S5 EP08: PawHealthAI; One Place for Your Pug's Health13 Sep 202601:03:24

Kenji has been our ‘guinea pug’ again — this time for Paw Health AI, an APP built by Melbourne's Jim after his Vizsla Jersey ate rat poison an hour and ten minutes from the nearest vet.

Jim joins me to talk about Evie, the AI Assistant living in the APP, and why the clever bit turned out to be the boring bit: one place for the microchip, the council rego, the vaccination dates and the vet reminders, instead of a notebook next to the pug drugs.

We get into weekly check-ins, why your groomer might spot something before you do, uploading a genetic test, and the question I've been chewing on — what happens in an APP like this when our Puggies pass?

S5 EP07: Sarah Bot; The Force-free Trainer in My Pocket 09 Aug 202601:04:58

Two months ago, I handed Kenji over to a robot.

Not quite — but close. Our force-free fur-end Sarah Rutten from The Canine Perspective is back on the PUGCAST, and this time she’s built something rather clever: an AI training app with twenty-plus years of her own experience, her book and her courses sitting in the back end. Not ChatGPT. Not the internet’s greatest hits. Just Sarah, in your pocket.

So I gave it a go. Kenji was resource guarding at meal times, having a go at poor Buster over a bowl that wasn’t even on the floor yet, and had suddenly decided big dogs were the enemy. Two months on, we have a calm dinner routine, a bowl with a penthouse view, a foster brother who eats in the pantry in peace, and a pug who now rolls over and asks his dad for a belly rub.

We talk about what the app actually does, what it costs, the day when it threw out the plan and built a new one because Kenji has a dental procedure, and the car win I completely fluked.

Plus, an exclusive — Sarah reveals the title of her second book, and you Puggies are the very first to hear it. 🐾

Full disclosure, Puggies: I paid for this app myself because I believe in supporting small businesses like mine.

S5 EP06: Livin' the Good Life at Saffron Farm19 Jul 202600:33:58

No studio today. No quiet room. Today, the PUGCAST hits the road.

A working farm. Fifteen rescue dogs. Horses. Alpacas. Goats. One pig. And me, right in the middle of it all.

For the first time ever, The Pug Life Show was recorded in situ at Saffron on the Hill — with founder Kaz, volunteer Krys, and the entire Saffron grumble providing the sound effects.

We talk puppy farm survivors. Forever fosters. Seventeen-year-old barkday pugs. And what it really costs to give these fur-babies and their friends their best life.

Grab a cuppa, snuggle your floof ball, and come to the farm with us. This is The Pug Life Show — farm edition.

S5 EP05: One Small Step for PD, One Giant Leap for Pugkind14 Jun 202600:56:35

🐾 Houston, we have a pug. Six books in and PD the Pug has officially left the atmosphere — and honestly, the universe was NOT prepared.

In his latest adventure ‘Space Cadet! PD the Pug and the Final Frontier’, our favourite misguided but well-meaning black pug has been recruited as the first American dog in space. His mission? Conduct experiments that will benefit all of humankind. What could possibly go wrong?

Pug-Mom Marilee Joyce joins me for her THIRD visit to THE PUG LIFE SHOW to talk space suits, questionable astronaut food, five giant bins of kibble, and the crew of the Wolf Wanderer — none of whom were prepared for pug zoomies in a billion dollar spacecraft.

We also get a sneaky peek at what book seven might hold… and let's just say PD has been recruited for a very different kind of mission. 🕵️

S5 EP04: What If Your Pug Could Pay for Their Own Sitter?10 May 202600:50:44

Now, today I have a truly special guest. Ally is the founder of Paw Share Club — a platform built on something we already know is true in this community: dog lovers take care of each other.

Paw Share Club turns that spirit into a real, fair system. You help a dog parent with a walk or a sit, you earn points. When your Pug needs care, you use those points. And if you don't have a dog yet? Your points are waiting for you when it’s time for another fur-baby — or you can redeem them as gift cards. It's pet care reimagined through the power of community.

S5 EP02: Snorts & Shenanigans: A Day in the Pug Life of Dougie and Floyd 08 Mar 202601:05:29

Today, we are entering the wonderfully chaotic Pug Life of our force-free trainer fur-end Sarah Rutten and her dynamic puggie-duo: Dougie and Floyd.

Dougie is a sweet king who’s been navigating IVDD like an absolute champ… and Floyd is his unhinged pug missile who cannot resist chomping on Dougie’s tail like it’s a limited‑edition snackie.

Sarah spills all the stories — from how she came to being a Pug mum, which was not your typical journey, to her future Pug-family addition which we’re looking forward to meeting mid-year.

