Classical computing cannot simulate more than about 50 qubits. What does it mean that we now have a quantum computer with, gasp, 100 qubits? ColdQuanta found a way to beat giants like IBM to this amazing feat, and they did it with a new approach that may lead to smaller quantum computing systems that one day could be rack-mountable. Like a reverse microwave, the new Hilbert computer uses lasers to slow down particle vibrations to make them “cold” and able to act as qubits. Hilbert even touts low errors and high connectivity. Quantum computing needs low-overhead error correction to truly scale. Building thousands of qubits to end up with a couple of useful logical ones feels like a bad strategy. Quantum computing will never be the same again. Join host Konstantinos Karagiannis for a special onsite interview at Microsoft Azure Quantum labs, where he was invited to see the launch of Majorana 1, the world’s first quantum processor powered by topological qubits. On the day this episode is posted, Nature will release a paper validating how Microsoft was able to create a topoconductor, or new material stack of indium arsenide and aluminum, built literally one atom at a time, to bring quantum particles called Majoranas into usable form. The resulting topological qubits have a unique shape called a tetron and can be accurately measured with lower errors than other modalities. Starting with a 4x2 grid of qubits, this same tiny device will hold 1 million qubits in a few years because of its unique system of wiring and measurement. This interview with Chetan Nayak from Microsoft happened a few feet away from a working Majorana 1 system.

For the first time, Shor’s Algorithm is running on logical qubits! The team at Infleqtion used their Sqale neutral atom processor to accomplish the feat. While the setup only uses six logical qubits, and we’re still in the range of factoring 15 or 21, this is both a proof of concept and a proof of the need for post-quantum cryptography (PQC). We discuss the aggressive 2.5:1 physical-to-logical ratio of Sqale, which could lead to hundreds of logical qubits by 2028. Error correction typically involves a lot of physical qubits and using them to create one logical qubit. Ratios vary by modality and approach, so getting a single fault-tolerant qubit may take seven to a thousand physical ones. What if there was a way to correct most of the errors that appear on each qubit instead? Scaling up from there would certainly be much easier, getting us to machines that can reliably solve business problems. When Richard Feynman proposed the idea of a quantum simulator or computer in 1981, he was frustrated by the limitations of classical systems. He logically suggested that if we live in a quantum world, we need a quantum device to simulate all the interactions of particles that make up reality.
