249: Production Workflow of My New Show, Fractal Bitcoin (video and audio)15 May 202400:15:53

In this episode I detail my production workflow for my new show, Fractal Bitcoin. I publish daily episodes both as video and audio-only. Fractal Bitcoin covers Bitcoin news and other Bitcoin topics.

Overview my current audio equipment setup:

Overview my production workflow:

  • Gather posts and news stories from Nostr, X and a few other industry websites. (Takes me around 2 hours)
  • Order all the posts and stories for the shownotes.
  • Create a title for the episode.
  • Create a 16x9 thumbnail for the episode using ChatGPT which uses DALL-E 3 to generate images. — https://chatgpt.com/
  • Restart my computer.
  • Arrange all the browser tabs.
  • Open OBS Studio and do a short test recording. (My audio levels, video camera and lighting stay the same everyday)
  • I record my episode as if it’s LIVE to a .mov file at 1920x1080, 60 frames per second, video bitrate at 16,000 kbps, and audio bitrate at 2304 kbps. (My average video is about 15 min. long, which ends up being around a 2Gb .mov file)

First I produce the video:

  • Process the audio in iZotope RX:
    • Make it a mono file, usually
    • Silence any lipsmacks and noises (can’t delete anything because the audio has to line up with the video)
    • Level it to -16.5 LUFS mono or -13.5 LUFS stereo (for video)
    • Save it as a 32-bit .wav file
  • Bring the raw video and processed audio into Screenflow. Usually I don’t need to make any edits but sometimes I do. — https://www.telestream.net/screenflow/overview.htm
  • Render the video as a .mp4 file at 1920x1080, 60 frames per second, video bitrate at 16,000 kbps, and audio bitrate at 256 kbps and audio sample rate at 48kHz. (The resulting file size ends up being the same as the raw video recording — about 2Gb for a 15 min. long file)
  • Upload and publish the video to YouTube, Rumble, Bitchute, TikTok, and Flare.pub (a Nostr platform to which I upload a smaller 960x540 version)
  • I promote my YouTube video on Nostr, X, Instagram, LinkedIn, and a few other platforms.
  • I also post the Youtube link to my Locals community that I’m growing.
  • I also use Opus Clip to create 5 shorts from each of my daily videos. I post all 5 to YouTube Shorts, Instagram Reels, TikTok and LinkedIn. — https://www.opus.pro/

Then I produce the audio-only podcast:

  • I edit the audio a bit:
    • Remove any isolated umms and flubs
    • Reduce the length of any dead air, if there is any, in order to speed up the pacing slightly.
  • Level it to -18.5 LUFS mono or -15.5 LUFS stereo (for audio-only podcast)
  • Save it as a 32-bit .wav file as well as an .mp3 file (96 kbps mono or 192 kbps stereo).
  • Tag the .mp3 using ID3 Editor. — http://www.pa-software.com/id3editor/
  • Upload .mp3 to Captivate along with shownotes and publish. — https://www.captivate.fm/
  • For my website I use Podpage which automatically brings in each podcast episode from Captivate as a blog post. I’m able to quickly optimize the post, add the YouTube video, and add images, etc. — https://www.podpage.com/

239: Mistakes I’ve Made Producing Podcasts21 Sep 202200:19:57

Today I’m going to discuss some mistakes I’ve made producing podcasts.

Microphone: In this episode I’m using my Electro-Voice RE320 microphone plugged into my Neve Portico II channel strip (using compression, EQ and a bit of saturation). The same microphone you see in my daily short videos here.

I mention a recent hiking experience I had where a guy who saw my shirt (which says Ask Me About My Podcast) and asked, "What's your podcast?" And then immediately added, "JUST KIDDING!” We all laughed and he didn’t ask again so I didn’t mention my podcast at all. HA

Mistakes I’ve Made Producing Podcasts:

  • I published one of my client’s episodes with 30 seconds of silence at the beginning. The client alerted me and I fixed it immediately.
  • During an online recording session, after a participant dropped off and then returned, I forgot to press record again in Squadcast, but of course I was recording a local backup which I ended up using (though it was a bit of a pain because all participants were mixed together in the backup recording). NOTE: Squadcast fixed this issue a long time ago.
  • On an in-person recording session I forgot to hit record and realized it after about 5 minutes so we had to start the episode over again and sort of feign authentic enthusiasm when redoing the intro.
  • I've mixed audio on my monitor speakers while mistakenly using the calibration profile for my headphones.
  • Untold inaccuracies using processors too aggressively, or not aggressively enough — Compression, de-noise, de-plosive, EQ, etc.