S5 EP01: Good Pug‑mentation; Better Health Through Better Supplements08 Feb 202601:06:48

For our first episode of SEASON 5, we’re diving into the world of supplements designed specifically to support Dogs — from calming blends that help ease their anxiety, to gut‑friendly probiotics that keep their sensitive tummies on track, not to mention mobility‑boosting nutrients that help them stay agile despite their unique build or age. Canine supplementation is gaining in popularity, but not all supplements are created equal.

So we’ve invited our fur-ends from Happy Poochie Dog Supplements to talk all thing pug-mentation so you know what to look for to help your Puggie feel balanced, bouncy, and at their best.

S4 EP12: Sophie's Legacy; Vets are Human too03 Aug 202500:57:29

Episode Warning: We do talk about suicide in this episode, which I know can be distressing.

So if you need resources or support go to beyondblue.org or for 24-hour free counselling in Australia, the number for Lifeline is 13 11 14.

Please take care of yourself, and don’t hesitate to ask for help if you need it

Today we’re diving into a heartfelt conversation about Sophie’s Legacy — an Australian Foundation born from love, loss, and a fierce drive to protect the people who care for our fur-babies.

Sophie Putland was a passionate vet who adored animals, but behind the scenes, she faced pressures no one should face. After her tragic passing in 2021, her family started a movement to “Save the people who save our animals” by improving mental health and work environments within the veterinary profession

If you’ve ever had a vet calm your nerves while caring for your fur baby… If your pug has been comforted, stitched up, or saved by a clinic team who went above and beyond… then this episode is for you.

We’ll talk about what’s really going on in the veterinary world, what Sophie’s Legacy is doing to help, and how small acts of kindness — from pawrents like you — can make a big difference.

In this episode we talk about:

  • 03:20 Tell us about yourself and about Sophie’s Legacy
  • 12:20 Tell us about the story behind the We are only Human campaign
  • 22:10 Let’s talk about Future campaigns and what they aim to achieve – Word’s Matter
  • 24:25 Tell us about the Lost campaign and what is has achieved to date
  • 34:00 What can Government do to affect change in the vet industry
  • 35:40 DYK: one vet dies every 12 weeks
  • 38:10 The impact of ‘bill shock’ on people’s behaviour towards Vet Staff
  • 44:40 Tell us about your current fundraising events and campaigns and what it will support
  • 50:05 The world-wide conversation that the “We are only Human” campaign started
  • 51:30 How you can help support the work that Sophie’s Legacy is doing – the Little Things campaign
  • 52:30 Where can we learn more about Sophie’s Legacy and the other things they are doing to improve the vet industry

S4 EP11: Returning my Pugs clothes pissed me off20 Jul 202500:16:23

If you’ve ever yelled at your screen during a failed online shopping spree, wrestled your pugs floof into a too-tight t-shirt or dress, or just wondered why no one makes clothes that actually fit pugs … you’re in the right place.

Today, we’re diving nose-first into the snorty story behind the Pugs n Stripes collection — what pissed me off enough to design my own line of pug-friendly fashion, what we fixed that other brands ignore, and how we turned a whole lotta frustration into one pugtastic solution.

In this episode we talk about:

  • 01:35 What inspired the collection i.e. what pissed me off about shopping for my pugs?
  • 03:12 How did you figure out what needed to be fixed? i.e. how many Pugs did we measure
  • 04:30 How did you design the Pugs n Stripes Collection?
  • 09:30 What were the mandatory things to be included in the design?
  • 11:50 Why does the Pugs n Stripes outfits cost more than the clothes I can get at other shops, such as Kmart or my pet shop?
  • 12:49 What makes you think you’re better than other dog apparel brands?

S4 EP10: What the floof is in this? Bone Appetit Puggies06 Jul 202501:16:23

Today we’re digging into a topic that affects every Puggie, every day: what the floof is in our Puggies food bowl. Because let’s face it — what we feed our pugs has a huge impact on their health, happiness, and those oh-so-charming snorts.

We’re talking about nutrition with a bonafide Animal Nutritionist Jackie Gowland from Functional Canine — not in a preachy or confusing way, but in a real, practical, “what do I actually put in the bowl?” kind of way. Whether you’re serving up kibble, raw, cooked, or somewhere in between, this episode is all about how you can boost the nutritional value of what you’re already using for your Puggie.

We’ll also be sharing real-life examples from two of our resident taste testers: Rosie, who battles reflux, and Kenji, whose tummy can be as sensitive as a Pug caught out in the rain.

You’ll hear how small food tweaks and a better understanding of ingredients can make a big difference for them — and I’m going to try it out and report back to you in a couple months to let you know how they’re going.

So grab a treat (for you or your pug — no judgment here), and let’s dive into how you can feed your pug with a little more understanding, and even more love.

