Depressor who we are very thankful to have done an amazing release with this year. The rest of the tracks are from each of these albums listed below (in the order they appear below). Quick note here too that Rick and Josh go into further depth on the podcast, but we (Rick & Josh) basically didn't include any artists in our favorites that we have a favorable prejudice towards, but we didn't preclude Caren and David from doing that. :) List format: [Band "Album" (Record Label)] Rick's Favorites of 2021:The Bug "Fire" (Ninja Tune) Amyl & The Sniffers “Comfort To Me” (ATO Records / B2B Records / Rough Trade) Best hardcore 7” of the year: Honorable mentions: Aaron Dilloway & Lucretia Dalt “Lucy & Aaron” (Hanson Records) Astrid Øster Mortensen "Gro Mig En Blomst" (Förlag För Fri Musik) FULL POST WITH LINKS: http://redscrollrecords.com/2022/01/rsr-pc-050-redscroll-favorites-of-2021.html

| RSR PC 048 AMANDA SCHUTZMAN | 01 Oct 2021 | 00:48:37 | |
Well we certainly talked some inside baseball with Amanda this month! I (Rick) took liberties with editing on this. It'll make for a more amusing listen if you don't have deep inside knowledge of music retail. If you are in music retail it's not so disguised that you maybe can't figure out the companies discussed. Y'know, MEGACORP!? I also took the opportunity to add some spooky sounds since this is episode that is most current for Halloween. Heck, you may even figure out your own side story to go along with those sounds. Oh yeah, so we talked about music retail business, record shows, the various stores Amanda has worked at from Slipped Disc to Needle & Groove, and Generation to her job as a representative at All Media Supply and her work putting on record shows with Vinyl Revolution. We also talk about what we're listening to, what Amanda is listening to and what Amanda grew up listening to including her musical background.

| RSR PC 043 Steve Hartlett of Ovlov and Stove | 01 May 2021 | 01:14:27 | |
Steve Hartlett joined us on the podcast this month. We talk about the forthcoming Ovlov record fairly in depth. We talk about the rotating members of the band and how Stove relates to that as well. We also talk about Steve's growing up in a strict Christian home and having a neighbor (who was the drummer in Self Defense) hand him a punk tape to open his world. We talk about how Steve's dad dated Linda Blair (yep, that one from The Exorcist). And we talk about a bunch of stuff really. Plus we talk about what we're listening to. Check it out!

| RSR PC 042 Ask Us Questions | 01 Apr 2021 | 00:37:59 | |
On this month's podcast we took questions through Instagram. We talked quickly about RSD and our 14th Anniversary. Questions ranged from why we opened a store in Wallingford to what music got us through this past year. Lots of like-minded questions came in so we generally just answered one of each of those so as to not repeat ourselves. We also talk about what we're listening to and there's some music inserted along the way in the answers to a couple questions. | RSR PC 041 Amnesiac - Mahoney And Danny | 01 Mar 2021 | 00:54:56
Amnesiac's Mahoney and Danny are our guests this month on the podcast. We talk about how much Danny worships the ground Maynard walks on and that's pretty much it (this is sarcastic and you'll get it when you listen). We talk about how Amnesiac came about as a band and what it's like to be a band right now in the time of Covid 19. We, as usual, start it off by talking about the music we're listening to! We talk about Gene Simmons and Kiss and also Scorpions. Honestly, way too much talk about Puscifer, but it's an entertaining episode so stop reading this and just listen.