PES 151: Andrew Chadwick10 Oct 201901:01:12

My guest is Andrew Chadwick, long time radio engineer, and audio mixer and editor for Pod Save America!

We discussed so much - here's a few things we covered:

  • Extreme time pressure when producing audio
  • Receive files, make edits, mix and assemble the show
  • Submitting audio for QC
  • Tight turnaround: Start recording at 1 PM Central, finish recording around 2:30 PM Central, post at 4 PM Central
  • Manually ducking everyone when they’re not speaking
  • Adobe Audition
  • Different sessions for each segment of the show
  • Limiting
  • Audition’s Tube compressor plugin
  • Mix to 32 bit 44.1kHz WAV file, then create the MP3
  • AM Radio experience

Thanks for being a great guest, Andrew!

Thanks to Focusrite for sponsoring this episode! If you haven't checked out the new Focusrite Scarlett 3rd Gen. series of interfaces yet, you can see them here.

NOTE: I did not do any post processing on any of the audio in this episode, in order for you to hear the difference between the two microphones as well as the Scarlett 2i2 3rd gen.

Sounds a lot different from a normal episode, right? That's because of the lack of compression and EQ, etc.

238: How To Handle Loudness Properly in All Stages of Your Podcast Production Workflow08 Sep 202200:26:56

NOTE: In this episode I’m using a Sennheiser e835 microphone into my Portico 2 channel strip and using these plugins in post: KIT BB N105, Shadow Hills Class A Mastering Compressor, Saturn 2, and Aquamarine 4.

Here's the summary of what I discuss on How To Handle Loudness Properly in All Stages of Your Podcast Production Workflow:

  • Record all raw tracks at a healthy level (not too low or too hot)
  • Set all raw tracks to the same LUFS before bringing them into your DAW. (I do this at the end of my cleanup phase after I remove background noise, plosives, hums, and other blemishes)
  • Use Compression and/or MaxxVolume/Vocal Rider to compress/tame the loud parts as well as boost the lower volume parts. (NOTE: This step will effectively amplify any background noise, so be sure to absolutely minimize the background noise before pressing record!)
  • Adjust the overall level of each participant so they all sound good compared to each other. (as part of your mixing phase, where you can also use other processing like EQ, saturation, etc.)
  • After rendering the final episode audio, process this file so it adheres to the “unofficial” loudness standards of podcasting: -19 LUFS for mono episodes, or -16 LUFS for stereo episodes.

Other Notes:

  • If you ever have questions please reach out!
  • You can sign up to receive Daily Goody’s in your email a few times per week or a weekly roundup. Sign up here.

PES 141: Travis Vengroff01 Aug 201901:06:53

My guest is Travis Vengroff - producer, editor, and sound designer of audio dramas including Liberty, The White Vault, Vast Horizon, and the creator of Dark Dice - all under the umbrella of Fool and Scholar Productions

And they were just announced as an honoree for the Webby Awards for Music and Sound Design in Podcasting!

