| ‘This Is Spinal Tap’: Rob Reiner On 41 Years Of Amplified Genius & Rock ‘N Roll Lore, and ‘Spinal Tap II’ [The Discourse Podcast] | 01 Jul 2025 | 00:20:01 | |
There are few comedies more universally beloved or endlessly quotable than "This Is Spinal Tap", the 1984 mockumentary that redefined musical satire. Directed by Rob Reiner, who also appears as fictional documentarian Marty DiBergi, the film follows a hilariously inept British metal band on a disastrous American tour. It's a film so committed to authenticity that real-life rock stars, from Ozzy Osbourne to Sting, famously thought it was real. With the 41st anniversary of "This Is Spinal Tap" around the corner, Reiner joined The Discourse to reflect on the film’s origins, legacy, and long-gestating sequel. “What we did with this film—we tried to be as honest as we could about what really happens on rock and roll tours,” Reiner says. “Every band that we’ve ever run into, every rock star, comes up and says it’s a staple on their tour bus.” That commitment to truth, even in absurdity, is what gives the film its staying power. “Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers got lost backstage. Van Halen had the crazy rider. We used it all,” Reiner adds. “That’s why I think it works.”

| ‘Friendship’: Andrew DeYoung On Tim Robinson, Paul Rudd, & The Wildest, Cringiest Buddy Comedy Of The Year [The Discourse Podcast] | 22 May 2025 | 00:21:05 | |
Director Andrew DeYoung has always had an eye for awkwardness ("Pen15," "Our Flag Means Death," and "Dave"), but with his debut feature, "Friendship," he goes from TV’s quirky corners straight to the deep end of the cringe pool. You want relatable pain, emotional chaos, and jokes so uncomfortable you laugh, wince, and maybe break out in hives? Look no further. With a cast including Tim Robinson, Paul Rudd, Kate Mara, and Jack Dylan Grazer, "Friendship" is the rare buddy comedy that leaves you feeling equal parts seen, unsettled, and surprisingly moved. DeYoung joins Mike DeAngelo on the latest episode of The Discourse. It was clear he’s still riding the high from sharing his first feature with audiences at TIFF. "[The screening] went incredibly - more than I could have ever imagined. I've been in a theater that's laughing like that, and that wasn't necessarily my goal." Deyong said. "Of course, I wanted people to find this funny and interesting and whatnot, but to hear people laugh at that level was really a surprise."

To say that this year has been rough for Marvel Studios is a bit of an understatement. The studio that was once thought to be invincible has shown that it has weaknesses and audiences are starting to take note. Look at the two most recent releases, “The Marvels” and “Loki” Season 2, for example. The former is the lowest grossing opening weekend in the history of the studio, and the latter seemingly shut the door on the main villain for the next several years, leaving the future uncertain. Thankfully, The Playlist Podcast is here to parse through those two recent releases and take into account all of 2023 to answer the question on everyone’s mind— Is Marvel Studios on the verge of irrelevance?

Given everything that’s happened/happening to Marvel this year, this all and this weekend—the flop of “The Marvels,” the Studios lowest-grossing opening ever and their first major failure in, well, forever—the book and the conversation, is timely. Robinson is a veteran journalist who has worked for Vanity Fair, many other outlets and currently works at the Ringer. For the book, her Gonzales and Edwards interviewed over 100 people and sources to tell the Marvel Studios story, from the early days of Stan Lee and producer Avi Arad, the pre-inception of Marvel Studios (when Marvel had movies and characters scattered all over at places like Universal, Paramount and of course 20th Century Fox), the big gamble of making Marvel Studios with Kevin Feige, all the risks they took and more.

| ‘Reptile’: Director Grant Singer Talks Benicio Del Toro Collaboration, The Coppola & Hitchcock Influence & Subverting Crime Tropes | 29 Sep 2023 | 00:37:32 | |
In this episode of Deep Focus, your host Rodrigo Perez sits down to chat with Grant Singer, the director of the crime thriller/drama, "Reptile." Yes, it’s a crime film, superficially—a hardened detective investigates a mysterious murder— and resembles, in some respects, the grim mood of a serial killer procedural in the vein of, say, David Fincher. But it’s also a character-driven drama and murder mystery—featuring excellent and consistently surprising supporting turns by Alicia Silverstone, Justin Timberlake, Michael Pitt, Eric Bogosian, and more— that maybe more resembles something like Denis Villeneuve’s “Prisoners,” mixed with the system-is-rigged futility of “Chinatown.” This is high praise, obviously, but it’s deserved. Singer makes his feature-length directorial debut with "Reptile" which is co-written along with Benicio del Toro, and we spoke about what del Toro brought to the project, both as an actor and writer, the process of getting him and dive deep into its many themes of shedding skin, dreams, broken dreams and more. It's an underrated movie and you should check it out asap.

Known for his second-unit action chops on blockbusters like "Transformers" and "The Meg," Madigan boldly steps up to the plate, making an assured directorial debut with a scrappy, humorous energy that pairs perfectly with Hartnett’s laid-back charisma. The film also features a stellar ensemble including Katee Sackhoff, Charithra Chandran, and Julian Kostov. Hartnett explained that Madigan’s initial pitch immediately hooked him. "One of the first things James said was, 'I want the action sequences to feel like musical numbers,'" Hartnett laughed. "He wanted character growth to happen through action. That felt essential—and honestly, pretty exciting.”

| Director John Hillcoat Talks 'George & Tammy,' "The Road,' & Doing More Cormac McCarthy | 01 Jun 2023 | 00:29:34 | |
In today’s episode of Bingeworthy, our TV and streaming podcast, guest host Joe Scott explores the lives of star-crossed lovers as well as love-crossed country music stars in the award-winning Showtime miniseries "George and Tammy." Created by Abe Sylvia ("Nurse Jackie," "The Eyes of Tammy Faye," "Hap and Leonard," and "The Affair"), all six episodes of the miniseries were directed by Australian filmmaker John Hillcoat. A veteran helmer of music videos, Hillcoat first broke out in the world of cinema with the brutally austere 2005 western "The Proposition," a movie many critics compared to the Cormac McCarthy novel "Blood Meridian." Interestingly enough, McCarthy agreed with these comparisons, going so far as to give the director permission to adapt his then-unreleased novel “The Road,” which Hillcoat translated to the big screen in 2009.