On this episode of the podcast we talk to Randall (drums) and John (guitar) of Afghan Haze. We talk about their album they recently released and what it's like doing that when you can't play a show. This month’s edition of the podcast is a little different than usual. We have no guest. We play whole songs at the end in a playlist (time stamped track list below). And most importantly we discuss three big pieces of news for us! News: More on all of that on the podcast. We talked to Ben Michael on episode 37. Ben is the General Manager of WESU, Middletown - 88.1FM, wesufm.org. [caption id="attachment_6122" align="alignnone" width="2560"] Ben Michael[/caption] We talked about the mission of WESU, the part it plays in the community and of some particular shows of interest on there. Some history of the station is touched on as well as some noted alumni. And we talk to Ben about his personal history with the station and with music in general and about his homestead farm with his mule and donkey and chickens and goats! We once again recorded outside in our back parking lot to maintain a nice social distance and it once again led to us dealing with the elements - especially some strong winds and of course the passing trains. | RSR RSR PC 036 Paul UNDERCLIFF | 01 Aug 2020 | 01:25:22
On this episode of the podcast we talk to Paul of Undercliff, a doom band from right nearby in central CT. We talk about the new record released just about a month ago. We talk about the now torn down facility the band is named after. We talk about Tyvek suits and coping during the pandemic in general. We once again did this one outside. Paul brought his own mic, stand and chair! Paul also runs PLX-FX – a pedal making venture. We talk about that too (or mostly he does as we know not much of that world). Lots of talking beyond that too. A good time to be had / was had.

We talk about Michael's many projects / bands including most prominently Slyne & The Family Stoned. | RSR PC 035 Stone Jaw - Terry | 01 Jul 2020 | 01:28:36
On this episode of the Redscroll Podcast we talk with Terry of Stone Jaw (and a few other projects). We talk about Dungeons & Dragons and dungeon synth. We talk about getting into noise and the various approaches to it and all the potential people finding it during their time locked in their living quarters. We talk about NPR for some reason. And we even talk about Stone Jaw as a musical noise project a little. Terry lets us know how he particularly got into making noise versus the art mediums he was previously into - how his visual works led him down that path. Talk of John Cage and Robert Rauschenberg ensues. Then we bring it all home with sports. How we got there you'll have to listen.

| RSR PC 034 SCRAPEDX | 01 Jun 2020 | 00:44:19 | |
On this episode we talk to Josh of Scrap.edx. An outlier in the Connecticut musical landscape. A rhythmic broken beat industrial project. Josh also has a couple other projects. The Carapace which was a one album and done field recording based idea and Children of Men which is a current hip hop cooperative where he has the roll of producer. http://redscrollrecords.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/05/Josh-Scrapedx.png We also talk about dealing with Covid-19 and how that effects his daily, professional and creative life among other things. We talk about touring, breakcore basement shows and driving back and forth to Toronto to basically see one act’s set. I (Rick) regret that I didn’t bring up how much we listened to Stabyouintheheadandeatyourfaceoff’s, “Killin’ Toys,” CD (a Redscroll release from 2003 before I was involved) on that trip. Oh yea, and we talk about some other stuff and Josh and I do the standard opening banter with current listening and a quick brief on the store (super quick).

Josh and Rick discuss the music they're listening to beforehand as well as how the store is currently operating during the pandemic. | RSR PC 032 Anxious | 01 Apr 2020 | 01:09:56
We talked with Grady, Johnny and Dante of Anxious. Let it be known we talked to them early in the month of March so the ominous cloud of doom and actual anxiety and nervousness of a quarantined society wasn't on our mind quite so presently as it is now. Escape with us back to a time when we could talk about European tour dates as if they were absolutely happening and not possibly cancelled or postponed (really, anything mentioned that you're curious about you should check the status of because it's not a definite). [caption id="attachment_5989" align="alignnone" width="474"] Dante (Left), Grady (Center), Johnny (Right)[/caption] We talked about the formation of the band at a very young age from being heavily influenced early on by Fat Wreck bands and morphing into the band they are today - a band with a couple small (7" and cassette) releases on Triple-B Records with a full length on the way. A band that has opened reunion shows for Saves the Day and done sold out gigs with Knuckle Puck. They have level heads and are really working hard at this with all the youthful energy they can possibly use (have I mentioned how young they are? Dante is finishing his senior year of High School right now!).
