My name is Laura Elizabeth Mullen and on this podcast I interview members of the cast iron art community in order to inspire, educate and spread ideas about iron casting and cast iron art. Our guest on today’s episode is Gabe Akagawa. Gabe is a multi media artist based in Chicago Illinois. On top of that Gabe is the person who developed and runs the Foundry Tree Database. Now if you don’t know already, the Foundry Tree is an online resource that documents practitioners within the cast iron community. Under the supervision of Julius Schmidt, Steve Daly built a small cupola in the mid sixties. He took the 8 ½ inch cupola with him when he graduated as an MFA from Cranbrook Academy of Art. He used it, and the knowledge of iron casting that he learned from Schmidt to begin spreading the technique of self-cast iron for the purpose of art making outside of Cranbrook. Daly is one of the main early contributors to the spread of the cast iron art movement in America.
