| EP. 85 - How Bayside Gamed the "Human Algorithm" with TAWTTBA | 22 Oct 2024 | 00:50:30 | |
This week we sit down with songwriter, guitarist, and frontman Anthony Raneri of the Long Island-based rock band Bayside. We invited Anthony to walk us through the unique writing and release process of the band's most recent album titled There Are Worse Things Than Being Alive. You’re heard him explain how Bayside’s sound has progressed throughout the band's career spanning almost 2 and a half decades, and how this album challenged them to expand their understanding of what Bayside Is? Bayside has become known for their almost ‘cult-like’ fanbase, and we dive into how a band like Bayside works to balance outside expectations with their own internal drive to explore new avenues - not just in the music itself - but in the way they approach presenting it to the world as well. We touch upon how the band felt somewhat discouraged with their previous approaches to recording and releasing records, and how it led them on a quest to game what Anthony calls the “human algorithm” by releasing every song on the album separately. You’ll hear us discuss what it’s like for Bayside to truly live inside of a record, how Anthony tries to stay in that creative headspace throughout the process, and ultimately why he also believes in the self discipline required to take breaks in order to allow life back into the creative process. 9:45 - How Baysides sound has developed over the years 23:25 - Gaming the "human algorithm" 45:15 - Self discipline and putting "life" back into the creative process 51:05 - Mastery of songwriting is being able to get out of your head CLICK HERE to submit your album via Groover to be featured on an upcoming episode of The Record Process this season! | EP. 84 - Youth Fountain's 'Together In Lonesome' | 15 Oct 2024 | 00:49:42
This week we feature our conversation with canadian songwriter and vocalist Tyler Zanon, who’s project is better known by the name Youth Fountain. We discuss Tyler’s journey as a musician, and how Youth Fountain has transformed over the years. Tyler takes us through how his writing process has evolved over the years, and how his 2023 album Together In Lonesome forced him to grow even more with the help of producer Anton Delost. He recalls what it was like to finally have an outside perspective willing to help him break apart the songs and put them back together in a more compelling way. Tyler shines a light on the two specific songs from the album that really took him out of his comfort zone, and he also details the two songs on the album that underwent the most drastic changes throughout the process. You’ll hear Tyler zero in on his lyrical approach to capturing everything he wants to say in just the right way, and how trusting in his collaborators - mixed with the pressure of a finite timeline - ultimately afforded him the ability to create his favourite album yet. 11:40 - Working with producer Anton DeLost 25:10 - Becoming more comfortable with reworking ideas 33:45- Avoiding songs sounding the same CLICK HERE to submit your album via Groover to be featured on an upcoming episode of The Record Process this season! | EP. 77 - Afterthoughts to Antidote: The Irish Emo Saga of Greywind | 12 Mar 2024 | 01:08:51
This week on TRP, Tom and I are joined by Steph and Paul O’Sullivan of the Irish Emo Rock band Greywind. Greywind burst on to the UK scene in 2017 when their debut album ‘Afterthoughts’ began turning heads across the rock world, capturing serious praise from BBC Radio Royalty and festival critics alike. While it seemed for a moment that they were poised to be on the fast track to living out most bands dream-scenario, the whirlwind of events leading up to this the recording of this LP - and the collapse of their team shortly thereafter - was anything but joyful. You’ll hear how the formation of their band resulted from the loss of a dear family member. The siblings unpack their journey from a humble demo of the first song they’d ever written together to recording a full-length album with producer Jason Perry at the legendary Sonic Ranch in El Paso, TX. And finally, they explain how they not only survived the gauntlet of being dropped by their labels, managers, agents - but how they were able to emerge from the pandemic with their best songs to date and more fans than ever before. Listen to Greywind on Spotify Greywind's Official Website 15:10 - Tracking the song 'Afterthoughts' in a single day! 26:55 - Getting different opinions from different managers 36:55 - Detaching from the studio after a day in the studio 43:25 - Self doubting when in a big studio 53:40 - Supporting Thrice in London then playing Reading and Leeds 1:06:15 - Promoting the record... then go viral If you enjoyed this episode, please consider joining our supportors club with a small donation HERE Have a question? | Season Two Coming Soon! - Special Guests, Interviews, Giveaways, and more... | 01 Feb 2022 | 00:02:14