Some of what we discussed:

  • Power regulator
  • Focusrite 6i6
  • Rode NTK mic, tube, external power supply
  • Asus computer
  • MixCraft software to record.
  • Reaper for mixing
  • H4n
  • H5n
  • Mixcraft to edit

And here's a briefly overview of Travis' post-production workflow:

  1. All files are compiled onto a timeline in Mixcraft and EQ them to ensure a uniform quality.
  2. I'll do a dialogue cut using the multiple takes given to me (each actor records remotely) with a basic ambient layer or two for context.
  3. From there I'll make a second pass, adding ambiance and sound effects while fine-tuning all vocal tracks.  If it's a stock audio track I've already recorded it goes in now. If it's something that needs to be recorded, I'll mark the timestamp. Processing takes place while I edit each sound.
  4. I make an additional pass to record general sound effects, and a few more passes while recording motion sounds, footsteps, and similar noises that people unconsciously make.
  5. The writer listens to the project for the first time and I make changes based on their suggestions.
  6. I'll do a final pass making fine tuning, then export everything as STEM tracks with pre-labels for SFX, CHAR (character), and AMB (ambiance), before zipping and sending to the mixing engineer. S/he will make a few passes, I'll get them a revision list, and we repeat the process until we get the final mastered track. The writer hears the second to last mix and offers feedback.

Thanks for sharing so much great info, Travis!

237: Max Flight and Your Mid-summer Podcast Re-evaluation09 Aug 202201:21:56

Returning all-star guest Max Flight helps me cover 17 ways to re-evaluate your podcast this summer, and we also discuss Max's latest podcast production workflow, equipment, software and more.

Max has been producing aviation podcasts since 2008:

We discuss these 17 ways in which you can re-evaluate and improve your show this summer:

  1. Update your goals
  2. Change the format
  3. Start using chapters
  4. Personal focus on eliminating verbal crutches. (A short duration of intense focus will provide years of good results)
  5. Change and/or add equipment
  6. Sell old equipment
  7. Treat yourself to that mic you've always wanted
  8. Sound absorption and diffusers
  9. Add a new segment
  10. Cover new yet pertinent subject matter topics
  11. Publish in video format as well
  12. Publish better shownotes
  13. Revamp your marketing
  14. Evaluate the shows overall effectiveness
  15. Hire a VA
  16. Bring on a cohost
  17. Decide to end your show???
  18. Perhaps decide you want to become a professional podcast engineer/producer and earn a great living producing podcasts for clients - from home?!

And here's a lot more detail on Max's production:

Big changes since PES 20 and PES 39 mostly involve a simplification of the signal path:

  • Skype and cohost multi-enders replaced by Riverside.fm
  • Behringer mixer (still going strong since 2009!) replaced with MixPre
  • The MixPre handles all mic pre-amplification
  • Sound clips and pre-recorded segments played through Riverside, replacing an iOS soundboard
  • Backup recording is handled by the MixPre

Current equipment:

  • Sound Devices MixPre-6
  • Also use a MixPre-3 Gen 2 for field recordings
  • Zoom H5 for field recordings, too
  • Heil PR40
  • Sennheiser MD46 interview mic
  • Dell XPS 16 and MacBook Pro 15-inch, 2018 model, 2.9GHz i9 32 GB laptops
  • Audio Technica ATH-M50x headphones
  • Yamaha HS5 monitors

Software:

  • Riverside.fm (was Skype then Squadcast)
  • Hindenburg Journalist Pro
  • Audacity (yep!)
  • iZotope RX 8 Advanced
  • ID3 Editor for tagging

Services:

  • Media hosting: Blubrry and Libsyn
  • Website hosting: Bluehost and SiteGround

Notes from Max:

  • I'm retired and traveling more which makes weekly podcast production a bit more difficult.
  • Biggest current problem: At the home studio I mix/master with my Yamaha monitors, which I love. I can't master properly with the Audio Technica headphones when traveling.

Other Notes:

  • If you ever have questions please reach out!
  • You can sign up to receive Daily Goody’s in your email a few times per week or a weekly roundup. Sign up here.
  • The start date for the next PES semester is Sep. 13, 2022! (fyi, the course is delivered once per quarter)
  • If you’d like to share this show with any of your podcaster friends, feel free to send them a message saying, “Btw, here’s a show about podcast audio production you may find helpful” with this link: https://podcastengineeringschool.com/subscribe/)

Let me know if you have any questions or need any help with anything,
~Chris

PES 131: Shawn Kitchen23 May 201901:12:59

My guest is Shawn Kitchen - host of the Northwest Corner Podcast. He lives in Spartanburg, SC, was formerly trained in radio and tv, and is currently records his show using a Live format to reduce post-production time.