In this episode we talk about:

  • 04:05 Tell us a little bit about yourself and your fur-family
  • 08:50 DID YOU KNOW: Tennis ball glue corrodes canine teeth
  • 11:00 ‘Pet Fooled’ - a movie about kibble and biologically appropriate raw food (BARF)
  • 12:30 Run through the different types of food - dry vs wet vs BARF food
  • 23:00 How is dry food made and what goes into it to make it ‘shelf-stable’
  • 30:50 How to read the nutrition label on canine food – dry, wet or BARF
  • 36:30 DID YOU KNOW: Dry food can spoil and should be stored in the fridge
  • 40:20 DID YOU KNOW: Did you know plastic can leech out of your plastic container into your dry food
  • 42:30 How can you improve the nutritional content of your Pugs bowl when the basis of their meal is kibble
  • 44:30: DID YOU KNOW: You should soak your Pugs kibble in water in the fridge overnight to avoid the kibble fermenting
  • 46:10 What is your Pug’s body telling you when they’re ‘eating grass like a cow’
  • 50:20 DID YOU KNOW: You shouldn’t feed your Pug cooked bones
  • 53:30 DID YOU KNOW: High carbohydrate kibble spikes a Pug’s blood sugar
  • 58:20 REAL LIFE EXAMPLE: What can we do for a Pug who has a sensitive tummy like Kenji
  • 01:05:00 REAL LIFE EXAMPLE: What can we do for a Pug who has reflux like Rosie
  • 01:13:00 How can we find you, learn more and engage your services

S4 EP09: Understanding Canine Anxiety; helping Pugs feel safe again22 Jun 202501:00:08

In this episode, we’re unpacking something that affects more Pugs than we often realise—canine anxiety and reactivity. From sudden reactivity on a walk to the silent worry that plays out behind big, brown eyes, anxiety in our Pugs isn’t always loud — but it is always worth understanding.

We’re so lucky to have our fur-end Sarah Rutten, canine behaviourist and author of the bestselling book The Canine Perspective, coming back on the show to help us break down exactly what anxiety and reactivity mean, how they show up in our Pugs, and most impawtantly, how to spot the early signs — like what’s behind that sudden freeze, or why your Pug growls at a stranger they’ve seen a dozen times before.

As always, Sarah brings both science and compassion to the conversation, helping us understand what’s really going on in our Pugs’ brains and bodies — and what we can do to help them feel safe again. Plus, there might be a Floyd the 5-month-old Pug bark or two in the mix as well!

If you’ve ever worried that your Pug is not coping or behaving strangely then this episode is for you.

In this episode we talk about:

  • 03:15 Tell us about yourself and your fur-family
  • 07:00 Fear imprint periods
  • 08:22 What causes anxiety and are there different types of anxiety?
  • 17:00 Confusing signs of anxiety – how easy it is to mistake your Pugs messages for something else
  • 21:00 The difference between separation anxiety and anxiety
  • 25:20 COVID Dogs – triggered by the hooman world and their Pawrent going back to work
  • 27:00 The impawtance of being sub-threshold and how medication can help achieve that to then enable your Pug to then undertake de-sensitisation work
  • 33:25 What is primary and secondary needs and why it’s impawtant to meet them to reduce the likelihood of anxiety development
  • 38:15 How does reactivity and anxiety interact?
  • 42:00 What should a Pug Pawrent do to help their Pug reduce their anxiety
  • 50:35 How to recognise behaviour escalation
  • 56:00 Where can you find Sarah to learn more or ask for help?

S4 EP08: The Price of Pugfection (Part 2)08 Jun 202500:37:48

Welcome back, Pug Pawrents! If you tuned in to Part 1 of this special two-part series on Pug health and well-being, you’ll know we’ve been diving deep into what it really takes—emotionally, practically, and yes, financially—to keep our squishy-faced companions living their happiest, healthiest lives.

One of my biggest goals with the PUGCAST is to give you the kind of information that’s not only helpful, but honest—whether that’s through heartwarming stories from fellow Pawrents or expert advice from the pros.

And today, we’re back with Part 2 of our conversation with Chelsea the Vet Nurse, who is once again bringing her trademark mix of compassion and clinical smarts. This time, we’re tackling everything from adult Pug care through to their senior and geriatric years—those years filled with extra cuddles, extra naps, and yes… often extra vet visits.

From managing dental care to navigating mobility issues, this episode is all about helping you plan ahead and care with confidence—so you and your Pug can enjoy every single stage of the journey together.

In this episode we talk about:

  • 03:17 The zoomie phase; what you’re in for when your Pug becomes an adult – BOAS, eyes, ears, nose folds
  • 22:00 The slowing down phase; what you’re in for when your Pug becomes a Senior Pug – Senior Pug annual check, blood tests
  • 26:45 The zen phase; what you’re in for when your Pug transitions to Geriatric – arthritis management, surgery restrictions/challenges
  • 35:00 How to find Chelsea the Vet Nurse

Please note: prices quoted during the episode are estimates only and you should always speak to your Vet to get a more accurate quote for your Pug.

