| From 'Say You Will' to Legacy: Kanye’s 808s and Heartbreak | 23 May 2024 | 01:59:42 | |
Welcome back to another episode of The Record Report! DISCLAIMER: This episode came out before the Kendrick Lamar vs Drake Beef picked up. If you want to hear our breakdown of the music that came out, peep our full breakdown episode In this episode of Record Report Podcast, Ahmad and Vance take a dark yet fascinating turn as they explore Kanye West’s fourth studio album, 808s & Heartbreak. Released in 2008, this project shocked the music world. While Kanye’s previous albums celebrated clever rhymes and soulful beats within the boundaries of hip-hop, 808s ventured into 80s New Wave minimalism, telling a raw and emotional story of pain, loss, and reflection. The album, inspired by the tragic loss of Kanye’s mother and a tough breakup, became a pivotal moment in his career. It moved away from his signature sound, embracing autotune and stripped-down production to create an entirely new sonic landscape. Despite early criticism, 808s & Heartbreak became a cultural cornerstone, shaping the Blog Era of music in the 2010s and inspiring a generation of artists. Joined by special guest Z (@ZTVInspire), Ahmad and Vance dive into their top three tracks, discuss the criticism and eventual legacy of the 808s, and explore its lasting impact on modern music. They also touch on topics like the Kendrick vs. Drake beef, Mr. Hudson’s role in the album, and Lil Wayne’s autotune era. Stream now to hear their take on this groundbreaking project!

| Maggot Brain | 14 Aug 2023 | 01:36:10 | |
Welcome back to the Record Report! This week, we're going back in time to listen to a Funky classic. We're talkin' about Maggot Brain, the 3rd studio album by Funkadelic. Dropping 2 years before Hip Hop was born in 1971, this album would later inspire the next generations in the genre. The 7-track LP is completely produced by George Clinton and is a journey through cosmic keys, crazy guitar riffs, and aggressive drums but with a savory soulful undertaste. While it managed to come out strong with critical and commercial success at the time, it ties deeply into rappers' minds from Los Angeles to New Orleans. As always, we choose their top three tracks from Maggot Brain, talk about the historical context of the project's success, and tell some of the stories we've heard about the album's creation. we also talk about what we're listening to, lazy producers, and Flying Lotus. @Yo_Ahki/@VanceB_ Listen to this new episode and previous others on: Apple Podcasts(https://tinyurl.com/jydzz9fk) Spotify (https://tinyurl.com/c3u77hcf) Anchor (https://anchor.fm/recordreport) Follow Record Report Podcast on: Instagram: (@RecordRepPod) Facebook: Facebook.com/RecordReportPodcast Twitter: https://twitter.com/recreppodcast?lang=en #MaggotBrain #Funkadelic #Parliament #Funk #Detroit #HipHop #RandB #Rock #FlyingLotus #Soul #CosmicSlop #Radio #Podcast

Welcome back to the Record Report! This week, we're taking a trip inside the mind of a musical genius. There are a lot of different opinions about Mac Miller. His original brand was polarizing in the Blog Era, but his musical growth always remained intact throughout his career. That seems to be how he made Faces, his 11th mixtape that was released on May 11th, 2014. Compared to many other albums, this one takes a serious dark turn. The Pittsburgh artist managed to blend jazz with modern sounds to illustrate the madness that he encompassed on his journey. Fortunately, there are bright spots that also boost his boisterous personality, and both highs and lows come together to create an experience that makes you both excited for Mac Miller's experimentation, but more concerned about the demons he faced. In this episode, we choose our top three tracks, talk about some of the samples used in Faces, and talk about how it felt to listen to the album knowing the struggles he faced in life until his end. we also talk about what we're listening to, and secret/hidden features in music. Welcome back to the Record Report! This week, we're going overseas to hear a rebel's sound. We're talking about British artist M.I.A.'s 2013 Matangi to be exact. M.I.A's career was at a very weird period in the later part of the Blog Era. While the artist's diverse array of sound helped contribute to the early rise of international influence in the 2000s, her success also made her a target for controversy. Fortunately, Matangi was both a daring response to her criticism while still also managing to get people of different backgrounds to the dancefloor. In this episode, we choose our top three tracks, we talk about M.I.A's diverse musical connections to Hip Hop (maybe Baltimore Club Music), and talk how she's contributed to the rise of music across the globe in the modern era of music. Welcome back to the Record Report! This week, we're gonna take you back to 1996 with Tupac's first posthumous album The Don Killuminati: The 7 Day Theory. When this album dropped, it was a very confusing point in time for the music world. It dropped two months after Tupac's death, and it wasn't even with his actual stage name. This was the first (and last) album under the moniker Makaveli, and for many fans, The Don Killuminati started the spreading of rumors that speculated Tupac was alive. However, the project had gems like "Hail Mary" and also began the rapper's musical run in his afterlife. In this episode, we choose our top three tracks, talk about the history surrounding the sound and message of the project, and kind of figure out why this album still resonates to this day for many rap fans young and old. | GOT IT GOOD | 14 May 2023 | 01:14:30
Welcome to Episode 3 of your favorite music podcast, The Record Report. This week, we'll be taking a BUS RIDE (all puns intended) through Kaytranada's debut studio album, 99.9%. Following a slew of SoundCloud flips to get people to the dancefloor in the early 2010s like his flip of Teedra Moses' track "Just Wanna Be Your Girl," Kaytranada was on a steady rise in the music industry. The hype only kicked into a second gear when he signed to XL Recordings in 2014 and the label eventually announced that he would drop a debut album. "LEAVE ME ALONE" was the lead single that most fans knew, but the Montreal producer had a knack for teasing tracks from 99.9% throughout several live mixes while touring, from Broccoli City Fest to Afropunk. When 99.9% came out, the album met much-deserved critical and commercial acclaim for having such a refreshing sound in (what was at the time) the turning tide of music. However, what we didn't know coming back into it now is how much it's aged like a fine wine. Not only was Kaytra's debut a precursor for his historical Grammy-winning album BUBBA, but it included a wide variety of talent from young legends like Craig David and Phonte to artists that set the tone for the industry in the 2010s like Syd and Anderson .Paak. For this episode, we choose our top 3 songs from 99.9%, talk about the album's importance to the electronic/house genre at that time, and give our flowers to several underrated artists who made a splash in the 2010s from River Tiber to BadBadNotGood. We also talk about the lack of good R&B (from men) that doesn't focus mainly on sex, and mention what we listen to breaking shit in the gym. @Yo_Ahki/@VanceB_ Listen to this new episode and previous others on: Apple Podcasts(https://tinyurl.com/jydzz9fk) Spotify (https://tinyurl.com/c3u77hcf) Anchor (https://anchor.fm/recordreport) Follow Record Report Podcast on: Instagram: (@RecordRepPod) Facebook: Facebook.com/RecordReportPodcast Twitter: https://twitter.com/recreppodcast?lang=en #Kaytranada #999 #Montreal #Canada #AndersonPaak #Syd #House #Electronic #EDM #Soulection #Podcast