We discussed his production workflow and equipment in detail, including:

  • Using a Kindle tablet to play sound FX
  • Riding faders Live
  • Mixer has one knob compression on each channel
  • Mic technique
  • Using subgroups: Voices to one group, music to another group, then record each group separately on his Zoom H6
  • Chris’s Compression Dynamics plugin within Audacity
  • Noise reduction in Audacity by creating and using a custom noise profile (he removes 14 or 15 dB of noise!)
  • Record everything 24 bit / 44.1 kHz
  • Soundcloud
  • Behringer X2222USB analog mixer
  • Behringer UMC404HD interface
  • Tascam DR-40 field recorder
  • Zoom H6 field recorder
  • Behringer XM8500 dynamic mics
  • MXL FR-355K lavalier mics
  • Audacity
  • Hindenburg
  • Soundpad app for Android on Kindle Fire 8HD tablet
  • iRig 2 instrument interface
  • Behringer headphone distribution amp and headphones (for up to 8 people)
  • All post-production done in-house on Dell desktop with Core I5 processor using primarily Audacity, but have been using Hindenburg more frequently in recent time. Pre-recorded music tracks (except show theme) are separated into new tracks. All vocals are run through a combination of soft limiter, compression, and then amplification to -1.0 dB. Noise reduction is done at the *end* of all other processing, using a 5-second segment of silence with all mics open at the beginning of each recording session. I've found that applying noise reduction at the end yields us with the clearest results.

Thanks for being a great guest, Shawn!

PES 121: Brodie Brazil of NBC Sports California14 Mar 201901:10:29

Brodie Brazil is here! He's a TV broadcaster and hosts the Oakland A's & San Jose Sharks Pre/Postgame Live on NBC Sports California. Check out his YouTube. He has won 13 Regional Emmy Awards and nominated for 32!

Also check out his podcast, Brodie Brazil.

We discussed a ton, including:

  • Packing blankets and rug in his home studio
  • Mics: TLM103, SM7B through Fethead, RE320's, MD46's, HMD26
  • Mixer: Soundcraft 12 MTK
  • Channel strips: dbx 286's
  • Remote interface: UMC202HD
  • Recorders: Zoom H5 & H6
  • Computer: MacBook Pro running Audition (old version!)
  • Headphones: Beyerdynamic DT-770's
  • On-location: Zoom H6 w/ two RE320’s
  • TV mic: Sennheiser MD-46
  • Because I do a lot of live streaming - need most of my processing (comp, EQ, de-essing, gate) baked in. So I have that for both the Neumann and Shure mics. I do add a little post-processing for podcasts and YouTube videos with just some light compression... normalization, then clip gain matching to -16 lufs.
  • Everything exported to .wav for videos and editing. eventually .mp3 for podcasting to... Soundcloud(!) I know, but it works best for me (I can explain).

Thanks for hanging with us, Brodie!

PES 120: MP3 vs. AAC (.m4a) with Allan Tépper28 Feb 201901:07:00

Great discussion with Allan Tépper. He is the host of Beyond Podcasting, as well as a  a Pro Audio/Video specialist, tech journalist, broadcaster, author and consultant. (and my previous guest on episode 74)

*DISCLAIMER: We are not advocating for anyone to switch from MP3 to AAC (.m4a). If you're contemplating it, please do more research and decide for yourself.

We discussed many aspects of MP3 vs. AAC (.m4a):

Advanced Audio Coding is designed to be the successor of the MPEG-1 Audio Layer 3, known as MP3 format, which was specified by ISO/IEC in 11172-3 (MPEG-1 Audio) and 13818-3 (MPEG-2 Audio)

The widespread reluctance to even THINK about publishing podcast episodes in any other format than MP3.

.m4a is the most common extension, but not the only extension, used for AAC.

Sound quality: AAC sounds better than MP3 especially when encoded at lower bitrates. This means that your final episode file can be smaller in size and still sound as good or better than MP3.