S4 EP07: The Price of Pugfection (Part 1)01 Jun 202500:59:59

One of my biggest goals for the PUGCAST is to give Pug Pawrents like you useful, reliable information to help you live your best Pug Life. Sometimes that means sharing real stories from fellow Pawrents, and other times it means bringing in the pros to chat about topics that are super impawtant — but don’t always come up during playgroup catch-ups.

That’s why I’ve been so excited to put together an episode focused entirely on Pug health and well-being — and yes, what it really costs to keep your squishy-faced bestie happy and healthy — from puppyhood all the way to their golden years.

Joining us is Chelsea the Vet Nurse, who brings not only expert knowledge but also a love for Squishy faces. She’s here to discuss all the impawtant health and well-being questions as well as share her wisdom to help you be practically and financially prepared for every snort and sneeze.

Now, there was so much to cover that I’ve split the episode into two parts, so you have plenty of time to take it all in. Part 1 dives into the early stages: from 8 weeks old through to 1 year — aka the puppy and adolescent phase. Part 2, which drops next week, will pick up from age one and cover adult, senior, and geriatric care.

In this episode we talk about:

  • 05:50 Tell us a little bit about yourself Chelsea and your fur-family
  • 09:00 Why is the relationship between the Vet team and the Pug-family so impawtant?
  • 18:40 The cute phase; what you’re in for when your Pug Puppy comes home – initial Vet check/visit, vaccinations, microchipping and more
  • 28:08 The demon phase; what you’re in for when your Pug Puppy hits adolescence – flea etc. treatment, de-sexing, dental care routines and training

S4 EP 04: Furry Tales with PD the Pug 🐾🎙️06 Apr 202500:49:06

Call me a big kid, but I absolutely love children’s books—especially ones about pugs! There’s something magical about diving into a simpler world, where I can easily imagine my own pug as the star of the story.

PD the Pug (with a little help from his mommy Marilee) has been busy turning beloved fairy tales into pawsome furry-tail adventures. You can just picture PD right in the middle of all the fun and what I love most is that while the stories are playful and full of PD charm, they still hold onto timeless messages that feel just as relevant today.

And is why Furry Fairy Tails; PD The Pug's Bedtime Stories is now my favourite PD book

In this episode we talked about:

  • 14:35 What Fairy Tales didn’t make it?
  • 15:50 The appearance of the Secret Fawn Girl Pug
  • 18:30 Did PD need to dress up in costume to get in character for the book?
  • 21:00 PD modelling his Pug Parties outfits
  • 26:50 The appearance of PD’s arch-nemesis Ralph
  • 30:10 How do you get a book from idea to selling, including the development of each illustration?
  • 39:00 Does PD sign his own books at book signings?
  • 40:00 Win a copy of your very own Furry Fairy Tails; PD The Pug's Bedtime Stories
  • 43:05 Where can you buy the book and when is the next book signing in the US?

S4 EP02: Pug Tattoos; an enduring memorial02 Mar 202500:36:42

Have you ever considered memorialising your Pug or Puggies by getting a tattoo? I already have one tattoo from my Navy days, and I always thought that I’d get more but life just got in the way and I’m now thinking that it’s time to change that – the big question is, what do I get?

I have been a Pug-mum to five Pugs in the last 20 years, not counting the Rescue Puggies I have been blessed to foster, and I’m wondering if I will have enough “body canvas” to fit them and future Pugs in if I choose a particular type or size of tattoo.

So, to help me with my decision, I invited Tattoo Artist, Sarah Tavilla to come on the Show and talk about her work and what are the most popular tattoo’s for Pawrents.

In this episode I’ll cover:

  • 02:15 Tell us about yourself and your fur-family
  • 03:15 Tell us about how you came to becoming an animal portrait artist
  • 06:40 A happy Pug Pawrent customer story
  • 08:30 Reason’s why a Pawrent gets a Pet Pawtrait
  • 11:20 What is the favoured tattoo style?
  • 14:40 Describe the process from start to final tattoo on your skin
  • 19:10 Describe how a Pawrent can take the pawfect photo of their pet for their pawtrait
  • 24:30 What is the main reason why people come to you to get a tattoo?
  • 27:00 What is the most interesting tattoo request you’ve ever had?
  • 28:50 What is the most popular portrait style?
  • 32:00 Do you have a favourite tattoo?
  • 33:00 How long does the tattoo take?
  • 34:15 Where can we find you?

S4 EP01: The Purple Poppy09 Feb 202500:52:04

World War and Service Animal Day is a couple of weeks away, on the 24 February to be exact, and ashamedly as a veteran myself I didn’t know about this very impawtant day or what the Purple Poppy was until I meet some of the team at the Dog Lovers Show.

