(4/26/22) Markets followed-up Friday's losses by opening down on Monday and re-test lows from February and March, then bounced back up for a half-percent gain on the day. We've seen this kind of reflexive activity before, when markets are trolling along the bottoms...Markets remain over-sold, futures are weaker this morning, with more earnings reports to come today which might set the tone in Tech for tomorrow. Money flows are beginning to turn positive, with follow-through expected over the next few days. For positioning purposes, we're expecting a rally back to the top of the downtrend line--there is still a lot of angst over inflation, economics, and next week's Fed meeting. What the Fed has to say next week will drive the markets for the next month. If the Fed admits inflation has already peaked and deflation is nigh--any type of dovish language--that will help buoy the stock market in the short term. If, however, the Fed leans more hawkishly, with 50-basispoint rate hikes to come in an aggressive fight with inflation, that will dampen stocks. We're not quite "all clear" yet, but there is a short-term tradable opportunity from these over-sold conditions. As we have said before, use any rally to rebalance risk in portfolios. (4/25/22) Markets broke support of the consolidation range on Friday, leading to a sharp sell-off. Lower market futures this morning would indicate a re-test of March lows. While frustrating, markets remain over-sold, and we're looking for some kind of impetus for a counter-trend reflexive rally. Overall sentiment is very negative, and positioning by professional traders is also quite light, suggesting overall market psychology is very negative as well. Contrarians would believe we've got a nice set up for a reflexive rally, but such activity may not get very far as we move into May and the Fed next meeting--likely to produce another rate hike. Any dovish language at the meeting--like a "peak of inflation," would tend to help fuel a bit of a rally. We're reticent about selling right now, and looking for a bounce that could be quite vicious. And if you're not happy with your positioning, not liking this market, look for a rally opportunity to rebalance your risk. Caveat: Don't expect any rally at this point to take us back up to all-time highs. There are too many headwinds, earnings have been just okay--not really great--and the companies that are missing being severely punished. (4/21/22) The Major Cap companies' earnings reports are just part of the overall investing picture. The S&P is setting up to rally to previous highs, but because the Fed is about to start hiking rates, we're expecting continued pressure on equity prices. The NASDAQ is over-sold, like the S&P, but still trading below its 50-DMA. Tech stocks have been under more pressure, lately. A lift to the S&P will also drag the NASDAQ up, as well. Disinflationary pressure in the economy will also lead to a rotation back into growth stocks, which tend to do better in a disinflationary environment. Small-Cap stocks are the most-impacted by slower economic growth, higher interest rates, and inflation; subsequently, these have been really under-performing the larger-cap indexes. Small-Caps are about half-way through the cycle from over-sold to over-bought, and have shown improved performance. Long-term trends have not been favorable. Mid-Caps look almost identical to Small-Caps--a lot of under-performance relative to the S&P. Emerging Markets continue to be under pressure from slower economic growth, inflation, and the war in Ukraine. Use any bounce here to reduce your exposure.