Chris's experience: "When I convert my .WAV file to MP3 using iZotope RX 7, the resultant MP3 is 0.4 LUFS lower in volume than the original .WAV. Whereas when I convert to .m4a the resulting LUFS level of the .m4a is exactly the same as the original .WAV file. Interesting..."

Compatibility with ad insertion platforms: Rob Greenlee says, "Hey Chris, Most of the platforms that utilized dynamic ad insertion technology, oftentimes require MP3 files only."

TPES episodes that published in .m4a:

ID3 Tags: Bryan Entzminger says, "I did a test with an episode. I didn’t like that Libsyn didn’t pull the id3 info from the file (because it’s not an MP3) but that’s not a really big deal."

A few popular shows that use .m4a files:

  • Podnews (James Cridland’s show, @ 44.1 kHz so far)
  • 60 Sec Torah Byte (Zalman Levin / Podbean 44.1 kHz so far)
  • Morning Mantra (Coach MK / Anchor)
  • BeyondPodcasting (Allan Tépper’s show, @ 48 kHz)
  • Podcast Engineering Show (Barry and Chris’s show, @ 48 kHz)

Technical analysis of top podcasts - James Cridland’s post looking at bitrate. LUFS, mono/stereo, etc.:
https://podnews.net/article/podcast-analysis?utm_source=podnews.net&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=podnews.net:2019-01-17

AAC's improvements over MP3 (from Wikipedia)

Blind tests in the late 1990s showed that AAC demonstrated greater sound quality and transparency than MP3 for files coded at the same bit rate.

Improvements include:

  • more sample rates (from 8 to 96 kHz) than MP3 (16 to 48 kHz)
  • up to 48 channels (MP3 supports up to two channels in MPEG-1 mode and up to 5.1 channels in MPEG-2 mode)
  • higher coding efficiency for stationary signals (AAC uses a blocksize of 1024 or 960 samples, allowing more efficient coding than MP3's 576 sample blocks)
  • higher coding accuracy for transient signals (AAC uses a blocksize of 128 or 120 samples, allowing more accurate coding than MP3's 192 sample blocks)
  • much better handling of audio frequencies above 16 kHz
  • more flexible joint stereo (different methods can be used in different frequency ranges)
Encoding:

*NOTE: NONE of these lists is exhaustive. We did not investigate every single program in existence ;)

Programs that can encode .m4a files:

  • iTunes
  • Fission (Mac only. Also can tag and create chapters. Allan Tépper’s favorite 1-track audio editor for Mac. Unique because it can also edit lossy formats without generation loss. Can’t save tag data but can copy and paste tag data. Chris was confused because Fission’s tag data doesn’t have a ‘Copyright’ field.)
  • Hindenburg Journalist Pro (also can tag and create chapters. Allan Tépper’s favorite multitrack audio editor for conventional computers)
  • TwistedWave (Mac and online only. Good program but no playback speed adjustment!)
  • Amadeus Pro
  • 3rd Party Encoder Plugins (Paul Figgiani suggested Sonnox’s Codec Toolbox ~47 USD and Pro Codec ~400 USD.)

Programs that encode MP3s using the Fraunhofer MP3 Encoder algorithm:

  • Adobe Audition
  • iTunes (Source: Cliff Ravenscraft on October 27, 2010)
  • Windows Media Player (Source: Richard Farrar)

Programs for which you can buy an optional Fraunhofer plugin for US$339.15

  • Pro Tools
  • Logic
  • Cubase
  • Nuendo
  • Sequoia
  • Wavelab

Programs that DON’T use the Fraunhofer MP3 Encoder algorithm:

  • Hindenburg
  • Reaper
  • RX 6, 7
Players

Compatibility with players and apps: .m4a files are compatible with all podcast players we could find.

Thanks for sharing so much great info, Allan!

PES 119: Bryan Entzminger21 Feb 201901:08:38

Great conversation with Bryan Entzminger, host of Engaging Missions and podcast engineer/editor.

We discuss his podcast production and quite a bit about his preferred DAW which he is quite skilled in using: Hindenburg Journalist Pro.