Needless to say, after that enlightening conversation and the purchase of a couple of Purple Poppies for myself and Andrew to wear alongside our Red Poppies I invited the President of the Australian War Animal Memorial Organisation, Nigel Allsop, to come onto the show and talk to me about what it is AWAMO does, what does the Purple Poppy represent, as well as tell me about the first recipient of the Australian and New Zealand Distinctive Animal Distinguished Service Medal to be awarded this year on 24 February at the Australian War Memorial.

In this episode I’ll cover:

  • 02:30 Tell us about yourself and the Australian War Animal Memorial Organisation
  • 03:00 What animals are recognised by AWAMO
  • 06:30 The impawtance of animal mascots and what they did/do for their Units
  • 11:00 The World War and Service Animal Day – 24 Feb
  • 12:00 Policy changes on the return of animals from operational zones
  • 15:00 The countries who commemorate World War and Service Animal Day
  • 16:45 How can you find a local Animal Memorial?
  • 18:40 Purple Poppy Garden at the Victorian Shrine of Remembrance
  • 20:00 Purple Poppy Appeal and what it pays for – veterinary services for retired animals and care packages
  • 25:45 Where can you buy a Purple Poppy?
  • 28:30 The Pozieres Memorial and future International Memorials
  • 33:40 Awards for War and Service Animals – 2025 recipient and how you could qualify for one of two categories
  • 41:00 Blue Cross for Animals Award - The story behind ‘Digger the Bulldog’
  • 44:25 How can you help support AWAMO and their work?

S3 EP11 BONUS: Pug Rescue Christmas wishes15 Dec 202400:25:17

Last week I spoke to Jo from Pug Rescue and Adoption Victoria about the work they do and the Puggie lives they save … not to mention the puggily ever after stories they get a front row seat too when a resuce puggie gets their wish of being adopted by a loving family.

So this week, Jo kindly agreed to pop back on the PUGCAST and talk about the Christmas wishes three rescue puggies have asked SantaPaws to grant, and how you might be able to help SantaPaws grant those wishes

*Please note that the audio does experience a little bit of feedback during the episode that we couldn’t edit out without affecting the conversation :(

Want to skip ahead, this is where to find the topics we discussed in the PUGCAST:

  • 03:10 Cindy’s Christmas wish from SantaPaws
  • 09:30 Mercay’s Christmas wish from SantaPaws
  • 15:45 Abby’s Christmas wish from SantaPaws

S3 EP11: Pug Rescue and Adoption Victoria08 Dec 202400:42:58

Many years ago, when I rescued my first pug Winston a.k.a Fatdog through a local Vet who was doing everything they could to save the life of a little black pug whose only crime was that his family no longer wanted him and thought it was better to ‘put him down’ than find a loving home, did I realise just how naive I was about the world of pugs.

Which is why today’s episode is so important to me – today I’m talking to Joanna from Pug Rescue and Adoption Victoria, a volunteer community foster care network that rehabilitates Pugs, and Frenchies when the need arises, so that they find their fur-ever loving family and to never have to face the possibility of being ‘put down’ because their owners don’t want to help them find a loving home.

Want to skip ahead, this is where to find the topics we discussed in the PUGCAST:

  • 03:00 Tell us about yourself and your fur-family
  • 05:30 When did Pug Rescue and Adoption Victoria start
  • 11:05 Pug Rescue and Adoption Victoria’s Philosophy
  • 15:45 How do you pay for all of the work you do?
  • 20:15 What is the difference between a rescue, a pound and a shelter?
  • 22:30 Why is Pug Rescue and Adoption Victoria a community foster care network?
  • 27:55 Advice on getting a Pug for Christmas
  • 30:45 Why Pug/family matching is so important
  • 34:35 Adoption process
  • 41:40 How can you help Pug Rescue and Adoption Victoria

S3 EP10: Finding your pawfect Pet Professional match24 Nov 202400:43:15

Today I am talking to Sarah, the President of the Pet Professionals Guild Australia, about the services they provide the Fur-pawrent community and why they do it.

Now I know the name sounds very officious and I would understand you thinking that today’s conversation might be a little dry, but I’m telling you it’s neither; it’s fascinating and very informative.

Not only is the PPGA a trusted location to find Pet Professionals who believe in and embody force free, humane training and pet care methods, they are also a huge repository of information about the many baffling things our Pugs/Pets do that needs explaining in a simple easily digestible way that is also fact checked which we know is not always the case with other websites.