Welcome back to the Record Report We've made it to season 3, and thank you all for staying with us! For this episode, we'll be diving into Chance the Rapper's sophomore mixtape Acid Rap. When Chance the Rapper dropped Acid Rap in 2013, music was in a transitional period. It was a time when Chicago already had its lead star in Kanye West, who made mainstream headlines for My Dark Twisted Fantasy, and the growth of the GOOD Music record label. The Chi also had a budding internet music scene thanks to Chief Keef's 2012 viral hit "I Don't Like," bringing the city's Drill scene to a national audience. However, Chance reached the blog scene with his debut project, 10 Day Tape, but really started building momentum toward his sophomore project Acid Rap. The LP was the perfect storm for the artist, featuring a diverse array of sound as well as a slew of stars including Childish Gambino, Twista, Saba, Vic Mensa, Action Bronson, and NoName. In our Season 3 premiere, we choose our top 5 songs and talk about Acid Rap's greatness, how pivotal the album was in the music world at the peak of the blog era, and Chance's growth in the music industry. | "Amerikkka's Most Wanted" | 10 May 2021 | 01:48:48
In the early 90s Ice Cube was in a transitional period in his career. The soon-to-be Los Angeles icon had just left NWA, and while his creative freedom was awaiting, the rapper was still facing animosity from group members and fans for departing. Fortunately, Cube confidently came through with his debut project Amerikkka's Most Wanted and it was a project that showcased the rapper's raw rhymes with militant production through himself, Sir Jinx, and the Bomb Squad. Along with immediate success and critical acclaim, Amerikka's Most Wanted was proof that Ice Cube can make a successful project as a solo artist. For the fans, it was a shift in the trajectory of West Coast hip hop. With this week's guest Ryan back in the building, Ahmad and Vance choose their favorite tracks from Amerikkka's Most Wanted, how the message from Ice Cube's "Turn Off The Radio" moved into the streaming industry, and how the album lives on after 30 years. Kehlani got robbed of a great summer wave. When she dropped her sophomore LP It Was Good Until It Wasn't in 2020, many listeners had to listen to the album from home due to the CoVid-19 outbreak. However, not only did have an album that supplied a surplus of music gems that could fit a playlist for the whip or the bedroom, many of the relatable tracks opened up about the Oakland singer's personal life as she continued to pave her way into making music at the highest level. With production from Jake One, Boi-Ida, and The Rascals, the album had the potential of contributing to R&B's revival thanks to the variety of artists blending the genre. With a baller-ass sportswriter like Rhiannon Walker joining Vance and Ahmad this week, you know you're going to be in for a treat. The three choose their favorite songs from the project, talk about hating the club (specifically being there for a significant other), why Tory Lanez is a certified-fuccboi, and why It Was Good Until It Wasn't needs to be the album of summer situationships in 2021 as Kehlani. 2011 was such a great year for the blog era of music. Don't believe us? That year includes debut releases from future superstars like Frank Ocean, Tyler the Creator, and The Weeknd. However, it was also another year of consistency from an artist that is the poster child for this characteristic in Hip Hop. We're talking about Curren$y the Spitta and one of his most highly acclaimed mixtapes in his rather large catalog, Covert Coup. Not only was this a critical project for the Louisiana rapper's musical development at the peak of the industry in the blog era (that being the late 2000s/early 2010s), but it is exclusively produced by Grammy-nominated producer The Alchemist, includes features from artists like Grammy-nominated Freddie Gibbs and the late Prodigy, and was also a pivotal mixtape in Curren$y's musical trajectory into being one of Hip Hop's most consistent artists of the modern era. For a certain time as an indie act through his label Jet Life Recordings, Curren$y released projects on Bandcamp following Covert Coupe. Most of the projects were collaborative mixtapes with DJ Drama and Harry Fraud. However, these projects truly stretched Spitta's musical element before he continued to release mixtapes every year until now. This project helped start Curren$y's collaborative LPs with producers and even included talent that much of the rap community see as modern icons. This week, with the homie Dave (@TrapBasquiat) pulling up for the four-peat, we go song-by-song on the 10-track LP and talk about previous Curren$y concerts we've experienced, Freddie Gibbs' rise in the blog era, and how this project became arguably the best mixtape in Curren$y's long list of projects.