Here is Bryan's Live Demonstration of Hindenburg Journalist Pro, and here's a 90-day free trial of Hindenburg Journalist Pro.

Here are Bryan's production details:

  • Electro-Voice RE320
  • Rolls cough switch
  • Sound Devices MixPre-3
  • For remote internet calls, I use a second computer (an old Dell) into the line in for the MixPre-3 using a hardware mix-minus in the MixPre
  • I record 2 tracks right onto the SD card in the MixPre. I also run 2 tracks via USB into my MacBook Pro and record into Hindenburg Journalist Pro
  • Voice profiler in Hindenburg can create custom profiles!
  • For editing, I use Hindenburg Journalist Pro along with iZotope RX7 for audio restoration and Ozone 7 for mastering and a variety of Waves and other plugins depending on the need. I mix and edit in multitrack mode, export to WAV fully mastered but not normalized to -16/-19.
  • I then bring that mastered file back into Hindenburg to level using the loudness matching and either convert to MP3 using Hindenburg or RX7. If I use Hindenburg, I'll also apply the id3 tags and upload right to Libsyn from there.

Also, Bryan got back to me about the Hindenburg auto-leveling feature that we discussed in the episode: "I did several checks with the auto-level with effects and it appears my original assumption was correct. The auto-level is at the "region" (clip) level upon input - prior to ANY processing within Hindenburg."

Thanks for sharing so much great info, Bryan!

235: My Experience at Podfest 202210 Jun 202200:42:54

I've attended every single Podfest since 2014. And this year it was great to see so many friends and colleagues in person again!

Here are some of my experiences, notes and highlights of the event:

MY TALK:

"How to Use Compression & Normalization (Mandatory for Creating Professional Grade Audio)" ---> The full presentation will be published soon!

Outline what I covered:

  • Normalization  (Peak and Loudness)  (When and where to normalize audio)
  • Compression  (Why, controls)  (Demonstrations of compressors, upward compression, vocal riding, limiter, and a great sounding plugin chain)

*Audio Production Challenge for my listeners: Compress the ultra-dynamic audio clip that I used for demonstration in my presentation and send me your processed audio file!

Links to Apps and Plugins I Mentioned in My Talk at Podfest 2022 on “Compression and Normalization”

Link to 4 recent overview posts:

PODCASTING 2.0, CRYPTO, BLOCKCHAIN, ETC.:

  • Spoke with several podcast industry pro's about Podcasting 22.0, crypto integrations into podcast feeds and websites, etc. Hardly anyone was talking about this. It's still VERY early.
  • The Florida Bitcoin & Blockchain Summit

PRESENTATIONS I SAW:

Seth Silvers, CEO of Story On Media --- "The Roadmap To Using NFTs To Engage Your Podcast Audience and Increase Revenue"

  • Focus on "how can NFTs help build my community, instead of how can NFTs make me money."
  • Think of an NFT as an access card.
  • "Gratitude" NFTs just for people to support the show. (offer NFTs of every episode, etc.)
  • Never-ending tickets.
  • Uncut.fm "Collect NFTs from your favorite podcasts"

TikTok presentation by Melissa Hughes

  • *Mindset when creating TikTok posts: Document instead of create.

WHAT I WAS INSPIRED TO CHANGE/DO:

  • Create a new short course??
  • TikTok posting for marketing purposes? (Am I really going to commit to this?!?!)
  • Join a songwriting group (which I discussed w/Ashley Lehmann)

Other interesting things I learned about:

  • Snowpixel:  AI-generated images (Natalie Champa Jennings told me about this)
  • "Dream 100", gatekeepers, (from my conversation with Seth Silvers) -- The Dream 100 are relationships with people and/or companies who can help me market my business to their audiences. Instead of focusing on marketing, focus on building these 100 relationships.

