What happens when the strategies we use to protect ourselves begin to limit our lives?
In this episode of The Practice of Therapy, Gordon Brewer welcomes Dr. Terry Lynch, a medical doctor and psychotherapist based in Ireland, for a conversation about depression, emotional wounds, and the ways coping can become a cage.
Terry shares his trauma-informed perspective on depression and explores how people-pleasing, withdrawal, and avoiding risks can serve as self-protection while carrying long-term costs. He discusses the role of the inner critic and how therapists can help clients rebuild their sense of self, develop a more compassionate inner dialogue, and recognize opportunities for choice.
Through examples from his clinical work, Terry illustrates how small, manageable steps can help clients expand their comfort zones. This conversation invites therapists to look beyond diagnostic labels and stay curious about the experiences and protective patterns shaping their clients' lives.