In season one of The Record Process, we took a linear stroll through the common practices and philosophies behind making records. We followed the spark of creativity from inception to conclusion, offering up our personal experiences along with generally accepted production ideologies. As we neared the end of season one, it was clear we had only begun to scratch the surface… With room for nuance and a myriad of variables behind every creative scenario, there are endless possibilities to uncover. There is only one way for us to continue this journey - we have to go deeper… With season 2 of The Record Process we’ll attempt the impossible by simultaneously expanding and contracting the scope of the show - First, we’ll be narrowing our focus by dedicating each weeks episode to the story behind the making of ONE uniquely groundbreaking album. Through this format, we’ll be expanding the range of voices and perspectives involved in bringing these masterpieces to life: sitting down with artists, musicians, songwriters, producers, engineers, and other creative collaborators to understand how the production process has the power not only to shape the way these records sound, but the way they are received by audiences as well. Our new interview-based framework will serve as a more dynamic weekly reminder that when it comes to the craft of making music that moves people, the possibilities are endless… So catch up on previous episodes you’ve missed from season one now, and go subscribe to the show wherever you listen to podcasts. A record is the sum total of countless artistic decisions. In this episode, the True Level Studio guys discuss how certain production choices at every stage of the process can inform the genre of a song and why those choices matter. The topics they cover include: -How composition choices like lyrics and rhythm can imply a specific genre -How the specific sounds and instruments you choose impact the way a song is digested and perceived -Mixing and Mastering decisions based on reference tracks and the intention platform for the song -Loudness norms for different genres - and does it really matter -Visual components like artwork and live performance setups and how they can influence the listeners perception For more info, visit our website at: www.truelevelstudio.com/therecordprocess Follow us on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/therecordprocess/ https://www.instagram.com/truelevelstudio/?hl=en Show Hosts: Casey Cavaliere (Producer / Mixer / Guitarist of The Wonder Years) www.CaseyCavaliere.com www.thewonderyearsband.com IG: https://www.instagram.com/case_rock/?hl=en Tom Conran (Audio Engineer / Producer / Acoustician ) www.TomConranAudio.com IG: https://www.instagram.com/thetomconran/?hl=en Adam Ackerman (Songwriter / Recording Artist / Multi-Instrumentalist) www.AtomSonicConcepts.com IG: https://www.instagram.com/theadamackerman/?hl=en Share any thoughts, questions, comments, or suggestions with us via email at: TrueLevelStudio@gmail.com Artwork by Holly Smith ( https://www.instagram.com/_hollysmith/?hl=en ) Music: Main Theme - "Almas" by Casey Cavaliere Additional Music by Tom Conran Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-record-process--4847305/support.

| EP 83 - An Inside Look At La Dispute's 'Rooms Of The House' | 10 Oct 2024 | 01:00:03 | |
On this episode of the record process, we welcome Bradley Vander Lugt to the show. Bradley is a composer, drummer, and founding member of the michigan-based band La Dispute. Bradley was gracious enough to walk us through the making of La Disputes critically acclaimed 3rd studio album Rooms of the House, which was released on March 18th, 2014. He details the way in which the band approached the writing for this record differently - had how many of those details would later be documented in a companion book called Yesterday's Home, which was released alongside the record. He shares some of his biggest takeaways from the band's early days of playing shows, and how they ultimately choose to seclude themselves in a remote rental property in Michigan's upper peninsula when it came time to dig into the writing process for this album. You’ll hear how the band recorded ambient sounds for the album, even capturing samples of remote radio station broadcasts, all as part of their effort to zero in on the sonic palette for the project. You learn about the band's experience working with producer Will Yip for the first time on this album, and how they decided to approach tracking the unique vocal delivery of the band's singer Jordan Dreyer. Rooms of the House was named one of Rock Sound Magazines Top 50 Albums in 2014, and the process of its creation is still a testament to the artistry of the band over a decade later. 15:55 - 16:35 Biggest takeaway from early days of playing shows: 13:55 - 14:35 19:10 - 21:05 Gearing up to write LP3 26:10 - 27:25 Recording ambient sounds for the record 57:40 - 59:30 Tracking and Jordan’s vocal CLICK HERE to submit your album via Groover to be featured on an upcoming episode of The Record Process this season!