MY OVERALL EVALUATION OF THE ENTIRE EVENT:

  • All in all very good
  • Perhaps too many speakers and tracks, etc.
  • Felt a bit too spread out
  • I should have bought groceries

PEOPLE I HUNG OUT WITH:

  • Seth Silvers
  • Jennie Wren
  • Steve Stewart and Mark Deal
  • Glenn the Geek
  • Mike Helms
  • Marc Johanssen
  • Roy Stegman
  • Harry Duran
  • Natalie Champa Jennings
  • Ashley Lehmann
  • Paul Desmond Adams
  • Gordon Firemark
  • Bryan Entzminger
  • Julia Levine
  • Ross Brand
  • Dave Jackson
  • Dan Hughley
  • Daniel Abendroth
  • MANY OTHERS!

NOTE: The next semester of PES starts on June 28, 2022.

PES 112: My 416 Experience so Far, and More03 Jan 201900:47:57

First, I give you my initial reactions and use cases for my new Sennheiser MKH-416 microphone. *NOTE: This is not an in-depth review or anything like that.

Also, don't miss two revealing samples of audio:

  1. Audio Technica 8035 vs SennheiserMKH-416
  2. My processed MKH-416 on my stream called Meditate With Chris

I also discuss the 416's:

  • Specifications (at the bottom of this post)
  • Quality: Lots of smooth clarity in mid and high end.
    Smooth low end.
  • My accessories: Shock mount, My laser gun holder
  • Testing close miking: Definitely getting plosives even when using the included foam windscreen. Plosives are easy to fix in post, but if you're streaming Live it would be awesome to avoid the plosives going out on the Livestream.
  • My streaming use case: Picks up my HVAC unit really well, mostly because there are no walls in between.
  • My Portico II processing: 48v Phantom Power, since mic is not close to my mouth I'm adding quite a bit of low end at 220 shelving, rolling off the low end around 80 Hz, using the Blue Silk mode, and my usual amount of to-tape compression (mild).

ANNOUNCEMENT: I started the Daily Goody!

I discuss a use case for Auphonic Multitrack - leveling all voices to the same LUFS level before mixing and editing.

I describe me EQ'ing the last quarter of a guests track because she moved away from the computer and there was suddenly background noise and she also lost some clarity.

NEWS: Podcaster's Lounge is now on hiatus.

NEWS: I just started a twice-daily meditation stream called Meditate With Chris

REVEALED: My 5 days in a cabin in the woods.

The 9 books I mentioned which are going to help me excel in 2019: (in no particular order)

Here's to the best 2019 you could possibly have!!!

Sennheiser MKH-416 Specifications:

  • Transducer: Pressure Gradient/Interference Receiver Condenser
  • Polar Pattern: Low, Mid: Hypercardioid -- Above 2 kHz: Lobar
  • Frequency Response: 40 to 20,000 Hz
  • Dynamic Range (Typical): 117 dB
  • Signal-to-Noise Ratio: 81 dB
  • Maximum Input Sound Level: 130 dB (@ 1 KHz)
  • Sensitivity: 25 mV/Pa +/- 1dB
  • Power Requirements: Phantom Power 48 V (± 12 v)
  • Output Impedance: Nominal Impedance: 25 Ohms, Minimum Terminating Impedance: 800 Ohms

Testimonials of graduates:

This course is one of very few that I’ve ever actually completed (of the many I have purchased online), and it’s hands-down been the best, and the most fun. I seriously looked forward to it every week. What makes it so different from all the other courses I’ve purchased over the years is the live, in-person element. It makes it so much more enjoyable, and I know for a fact I would never have made it through all this material if it were a self-paced, video course.
~Adam C., Class 18D Alumni

If you are serious about producing podcasts and would like to learn from a true leader in the field, Chris Curran’s Podcast Engineering School is a huge value. This is a lifetime of experience that will benchmark your knowledge among the best in podcast sound engineering. I am now highly aware of the process, production, and importance of professional sound for podcast listeners – and I know how to make it happen!
~Jim C., Class 17A Alumni

As a beginner in the world of audio, I really benefited from Chris’s Podcast Engineering School. Chris is a very good professor because he was very interactive with every single classmate and very patient with all the help he would give. After graduating I feel WAY more confident producing audio than I ever would have without this program. Overall, I highly recommend PES to anyone interested in learning the straight to the point no fluff version of professional audio engineering for podcast production.