Want to skip ahead, this is where to find the topics we discussed in the PUGCAST:

  • 01:58 How did I find the PPGA?
  • 03:39 Meet Sarah the PPGA President and her fur-family
  • 04:40 How did the PPGA start and how does it serve the Pet Community?
  • 09:35 Who gives the Pet Owners webinars and what are their qualifications?
  • 11:17 The ‘Advice for Pet Owners’ resource
  • 16:50 Can you contact an expert for advice?
  • 17:30 The Pet Professional Directory – Nation-wide coverage – what is included and what isn’t?
  • 20:20 The Pet Owner Membership benefits
  • 21:40 PPGA Sponsorship Programs – anyone interested in becoming a Pet Professional can apply for a scholarship
  • 27:30 Segue - There is such a thing as ‘cat training’?
  • 30:05 How often does the PPGA update its website listings?
  • 32:20 Who writes the website articles and are they ‘peer reviewed’?
  • 34:30 Events that you can meet PPGA staff in person
  • 53:00 Can anyone join the PPGA?
  • 41:48 Where can we find the PPGA?

S3 EP 09: PD The Pug10 Nov 202401:03:50

There is a saying that goes “everyone has a book inside of them” and who knew that included Pugs!

Now it’s not often I get to meet a multi-talented Pug such as PD the Pug; pug-author and all round cute snaggle-toothed boy pug, but thankfully he agreed to come on the Show to not only talk about himself and his pawsomeness (or should I say, have his Pug-mom Marilee talk about his pawsomeness), but to also talk about his books – the fourth having been released this year and my personal favourite – ‘A Star is Born!; PD the Pug on the Silver Screen.

In this episode I’ll cover:

  • 02:42 What inspired you to become a Pug-Pawrent?
  • 07:08 Tell us a little bit about yourself and PD; how did you meet??
  • 24:54 Describe PD’s Pawsonality and share the naughty traits that you love the most and might not be in his books
  • 35:07 Tell us all about PD’s writing career and his four books – what inspired him to become an author noting the many careers he tried in Book 3 ‘Working like a …Dog’.
  • 43:50 Are we ever going to meet PD’s ‘secret fawn girl pug crush’?
  • 49:26 We really want to know about PD’s ‘under the stairs house’ and his ‘kitchen bench nook’
  • 55:34 Tell us about PD’s recent collaboration with the Rainbow Bridge Hospice
  • 57:14 How can our listeners find PD the Pug and his books?

S3 EP08: Essential Oils for Pugs27 Oct 202400:40:25

Our episode today is one that I have wanted to do for some time now because I know so little about essential oils, but I love having them in my life. I love burning scented candles in my office and my home, I love a relaxing bath with some relaxing salts and an occasional visit from Rosie and Kenji checking up on me to make sure I haven’t forgotten them or dinner time, and I love running my diffuser when I don’t have a candle.

The challenge is that I know enough about essential oils to know that some are not good for our furry fur-ends, but not enough to know what is good, what is bad and what combination is best for me and the Puggies … so you can see why I asked Libby to join me on the Show to dispel the myth, provide the fact and even give me a little advice about that little thing called anxiety which we all know Kenji suffers from.

In this episode I’ll cover:

    • 03:00 Tell us a little bit about yourself and your fur-family
    • 05:02 What inspired you to learn more about essential oils specifically for pets?
    • 05:57 What are the “don’t” with essential oils and why?
    • 13:59 Talk us through the oils that are safe for Pugs and what can they do for them?
    • 22:48 Explain the different methods of application – diffuser, petting, ear tipping or paws.
    • 33:24 Listener offer
    • 36:22 How can our listeners find you?

Libby has provided us with a special link that you can use to purchase oils for your Pug at a reduced price and get access to ongoing support and education, YEAH! So check it out https://doterra.me/0Z-qLs and let us know how you go.

S3 EP07: What would a Puggie need with a treadmill?13 Oct 202400:24:40

I would understand if you thought to yourself on seeing the title of this PUGCAST, what would a Puggie need with a treadmill especially when I titled it “What would a Puggie need with a treadmill?”. However, when I came across this treadmill earlier this year, it made me think of my first Pug Louis, aka Fatdog and how he could have benefitted from a treadmill like this when we needed to get his weight down.

In this episode I’ll cover:

  • 01:30 What would a Puggie need with a treadmill?
  • 03:39 Tell us a little bit about yourself and
  • 04:58 What was the inspiration?
  • 06:07 Describe the treadmills and why it compliments a puggie walk

S3 EP06: My Experience with Emotional Learning22 Sep 202400:26:50

Our last episode was an interview with Dr Dennis Wormald who wrote a book called ‘A Dedication to Difficult Dogs; A heartwarming tale shedding light on Canine Mental Health’ and if you haven’t listened to it yet, I highly recommend you do before listening to this episode.

Why you might ask? well in this episode I’m going to share with you how I have fared so far, using the knowledge I have gained from reading the book and talking to Dr Dennis on the PUGCAST, so you get a first-hand account of putting some of the lessons into practice and seeing/hearing my results so far so you can judge for yourself if you’d like to purchase the book and put it into practice yourself.

In this episode I’ll cover:

  • 03:05 What I loved about the book
  • 05:35 What happened during a 'Big Dog' encounter
  • 10:10 What I did differently after the 'Big Dog' encounter noting I had read the book

S3 EP05: Shedding Light on Canine Mental Health08 Sep 202401:05:58

It’s not often that I gush about a book of any kind, so when I do come across a book that I not only enjoy reading but I also get a lot out of when it comes to understanding my Puggies I gush to everyone, and then I ask for the author to come onto the Pug Life Show so we can talk about it in detail.

Dr Dennis Wormald’s book ‘A Dedication to Difficult Dogs; A heartwarming tale shedding light on Canine Mental Health’ is a must read for every Pug-Pawrent out there. It doesn’t matter if your Pug has anxiety or not, this book helped me understand what might be going on in Rosie and Kenji’s heads (not to mention the rescue Puggies I care for) on a daily basis and thanks to that, I feel like I’m a better Pug-mom for it.

In this episode I’ll cover:

  • 07:40 Tell us a little bit about yourself and your fur-family.
  • 09:20 What inspired you to focus on dog mental health and then write a book about it?
  • 16:30 Tell me about anthropomorphism - explain what it is and how it affects our relationship with our Pugs.
  • 29:00 Why is it so important for us as Pug Pawrents to learn how to interpret our Pugs behaviour, and where do we get it wrong?
  • 44:40 Talk about a Pugs incredible sense of smell
  • 52:20 Let’s talk about emotional learning vs operant learning/punishment – why is one better than the other and why is it so important to learn the difference
  • 62:50 How can our listeners find you?

S3 EP04: The Kindest Goodbye25 Aug 202400:45:44

This conversation was one that I wished I had had 18-months ago when Charles passed – to be able to have Charles at home with us as we said goodbye to him wouldn’t have made the decision any easier, but it would have made the process so much more private.

I’m not saying that the process at a Vet isn’t compassionate or thoughtful, but not having to walk out into a waiting room full of heathy dogs with my cheeks still wet from crying to pay the final bill is a much better way to start the grieving process.

I know that when the time comes, I will be giving Rosie and Kenji the opportunity to say goodbye from the comfort of our home, and I think you will be considering it too once you listen to what Dr Tom Milton from ‘The Kindest Goodbye’ shares in the episode.

In this episode I’ll cover:

  • 03:05 Tell us a little bit about yourself and your fur-family
  • 04:40 What inspired you to start The Kindest Goodbye?
  • 12:00 The process
  • 16:20 Without sounding crass, what is the best part about The Kindest Goodbye?
  • 20:38 What is the difference between your service and going to a Vet/funeral home?
  • 27:20 Can you talk us through your ‘Quality of Life’ scale
  • 38:10 Where are you located
  • 38:50 What is next for your business that our listeners need to be aware of, if relevant?
  • 41:00 How can our listeners find you?

S3 EP03: What's in a (Puggies) Name11 Aug 202400:19:09

Have you ever wondered what your Puggie’s name says about you or your Puggie Pawrent friend? Well let me tell you, I asked myself that question after my conversation with Gurvinder about Espresso and Martini, two fabulous Puggie names, and I ended up down a rabbit hole reading a multitude of articles (yes I’m not the only one who has thought about this apparently) and I thought I would share some of the more interesting things I discovered in my reading journey about what is in a Puggies name.

In this episode I’ll cover:

  • 05:05 A little bit of history of pet names
  • 06:40 An interesting French naming convention for dogs
  • 08:40 What does your Pets name say about you
  • 17:15 Popular pet names of 2024

It’s our first Pug interview for 2024 and it’s a PAWSOME one; how could you not love it when we’re talking to pugs with names that said in quick succession mean a tasty ‘adults only’ drink …. Espresso Martini! I can only imagine how much fun Gurvinder, their Pug-mom has calling their names when they’re running a amok at WhittlePug.

S3 EP01: Playing Indoors at Bark Park07 Jul 202400:40:24

So, recently I had the pleasure of discovering Melbourne’s first and only Indoor Dog Park with Rosie, Kenji and their Foster Sister and Brother Roxie and Wally, and boy did we have a great time! I’m not sure I saw their bodies move for the rest of the day when we finally got home they were so PUGGERED but it is a testament to the work that Charnelle has put into creating this amazing space for our fur-children.

So if you’re looking for a safe alternative to an outdoor dog park that has separate play areas for small and large dogs … not to mention the fact that you don’t have to worry about rain, wind or hail, then I think today’s PUGCAST might be just what you’re looking for this winter.

In this episode I’ll cover:

  • 02:22 Tell us about yourself and your fur-family
  • 07:30 12-year-old Dog-mum

S3 EP00: What’s in store for 202407 Jul 202400:05:44

So, at the end of 2023, Rosie, Kenji and I had big plans for 2024 including a pugtastic season for the Pug Life Show … then the Pug Life happened, and we find ourselves curly tail deep in family and puggie emergencies (everyone is ok now so breathe a sigh of relief!) and we had started to work on our first Pug-specific clothing line and we all of a sudden found ourselves with no time left to keep in touch regularly on our socials or work on the PUGCAST – horrific I know!

I promise you that we slowly chipped away at our to do list and we found some amazing Hooman’s and Puggies to invite onto the Show this year, and although the year is half over, we’re going to deliver 12 episodes as planned at the end of 2023. That means you get a new PUGCAST in your inbox every two weeks! That’s right, we’re releasing a new PUGCAST episode on the 2nd and 4th Sunday of the month and we know that you’re going to love the line-up we have panned.

If you liked the episode, or if you think it'll be useful for someone else, please leave a review on your PODCAST streaming service.

Meet Pug-mom Rachel and her beautiful little girl Agatha, whom you’ll be able to hear snoozing, or should I say snoring, throughout the episode in that ever-so-cute little style that only a Puggie can.

This is a wonderful joyful episode about Agatha, how they met and what their Pug Life has been like – especially the anecdote about their bonding within minutes of meeting which I am sure you can relate to. And then there is the question that Rachel had for me … What is wrong with my Pug”?

S2 EP08: Did I do the right thing?13 Aug 202300:17:53

I don’t think I’ve ever met a Pug-Pawrent who hasn’t asked this of themselves or discussed it with another Pug-Pawrent when it comes to making a decision about their Pugs well-being.

You know what I’m talking about, Am I feeding them the right food? Am I making the right decision about a veterinary procedure? Am I really capable of caring for a Pug? And the dreaded, Am I making the right decision when it comes to making ‘that’ decision?

In this episode, I’m going to share with you some of my “Am I doing the right thing” moments and what I have learned from them so far.

S2 EP06: How to deal with separation anxiety11 Jun 202300:14:37

In this episode I’m talking about Puggie separation anxiety. Apparently, research has found that ‘one in every 4-6 dogs’ have separation anxiety and that it is ‘more common in older dogs’.

What’s more, it can present in different forms and at different times. I’ve experienced Pug-to-Pug separation anxiety between Winston and Charles, and Pug-to-Hooman separation anxiety with Louis and now Kenji, and surprise surprise, no two Pugs are the same when it comes to displaying their anxiety!

But the great thing is, there are ways to reduce the impact so that they can live their Pug life to the fullest and we’ll cover all the options in this episode.

In this episode I’ll cover:

• 01:15 1 in every 4-6 dogs have separation anxiety

• 02:35 What is Puggie separation anxiety

• 03:40 Steps to help your Puggie overcome separation anxiety

• 07:10 When to get professional help

• 08:35 My experiences with my Puggies

S2 EP05: We’re all going on a Fur-family Holiday14 May 202300:18:04

In this episode I’m talking about fur-family holidays. We try to go on at least one every year, but I realised just before Easter that we hadn’t been on a proper fur-family holiday for 5 years! So, we decided to book an Airbnb place near the sea at the last minute and enjoy the four days off.

But with so much time in between holiday’s I realised just how out of practice I was in making sure we packed everything Rosie and Kenji would need for the trip. So I thought I’d share my packing list with you so you don’t forget anything on your trip and find yourself searching for a pet store in an unfamiliar town praying they stock your Puggies favourite treaties … yes that was us this time round!

In this episode I’ll cover:

• 02:15 – It’s been 5 years!

• 04:00 – The ‘Belt of Power’

• 05:15 – The minimum we pack for a fur-family holiday

• 12:45 – What we’d add for a beach holiday

• 14:10 – What we’d add for a camping holiday

Please note: there’s some Puggie snoring accompanying this episode; it’s not that its boring, they’re still recovering from their amazing holiday!

S2 EP04: Barkday Pawtying like only a Pug can16 Apr 202300:15:46

In this Episode I'm talking about Barkday Pawties, the Puggie version of Birthday Parties. I LOVE throwing my Puggies a Barkday Pawty to celebrate them, make them feel special and have a great day with their Grumble … yes there is a lot of treaties, a lot of snot and a lot of over-excited Puggies of all ages and we’re all Puggered by the end but what a great way to spend a day with my Puggies and Pug Pawrent friends!

I’ll share with you the many different types of Barkday Pawties I have thrown for my Puggies over the last 20 years and hopefully something will inspire your next Barkday celebration.

In this episode I’ll cover:

• 01:18 – Barkday Season

• 03:07 – Louis’s Barkday Pawty’s at home

• 04:10 – Winston and Charles’s Dog Barkery shopping

• 07:35 – Pawty Planning for Charles 13th and Rosie’s 9th Barkday Pawties

• 10:09 – Kenji and his beloved Miss Drew’s Barkery and Café Pawty

• 12:27 – Inspiration for your next Barkday Pawty
